Elegant and Horrifying

This is an audacious, gorgeously crafted and gratifying first novel, an alternate history of Christianity. It is a story of sacrifice, devotion, faith and redemption, a truly beautiful allegory that lies beneath a horrific concept: What if Mary Magdelene were a vampire? Religious passion and vampiric bloodlust clash as Mary Magdelene seeks redemption through Christ even as her nature compels her to kill in order to survive. In this story, it is Judas who is the loyal Christian, and Peter who has been possessed by evil. Together, Judas and Mary Magdelene join forces to insure Christ's resurrection after his betrayal by Peter. This very powerful and, yes, very controversial novel is one of the most stirring and original concepts I have ever encountered, written with a grace and insight rarely found in a first novel. It is one of those extraordinary stories that lingers in the mind long after the last page has been turned. It is seamless, terrifying, mystical, compelling, masterful and wondrous.

David Niall Wilson creates a new gospel (The Book of Judas), turns one of the pivotal characters in the Bible into a vampire, and puts an entirely new spin on the life of Christ, all with a stylistic flair that leads one to believe that maybe the author knows something we don't, but that we should. With vampire tales being a dime a dozen, and few of them worth the dime, THIS IS MY BLOOD stands out as one of the most thoughtful and creative takes on the legend one might hope to find. I suspect that even devout Christians will hardly find much to quibble with in regard to Wilson's interpretation of Biblical history and the existing gospels. The book explores personal faith with real thoughtfulness, wrapped in a witty and exciting package. Highest recommendation.

The Future of an Illusion

Review Date: 2000-04-24
Try reading this book. It incites the desire in me to shrink it down to something else, like any psychiatrist would approach a case of psychotic multiplicity. There are a number of individuals with credible positions presented in this book, and the summaries of those positions express matters that are highly important. The problem with the story is that, instead of hinging on the things that are important, the whole picture is in danger of becoming unhinged whenever a decision approaches the bottom line. This is like great art which has no conception that the whole world might see this picture and consider it absolutely nukers. As crazy as all the other nukers in the world might seem to us, it takes a lot of effort to keep from applying the same judgment to the system which inflicts the costs mainly on ourselves. There are things in this book, like William Greider's comment about "payoffs for layoffs" on page 200, which make it too obvious which bottom line matters. His personal suggestion to "turn out the lights rather than waste all this money waiting for world war three" (p. 201) is coupled with his knowledge of officers who "question this choice of toys over boys" (p. 202) because of what's happening: "they're being rolled by the industry." (p. 202) Even Wilson has to report that "There are too many fiefdoms." (p. 202) That might be the main conclusion here, except that it is followed by some comment about a president who would rather "chat by the side of the road until a compromise route is agreed upon." (p. 203) The index doesn't have an entry for "depleted uranium" weapons, but we are still planning for some part of the world to become a dumping ground for our bombs, and it is highly unlikely that there will be much of a chat by the side of the road before the choice of mistakes on where we can hurt our enemies the most is made. The story of how "the American military's fighting edge was being lost for lack of money" (p. 90) hardly makes sense in a world that keeps complaining when we do destroy things.

A literate, lucid masterpiece

George C. Wilson is simply the best reporter alive writing about the American military. THIS WAR REALLY MATTERS brings into the cold light of day the federal budgetary process and its effect on national defense issues. The book is relatively short--just twelve chapters--and is written in the clear, easy-to-understand style of the professional reporter Wilson certainly is. He tackles the tough questions: Why is the military orgainzed the way it is? Does it have the weapons it needs to fight now and in the future? Why and how are new weapons systems procured? As you might suspect, Wilson confirms, It's the money, Stupid! THIS WAR REALLY MATTERS is a literate, lucid masterpiece that should be read by every military officer and candidate for federal office. It should also be read and re-read by every student interested in the way decisions are made in a major democracy.

I 1st read this book a few years ago and fell in love with it. Wonderfully written but graphically portraited.

Mia Jorgenson is a talented, self-employed masseuse, working out of her coastal Oregon home. One day a paroled rapist (Donevan Raitt) is referred to her. From the beginning, the reader is aware of his intentions, so it's no major surprise when he starts stalking her and her clients and killing random women along the way in an attempt to build up his courage to combine "a little death with a big death" (rape and murder).

Though Mia's the main character in "Thrill Kill," I felt that Donevan was the more leading character here, even though he is the bad guy. I found him much more interesting than Mia, who didn't seem to have much of a life other being pretty and rubbing her troubled clients down. In fact, some of her clients seemed to have more depth to them than she did, such as Frannie Welch, the romance writer who happened to be Donevan's first rape victim back in high school.

The ending to "Thrill Kill" was ok (I really didn't have an opinion about it either way); but, overall, this is a good look into the obsessive mind of a rapist-turn-murderer. The front cover's a bit goofy with the Count Dracula-like face and ape-main arms, but it's still worth reading if you like psychological suspense/horror novels.

Consider yourself warned, though: There's quite a bit of sex and rape/violence in here. I found it a little odd that the rape scenes were much more graphic than the sex scenes, but, then again, this is horror, not romance.

I first heard of this book when I was in fourth grade and our teacher read it to us about 25 years ago. At the time, it was just called Toby. When I grew up and had children of my own, I searched high and low for a copy. I thought I would never find one, but I did...and I couldn't be happier. My oldest son has read it, and I look forward to reading it with my youngest son when he reaches that age. I think it is a book that every school library should have!

