I started reading this book and couldn't stop reading.
When you finish reading it you miss the main characters. You would like to meet Mr. Hopkins in person, but unfortunately that is impossible.

The facts, ideas and the history in the book demonstrates that America had the most important political leader of the XXth century as president during second world war.

My personal opinion is that Mr. Roosevelt is the man that was responsible for truly changing the direction that history was about to take.

I read a translated version of the book.

I bought this book, on some fair measure, due to the review written by Mr. Passos on Amazon's web site.I had heard the name Harry Hopkins for many years, and had the somewhat vague knowedge that Harry Hopkins was an intimate advisor and assistant to Franklin Roosevelt. I was curious when I saw the book at Amazon, and I bought it.
This is an outstanding book, and it easy for me to see why it is a Pulitzer Prize winner. The book is as much about the Roosevelt administration and related national and international history as it is about Messrs. Roosevelt & Hopkins. One of the interesting things about this book is that it was written in 1947;I reminded myself of that throughout my reading. For the most part it is written in the first person by Robert Sherwood, a gifted author who worked with Hopkins while in the Roosevelt administration. I gave a lot of credibility to the book because of the author's proximity to Hopkins and Rooseveltas well as the short time span between the actual events and the publishing of the book.
The book is well written by a man that had substantial prior experience in writing show business type material. In a number of instances the author puts himself on the scene of events, but by no means limits the book to his experiences with Roosevelt & Hopkins. There is considerable detail...sometimes when I read a review that makes that claim I suspect that I will encounter much minutiae with boredom to follow. Not the case here; there are many interesting explanitions, facts, discussions, etc. I found myself continuously engaged as some of the most compelling history of the U.S. unfolded at the hands of the author.

Sherwood, Roosevelt and Hopkins - Fifty Years Later

I first read this book when I was in high school in 1952. For several years I had been captivated by politics and political biography, reading everything I could get my hands on. Sherwood's ROOSEVELT AND HOPKINS was the best. In the more than half century since, my passion for political writing and biography has continued unabated, and on many occasions I have recommended this book to others. Since 1991 I have traveled to Russia dozens of times and frequently recommend this book to English speaking Russian academics and politicians there. Every person to whom I have recommended it, here or in Russia, has seen fit to tell me how much they appreciated the book and the recommendation. Recently I began to wonder though. Was the book really as good as I recalled it from my first and only reading over 58 years ago? So I re-read it. It stood the test of time and of memory. It was even better than I recalled. It is an old and good friend, as alive, vibrant, and informative today as if all that the monumental and world-changing people and events described in it had happened yesterday.

A Complete Guide to Modern Irish Music

My only problem with this book is that it wasn't written four years ago when I first became seriously interested in Irish music (I eventually started the Arizona Irish Music Society...). I could not find a quick cure to my ignorance and reading Irish Music Magazine was frustratingly unsystematic.

Most books on Irish music are focused on the early history of the music, but there was little about the last 50 years. For me The Rough Guide to Irish Music is absolute God send. It is incredibly thorough and yet quite readable.

The first part of the book gives an excellant background on the history of Irish music and its evolution over the last fifty years. The next sections give profiles of key artists and bands with recommendations about their best CD's. Beware, reading this section can be very expensive!

I cannot pretend familiarity with all the performers and bands covered, but I was favorably impressed with their coverage of the performers I do know.

The Rough Guide Guide to Irish Music is an incredible achievment.

THE source on Irish music!

It is, of course, impossible to know all that is knowable about Irish music, much less present it in a single book. Geoff Wallis and Sue Wilson come amazingly close to accomplishing that daunting task, however, with The Rough Guide to Irish Music.

The volume is deceptively small, though thick, and it's packed with information. It begins with an explanation of the roots of Irish music, its relation to "Celtic" music -- the terms are synonymous in some circles, antithetical in others -- and the people responsible for keeping the music alive and/or bringing it back into the public's fickle consciousness. Next, an excellent chapter spells out the differences among the many Irish vocal and instrumental styles. Do you know whan "sean nos" really means? Can you identify a reel, jig, slip jig or hornpipe by its time signature? This section will help.

The bulk of the book is devoted to a "who's who" of Irish music, and you'd be hard-pressed to find a reference more complete. After dividing the musicians into loose categories -- singers, groups, families, fiddlers, harpers, etc. -- the book provides concise but thorough biographies detailing their influences and impact on the music scene. Each entry also notes the most influential albums from each band/musician, making it easy for readers to know where to expand their collections.

