Interested in buying this book, or the one on meatpackers by Roger Horowitz? See the symposium on Halpern and Horowitz's work in the journal _Labor History_ 40:2 (1999). They have also jointly authored a collection of oral history interviews -- all available from Amazon

This is one of the best labor history books I've read: it is scholarly, no doubt about that, but SO, SO "readable." Almost like a novel at points. It's important, too, because it sheds much light on the way in which blacks and whites managed to unite around common interests. It also makes wonderful use of oral histories, so that the characters really come to life.

Rick B Halpern is a renowned commentator on the American Meatpacking Industry, and in this meticolusly researched book he chronicles the results of years of inquiry into what Chicago proletarians in hushed tones refer to as 'the big slaughterhouse.' Don't be put off by the picture of the Cow being killed on the front - there's plenty more meat inside and it's not covered in blood and guts. I was particularly impressed by his use of oral history. Too many modern historians ignore this valuable resource, but Halpern is a man on a mission and no lack of written records is going to get in his way. Overall, I found this book was a valuable contribution to an underresearched area and I believe should be read by anyone interested in modern Northern American Labour history.

I can't remember the last time I was so engaged by a book that I read it in a single day. I loved "A Dram of Poison" and highly recommend it. In the first half, it's Hitchcockian--a small group of ordinary people with complex emotional relationships beneath the surface and not fully understood, the situation building suspense inexorably. The reader knows an explosion is coming but cannot predict what form it will take. When the "break" comes, the tone of the book changes completely into a frenetic quest sequence that is increasingly hilarious. But the suspense starts to build again, and we remain on tenterhooks, as we wait to see whether the quest will be successful. In the meantime, the characters discuss life, and we are made acutely aware of how the reality of the relationships and situation we saw only dimly in the first half of the book are, in fact, very different from what we were lead to expect. The ultimate message (Yes, this little suspense thriller has a message!) is one of optimism and respect for individuality and how one shouldn't judge a book by its cover. A gem. Highly recommended.

A truly delightful book to read and re-read.

This book has plenty of intrigue and suspense when poison innocently labeled as olive oil goes astray. But it's also a life-affirming romp with an assortment of delightful characters whom you love enough to return to time and again. A celebration of life and of individuality.

Dreaming In Color Living In Black And White: Our Own Stories of Growing Up Black in America by Laurell Holliday is about a girl name Sarah. She thinks everything around her is full of darkness because of her skin color. She is a good girl and a very smart student. She does everything just to impress her teacher and all the people around her. The people don`t even care how hard she works. No matter what she does or write in school that is good or even excellent, the teachers never believe that she did it,just because she was black. One day she decided to quit her job as a cook and follow the footsteps of Dr.Martin Luther King Jr. to change the world. I think the book was good because it shows us how black people suffered. I recommend this book to everyone. Everyone should read this book! BY: MOHAMED

This book open minds telling story's of great blacks you never even heard of. It shows how much blacks took and how blacks are taking it now. I reccommend this book to young people.

Wow! This book was so touching and emotional. I read this book a few days ago after I saw it in the library. It consists of many different experiences of African-American people who suffered discrimination and racial abuse. It goes deep and shows you how it really was like to be them and how they felt. The *N word appears numerous of times so it might offend some people. I would really recommend this book to anyone!

I have been hearing about this e-Business stuff and associated acronynms for a while now: B2B, B2C, e-Commerce, EDI, m-Commerce..on and on. No book had so far explained to me what it all means to a DBA like me. This book finally explain in clear and simple terms what all the hoopla is about.

The author uses simple and clear language in explaining the issues that really matter to DBAs....both technical and non-technical aspects of the e-Business environment are covered in this book.

Thank you Meghraj for the wonderful explanation and clearing the myths.

This book is an excellent source of information for Oracle DBAs that work in an e-Business environment. I have read a number of books on e-Business and Oracle but this book does a superb job in showing what e-Business means to an Oracle DBA like me.
I especially liked the chapters on availability and security. Each page in those chapters contains very good stuff. In my company, high availability and security is a must and the techniques shown in the book are a lifesaver. e.g. encryption techniques, implementing redundancy, security loop holes and so on.

I have been an Oracle DBA for over 10 years now and am in the process of transitioning from a "traditional" DBA to an "internet" DBA. This book has helped me enormously in understanding the various issues and solutions related to using Oracle with the Web. Each chapter of the book is packed with valuable information. The author does a great job in explaining the issues involved in such projects and also provides real-world tips and techniques for achieving availability, scalability, security and performance in e-Businesses using Oracle. I highly recommend this book as a good read and ready reference for Oracle DBAs, Developers and even Project Managers of Web-based projects and e-Business initiatives that make use of Oracle

Eaglet's World is a wonderful book about both the hatching of an eaglet, and what it might feel like to "launch" out into the world. Children and adults can relate to this idea, as well as become informed about the birth to flight life of an eagle! Grand illustrations as well and memorable story.