It has it all! Haunted house, peer pressure, cliffhangers!

Ever have gifted students who couldn't "fit in"? Toby was one and his frightening adventure will catch you holding your breath! Written in present tense, replete with figurative language, cliff hangers, real life problems, great characterization, you won't be able to put it down! Toby is proof that sometimes our greatest fears are of ourselves. Don't miss it!

When I began working as a trademark paralegal, I found this book invaluable. Lee Wilson does an excellent job of using examples and explaining the ins and outs of trademarks. I still use this book regularly for help with questions we have around the office. I've also passed it along to many attorneys in the office. I highly recommend this book no matter what your level of trademark knowledge is.

This book will show anyone what it means to walk personally with Jesus Christ. As you read, you will see the impact of one person's life on the lives of others as he sensitively introduces Jesus to them where they are as human beings. Jesus always met individuals where they were coming from rather than giving them canned messages and presentations. The author teaches all of us how to know Christ, walk with God, and how to be led into a vibrant life reaching others with God's love. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to both Christians and those who are seeking more info about the real Jesus Christ. As a librarian, I would also tell my patrons that this book is an easy and enjoyable read!

This book challenged me to question whether or not I have met Jesus Christ at the core of who I am. It made me consider whether I have really surrendered everything to him: my way of life, the things I do and say, and the choices I make that affect my near and distant future. Do I really know what it means to be sold out completely to pursue truth, to pursue God? Wilson Awasu's perceptive and thought-provoking book will encourage you in your personal pursuit after God, as well as give you practical insight in challenging others to do the same. I would encourage anyone who considers themself a disciple of Jesus to read this book, as well as those involved in ministry and cross-cultural missions.

What a delightful volume ! I live on Florida's Sun Coast and was so pleased to find its virtues extolled with such a succint and easily read book. I was amazed at how much local lore I had missed that was right in my own backyard.

The maps and clear directions make this an invaluable aid to anyone choosing our fair state

This is a wonderful down-to-earth guide book. In addition to the better known tourist attractions, the writers tell you about the lesser known attractions, such as museums, natural attractions, some history, the arts, etc. This book has something for everyone, from the nature lover to the theme park lover; it's for people who like to camp, and those who'd rather stay at pricey hotels. Check out the special interest tours in the back, they're great!

Tribes book for Werewolf game

Review Date: 2008-06-20
This is the latest published book for the Werewolf the Forsaken game line. It is an exhaustive look into the tribes, culture, traditions and even some signature characters of note. The Werewolf line is almost complete, so not sure how many more books are scheduled for it, but this one is a fine addition to the vast repertoire of books already available.
Its not heavy on crunchy rules, but it is definitely filled with lots of background on how the tribes operate, behave and view their world and the spirit and supernatural worlds.

Splat Book for All Five Tribes
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2008-05-24
Of all the gamelines White Wolf has released in their new 'World of Darkness' series, it seems Werewolf has consistently gotten the best, and most thorough coverage of all aspects of the game, from antagonists ('Predators' and 'The Pure') to spirit powers and Auspices ('Lore of the Forsaken') to alternate settings ('The Rage' and 'Lodges: the Splintered'). Every book released in the gameline has added more depth, and this book is no exception.

Pretty much, you get exactly what you would expect - a supplement covering each of the five Tribes of the Moon (the Ghost Wolves, or Tribeless, are understandably not covered in this book). Each chapter delves into the history and culture of one of the five Tribes, telling of legendary heroes, epic battles and dark secrets. Recruitment, initiation, naming convetions views on Renown and Auspice roles and so forth are all included as well, giving the chapters both 'in character' and 'out of character' points of view. Most importantly, we also get some information on each Tribe's ban as well. And at the end of each chapter, we are also given several NPCs to use as we see fit. The end result is that this book winds up becoming an excellent supplement for Storytellers and players alike, chock full of useful plot hooks, story ideas and regional variations to keep any Werewolf fans happy for a very long time indeed.

But aside from the fluff, what else does this book offer? 'Crunch,' and alot of it. Each chapter focuses on a particular Tribe, as I said before, so you wind up getting all manner of cool, Tribal-specific Merits (including a couple fighting styles), Rites, Fetishes, Talens and... the new 'Milestone' Gifts, epic Gifts that are only given to those who go out of their way to embody their Tribe's ideals, given by their patron Totem itself (ie, at Storyteller discretion). While cool, these powers are not overpowering either, making them quite appropriate for the levels we've seen thus far in Werewolf. Oh, and new Lodges too. Lots of them. Like the Lodge of the Shield (a fraternity of Blood Talon cops) and Lodge of the Hundred Days (Bone Shadows cleaning up after the genocide in Rwanda). Again, this presents lots more options for players and Storytellers alike.

So while there is nothing 'earth shaking' or gameline changing revealed in this book, it is still an essential supplement for any Werewolf game. Alongside 'The Rage' and the corebook, it will give players all kinds of options for customizing their characters, as well as adding depth and intensity to any existing games. I strongly recommend anyone interested in Werewolf, whether as a player or an ST, pick up this book and check out the cool new stuff your favorite Tribe(s) got. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.
