Captivating Summer Reading

This novel takes a "hot button" political issue and personalizes it. This is not propaganda, but a story that presents information about both sides of stem cell research. The authors have created believable and likable characters, faced with heartbreaking decisions. It is impossible to read about a young man's life torn apart and not feel personally affected. I believe the author's experience as a medical doctor made him particularly effective when writing about the painful decisions families must make when a loved one is permanently disabled. The omniscient point of view works well in this novel, allowing the reader to see how each person's experience and opinions are different regarding stem cell research. This novel is also a story about love, and the hardship of caring for family and friends stricken with illness and injury. This book entertains and informs. I truely didn't want it to end, but I guess the end of this issue is not yet written.

Ultimately, it's about HOPE

At the center of this story is a U.S. Senator, who is very outspoken in his opposition to stem cell research, who must decide what he really stands for after his son is injured in a automobile accident. All of a sudden the very research that he has so strongly opposed can make a difference in the life of his son. Can he find an answer he can live with and can his marriage survive?
Even more, the authors have taken us into the issues surrounding stem cell research and into the lives of people who live daily with diseases and injuries who could possibly benefit from the technology of stem cells.

I found this an interesting, easy to read book, that is very hard to put down. Yes, it was written by a physician and there are medical situations, but it is written so everyone can understand that for people everywhere who suffer from catastrophic illness & injury and their caregivers, at times, HOPE is all they have.

This book is a moving, throught provoking novel which makes the reader consider their opinion of stem cell research. I highly recommend this book, hopefully it will make you think. In the end, this novel is about hope, hope to those who suffer and hope to those forced to watch the suffering.

This is a charming pop-up based on a familiar rhyme. Kids love building, and it's also fun to let them know how houses get there!

Clark Wilson, Ph.D. is credited with the first 360 feedback surveys for training and development in the early 1970s. "How and Why Effective Managers Balance Their Skills" brings together his key conclusions after 30 years in the field. (Dr. Wilson was 89 when the book was published.) Written in a direct, easy-to-understand manner, and featuring extensive graphs, charts and illustrations, Wilson reminds us of a timeless principle that his years of research underscored in no uncertain way:

Maximum managerial effectiveness is achieved through balanced managerial skills.

"After 30 years of analysis," he writes, "the problem of most managers is very clear. Too many managers try to exercise control without providing the Technical and Teambuilding skills needed to achieve the goals." (italics in original)

My interpretation is that many managers assume control before they've earned the right, in the eyes of their teams, to exert control. They would earn that right if their technical skills and team-building skills were equal to their desire/need to drive towards results.

Wilson was a close associate of ours. His research standards were impeccable. This book is highly recommended.

How Many Angels Does It Take: The Remarkable Life of Heather Rose Brooks

Fall in Love with Heather!

A remarkable book about a remarkable young lady, her mother, and the group of people who have rallied around her and, in turn, drawn from her incredible spirit and zest for life. On one level, the book tells the story of how wheelchair-bound Heather Rose Brooks learned to drive a horse-drawn carriage with her feet. But the story continues on many levels.

As a lawyer, I've worked with clients who deal with physical challenges. Betty Beamguard has captured not just Heather's story, but, through her, the story of countless others with "disabilities" who take more risks and have more fun in life than many "able-bodied" people do.

This is a story of laughter and triumph, of the power of goals, and the infectious spread of a willing spirit. Middle grades and YA readers might especially enjoy seeing life through the eyes of someone whose life may not mirror theirs -- but, then, what little girl hasn't dreamed of her own horse?

This book is thoroughly engaging with a simplistic connectiveness to a young lady, Heather, that I now feel as though I know personally!
What I liked most about the book was the message of life---a life that authors servanthood in others and continues to generate hope for all those "prisoners of hope" who are successfully scaling the walls of impossibilities. As an administrator, I have placed the book in our school library for our students to read. As one teacher said, "It was awesome!" Thanks, Heather, for spreading hope to others for an abundant life.

Strong insights on bitterness
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2004-04-05
This book is a set of several fairly short essays directly or closely related to the theme of bitterness. The first essay is the centerpiece, and worth far more than the price of this book. The author goes in to a careful analysis of what bitterness is, how to detect it, how it affects us, how the non-Christian world deals with it (ineffectively), and how Christians are to respond. Other essays deal with related topics, especially bitterness toward parents.

I must give this book five stars as it is clearly written (if slightly repetetive in places to make a point), contains many insights to the nature of bitterness, gives clear and practical guidance for dealing with it, and is based on Scripture.

