I absolutely LOVED this!!! It's a really dark story, with betrayal and conflict and heartbreak. Julien was blinded in an accident and thought his wife Kerri was dead. But was she? Caroline comes to the island where he lives and it's as though his wife is still alive...yet she has no memory of her life with him. It's incredibly moving and very, very emotional. I absolutely, positively recommend this!

Julien and Kerri had a rough marriage. He was a wealthy young businessman, the epitome of success. She was a decade his junior, unwanted by her family, insecure about herself. The story opens up on them arguing in a parking lot after a party. The brakes on Julien's car give way on the mountain road and their is a crash. Julien is blinded and severely injured. Kerri loses all memory of him, their marriage and her unborn child. Fast forward eleven years. Kerri, now Caroline, applies for the job of social secretary to a wealthy young woman, who is no other than Julien's sister. She goes to her new employer's island home where the woman lives with Julien and their half brother. Her memories of Julien return bit by bit, as she realizes that her and her husband's lives are in danger from an unexpected source...It's a fantastic read, full of suspense and pathos. I guarantee you'll love it!

You'll really enjoy this book. It's a short read, but really fun. The author is commended for his satirical presentation of what we all encounter every day and how to survive it and even prosper. It will keep a smile on your face as you read it! Buy it, read it, enjoy it. Your life will never be the same.

A Satiric Romp Through The Corporate Landscape

A delightful, satirical piece which is filled with humor, wit and blatant sarcasm.
Wilson's humor is shown not only in the book itself but through funny footnotes and "dead on" cartoon illustrations that even the most jaded corporate wonk well love.
Through the humor there are very striking messages to those seeking their way through the corporate maze. There is even a little test in the back to see if you "have what it takes" to be a CEO (or Big Head in Wilson's terms).
A great gift for those seeking humor from the bureaucratic environment.

The essential text for Westerners interested in the Pransangika view of emptiness. Covers profound topics while maintaining clarity of prose.Best for those with some familiarity with Buddhist philosophy, but educational for beginners as well.

Helpful for understanding emptiness meditation

Although, I had only a beginners understanding of Tibetan Buddhism before I read this book, I felt myself easily acquainted with the analytical methods discussed in "Emptiness Yoga." Hopkins is able to elucidate complex philosophical and experiential topics concerning the meditative practices of Tibetan Buddhism so that anyone with a good philosophical background or an acquaintance with meditation will be able to gain a more profound understanding of emptiness. My only criticism is that I often felt myself being tantalized by what appeared, at least on closer inspection, to be over-simplistic analytical tools. Though, this is perhaps more a problem with the subject matter than the writer. I had always envisioned Tibetan Buddhism to be more experiential and subtle in its understanding of cause and effect and emptiness. Yet, perhaps further complexity is not within the scope of this book. Nevertheless, I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in Buddhism or in attaining a more profound understanding of emptiness.

This is a great book. I enjoy hours of reading it. All of my childhood memories of growing up in Little Rock come back.

Being forced out of Arkansas to California to complete my education after Governor Faubus closed the schools, didn't dampen my view of the South.

I plan to buy all of the new subjects that have just been published by these publishers.

A must for ever southerner

A well documented history of today's Black family. Read this book to understand how our family structure has manage to weaken over the last 150 years. This book left me with the understanding that our individaul accomplishments consisting of corporate promotions, new home purchases, and higher incomes don't mean much when our family structure continues to weaken our community towards non-existence.

Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful book!

I don't know Donna Franklin and don't have anything to gain through my comments. This book is one of the best I've read in a LONG time in analyzing the reasons for some of the changes in the black family and suggesting a number of very lucid, rational, and intelligent recommendations. Absolutely terrific, terrific book! Very scholarly, well-researched, and thoughtful but written in non-jargon and extremely accessible to the average reader. Should be required reading in most college courses as well as for our politicians.

Have you ever felt you had nowhere to turn? Like if much more were put on your shoulders, you'd break? Like if you were given just one chance, you could turn your life around? You're definitely not alone in that feeling.

The Envelope, by Wilson Crawford, outlines four individual's lives that were less than perfect. Each endured different struggles which were equally demanding on the lives around them. This was, of course, until the mysterious envelope appeared.

Though each character never outwardly attributed the changes in their lives to the envelope, it seems to have been the catapult for many successes. The originator of the envelope clearly followed a rocky path finding fortunate circumstances and wanted this good fortune spread to many others.

The subtle religious undertones described with each twist of the plot were both welcomed and comforting to this book reviewer. Each individual either attended church, worked the ministry or would attend church. This proved to be very uplifting during more than one part of the book.

Crawford's ability to melt one character's life into the next is breathtaking. Descriptions are vibrant, but by no means overdone. Readers have the ability to explore a wide range of imaginative senses and emotions. I wish it hadn't ended as quickly as it did - I was very interested to see ow the envelope touched the next set of lives in came into contact with.

Michael Oren Fitzgerald edits THE ESSENTIAL CHARLES EASTMAN, which revises and updates a classic edition containing the writings of the first American Indian medical doctor and co-founder of the Boy Scouts of America. He was the only American Indian author raised to young adulthood in the nomadic lifestyle of the pre-reservation area: this survey includes a biography, complete bibliography of his works, new sepia photos from his life, and more: an essential addition to any Native American or spirituality holding.

