This classic new book was truly a pleasure to read. A book of historical substance, I commend Nicholas on his labor of love in this valued analysis of Jim Crow and the Woodrow Wilson Administration. A must read for all who have a genuine interest in a protest movement that challenged federal racial segregation and discrimination as it related to the forthcoming "Prophet of Peace." A great contribution to the Political Science Dept. Mr. Patler!

NB I'm looking forward to the movie!

THIS BOOK SHOULD BE A REQUIRED TEXT IN AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY CLASSES ALONG WITH ALDON MORRIS'S THE ORIGINS OF THE MODERN CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT. Nicholas Patler's well written and fascinating book truly makes a unique contribution and challenges historical opinion in so many ways--some strikingly and others so subtley that one may miss the significance if they're not careful. I was unaware that such a massive protest movement, which included thousands of African Americans and white sympathizers, had occurred forty years BEFORE THE MODERN CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT! 1913 and 1914!

Mr. Patler shows that African Americans, far from being hopelessly divided or apathetic (as some have charged) to challenge Jim Crow at what was perhaps the worst period of racism in this country, instead rose up and passionately and strategically challenged the actions of the Wilson government to segregate, downgrade, terminate, and just plain humiliate African Americans working in the federal departments. The author gives gripping accounts of the electrifying mass meetings--some as large as the ones in the modern civil rights movement, and excellent descriptions of the protest tactics. His analysis of the growth of protest orginzations in the Progressive Era, including his revision of the NAACP, challenges the view again that protest activism was weak during this period. Mr. Patler also paints wonderful portraits of the colorful protest leaders, especially the fascinating and sorely neglected William Monroe Trotter. Wake up Black History Month! Trotter is the MLK of the Progressive Era and he's rarely mentioned and never given his dues in our history. I can still picture him confronting Wilson at the White House. He, along with the other protestors and activist organizations, set the tone and groundwork for the modern civil rights movement.

Jim Crow and the Wilson Administration is by far the most thorough and detailed account of Wilsonian federal Jim Crow and the only analysis of the protest that followed. The only thing I wish Mr. Patler would have given more attention to is the racist leaders who gave federal Jim Crow its thrust. He gives excellent descriptions of a few of them, most notably Wilson, James Vardaman, and Thomas Dixon, but I would like to know more about some of the others.

Stephen was my 2nd Great-grand-uncle. His brother William, my 2nd great-grandfather also served in the Civil War despite his brother's prostestations. I William's guard detail book from 1864. This is an interesting compilation of Stephen's writings from the Civil War.

"Jottings" is a wonderful, welcome addition to Civil War studies. This collection of newspaper columns by Sergeant Major Fleharty gives a vivid account of the 102nd Regiment Illinois Infantry during the American Civil War. The introduction written by the two editors provides a splendid biographical account of Fleharty. This book is well worth purchasing for any student of our Civil War but especially for those interested in Illinois' role in the war.

Excellent Book For Parents of Pre-Teens

I purchased this book looking for ways to talk to my boys (we have 10-year-old twins) about drinking, drugs, and smoking. What I didn't know is that there is an entire section on inhalants, (sometimes known as huffing). This is something that I know nothing about because this wasn't an issue when I was growing up. Children are most vulnerable to inhalants between the ages of 9 and 12, and because regular household items are used, it is not something that they have to got out and buy, and it they are not illegal.
This book is an excellent resource for parents. Book includes pictures and is VERY informative. It also tells you what to look for if you suspect your child is using.
This book should be mandatory reading for all parents!

Best resource since Parenting for Prevention

This book is the best resource I have found linking drug and alcohol use to brain function and brain dysfunction. Best of all, it is written in a way that parents can understand how it applies to their kids and use it. The stress on clear and appropriate communication without fear tactics is itself clear and without fear tactics. The info on drugs is excellent and, most of all, the authors are knowledgeable parents themselves and understand the role of parents and the issues they and their children face around drug and alcohol use.

This book gets across that the job of "prevention" is long-term; it requires the parent to KNOW the subject. The book is 100% reality and is knowledge based rather than authority based. Myths about many drugs are laid to rest. By dealing with facts, parents and kids reduce risk. Whether a drug is legal or illegal, soft or hard, liquid or pill, it's best to know the ingredients, their effects and side-effects.

I worked with kids for 30 years and then with parents whose kids were in trouble with drugs and alcohol for another 10. This book is the best new resource combining experience and science on this most difficult topic in at least 10 years.

Drug and alcohol use are primarily health and safety issues, not criminal issues. Over 60% of kids use, over 60% are not criminals. Just say "NO" has not worked, Just Say KNOW can.

Annie Baxter sounds like the woman we all want to be...beautiful with a perfect figure while still affording to eat all fatty delights! She is funny, has plenty of energy, and manages to attract sworn-bachelor Grant. The story has an interesting twist and is packed with surprises. Between the developing romance and sizzling passion, there were several hearty laughs. Original plot and wonderful characters make this story light on the heart. Highly recommended.

Small town citizens of Lockett enjoy a good gossip, especially about the exploits of the twice-jilted Annie Baxter. Annie's one of those women everyone loves to whisper about because she's, well you know, "different." Meaning she's too honest, too spunky, too quirky to fit small minds' concept of acceptable. People call her jinxed, so despite past foibles, Annie's determined her third engagement will end at the altar with an "I do."