The direct, pratical application provided in this book is what struck me most. I highly recommend it for personal study, even if you think you're not bitter!

This book will change your life, get it right now!

I found this book when I was searching for a Latin Primer for my eight year old daughter last year. I got it because the title was interesting. I have given this book to family, friends and members of my church. Everyone I know needs to read this book at lease once in their life.

Even if you feel that this does not apply to you what do you have to lose if you read it. You may also know someone else who would be healed by the information in this small book.

I once heard someone say that unforgiveness is like taking rat poison and hoping the rat will die. This book will help you escape from that trap and make forgiveness a lifelong habit.

It's has been very difficult trying to find books for my twin 8yr old daughters.

I wanted a series of books with the star character being an African American girl just having fun and doing kid stuff. A book that will make them know that reading is fun. This book does just that and more.

I only wish that there were more of them because I already bought them all.

If you're looking for a great chapter book for an African American girl, then author Valerie Wilson Wesley's series of "Willimena Rules" is it.

Also try, Gloria Rising and Gloria's Way by Ann Cameron.

WILLIMENA'S RULES! HOW TO FISH FOR TROUBLE by Valerie Wilson Wesley is rule book #2 in a series of books about Willimena Thomas. It's spring break and Willimena is excited to have a whole week out of school and overjoyed that her favorite cousin, Teddy, is coming to spend spring break at her house. Her dad has all kinds of activities planned for Willimena, her big sister, Tina and cousin Teddy. Willimena can hardly wait for Teddy's arrival but when Teddy does finally arrive he goes from being F.C. (favorite cousin) to T.T.T (Teddy the Terrible). Teddy is getting all the attention from everyone including Tina, her father and all her friends. What was once going to be a fun week for Willimena ends up being a horrible one as she feels left out of everything and replaced by her cousin Teddy. When Willimena starts fishing for trouble it isn't hard to see who her bait will be, cousin Teddy.

Valerie Wilson Wesley's WILLIMENA'S RULES! HOW TO FISH FOR TROUBLE takes us on an adventurous journey of what happens when a child feels left out. All children at one time or another have felt left out and it is exciting to see how Willimena handles the situation. I recommend this book to those of you with children ages 9-12. My 9 year old read it as soon as I finished and she loved it too.

I, CROWLEY Almost the Last Confession of the Beast by Snoo Wilson {Mandrake of Oxford, P.O Box 250 , Oxford OX1 1AP £9.99 252pp} Whatever you think of Aleister Crowley - and let's face it, he was a right-wing, misogynistic druggie with some unpleasant personal habits{Pardon? Ed} - his contribution to the magical, pagan and occult revival of the last century was considerable. At a time when psychopaths like Hitler and Stalin were murdering millions in their death camps he hardly deserves the silly title of "Wickedest Man in the World". This is a spoof autobiography of the Great Beast allegedly written when he was in Hastings at the end of his life. It covers the period when he lived in New York and then founded his abbey in Sicily. It is darkly amusing, entertaining and recommended.

Wilson proves himself an expert on Crowley's life, magickal theory and philosophy. I laughed (and cried) over this book. It was a pleasure to read from start to finish.

A 'must read' for occultists everywhere. Buy it. You won't be disappointed.

I usually don't go for SciFi's but this book was recommended by a friend and I'm glad I read it. I couldn't put it down. I was spellbound, its fast pace, riveting plot, kept me absorbed throughout. You want a book to read on the plane, train, or just tucked up in bed, this one's IT...Immortalis, it's only fault was that it had to end, or did it?

i saw this show in san francisco, and, as an artist, i was moved to silent reverie. the works are astonishing! whoever asssembled them deserves the thanks of anyone who has known the cold, stark beauty of winter and kept its memory in their souls. the artists who captured these moments in time are unmatched in contemporary painting. simply, i thank god for their lives and work. as one who still believes in the power of beauty upon the human spirit, i walked away from this show elevated and in awe. most particularly, i was enveloped by the works of gustave caillebotte --- so little known in america; so wondrous in the realization of his vision and his time. this show is serene. and this book comes close to reflecting its essence.

Fantastique!

Add this gem to your art book collection. As a screen printer, I have been increasingly seduced by the "winter palette". This wonderful volume compiles the best of the Impressionists as they, too, came to appreciate and explore the unique light, the effects of the weather, the shapes of hibernating nature, the muted hues, and the brooding melancholy of Effets de Neige.
