Real history that reads like fiction

My husband bought this because we're friends with one of the ace pilots who flew off her. I picked it up to read the parts about that friend and was hooked. Every page is a shining example of the fact that America is "the home of the free because of the brave". The authors have woven interviews with pilots and crew members, journals, and ship logs to make a very readable book that puts it's readers in the pilot seat for some incredible battle recollections. We had visited the Intrepid in New York in 2001. I wish I had the insight of this book to help understand that visit. We plan to go back to visit her again since the restoration. When we were there, we were overwhelmed with the docents' personal stories and the emotional reaction of the young people who were visiting with us. I'm ordering another copy for a "loaner".

INTREPID appears, at first glance, to be just another book about a warship. Not until I got into it did I realize this was a story about people, many of them incredibly heroic. That this ship is still with us sixty-five years since she was commissioned is a miracle. Even more of a miracle is how she survived five kamikaze strikes, a torpedoing off Truk, fought her way through some of the greatest sea battles of all time, then soldiered through the Cold War and three combat tours in Vietnam. It's all here, told from the viewpoints of gallant Americans serving aboard a gallant ship. Highly recommended.

Gandt & White "Ace" It....

Another naval aviation book success from the computers of Bob Gandt and Bill White, a non-fiction one this time that already has been number 518 on the best sales list of Amazon.com after only three days on the street. This book was also selected by the Military Book Club as a primary selection in the near future.

Despite the more than tepid review of "Publisher's Weekly" quoted above, "INTREPID" is a well written, tautly scripted military history written by a veteran naval aviator and commercial airline captain with over 30,000 hours of air time. His dialogue of the people involved in over 60 years of the USS Intrepid's history is either taken from tapes and manuscripts and interviews of those involved or derived from Gandt's deep knowledge and research of things naval, not contrived as claimed above by the "Weekly." The authencity is real, it is there, and it makes for first class reading as noted by other military authors above.

The occasion of the totally renovated USS Intepid's return to the Sea, Air & Space Museum in New York City's harbor is the underlying reason for this work, but it turns out to be much more than that. The over half a century of active duty service for this nation and as a living naval history center that all can visit makes Intrepid very special. And so is this book. Gandt and White, the latter the initial curator and now president of the Intrepid's museum site, have collaborated to write a truly definitive and gripping account of this famous vesel's career -- one so impressive that the U.S. presidential aspirant and former naval aviator who flew missions from the Intrepid, John S. McCain, wrote the foreward to this volume. For him to do so gives the reader a unique perspective as to the authencity of this brand new tale of the especial and very historic aircraft carrier.

For all involved in this production, from publisher Random House to the two authors, to John McCain, who recognizes good naval aviation history when he sees it, the ultimate navy accolade: "Well Done!"

discrimination to stop discrimination it still discrimination
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-12-13
Its no secret why young American males are underachieving, although you would be hard pressed to find anyone who will admit the fact. Affirmative Action, meant to eliminate discrimination did just the opposite. It not only promoted discrimination against males it implemented laws and programs to make sure males were discriminated against. If a young American male was lucky enough to find an employer who would hire him he would have to work along side a non-English speaking alien who was less qualified to do the job and at the same wage level as his unqualified co-worker who couldn't even understand the instructions for doing the job. In addition the more qualified male was pigeon-holed while the unqualified co-worker received wage increases and promotions. How discouraging can it be to be in a job and knowing no matter how hard or how- good a job you did you were not going to be rewarded with pay increases or promotions and yet a person working with you who was not even an American citizen and could not even speak English would. In addition to racial discrimination males were discriminated against sexually during the same era and still are. Males are not just discriminated against in work but from the time they begin school up to and throughout most colleges and universities. At home parents were encouraged to discriminate against male children and 'daughters only day' in which daughters (not sons) would be taken to spend the day at work with a parent. Statistics given which demonstrated minorities and women were being discriminated against were manipulate to justify the discrimination against males. The jobs of women who worked lower paying temporary or part-time work to supplement family income was included in statistics comparing average wages of men and women as well as the lower starting wages of new employees which were compared to wages of men who had 20+ years of yearly wage increments. Men were no longer bread winners nor loving protectors of the family they were redefined in the most negative way possible as abusers of their spouses and their children. No one dared step forward to dispute these false claims less be terminated in place of employment or be accused of being a sexist or racist.

