One look at researcher Paul Thompson's book and it's easy to see why bottlenose dolphins continue to be the world's favorite aquarium animal. Thompson's incredible knowledge coupled with lively photographs of bottlenose dolphins effortlessly flying from the ocean in unison and weaving in the depths of the azure sea make for a treasured book. He explores the world of these fascinating creatures from physical to sociological structures. Thompson writes of the dolphin family structure; feeding habits; and relationships with humans and whales, dolphins and porpoises.

Unlike so many other books about dolphins this book focuses only on the bottlenose dolphin. It gives the reader a basic idea of the life of this species and includes a lot of interesting facts about them. The authors are not writing down second hand info but are both researching these dolphins off the coast of Scottland. Instead of having school book like anatomical drawings and graphs this book remids me more like talking to a dolphin expert while going on a boat watching them in the sea.

I saw this book at a friend and liked the photos so much that I knew I needed it for my collection, too. Being a wildlife photographer (with a special focus on dolphins) I always enjoy looking at as good photos of dolphins as found in this book. This book makes an excelent gift for any dolphin fan.

I never knew how grand the bakeries of Paris where until I read Boulangerie! I wish we had a similar tradition in my home town. I love bread and soup above all other foods! Some day, when I visit Paris, I'll search the city with a copy of this pocket guide in my hand.
I also enjoyed the pictures of the boulangeries of Paris on the authors Web site: Dorseybooks.com

An Essential Pre-Paris-Trip Book

This book is a jewel. It made our first Paris trip that much more special by introducing us to some exceptionally fine bakeries. This pocket-sized book not only gives you a listing of the fine Boulangeries (organized by arrondisements, includes the address & phone number, closest metro or bus stop, when they are open, and what's special about each) but tells you where to go (nearby picnic spots) and eat the bread and goodies that you buy at these Boulangeries -- this is what truly made the book special. We tried "Robineau" in the 7th and "Gerard Beufort" in the 5th as listed in this book and we were not disappointed. Both had wonderful baked goods, the former within a short walk to the Champ de Mars and Eiffel, and the latter, a 3-minute walk away from Arenes de Lutece, the ancient Roman amphitheater which is a perfect picnic spot. You could use this book to plan your breakfasts and picnic lunches as a nice balance to the Bistro-dining in Paris.

Let's face it, whether you are visiting Paris for the first or the fifth time, there never seems to be enough time to squeeze everything in. Everyone should take at least one evening or one afternoon for a 3-star dinner or lunch; but, when you are busily going from sight to sight, who has that kind of time? This book is perfect for letting you find bakeries with a wonderful range of foods you can carry away with you. I found that the descriptions of each bakery carried their specialities and any unusual items they carried. The first time you find a conveniently located establishment when you are trying to get from point A to point B, you will know what a treasure it is. The size makes it very convenient to take with you as well.

This is a really interesting & enlightening read. You get a real feel for the way the mind of the Samurai worked some 400 years ago. It's miraculous & very fortunate for us that copies of such books survived that various warring periods & times of great upheaval in Japan over this time.

This subject is still relatively new to me & there appear to be several different versions of the Bushido around (?). This one by Daidôji Yûzan appeared between 1639 - 1730, which is some years before the one that draws the main amount of interest and my question is who's copying who?

This one seems to be more complete & covers a wider range of subjects that the "other" version by Tsunetomo Yamamoto, sometimes referred to as the "Hagakure". Tsunetomo was born some 20 years after Daidôji & lived between 1659 - 1719.

This book is presented in 56 short treatises about the proper way a Samurai should live & conduct himself.

There is another & later copy of this book by Thomas Cleary called "The Code of the Samurai" ISBN: 0804831904 in which he lists 44 such duties of a Samurai. Whether or not some of these duties have been grouped together I can't yet say, however, either copy of the book are fantastically insightful & interesting.

A great translation which must have been difficult for the authors & a fairly easy read. Although the subject is a little dry it's not at all heavy & would be enjoyed & very useful to anyone practicing any form of [traditional] martial art.