Amazing work from Charles Eastman

The author has changed my ideas of who the American Indians are. I was swept away by the descriptions and mesmerized by the spiritual life of a people who were closer to God than I ever imagined. This book should be read at schools and universities. Their history is vital to understand who all of us are.

J. B. Jackson's legacy lives on in geographers, historic preservationists and others, and is alive and well. This book is a great introduction to Jackson's lifelong study of the American landscape, including the modern, vernacular everyday things that many scholars ignore or criticize.

A variety of authors tell Jackson's story, and about how his influence has impacted their lives and careers. A must-read for cultural landscape students, historic preservationists, architectural historians, or anyone who appreciates a good road trip on the roads of the U.S... the ones travelled before the construction of the interstate highway system...

A collection of reflections on how to see, interpret, and appreciate the American cultural landscape. After reading this book the term "the middle of nowhere" will never leave your mouth or enter your thoughts. The front porch of the local house will be as interesting as Time's Square. Read this book and understand your ordinary environment. Not just for cultural geographers, but everyone with eyes or a heart for how we live and organize our spaces and places.

Mature Worship

Review Date: 2007-07-26
Christians need to be reminded to lose the gym shorts and flip-flops on Sunday and dress to meet the Lord God Almighty. And sit still and listen.

Douglas Wilson exhorts us to worship God rightly with practical examples; simple ways but accomplished through doing battle with our sinful selves. How we sing, pray, listen and feast matter- a lot. Wilson exhorts by taking a log of an issue and whittling it down to one sharp, practical spear that goes right to the heart of the matter and leaves us better prepared for worship.

This is a great book to read during the week and it is a great book to hear from the pulpit on Sunday morning.

Facilitation from a manager's point of view

Priscilla Wilson has provided an overview of the work of the Institute of Cultural Affairs / Ecumenical Institute in the area of facilitation, leadership and change particularily in the period from 1968 to 1974.

This particular publication touches on many of the multiple dimensions of organizational change, leadership, facilitation and learning. She presents the sometimes very complext ideas in ways that are readily accessable to the management community.

A number of authors have assisted in making available to the general public the thinking, ideas, models and methods of the ICA/EI over the years among them are:
Bergdall, T. D., (1994). Methods for Active Participation: Experiences in Rural Development from East and Central Africa, Nairobi: University of Oxford Press.
Epps, J.L.(2005). Bending History: Talks of Joseph Wesley Mathews, Lutz, FL: Resurgence Publishing Corp.
Jenkins, J. C. (1996): The International Facilitator's Companion, digiTAAL, Groningen, The Netherlands.
Spencer, L. (1989) Winning Through Participation, Kendall/Hunt Publishing, Dubuque, Iowa.
Stanfield, B. (2002), for The Canadian Institute of Cultural Affairs, The Workshop Book: From Individual Creativity to Group Action, New Society Publishers, British Columbia.
Stanfield, B. (2000). The Courage to Lead (ICA Series). New Society Publishers, British Columbia.

Several of these authors have multiple publications. These efforts represent a small faction of the potential publications from the work of the ICA / EI.

Reader-Friendly Method of Facilitating Group Efforts
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2003-12-09
You'd think that if you are in a group of people--co-workers, committee members, civic task force, church group, band of volunteers--whose task it is to assess a problem, understand the issues involved and come up with a workable and effective solution, that this outcome would be easy accomplished. We're all like-minded people motivated to reach an agreeable solution, right? Yeah, right. We've all been in similar situations where various factors have militated against easy solutions--personal agendas, lack of involvement on the part of group members, hidden animosities, undeveloped verbal or analytical skills on the parts of the problem-solvers, lack of direction and so on. And we know how frustrating this situation can be. As a psychiatrist who has led many groups over the years, I know this all too well.

Priscilla Wilson and her co-authors have written a clearly worded and easily understood (if somewhat didactic, at times) guide for people who find themselves in this situation, and it is particularly aimed at those leaders in the group who are 'supposed to make it happen.' Wilson, who has had 30 years in 'facilitative leadership' positions, has brought her clear thinking and experience of what works to bear on the presentation of her methods. A combination of theoretical understanding of the issues involved and 'how-to' suggestions and real-life anecdotes makes the book useful for understanding the interpersonal/group issues, for encouraging the interactive process and for getting results.

Using the insights of pathbreaking management consultant W. Edwards Deming as a springboard for her own approach, Wilson lays out methods to encourage individual and group engagement, mobilize energy, encourage interactions which lead to effective reflection on the issues that then generate actions to solve the problems at hand. She also suggests how to learn the skills involved and transfer them to similar problems in the future. All of this is done primarily via 'the facilitative way' used by the group leader. That phrase, redolent of Eastern thinking, does indeed suggest a gentle, reflective, encouraging and forward-moving kind of listening and intervention on the part of the facilitator/leader that is too often absent in blunter Western leadership styles.

Throughout the book are reinforcements to the notion that leaders don't, can't, and don't need to have all the answers to all the questions, but that those answers can reside in other group members and can generally be brought out with encouragement and skillful facilitation.

Recommended.