The book ends with a listing for sessions around Ireland, plus music festivals, schools, media, recommended reading and other resources.

If you have any interest in expanding your knowledge of Irish music and Irish musicians, this is the place to do it. The Rough Guide to Irish Music is a phenomenal package that's useful and well-written to boot. It's compact size makes it easy to stow in a music case or jacket pocket, and I predict you'll find yourself pulling it to browse a lot more often than you'd expect for a reference book.

The format and content of this compact guide to Irish music makes the reader eager to listen and learn. The guide has three main sections: background, musicians, and listings. Within each section, the layout allows the reader to peruse for specific information, such as recording history, accompanying artists, and recommended CD top choices as well as recording labels. The background section provides an overview of style and form; while the listing section includes resources not readily available to Americans in such a concise format. I recommend the book for the balanced and well researched information, adroitly presented, that can help with purchases for one's own or a Celtic friend's collection.

BOOK IS ALL I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE! WELL-WRITTEN, COMPLETE HISTORY OF THE MAN AND HIS COMPANY, HIS DREAMS AND IDEAS AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS. IT'S INTRIGUING TO READ THE BACKGROUND OF A PERSON WHO HAS CREATED SO MUCH AND BEEN A PIONEER IN THE AMERICAN FIREARMS INDUSTRY AND, JUST AS INTERESTING, TO UNDERSTAND THE MINDSET AND DETERMINATION AND SACRIFICE IT TOOK TO REACH HIS PLACE IN HISTORY. AND, THE DESCRIPTIONS OF THE TECHNOLOGY AND ART OF STURM RUGER FIREARMS IS FASCINATING. REALLY GLAD I BOUGHT THE BOOK.

In 1949, just after World War II, all of the gun manufacturing companies faced a problem of selling guns in the commercial market. The Government had extensive stocks of guns like Endfields, Springfields, Colt .45's and of course any number of foreign guns and were beginning to sell these guns on the commercial market. It was obviously a stupid time to go into the gun manufacturing business.

In 1949 Bill Ruger entered the gun business with one gun being manufactured by a very small company. The gun was the Ruger.22 Standard Pistol which was an instant hit and is still in production as the Mark III. Every few years since then there has been a new gun from the folk at Ruger, each of which has pioneered new design principles that has made nearly all of the guns a success.

In this book, R.L. Wilson has produced a masterpiece of a book that describes all of the guns produced by the company as well as a history of the company and the man. It's an excellent addition to any gun lovers library.

Gosh, this was a pleasant book to read. The only negative I recall was the lack of detailed information about all of the photographs scattered throughout the book. I admit I was hoping to read a little more about some of the business failures and reasons why some firearms did not go into production. However, we don't need to focus in on the negative when it comes to Mr. Ruger's wonderful life! Other than my desire to want a little more description about the photographs and business dealings, this was an absolutely wonderful book on Mr. Ruger.

Sara's Song provides a real life account of what it was like to be a slave in the last few years before the Civil War. Seen through the eyes of a 12 year old girl, this story adds personal insight to a sad time in history, making it much more real than most textbook accounts. Having taught Civil War history, I feel that young readers will find this story interesting, informative, and exciting. There is mystery, danger, and intrique that will have their hearts racing and the pages turning. This book would make an excellent gift for middle school age children.

As a master storyteller, Wilson weaves history and personal experiences into an enticing read. The characters in Sara's Song are well developed, and when added to a fast paced plot, keeps the reader spellbound. Even though this book would easily benefit a student's study of the civil or post civil war era it is a delightful read for all.

Shroud Magazine keeps on getting better with every issue. Issue 3 is the best yet. With more pages of strong tales, interviews, dark art, and flash fiction, Shroud Magazine is by far the new king of dark fiction.

With authors such as D. Harlan Wilson, Joseph D'Lacey, JG Faherty, Shaun Jeffrey, Joseph McGee, Jeffrey Jewett, and Sheldon S. Higdon, Shroud Magazine has upped the pressure on other horror mags to keep up with its pool of talented writers. This is a must. In time these writers will be the new crop of terror. And with best-selling writers such as Brian Keene, Tom Piccirilli, Jack Ketchum, and many, many others these guys will be in good company!

Keeps getting better!

As I listened for over 1 hour on the G. Gordon Liddy show and read reviewed in the NY Post, this is THE book on the history of arms and women. The photos are astounding (some by Peter Beard), the captions very interesting (not repeats of the text!) and, over all, one can really understand women's fascination in the use of firearms, from defence, to shooting, especially sport shooting and an Olympic Champion (as well as a good piece on Annie Oakley).
A great gift book.