When Grant comes to Annie to explain that his twin won't be marrying her, she miraculously convinces him that he's got to step in for his wayward brother. Annie's tired of pity parties and whispers behind her back. Somehow, Grant finds himself walking down the aisle, to all appearances, as his brother! And when he kisses the bride, he starts wishing that this wasn't a charade. Indeed, Annie's a temptation of sex and sin, and Grant knows he's in trouble.

JUST SAY YES! presents a savvy, tumultuous, amusing contemporary romance that brings lovers together with originality and impressive flair. Remarkable plotting and sexy inuendo prove that "different" can be fantastic! Indeed, Leanna Wilson's marvelous writing will keep the pages turning quickly, providing an invigorating and imaginative read. If you only read one genre romance this year, make it JUST SAY YES! Very highly recommended!

Between the pages of this book Elisabeth Wilson bares her soul as artist and writer. Beautiful artwork combined with deeply moving prose creates a wonderful work that strikes a resonant chord in the reader. The final part of the book includes the materials and techniques that she used to create the artworks in the book. Wonderfully touching, a highly recommended read for when you want to turn your mind from the troubles of the day to a deeper, peaceful place.

Holding One's Convictions in Evangelical Love
Helpful Votes: 22 out of 23 total.
Review Date: 2001-09-04
Once again Charles Nolan Publishing has done the Christian Church a real service with this re-publication of J. C. Ryle's "Knots Untied".

Knots Untied is perhaps Ryle's most controversial writing. In it he defends his position as an evangelical Anglican (Church of England) member and minster. He sets forth his positions in contrast to the high church movement of his day, and in contrast to other church traditions such as Presbyterianism and the Baptists. (I am writing this review from my Baptist perspective.)

Throughout the book, his convictions are set forth
in a gracious and kind Christian attitude of love for those that disagree with him; an attitude that would be well for the some segments of the modern evangelical and reformed Christian church to imitate.

You may not agree with all of Ryles's views, but in the things essential he stands squarely on the Biblical evangelcial and reformed fundamentals. Just as important you will be challenged to think more carefully about those things on which you disagree with Ryle, and perhaps not be always so quick to expound your differences so dogmatically without the loving qualification Ryle uses in expounding his own distinctive views.

Yes, there are issues in Knots Untied where I disagree with
Bishop Ryle, but in reading Knots Untied, my respect for the evangelical Bishop remains undiminshed. On the contrary that respect has increased. I can not help but love him all the more as I see in his attitude toward those who disagree with him, a gracious spirit and heart that imitates the Lord Jesus Christ.

The Perfect Book for the Serious Anglican

"Knots Untied" is the perfect book for the serious Anglican Christian. Written by the first Bishop of Liverpool, J.C. Ryle, this work is a veritable treasure for the Anglican who is looking for theological red meat.

Ryle lived in time much like our own. A time when "new teachings" were disrupting the Church of England...just as "new teachings" by various Anglican leaders are disrupting Anglicanism in the western world today.

Unlike many modern Anglicans, Ryle had no trouble identifying himself as a Protestant...in the grand tradition of the great English Reformers and as the Thirty-nine Articles of Religion enumerated. In this work, with outstanding clarity of thought and with razor-like precision, he answers all the hot questions of his day...and most of those today.

This book is not just for clergy. One of the aspects of Ryle's genius was his ability to write definitively enough for scholars and yet, to do so in a fashion not offputting to the people in the pews. Every chapter is memorable and if you're not careful you'll have more highlighted than not.

Christians of other persuasions will also benefit from this work. Informed Presbyterians and Baptists know that for most of the period since the Reformation, they have differed very little theologically speaking from Anglicans, save the form of church government (Presbyterians) and in the matter of baptism (Baptists).

Book lovers will appreciate the great care the publisher has taken to produce a first rate presentation and library grade binding. This volume is the second in the series of Ryle reprints. My advice is to buy one copy to use...and another to have for safekeeping.

Too bad there are no do-overs....

I was supposed to be in the original OB cast of The Rimers of Eldritch back in 1964. Unfortunately I couldn't "get" the play and Lance Wilson fired me about two weeks before the opening at Cafe La Mama. He was right--I stank. Later I came to the play as a reader and simply wish there were do-overs. It's a wonder of dramaturgy and character, as complex as a piece of chamber music and every bit as fulfilling. Lanford, you done good.

Wilson's early plays are among American theatre's best.

I teach playwriting. Not long ago, I had a roomful of students watching the splendid video version of his LEMON SKY. They were wiped out. I was stunned that they hadn't encountered the play before. For more than thirty years, Lanford Wilson has been quietly building a catalogue of writing that has few equals in the American theatre. From early work such as LEMON SKY, BALM IN GILEAD, HOT L BALTIMORE and FIFTH OF JULY to the recent SYMPATHETIC MAGIC, he has maintained an extraordinary record of charting the subtext of America. I can't think of another American writer who has reflected more of this country's voices and concerns. This book is a swell introduction to him.

Largemouth Bass Fly-Fishing: Beyond the Basics is an exhaustive guide covers everything a fly fisher needs to know about largemouth bass, including habitat, approach, delivery, fly animation, fishing the shallows, the vertical drop, fishing the mid-depths, going deep, time/weather/locational patterns, seasonal/night information, fly patterns, and more. Largemouth Bass Fly-Fishing is a superior reference to a virtual battle sport, for the fish in question is potentially strong enough to suddenly jerk the rod from the angler's hands. Recommended for fishing enthusiasts.

I've got more experience casting flies to trout in the Rockies, and having moved to Texas, decided to read up on flyfishing for bass. I have read several of the books that are available, and I think this is probably the best one, at least if largemouths in still water are your most likely quarry.
