I absolutely adored this charming tale! It is a delightful children's story that is perfect for any family that has experienced the anxiety of introducing a new baby into the home - and who with more than one child hasn't experienced that? This is truly a wonderful read for all ages.

I felt this book was cute and simple at the same time. The illustrations are in a unique quick draft style. This book leaves something to the imagination because of its simplicity. My only complaint was that because I bought it directly from Amazon, there was an enormous amount of packaging for such a light and thin book. However, that is no reflection to the quality and enjoyment I had when reading this book. Also, being from Brooklyn allowed me to appreciate this story more.

This is a solid book on whitetail hunting. There are plenty of tips and some new and interesting ideas and perspectives on hunting. Many of the photos come from their videos and frankly, some are unclear and blurred due to the conversion from video and/or poor choices of video frames (brush in the way, etc.). I think this is supposed to convey action happening but I don't think it works real well. Regardless, it was a new and novel approach and for that I still give it 5 stars. The photos that are not from video are great. If you enjoy the Drury's videos as I do, you'll love this book. I hope they'll publish more in the future.

I have been delighted with the wonderful response that this book has elicited from readers, as well as by the generous reception that it has had among teachers, librarians and reviewers. Most recently, it has been honored by YANKEE MAGAZINE, where the editorial staff has included GIANTS IN THE LAND on a list of the best 100 books ever written for children about New England. I hope that parents who enjoy reading GIANTS IN THE LAND with their children will also enjoy reading BULLOUGH'S POND, a book for grownups published under my childhood name, Diana Muir.

An absolutely superb book about the 18th century process of selecting, felling and transporting enormous New England hardwood trees so that they might be fashioned into masts for the king's ships. This book is filled with wonderfully detailed drawings and fascinating information. An example: "A first-class British warship was larger than Faneuil Hall in Boston. It was larger than the State House at Williamsburg in Virginia, larger than any building in the colonies from Maine to Georgia." If only there were more books like this! A must for any classroom.

I really like this book because all of it is true and it happened where I live. I like to think that the giants once grew where my house is. It is also special that the giants only grew in New England. The story is good to listen to or to read because it is telling real things in a way that is fun to hear. I particularly like the part about having to put smaller trees and branches underneath to keep it from breaking when the giant falls. My Dad and I have cut down small trees it is exciting when they fall. Learning history through books like this is great.

This book really is a gift. Once you read former Poet Laureate Robert Hass's beautiful introduction, you won't want to stop -- and you won't be disappointed. We're talking range here -- from Isabel Allende's Amazon to Lorian Hemingway's Arkansas to William Least Heat-Moon's Mississippi ... and from icy mountain torrents like the En in Switzerland to cultural main streets like the Seine in France and the Nile in Egypt and the Ganges in India, to rivers choked by industry and neglect like the Columbia in the U.S. -- honestly, you'll laugh, you'll cry.

Thanks for the River Time

If all of the world's rivers formed a giant continuous watershed (which in a sense they do), I'd put-in at the top and proceed to ride, glide and meander my way down the arteries of our earth. As I entered into each unique river system - Congo, Amazon, Seine, Futaleufu, Siuslaw, Mississippi, Narmada - the human and natural histories of each river would be revealed to me, uncovered, discovered like the layers of time and tide of the Grand Canyon. At the take-out I'd be changed. I'd better understand John Calderazzo's observation that a river can "turn into a state of mind, a kind of feeling." That is the gift of rivers. Of course, there is no such thing as a put-in at the top of the world's watershed, but just as good is Pamela Michael's book, "The Gift of Rivers." Turn the page, enter into river time, hear the stories, and fall in love with our watery ancestors, the world's rivers.

I feel fortunate to have had the chance to read the precious river stories contained in this collection. Some brought me and my friends to fits of laughter, others to tears and amazement- most of all they inspired us to listen more carefully to the rivers and waterways that bring nourishment and joy to all our lives.

Thank you Pamela Michael for sharing these stories from around the world with us!

I feel like I know Bri personally. I can't wait

Gold Thunder a NASCAR Treasure

This well-written biography of Rex White, one of NASCAR's Fifty Living Legends, will keep you reading to the end to find out the outcome of all White's adventures in the 1950s and 60s on the early NASCAR circuit. White drove before the ovals were paved, and seems as comfortable on dirt tracks and on the road to the next race as anywhere in the world. Along the way, readers will learn as much about the stock car racing sport as readers of "Seabiscuit" found out about the life of the jockey and the history of the horse racing sport. This is a very enjoyable book with delightful accounts of team high jinks throughout the story and enough historical material to keep NASCAR fans arguing for years.

This book is wonderful! I don't know how to describe it. I'm not into sports and all that, but this was a riveting read.

In many autobiographies, it seems obvious that someone wrote the book for that person. But in Gold Thunder, Rex's no-punches-pulled account blends with Anne's seamless strorytelling to the point that one can almost imagine Rex sitting next to you.

Gold Thunder is very fast paced. You put the key in the ignition, rev it up a few times, and then watch it go. As the motor purrs to a stop and you turn the last page, you'll wonder where all the time went

Anyone will enjoy this book, including non race fans like myself. I'm sure that many aspects of it make more sense to race fans, but the book itself is a wonderful introduction to racing. I had no idea that NASCAR had such a colorful history. What a cast of characters! It's enough to make even the newest fans feel a bit of nostalgia.