Great book 4 learning problem-solving skills in Peds

Review Date: 2003-07-31
I wish I saw this pocketbook when I was a med student. Most medical textbooks use the memory-based approach to present any disease i.e. prevalence, pathophysiology, signs and symptoms, complications, management. This pocketbook contains a variety of cases which teach the approach physicians employ every day to evaluate symptoms, physical findings, and necessary tests to allow recognition of patterns of signs and symptoms for a certain disease. Let's face it. No one can memorize everything! The problem solving skills and pattern recognition allow us to arrive at a definitive diagnosis.

Features of this pocketbook:

- It teaches med students how to "think" when they encounter common pediatric problems i.e. it teaches problem-solving skills.

- The book contains 55 chapters (cases) e.g. rash (there're many case scenarios about rash in different age groups), congenital malformations, fall, cyanosis, abdominal mass, cough, sore throat, murmurs ...etc.

- Each chapter starts with a chief complaint of a patient in a scenario, and then asks questions to help guide the diagnostic process. A brief discussion follows about the history and physical exam which help rule out other possible diseases. Treatment is presented at the end with the follow-up.

- Sidebars provide the "pearls" from each case and reminders of important facts.

- No pictures, no diagrams, no tables.

- Sometimes the discussion of the differential diagnoses is insufficient and you feel you need to learn more.

- There are many other diseases which were not addressed, but I guess if they write about them then it won't be called "pocketbook" anymore.

- This book comes in 282 pages; published by Fence Creek Pub; 1st edition (1999).

A great way to start your pediatrics rotation

Review Date: 2000-06-17
(This is a review from a third-year medical student who just finished his pediatrics rotation.)

The case presentations in this book are fast, easy to read, and concise. Each case is accompanied by a thorough discussion of the common physical exam and laboratory findings, disease process, and natural history, and the basics of treatment and follow-up are provided. The differential diagnoses given are broad enough to make you aware of less-common conditions and will guide you when you decide to look to other more in-depth sources (eg, current literature, or the hefty, all-inclusive "Bibles" of pediatrics).

Its philosophy of focusing on presenting symptoms is very logical when considering the patient population. Children are often unable to specifically tell you what's going on, where they're hurting, when they started getting sick, etc, and often a vague history and a few physical exam findings are all you get. Thus, the chapter titles "Fever and rash," "Cyanosis in a newborn," "Failure to thrive," "Runny nose," are consistent with the process you'll go through when admitting a child.

All the essentials are well-covered, especially the most common pulmonary problems (aspiration, asthma, pneumonia), and infectious disease issues (pharyngitis, gastroenteritis, sepsis, antibiotic choice). Points that are not so thoroughly discussed include:

- Many aspects of inpatient care (assesment of dehydration, fluid resucitation, management of pain and fever) - Genetics - Biochemistry, inborn errors of metabolism - Toxic ingestions - Orthopedics/sports medicine (common musculoskeletal injuries) - Hematology/oncology (anemias, leukemia/lymphoma) - Cardiology (cyanotic heart defects, murmurs) - Psychosocial, developmental, and neurologic problems (abuse, short stature, encopresis/enuresis, cerebral palsy, hydrocephalus)

A medical student using this book would do well to review these topics more in-depth later in the course of the rotation. That being said this is an enjoyable and ideal book to read early in the rotation as an introduction to pediatrics!

Holding a very special place among Whitman's writing, & very unlike anything by Thoreau, Specimen Days is as close as we get to Walt with his masks removed. There is something of a suburbanite in Whitman's appreciation of nature; essentially, he simply went, looked around & wrote down what he saw & what he did. Force of nature that he was, what he mostly saw was, of course, himself. Nature is benign.

The Civil War entries are famous. The real war, which Whitman said would never get in the books, makes an appearance in the sad hospitals he visited.

Specimen Days is an inspiring message to us. Whitman knew we would be here.

it is a reprint of the first edition 1883 version. The book itself is one of the best American prose works ever, especially the first 80 pages, Whitman's transcribed bloody napkin notes as a nurse in the Civil War and lounging around D.C. It then turns into what he was going to call "notes of a half paralytic," and it is a strange way to read Whitman, less body, less movement, detailing nature like a thoreau journal, but unlike hdt, he travels west, and his lecture in Kansas, where he talks about the language of england not being able to describe this landscape and the form of poetry not working for it are among his most thoughtful and interesting ideas. I like the cover and the basic physical sense of this book, too, though it is just a cheap dover.
