Margo loves to travel and write about her experiences. In this guide she gives useful Italian Phrases for Hotel Reservations, tells you where to find bookstores and explores centrally located hotels in 16 Italian cities. Travelers all over the world trust the Hello guides and the first part of this book is filled with wonderful letters from people who also read books by Rick Steves and Fodor. They love how Margo personalizes the experience by giving tips on where to shop for groceries, where to find Internet cafes and even where to do your laundry. She explains why less is more when thinking about luggage and I was smiling as I read about her adventures with suitcases on cobbled streets and running through the rain.

If you want to take a trip without relying on travel agents or want to make your trip more affordable, then Margo's books have a lot to offer. Even travel agents rely on her books! This is her tenth book in the series and she wrote her book about Italy while traveling with her husband. So romantic!

You can select hotels bases on the number of people or fun things like "fabulous sea view." The chapter on Florence is very entertaining. You can choose from walking tours to day trips and the list of bookstores also has the times they are open. There are amusing details about restaurants and Margo explains where to find the best sandwiches, although the owner is a little brusque. The list of "unusual things to pack" make your trip so much more comfortable and enjoyable.

The unique thing about these books is that Margo and her husband pay for all their expenses, so you get the real and honest approach and none of the hotels or restaurants have paid to be included in this book. The pictures throughout the book make this a charming guide with a wonderful personal approach and a sense of adventure.

Julie Wilson has written comments on Ester. She focuses on the symbolism inherent in the story of Ruth and while that can sometimes become tedious, it does help to make the story relevant to Christians today.
While I don't know that I agree with all her conclusions, I found the perspective presented a very helpful one, particularly in seeing the bigger picture of how God works in the details of his people's lives to reveal himself. It shows a God who remains the same, with the same intention of saving his people. For me it transformed the book of Ruth from a mildly interesting history lesson to a detailed painting of God.
Though the style of writing is sometime a bit disjointed in logical flow, it is VERY worthwhile reading!

Through the lives of two women, Jew and Gentile, Julie immerses the reader in God's prophetic plan for the world. As they journey together, His plan for restoration and wholeheartedness unfolds - for all of us. This is a fascinating in-depth study, brilliantly written, yet easy to understand. I recommend it highly for mature Christians, men and women alike, who are seeking a new dimension in their walk with the Father.

Drawing from imagery in the book of Ruth, Homecoming exhorts readers to recover wholeheartedness in their pursuit of God, to reconcile past disappointments with God and journey toward a brighter future. The book echoes themes taught in the popular John Eldredge series, Wild at Heart and The Journey of Desire, but with a greater emphasis upon attaining mature intimacy with God as the Bride of Christ. The book gives lots of practical advice concerning how to grow in spiritual intimacy. It is an excellent resource for individual or small group study.

The Book of Ruth is about 3 pages long in most Bibles. In Homecoming, Julie Wilson creates a study of it that is 304 pages long, and more intricate--and intriguing--than anything I've ever seen about this Old Testament Book. Anyone who has ever said, "I don't understand the Old Testament," should read this book. The author has really done her homework and offers numerous cross-references to help you see how this story foreshadows the coming of Christ and the relationship of the Church as the Bride of Christ. But rather than being a ponderous treatise, it is a lighthearted and joyous look at what a mature faith can be. An important theme throughout is "spiritual friendship" and how believers can help each other through difficult times. Homecoming really opened my eyes to the Old Testament, and my heart to the notion of a "romantic relationship" with my Savior. Read it and you'll see what I mean!

I'm a typical middle-class US urban-dweller. I tend to take for granted our plumbing and sanitation systems, even though I remember my childhood stays on my grandparents' farm: outhouse, hand-pumped water, and all.

Therefore, I need the information in this book, and I'm delighted that it's so well written. So far, my world travels have been mostly in developed countries. But I hope to travel more extensively in the future, and I'll consult this book before each trip.

It's easy and fun to read, and the information just might save your vacation - if not your life. Highly recommended.

Good advice for staying healthy on the road

Review Date: 2006-09-05
Looking for a book on squat toilets, getting the runs, and getting the runs while using a rough squat toilet? Not the best mealtime read, but good preparation for what the road throws at you. There's a wealth of info on eating right, drinking right, the risks of seafood, and keeping the little ones healthy. The differentiating factor for this book though is it doesn't stop there. Where else can you get a whole chapter on toilet paper and the lack thereof, bathing in a stream, or what to do when it's that time of the month and you're on a mountain ascent?