It's a shame that modern day books on morality are not written this way...

When someone becomes fascinated by older Japanese culture, this is a definite must read. Though written in the 17th century, a lot of common sense morals can be found throughout this book. There are some items that will most likely not pertain to the reader, such as "Choosing a horse" (book 1), however there are some that everyone in everyday society from any nationality should live by every day of their lives. (ex. "A Warrior Who Strikes His Wife is a Coward" (book 2), and "Loyalty Includes Longevity" (book 3))

When you are finished reading, I strongly suggest that you find someone that you can loan or give this book to that can take something from it.

LOOKING FOR A BIRTHDAY GIFT, CONFIRMATION, GRADUATION, BAR MITZVAH, OR "JUST BECAUSE' GIFT?....."Buster's Christmas Letter" will fill the bill. WOW!

It is a wonderful book. Not necessarily a Christmas book, although Buster's Christmas lettere is included.

Humorous and poignant, it is the true tale of a dog and his family; a very functional family, as you will see. It should be a model and inspiration for anyone.

The story is beautiful and "Buster's Christmas Letter" is also beautiful from its cover - to the color pictures - to the last page.

Even if you aren't a "dog person," you are going to LOVE this book! Buster's Christmas Letter is the book you'll want to give to everyone you know. Wilson writes simply and clearly, with a thematic message that's timeless: feelings are more important than things. Buster's Christmas Letter reminds us what's really important in life: family, relationships, and telling the people we love how much they mean to us. My family loved reading it aloud. Buster's life, adventures, and impact on his wonderful family, the Wilsons, touched us deeply. I heartily recommend this book. Someone should be working on the movie!

I found this book at a time in my life when I was headed in a bad direction. Some have even suggested that if I didn't change my ways I might soon find myself in the "big kennel in the sky." After digging through this autobiographical account written by an Australian shepherd, I realized that maybe my problems weren't so bad. Buster's Christmas Letter is the perfect inspirational chew toy for this holiday season. Think: a canine Profiles in Courage. This furriffic book will will bring tears to your eyes and leave your howling from laughter. Take a bite out of this one if you're in need of a wake up call about facing life's troubles heard on. If this book is all that Alan Sandage did for astronomy it would still be an enormous contribution. It provides semi-technical survey of all the work and people at the Mt. Wilson observatory up to early 1950's. Sandage does not merely list papers and projects and reproduces somebody else's opinion on them, he provides his own excellent authoritative analysis and summaries. As a scientist, he is known for strong opinions, but such personal angles can either be easily spotted or are largely smoothed by the perspective of a lifetime experience. The book is a work of love, actually worship. Anyone interested in MWO, or history of solar physics, stellar physics, or observational cosmology will benefit from this book.

I received my copy of this book in fine condition and very promptly. The price of $80 is in line with what everyone selling this book is asking. The price is a bit high but that is true with any book of limited release. The book itself has a few very minor errors. This is the best history of the Mount Wilson Observatory which I have every seen. The only way to get a more comprehensive history is to have access to the Observatorys libary. Then you would have to spend years reading thru hundreds of volumns of techincal work for the same information.

Mount Wilson's Golden Age

Review Date: 2005-02-17
The first half of the 20th century was a golden age at the Mount Wilson Observatory. It was there that many of the most important steps in riddling out the secrets of stellar evolution and the expansion of the universe were made. Allan Sandage's delightful history recounts both the scientific advances made at the observatory, and tells the reader something of the brilliant but often eccentric people behind those discoveries. The author does have a distinct point of view -- he is a champion of the role of this observatory in the progress of astronomy -- but that brings a unity to the story. Some minor errors and typos have slipped through the editing, but overall this is a wonderful book. It is, however, a book that will be of most interest to readers who are already familiar with topics such as spectral classification and the Hubble Law.