Here's another great auto racing book that will not only let you into the life of Rex White, it will teach you along the way. Stricken with polio at a young age, growing up in poverty and working countless hours on a farm never hindered little Rex White's passion to get behind the wheel of a race car. You'll find out why his father played a major role in his "race to finish, race to win" atttitude, and you'll meet all of the people who impacted Rex's life on his way to becoming a NASCAR champion. People like modified great Frankie Schneider, who became White's mentor, to partner Louie Clements are all given prime space in this book. Rex tells what racing was really like in the good old days, his love of Chevrolet, and the countless hours on the road traveling on nickles and dimes to get to the next race. A regular dinner was a package of Lance crackers. You'll also attend several wild parties honchoed by Clown Prince Joe Weatherly.
The best part of this book are the lessons learned thanks to a great work ethic. You'll laugh at the loads of funny characters that come into Rex's life, and then also deal with racing's dangers and the many tragic events that happened on the track. It's loaded with photos, tells of the great/not so great 1963 year at Daytona with his Mystery Motor 427 Chevy, GM's "on again, off again" policies on racing and becoming a member of the official Chevy racing teams.
Another can't miss book on the great sport of auto racing from the eyes of one of NASCAR's all-time best 50 drivers. He may have stood only 5'4" in stature, but this is a giant of a man when it comes to racing and winning in life.

I love this book..all children at some point in their lives experience arguments, perhaps heated at times between their parents and this can sometimes be frightening, as an adult I can remember the feeling of insecurity and sometimes fear that it instilled.. this wonderful book sensitively and with beautiful illustrations gets the message across that it's ok when they fight..the family bond is strong and secure and parents can argue and still love each other be it a "Good Day or Bad Day".

Another young widow gave me this book when my husband died. She said, "I know that people will send lots of books to you as they did for me. I don't know about you, but I certainly had no desire to read them. But I did read this one and it was a great blessing! It's not thick and it is easy to read."
Upon her recommendation, I read "Grieving: Our Path Back to Peace." It became my good counselor and reference point during the first year of widowhood. I referred to it many times and now I buy multiple copies to have on hand to give away.
Mr. White has experience as a hospital chaplain. He explains that the grieving process is best understood as a spiral: it includes the classic stages of grief, but we tend to revolve in and out of them, sometimes over and over again, rather than get through one stage and pass on to another. Also, the way we process and handle the grief can put us on the upward path to peace, or the downward path to despair.
This was comforting to me. Because of the circumstances of my husband's death I was in the "Numbness/Shock" phase for a long time, and I had little of the anxiety or anger responses that often accompany grief. This book helped me understand my emotions, know that they were normal, and know that God was right there with me. Two very simple charts helped me identify where I was at and where I was headed. It helped me put my feelings into words; to identify my feelings during this confusing and exhausting time was no small feat.
This book is full of practical advice and help. Not a word is wasted. It's a quick read, yet it touches all the important stuff, even anger towards God. It includes the tough questions--DID God allow this? and WHY did God allow this?--and handles them with honesty and compassion.
Whether the grief is over a spouse, a friend, a grandchild, son or daughter, this book is an excellent resource. It is written for both men and women, young and old. It's written with a high view of God, wise counsel, and practical advice and application. I've tried to be brief, there's far more than I can relate in a few paragraphs, but I'm sure you'll want more than one copy.

Time to heal

This is a fantastic book! In only 87 pages, he touches on almost all aspects of grief. I am particulary impressed with his candid honesty.

Grief is messy and doesn't come in neat packages. He allows the reader his or her mess and offers simple, small steps towards recovery. I especially appreciate his candor when he says, 'God is big enough to handle your anger and your probing.' Because the truth of the matter is that, in death, we become angry over the loss and void we feel.

With that said, I want to leave you with a quote from his book! 'The more vital a part of our life that person was, the more deeply we will feel the loss, and the longer it will take to transition from what was to what is.'

I understand this so completely! When my grandmother died, I missed her but she wasnt a part of my every waking moment. When my daughter died, it was as though I had died. It was as though a part of me withered away and it has been nearly four years. I am still working through the loss. Yes, it has gotten easier, but it is still a part of me.

As an undergraduate preparing to apply for graduate school, I was frustrated with the lack of material about social work programs. This book has so far been my most useful purchase concerning my application to grad school. It contains an informative general section about MSW programs, and then breaks down the admission and application process so that it is clear and understandable. There are also charts in the back to help monitor your application progress. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is buried under MSW paperwork and needs some direction and clarity in applying to schools.

After being out of undergraduate studies a few years, I was anxious about applying to an MSW program without help from professors or adviors that I would have had as help going straight from B.A. to a graduate program. But this book made up for lack of interpesonal connections to guide me through the application process.

The book was a very easy read, but with many great resources and suggestions for figuring out concentration areas, the supplemental statment, and even in reminders on common courtesy one might forget in the midst of anxiety.

This book was a great resource for me. Although you still need to put in all the work, this author gives someone with little other guidance a great outline for the process. I recently was admitted to a top MSW program and my book shows it...dog-eared, bent, highlighted...well worth the money.