Throughout the book there are short snippets from doctors, from aid workers, and from others with life experience combating nasty bugs and diseases. If you're a parent wanting to make sure your about-to-leave child knows how to keep healthy, or you're the type who likes to be ready for anything, this is a valuable book. Anyone about to go off on a long-term volunteer assignment in a rural environment should make room for it in the pack.

You just don't realize how few early picture books featuring African-Americans there are out there until you stumble across one that's really fantastic. Looking at Karen Baicker's enjoyable, "And I Can Do It Too!", I'm struck by how she has taken such a simple subject and applied it to a variety of situations. More impressive by far, however, are Ken Wilson-Max's brave and deceptively simple illustrations to the story. If you're looking for something to read to those antsy early readers that let's them play along and join in on the chorus, this book's for you.

The book jacket to this story puts it best when it says that this is truly a tale about, "growing up surrounded by love". The little protagonist in this story is doing her darndest to do everything the grown-ups around her do. Her dad pours orange juice? "I can do it too!" Her grandpa reads to her? "I can do it too!" You get the idea. The thick paints employed by skillful Wilson-Max are bright and colorful. They expertly convey everything from a fancy tea to a tender moment of hugs. Additionally, the sturdy pages in this book hold up well to little hands. As for the pictures, there are no tiny details here, making this book a perfect one for group storytimes. You can make out every person and action in this tale from quite a distance. And those brushstrokes. Those wonderful wonderful brushstrokes. You can tell Wilson-Max had a lot of fun painting these pictures. It's a lovely story told with eloquence and style. A perfect story for any little one that's just getting the gist of everyday chores and actions.

A wonderful book for a toddler

A very simple but age-appropriate story for a two-year-old: in a series of incidents, the toddler narrator observes something that father or mother or uncle or older neighbor can do, and then asserts "I can do it too!" The lively and brightly colored illustrations confirm that she can, though not always in the same way.

A great book to share with a child who wants to do things him or herself. As a bonus, it's printed on unusually heavy paper (not cardboard, paper), making it easier for little hands to turn the pages without tearing them.

Just the best reference book on chest imaging. Lots of useful boxes, great emphasis on differentials, good pictures in all modalities. I'd like to see more histology pics on the edition. I'm a fan of Nestor Muller's books, but this one is superior to his recent release (Expert Radiology Series). For a resident I'd recommend Webb and Higgins' book. Hansell's text is quite easy to read but it's too long for a thoracic imaging rotation. I recommend it for thoracic imaging fellows and someone who wants a more in-depth text.

A valuable book for those who wish to remind their children - and themselves - of the utter horrors of a brutal war. While not for very young children, it would be a great way to get one's family to think about war and its violence and, sometimes, its absolute necessity.

I read this book while resting my feet at Book Expo 2000. At least three people stopped to ask me about it because they were so taken by the illustrations. This picture book for young people intersperses breathtaking illustrations for the poem "In Flanders Field" with background on World War I and the story of the writing of this poem. A deeply affecting and touching book, it will give young people a personal view of war, particularly this war. Unfortunately, many children as well as adults know nothing about World War I. This book is a fine introduction and a good war to broach a painful topic. By any standard, it is well-well written and thoughtful.

This lovely book is a perfect introduction to Veteran's Day or Remembrance Day or World War I. The story of John McCrea and WWI flows through the book, interspersed with lines from the poem, "In Flanders fields." It discusses the significance of the date, November 11 and supplies interesting details from the period. Over two page spreads Wilson also interprets lines from the poem with lovely paintings that fill in more information about soldier life.

This book is very popular with kids who like nonfiction "war" books.

Cultural references to this poem abound. The poem is a classic that should be shared with young people today.

Growing up in Canada, I and every other child knew this poem inside and out. Every Rememberence Day[Nov.11th], we recited it, wore our poppies and then walked down to the cemetery to commemorate all the soldiers who died during the different wars. We talked about it in class for a few weeks.I gave it to my children after I found the book at a Canadian bookstore the week of it's release. They in turn took it school and their teachers read it to their classes. As a education major, I will use it in my studies and then as a teacher for my class to learn about the World Wars. The art work is beautiful and the story enclosed is lovely too, if ever can be of a book about war. It's too bad this isn't used over here in the States.