Truman. An entertaining one hour speech peppered with anecdotes covering the failures & successes of Truman. There may never have been a person to succeed to the president as unprepared & in such a time of national crises. We were about to invade Japan with perhaps two miilion men & 600,000 casualties. One thing he did know. He could not be Franklin Roosevelt. Nobody could. He had to be Harry Turman. He knew himself, grew into the job & ranks as one of our near great presidents. Apparently the most important experience of his life was World WarI which he could have avoided in several ways. He found he was brave, he could lead men in adversity & he liked it. He had known disappointments, hated farming, failed as a businessman & was largely ignored as "The Senator from Pendergast." He was honest, stubborn to a fault, loyal, humble but most of all confident in his abilities. You get a flavor of all this in a much too short tape. Read McCullough's "Truman."

I bought several hundred copies and gave them to managers. Put the character traits of Truman into today's business world and what an improved world it will be. BUY THIS TAPE!! Listen to it many times. It will have a HUGE effect on your life.

Doomed? Maybe. Great? Absolutely.

Review Date: 2008-04-29
I purchased this book because I was interested in reading "classic" horror/macabre fiction from Robert Bloch and Richard Matheson, as well as newer work from authors with disparate sensibilities, F. Paul Wilson and David Schow. I actually didn't realize this was not a text-based anthology, but a graphic-novel style anthology of short stories, from Doomed magazine.

But what an incredibly lucky accident. The stated goal of Completely Doomed was to bring back the feel of the "creepy" comics like Tales from the Crypt, an effort seen a few years back with Stephen King's "Creepshow." This volume met that goal admirably. The b/w artwork is outstanding, in a Frank Miller vein, with menace in the shadows, and film noir desperation bleeding from every panel. Several artists are involved, and their styles are disparate enough to create real visual interest.

The art is supported by very nice adaptations of the underlying stories, and the narrative drive of "good stories, well told" run through each piece. I loved reading an older story from Bloch with echoes of a Leave it to Beaver world gone mad, juxtaposed with the post-apocalyptic Nosferatism view from Horror's younger crowd. I would call out specific tales, but the truth is, I thought they all worked well when considering the author's era. I particularly enjoyed the early incarnations of motifs that have become classics...evil bugs, voodoo curses, tricky doppelgangers, and old deserted places with strange bespectacled men that you SHOULD NOT VISIT (but do.)

The book ends with a gallery of Doomed magazine covers. Several of these are exquisite, beautiful paintings that rival or surpass Norman Rockwell for detail, motion, and evocation of emotion. If horror short stories are your cup of tea (or maybe more accurately, cup of blood), then you'll enjoy this graphic anthology.

Advisory things: The gore is there, but very consistent with the "creepy comic" genre. It's artfully done, and hidden in shadows for the most part. There is some nudity, but artful and not pornographic. A small dose of implied sex, nothing explicit. (And, of course, because the genre requires it, if you have sex, you die.)

Best of its kind since EC

A THROWBACK TO 1970'S HORROR MAGS
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2007-08-04
The bronze age of comics is the most overlooked of the various comic book eras. It doesn't have the historical significance of the Golden Age, the panache of The Silver Age's rejuvenation of comic books, or the gritty realism of the Modern Age. But one thing that the Bronze Age could boast, that none of the other eras could, was the great black & white horror magazines of the 70's. Because they were magazines and not comic books, they did not have to be submitted to the dreaded Comics Code Authority, and were able to do stories which would not have been permitted under the code. Magazines like Creepy, Eerie, and Vampirella boasted impressive artistic talents, including many veterans of EC Comics: Reed Crandall, Al Williamson, Wally Wood, Frank Frazetta, and Johnny Craig. These magazines, along with those put out by Skywald during the same period continue to be enormously popular among collectors and horror fans.