Government-imposed quotas were explicitly banned in the 1964 Civil Rights Act Nevertheless they immediately spread through the economy. For most of that time, they received eerily little media and even less academic attention. Of some 1,300 papers given at a recent American Sociological Association conference on Race and Ethnic Relations, the topic attracted only one.
The result: the situation summarized in the title of Lynch's new paperback,Invisible Victims: White males and the Crisis of Affirmative Action (Praeger, $14.95). The ideal of merit hiring has been subverted by politicized hiring, with white men unable to defend themselves against open discrimination. But quotas bring other problems, including conflict among the "protected classes'' they benefit, and growing racial polarization, particularly as the articulate middle class begins to suffer.

"Race-norming [adjusting test scores to produce racially proportionate results] alone affected millions of people,'' he says. "Many state and local governments did it with their GATBs [General Aptitude Test Batteries, taken by job seekers and supplied to potential employers]. And private testing agencies did it to protect their clients against lawsuits--they called it ''EEO-proofing.'' (The federalEqual Employment Opportunity Commission muscles business into quotas.)

But Lynch is not surprised at the blunder. "There's incredible denial,'' he says. He cites California Democratic Representative Don Edwards, a mouthpiece of the civil rights establishment, claiming on the New York Times Op Ed page that quotas did not exist--within weeks of three Supreme Court decisions about them. And, using similar Orwellian doublethink, supporters insisted that the 1991 Civil Rights Act did not impose quotas, although its key point was to override the Supreme Court and make work force racial imbalance prima facie evidence of employer discrimination.

The word "quotas" is largely avoided, because public opinion polls found that 80% of the public opposed them. Instead, we hear of affirmative action (AA), equal opportunity employment, and the goal of diversity in higher education and the workforce. AA at work in the workforce, & reverse discrimination suits filed by white males, are well-known and occasional news items; likewise, instances of white males passed over for promotion are also known. But the insidious nature of race-and-gender preference as the determinative principle in academic hiring has not received the attention it deserves.
Lynch describes how affirmative action began as a series of directives designed to encourage recruitment of qualified minorities and women. Under this version, women and minority applicants would compete on a non-discriminatory, colorblind, and gender neutral basis. Today, a more radical version of AA exists, in which women and minorities are to be hired in proportion to their numbers in the general population. What was once a temporary, transitional expedient to redress inequalities has become a permanent, institutionalized feature of academic hiring practices.
Proponents of AA identify white males as the past perpetrators of discriminatory hiring and promotion practices. That present day white males might suffer loss from AA seems justified. But as Lynch notes, older white elite members imposed AA quotas upon white, working, middle class baby boomers and, to a growing degree, their children.
The generational cleavage between white male perpetrators of discrimination and present white male victims of AA has been ignored. Why should the latter group redress historical inequalities an earlier generation created?
The hypocrisy of the whole situation needs to be underscored. The very universities that accept gifted students into their graduate programs--including many white males--were the first to shut out white males when job opportunities arose.
Part of the American dream is that education is the key to unlimited opportunities. But just be sure to check your sex and skin color first.

Frederick Lynch has done an excellent job of exposing the US Democratic party's betrayal of its's white electorate in enforcing Affirmative Discrimination without a mandate.
The lives of an entire generation of white American males were severly damaged by this evil and unjustified racial engineering program.Lynch goes on to ponder the seeming conspiracy of silence among the mass media and their refusal to highlight the plight of white male victims, even though there was no dearth of evidence.

However, as insidious as the the application of Affirmative Discrimination was in the US, it pales in comparison to what is currently being perpetrated in South Africa. For every white male job applicant in South Africa there are approximately twenty to fifty black applicants, yet it is the minority which legislation enforces discrimination against. The silence of the Western media on this matter(particularly the BBC)borders on the criminal.(The ANC controlled media does not deserve mention as it is merely a propaganda engine.)
Lynch details how American organisations applied an AA selection criteria which resulted in many meritous white applicants being arbritarily rejected.Instead of ensuring that all meritous applicants, regardless of race, be allowed an equal chance to compete, non-meritous black applicants were given preference over skilled white applicants - pure racial engineering. In South Africa the ANC uses demographic and occupational statistics in an attempt to justify its' heinous racial engineering agenda - this is not too different from the Nazis philosophy as expoused by Goebbels.During the Nazis invasion of Eastern Europe they were quick to identify those strategic political and economic positions which were held by Jews and to demand their removal and replacement with Nazis. This is the very same strategy being pursued by the racist ANC regime which demands that the majority of skilled positions available in the economy be occupied by blacks, and imposes substantial financial penalties, and refuses lucrative government tenders, to those organisations who fail to comply speedily enough. This effectively dooms an entire generation of young, white South African males to a future of poverty, regardless of their educational level. This is tantamount to ethnic cleansing and ethnic cleansing is Genocide. This, not crime, is the primary reason for the brain drain from South Africa as many white males would otherwise be reduced to the level of beggars.