Excellent essays

I was first introduced to E.O. Wilson when I went on a butterfly count a few years ago. As we were looking for butterflies and counting what we saw, the count leader (who is an incredibly smart naturalist) made a passing refernce to E.O. Wilson. That day I came home and got onto Amazon to find out more. This was the first book I came across and I'm so glad I did. It is filled with about 12 essays on different topics in nature. They're broken down into three groups:
Animal Nature, Human Nature (In the Company of Ants is one of these)
The Patterns of Nature (The Bird of Paradise: Hunter and Poet is one of these)
Nature's Abundance (The Little things that run the world is one of these)

The writing style is easy to read, fun, interesting - I learned a lot reading the essays but also just found the reading fun. I love how Wilson pulls back the stories to ideas/concepts that are relevant to us so we can put things in perspective. Great book! Any nature lover would enjoy it

This book is an enduring collection of ideas expressed with lucidity and wisdom.

The author has a very easy to read style. It is very succinct and eloquent. If you love nature, you will love this book.

The chapter "In the company of ants" is probably one of the best chapters [of any book] that I have ever read. I found the hierarchal structure of the leaf-cutter ants very intriguing. What marvellous little creatures! I'll never look at an ant the same way again. Here's a little snippet for you:

"Watch where you step. Be careful of little lives. Feed them crumbs of coffeecake. They also like bits of tuna and whipped cream. Get a magnifying glass. Watch them closely. And you will be as close as any person may ever come to seeing social life as it might evolve on another planet."

I also loved three other chapters entitled, "Humanity seen from a distance", "The little things that run the world" and the final chapter, "Is humanity suicidal?". Other interesting chapters are about snakes, or rather serpents, sharks, altruism & aggression, etc. The essence of the book is really as the title suggests, "in search of nature".

Towards the end, a sincere and legitimate message is delivered by the author. It is a very moving assertion and everyone, yes everyone, should read it. Edwin O. Wilson is proof that Carl Sagan wasn't the only good author.

Stimulative reading

Review Date: 2002-08-28
This book is not as provocative as 'On human nature'. The writing is not as combative, although it has many of the same themes :
- human aggression (he does not agree with Konrad Lorenz - even aggression evolves rapidly - and Erich Fromm - humanity is not suicidal -)
- the fallacy of ethics (human nature is to a large extent the heritage of a Pleistocene hunter-gatherer existance)
- the place of mankind in Gaia (the totality of Life on Earth). He argues clearly that if human beings were to disappear, the world would go on little changed and would heal itself from the damage inflicted by mankind. The only necessary animals, for Gaia and also for the human species, are the invertebrates.
Perhaps the most controversial point of the book are his arguments in defence of racial differences in the human populations, based on genetic components. But as always with E. O. Wilson, his argumentation is based on solid research and clear thinking.

While reading The Innkeeper's Wife, the Christmas story that I have heard my whole life seemed to come alive. This beautifully written story made me feel like I was right there seeing the birth of our Savior through the eyes of a dear sister. It is so exciting to me that this book tells how it may very well have happened! The author's description of the details and moments of the event brings the reality of our Savior's birth closer to home and not "out there" in the distance. I truly love this book!!! It is simple yet heart stirring and I believe the author was inspired. I shall be reading it to my grandchildren for many years to come and I predict that it shall be a classic.

I absolutely loved this different perspective of the Christmas story! Of course, Mary would've needed help in childbirth and of course, it could've been the innkeeper's wife. Yet, why do we not read about her in the Bible? This very well written book answers that question. The author made the story very real and I really connected with it! It is a great Christmas gift and I have given it to many friends.

I loved this book. Lately I've been passing along to other people my Christmas books and decorations that are not Christ-centered, and whittling down my collection to things that seem to me to be more germane to the season. This lovely book certainly will take a prominant place in my reworked collection. The story is beautifully told, and very plausible. If events didn't happen exactly like Ms Wilson imagines, well, they certainly could have!

The illustrations are also lovely, although I wish the Holy family had been more middle-Eastern looking. Oh well.