IDW Publishing has certainly channeled the spirit of those great old magazines with Doomed Magazine, a throwback to the 1970's both in style and substance. Completely Doomed is a 240 trade paperback collecting some of the best work from Doomed featuring the work of legendary horror writers Robert Bloch, Richard Matheson, David J. Schow, and Paul F. Wilson. Like Creepy and Eerie, Doomed has its own host presiding over the stories and supplying introductions, the lovely Ms. Doomed. Artists contributing to the book include: Eduardo Barreto, Toby Cypress, Mike Hoffman, Nat Jones, Ted McKeever, Tony Salmons, and Ashley Wood. As you page through the book you'll note that all of the artists are working in a style similar to those old mags. The art is all in glorious black and white with very liberal uses of zip-a-tone or screentone, which is almost a lost art among today's comics. I've always enjoyed the uses of zip-a-tone for creating textures and gradients that you don't get with mere pencil and ink.

The first story in the book is Matheson's "Blood Son" adapted by Chris Ryall with art by Ashley Wood. Jules is a strange little boy...a quiet loner whose first word was "Death!" When Jules turns 12 he discovers Bram Stoker's Dracula, and becomes obsessed with it...very obsessed!

Scott Tipton adapts Matheson's story "Crickets" with art by Mike Hoffman. Hal and Jean Galloway are enjoying the last couple of days of their vacation at a lakeside resort when they meet a strange man who claims that crickets talk to him. The crickets call out names to him...the names of the dead!

"Slasher" by F. Paul Wilson is one of those tales with a twist ending in the great EC tradition. A man's daughter is murdered and he is out for revenge. An FBI agent informs him that the killer is an important witness in a federal trial and cannot be touched until SHE testifies. But this man's revenge cannot wait...Great story!

"Cuts" by F. Paul Wilson and Ted McKeever is a grisly tale of retribution when a writer wants revenge on the director who skewered his book when it was adapted into a film.

I've mentioned only a handful of the sixteen stories in the book. Trust me there's not a dud among them. Doomed has virtually channeled the spirit of Creepy and Eerie in this collection.

"Discretionary effort is the difference between how well people actually perform and how well they are capable of performing." When genuine interest is invested in people it is far easier to tap the discretionary effort that is harbored. An engaged leader knows this.

Somewhere along the corporate path, far too many leaders and managers lose sight of the importance of individuals' motivations for working and contributing. Most of us have worked for disengaged leaders or managers who never asked what motivated us. This book presents in a very simple manner a how-to to motivate people to give their best by engaging in their interests, motivations and passions at work.

I intend to keep Casey's book at work as a handbook to reinforce the keys of engagement. A great read.

The Cornerstones of Engaging Leadership is well written, easy to read, and makes perfect sense. I look forward to reading more books from Mr. Casey Wilson.

Cranial Nerves is great for helping medical and graduate students understand some of the spatial relationships with cranial nerves. It gives a clear and concise review of each cranial nerve and then adds some valuable clinical aspects. The use of color coding throughout the book helps the student to follow a cranial nerve or component throughout the various diagrams in a logical fashion. Most of my class has or has borrowed this book even though it is not even listed on the required or recommended readings for the Neuroscience class! All in all a wonderful book.

I wish I would have found this book earlier! It is an excellent resource for neuro/anatomy.

It maps out each cranial nerve, explains its course, functions, etc. in clear text. I liked how it had a different color for each modality (general sensory afferent, branchial motor, etc.) and how it explained areas in which there are differing opinions; it helped me to reason things out when texts/professors conflicted.

Thank goodness a kind soul handed this down to me, because I think $43 is a bit steep....

An enjoyable account of Wilson's epic journey around the Emerald Isle. Fascinating background info on his compulsion to tour and his quest for sponsorship, followed by a vividly written account of the trip itself, including abduction by "pirates", the theft and return of his kayak and an unforgettable encounter with Fungie the dolphin. The author's genuine affection for Ireland and its fascinating culture permeates the book, and he includes snippets of history and myth that make the towns and islands he passes come to life. There are many laugh-out-loud anecdotes and encounters that you will feel compelled to read out loud to your spouse/roommate/dog. Wilson is an accomplished adventurer and a talented writer as well.