While it is unlikely that any of the US Deomcratic party perpetrators will be brought to book, it is a neverending source of puzzlement to me that many white Americans continue to vote for a party which so blatantly sold them out.
Affirmative Action is a Gross Human Rights Violation and must be declared a Crime Against Humanity.
It goes without saying that its' victims should be paid substantial reparations for the economic, psychological and emotional trauma they suffered by having their basic human rights violated by Nazis style social engineering.

An Extraordinary Man Provides a Truthful Account of Iraq

Review Date: 2008-05-09
Anglican priest Canon Andrew White belongs at the top of any person's list of heroes, and this book on Iraq should be a primary source for anyone's perspective on Iraq. Canon White has been involved in reconciliation and peacemaking in Iraq since before the war when he pursued alleviation for Iraq's suffering multitudes and religious dialogue with its various religous leaders.

Since the war, he has been tirelessly active in the struggle to bring about peace in Iraq. His account illustrates the activity of peacemaking, one that experiences joy and suffering, glory and grief. He paints an extraordinary picture of Iraq that I don't think has been conveyed through any other means. He is unique in his relationships with all parties involved in Iraq, so his perspective is comprehensive. Also unlike any other account of Iraq I have seen or read, his account incorporates the spiritual insights regarding the region and its history.

Canon White tells the story of horrible suffering during Saddam's reign of terror and during the chaotic violence in recent years. He gives the big picture of horror and some individual stories. He also tells of the big hope he has for the country and how he has witnessed God's glorious miracles in the country and in individual stories amidst the suffering. His writing is clearly an attempt to be honest while conveying his hope and love for Iraq.

One thing is for sure from reading this book. You will see Iraq and its people differently, and it is likely you will develop an earnest prayer for their peace.

Nora McCabe Is Famine Ireland's Anne Frank

Nothing can ever really be compared to the courage displayed by Anne Frank in her diary, but Cynthia Neale's Nora McCabe in Neale's famine book, THE IRISH DRESSER, comes close. Both Nora and Anne experience day-to-day life in a world gone mad. While nothing can extinguish their inner lights, the world they live in is pitch black, terrifying and cruel. The wonder of Anne Frank has always been how did she manage to cope at all. She has provided unending inspiration for any of us who is ever tempted to indulge in self-pity or despair. Neale's 13-year-old Nora McCabe, like Anne, sees the magic in the ordinary things around her-chickens with personalities and the thrill of an upcoming party where there might actually be food to eat, instead of the hopelessness which has wrapped itself around her family. Anne Frank hid in a cramped apartment in Amsterdam, and Nora McCabe literally hides in a piece of furniture-the Irish dresser, as she, unlike Anne, manages to escape from starvation and political oppression and start over again in New York. If you want to get a real sense of what the Great Famine in Ireland must have been like from a child's point of view, when over one million died and two million fled the island, read this book.

This book tells you what really happened in Ireland during the Potato Famine. It is also a story about family strength and love. Nora and her family are very near starving to death, so their father decides to move them all to America. The family gets split up on the boat to America, and a china cabinet becomes Nora's magical place. Sometimes this story is a little scary and sad, and sometimes it is full of hope and promise. But it is a story that needs to be told. If you have some Irish roots, this books helps you to understand your family history a little better.

Ahhh... the sexual revolution--30 years early!

You've probably heard of E.B. White--he wrote "Charlotte's Web" after all, quite possibly still required reading in many middle schools (as a lead-in to 2pac Shakur's poetry, I'm sure). James Thurber may be a bit more obscure to some of you, but he was an Ohio State alumnus (go Buckeyes! *cough*), an awesome cartoonist/artist, and an author possessed of a wonderfully ascerbic wit.

The combination of the two in this book is a rather uniquely bizarre experience that I found joyously uplifting.

The subject under discussion is indeed, in a rather obscure and indirect sense, sex. But we never *quite* seem to get there; non sequiturs abound, blank pages, discussions of how to avoid sex, bluebirds, flowers, a section on how children should explain sex to adults, and even a "letters from readers" chapter--but no actual sex. Lots of drawings, but nothing that anyone might find helpful for improving their sex life. (Bowling, yes. Bicycling, definitely. Obscure interpretations of unconscious artwork, absolutely. Sex, no.)

This book wasn't so much a reaction to Freud per se as it was to the wacky influx of psychologists and "sexologists", and their (unfortunately for us, entirely successful) attempts to complexify and obfuscate human behavior. This particular brand of snake oil started in the 20s and hasn't stopped flowing, and we're covered in an ever-growing deluge of how-to relationship manuals, self-help books, and other ludicrous efforts at explaining "the human condition".

White and Thurber's work explains, in the main, nothing. It asks more questions than it answers. The humor is dry and obscure, there are a ton of rather dated references, and if you're under 30 you'll probably need a dictionary. But...

if you need a laugh without a laugh track... you're fed up with "self-help" and "Men are from Saturn, Women are from Liverpool" type books... or you happen to think sex is vastly overrated (it is), give "Is Sex Necessary?" a try. You might be surprised at the answer.

Thurber's and White's text satirizing the hullabaloo that our dearest lunatic, Mr. Sigmund Freud, began takes whatever cake is being handed out for satirical writing. It's universally funny, lucid, and did I mention funny? It's hilarious. One should pull out one's thesaurus at this point to find other such words, and all will be a propos. The book should have been a trilogy.

There's no need to actually read this book if you're a male.

Simply carry it around, and you will find yourself approached by a wide variety of women who are amused and perhaps a bit threatened by the title.

Many of them will be interested in showing you the positive response to the question posed by the book's title.

It's quite astonishing, really. You have to try it to believe the results. Good luck.

First story so beautiful and poignant, it brought tears to my eyes. London displays a true understanding of the deeper reaches of nature. A remarkably real parable of the civilized dog brought back to his wild roots. "White Fang", longer and wildly overwritten, is nevertheless deeply affecting also. Romantic, sentimental, and perhaps somewhat unrealistic. Each story was wonderful and very individual, somewhat amazing considering there are 40 of them. "The Sea Wolf" was the best of all, I thought. The character of Wolf Larsen was just totally intriguing. And I have never forgotten (and will probably carry with me to my grave) a line from that book, uttered by Larsen. To paraphase - The most abundant thing on this planet is not air, or water or land. They are all perishable, or can be ruined or consumed in some way or another. It is life, life itself, that is everywhere. Wolf Larsen was one of the most unforgettable characters in fiction that I have ever run across. An amoral man to the nth degree.

I really enjoyed this book. I grew up Roman Catholic, but became very interested in "New Age" spirituality in my 20s (such as auras, chakras, reincarnation, psychic phenomena). At first, I thought that Christianity and my New Age interests were incompatible. This book, however, really highlighted how I could reconcile my love for Jesus and His teachings with my New Age beliefs. White Eagle draws a distinction between Jesus and the "Christ spirit." Chapter one states: "Through Jesus flowed the heavenly light, the Sun, the supreme light of the heavens. In your world you know that light by the name of Christ; and as this light came through the prepared channel, and Son of God, Jesus, you know this great one as Jesus Christ...Christ is that light which has manifested in degree through other teachers." I highly recommend this book.

When a work colleague had to fly to the UK for specialized medical treatment I turned to "Jesus Teacher and Healer" and in particular chapter IV "The Great Healer". This book reminds us that Jesus healed both the sick body and the troubled mind. If we are troubled we can still call on Jesus who will clothe us or our loved one in love. If we bring our burden to the Great Healer, talk to the Healer as a friend and listen to the response in our heart, we will be comforted and given strength. We will know that our loved one is being cared for by a greater love and a stronger power than our own. We should stop worrying about physical cares and material anxieties and concentrate on the sweet, gentle emotion of love; if we train ourselves to think in terms of love every moment of life, we will find that unconsciously a beautiful healing will take place. There is only one true source from which healing power flows and Jesus is the head of the healing ray.

Sometimes our bodies are out of harmony and then we need the light of Christ. When the body is sick it is in some way lacking the light; all disease will in due time be traced back to this lack, to the unconscious disharmony in the soul. There is a hold-up in the inflow of the light. When man understands his whole being, when he understands the working of his higher self so that body and spirit are functioning harmoniously, then the physical body will lose its diseased state. When we lay aside all mental anguish and turn within to that place of light, that well of intuition and spiritual sensitivity, then we become aware of the invisible company of healers and the power that they bring.

All ills come to help the soul to understand and to acquire wisdom. Karma is the opportunity given to each soul to learn wisdom and the wondrous love of God. God does not send us pain and suffering but the law of God says that inharmony in the soul sometimes has to work out through the physical body. It is in this way that the soul gains a deeper consciousness of the power of God. All life's experiences have one object - to gradually purify, to bring light into the whole being and to raise the mortal to the immortal. If we are able to learn and accept this then we have opened the door to those heights of spiritual glory that the saints and the illumined ones have been able to enjoy. We are children of God and within us is the God-power. It is the development of our soul that is the purpose of life and which will make us perfectly whole.

We draw to ourselves the conditions we think about so if we dwell on sickness, limitation, poverty or fear we set up a vibration which attracts these very conditions. We must train ourselves to set up a vibration of love, light, hope, confidence, and peace because it is God's will that we should create the kingdom of heaven about us. True prayer - complete surrender of the soul to God's will - sets up a vibration in the soul which goes right to the source of supply. God's will is that our bodies should be healthy, holy and able to enjoy all the good things of life. In the process we expand our little self into our great self or the Christ self. The first requirement for healing is to leave aside all disturbances created by the physical and material life and seek the innermost sanctuary where all is peace. Then the healing forces truly enter into the soul and body.

If you suspect that illness might be related to disharmony, then you will find this book full of valuable information.

Award-winning author Rickey Pittman presents Jim Limber Davis: A Black Orphan in the Confederate White House, a children's picturebook revealing the amazing true story of a young black boy rescued from his cruel guardian by Varina Davis, wife of Confederate President Jefferson Davis. Jefferson Davis registered Jim as a free black child and became his guardian; Jim was treated well and enjoyed happy times in the Confederate white house during the civil war. Yet when the Union won, Jefferson Davis was imprisoned and Jim Limber was taken away by Union soldiers. Jim Limber was displayed as a "slave" of Jefferson Davis, though he tried to protest that the scars inflicted upon him were from his first master, not from the former Confederate President. By the time Jefferson Davis was freed from prison, Jim Limber had disappeared, never to be heard from again - what happened to him remains a mystery to this day. Earthy illustrations by arts teacher Judith Hierstein add a complementary touch to this glimpse of a largely unknown and unseen side of the Confederate White House.

It is about time someone wrote about this tragic little boy. I have told this story to incredulous listeners for years. I am overjoyed to think that now more people will know this little boy's name and probable fate. A great Christmas gift with excellent art work and lively, readable text.

I enjoyed this novel from the beginning to the end. You are invited to witness a twisted love affair between three people. You'll learn that a man who loves two women is a man in trouble. Be sure to check out this novel and find out how Jim's life unfolds. Can true love survive? Jo Ella has a gift that I hope she continues to use. She can weave a tale that traps your imagination and makes you feel for her characters. I'm looking foward to more of her tales.

A marvelous and fascinating story that keeps the reader absorbed on every page. It reveals the humanity and struggles of Southern life during the Civil War era. Ms White involves the reader emotionally in this compelling story of love and the hardships of war. White is a wonderful storyteller that touches the heart. Her discriptions are so vivid that I felt I was living with her characters. A wonderful addition to one's library.

Jim's Courthouse written by JoElla White is a compelling story set in the Civil War days in upper South Carolina. Ms. White's depiction of the rural country side, events and characters makes for one of the best books I have read. This book is well written and although described as a "romantic" novel, it still lets the reader draw conclusions and encourages the readers imagination! Ms. White has done an outstanding job of joining fact and fiction. Jim's Courthouse is one book that you will not want to put down until the final page. I highly recommend you read this one, you will not be disappointed.

We Need More Northern Whitetail Books

As a northern deer hunter I am delighted with this book. Most of the whitetail deer books out there (at least the managment ones) are based in the south. Ozaga's book rings home with this Michigan guy.
The book is packed with great info on northern deer behavior. The photos are good and the research is sound. I wish there were more out there like it. So far, next to Alsheimer's deer books this is my favorite. I also just found a great northern food plot and habitat book called "Grow 'Em Right" by Dougherty and Dougherty which is right on the money up here in cold country.

I have been studying and hunting Whitetail deer for over 30 years and this book actually contains useful information. Too many times books of this sort are centered on some gimmick to kill the big one. This is not the case with Ozoga's work, you will come away with a deeper understanding of the deer's habits, social order and habitat requirements. Especially for the northern deer herd. For anyone who has an interest in Whitetails this is a must read.

An Excellent Choice For Any Deer Hunter

It is not often that one encounters a book that answers long standing questions, especially those that arise from the contradictions found in the popular deer hunting press. There is nothing Gee Whiz about Mr. Ozoga, he tells it like he sees it. When he doesn't know he tells you that too. This book is based on 30 years observation and experimentation on white tails at the Cusino Wildlife Research Station and dispels many of the myths and folklore regarding deer.

Be aware, however, that this book is not easy reading, but seems to be based on the discussion and conclusion sections of his research papers. It is approachable and yields to the diligent reader. It is well worth the effort and the price.

I agree wholeheartedly with Mr. Barton's review.