"Eaglet's World" is written by Evelyn Minshull and illustrated by Andrea Gabriel. The book tells the story of a baby eagle--from his time inside the egg, to hatching, and to his first flight.

The lovely text has an appealing poetic rhythm. And it's superbly complemented by the joyous, beautiful illustrations. Overall, a children's book that effectively celebrates and educates about the beauty of nature.

Outspoken Ellison cuts loose, again

Anyone who has ever read Harlan Ellison knows he throws a lot of personnel information and views into his writing. This book is all that. In this collection of essays from the 70s, repackaged nicely, Ellison is angry, funny and sick at the same time. Reading these somewhat tall tales, I was taken back to the days of my childhood. Back to when one of my more crazy "uncles" used to tell me stories of his youth on hot summer days. Ellison is a better writer now than he was then, but the essays still hold up. They hold up even though references to Nixon and Lenny Bruce may leave some younger readers feeling a little unattached to the stories at times. I promise by the time you finish reading this one, you'll find it hard to forget some of the tales told by crazy Uncle Harlan.

One of the best Essayists ever...

My father had been a fan of Ellison's ever since I can remember and so I've always had his writing around. Alas, many of his books are out-of-print. I must have taken Harlan Ellison's Hornbook out of the library countless times, re-reading it cover to cover again and again. It's that good.

Most people, if they know of Ellison's work, know mostly of his short stories but this book collects essays he wrote in the 1970s about whatever struck his fancy... a great restaurant, some publisher who ripped him off once, the death of his beloved dog, a woman who double-crossed him, lamenting Lenny Bruce's death... Ellison writes with such authority and with such style--pithy yet degenerate is the best description I can think of. This book hums with intensity as the last greatest angry young man lets loose on all kinds of topics (to read his rant on why he hates Christmas is incredibly funny, even if you don't agree with his sentiments). This is one helluva read.

Even though I've read this book countless times, I keep coming back to it because Ellison's style of writing is endlessly entertaining and thought-provoking. It really gets under you skin and stays there.

Do yourself a favor and track down this book. It is definitely worth it.

Harlan Ellison has made quite a reputation for himself as an "angry man" of sorts, with his infamous attacks against amateurs in the numerous writing classes that he has taught, or his essays, which are collected herein. Some people claim that he has no emotions, and is unable to sympathize with so-called "normal" people because of this; but he is, in fact, the exact opposite, a man of such fierce emotion and opinion that he may come off as being caustic, or angry. Others claim that he has no "soft" side; if you believe this, read his essay, Ahbhu. These essays display his great intelligence, and tremendous "cultural warehouse of a mind," (The New York Times) and Ellison calls the shots as he sees them - by simply stating his opinion. In doing this, he has created a highly refreshing book, one that I highly recommend to anyone and everyone.

What a wonderful find this was.

I had never read any other works by this author but I bought the book because of the wonderful outline given by another reviewer and because I am a sucker for "spinster" stories.

What a wonderful find this book was for me. The characters are absolutely likeable, loveable and believable. Edwina is willing to run the risk of total shame and ruin if anyone finds out how she is earning the money necessary to keep her family clothed, housed and fed. At the time this story takes place her activity was indeed considered sinful, especially for a woman. The hero, Talmadge Jones, comes into the story in such a way that we can feel sympathy and empathy for him before we condemn him for the way he earns his living. These two must survive situations which are (at least for me) almost too over-the-top. Could she really have come from her sheltered background and endured all the physical hardships associated with their plight? Then I remind myself, this is fiction, anything is possible in fiction. I highly recommend this book. It is absorbing, tender, and sweet. It also shows a heroine who must take drastic action seldom depicted in the usual western historical novel.

Now for the bad news. This book is very poorly edited. It contains a large number of instances where I had to read, then re-read sentences and passages to correct them in my head in order to make the story make sense. I am greatly surprised that it was allowed to go into print like this. And that is too bad, it really did slow me down when I was reading and got very irritating at times.

Please don't reject the book because of the editing flaws. If you know about the problem going in, you can know it won't get better and make whatever mental adjustments you need to in order to enjoy this wonderful story. And it is just that, a wonderful story. I wish I could find more written by this author.

Edwina Parkhurst has a guilty secret, one that she has lied, contrived, and connived to keep hidden. Knowing full well that what she does is denounced as a terrible sin, preached against in pulpits, seen as Satan's handiwork by the God-fearing people in her world, and especially by the family she loves and has supported for years, Edwina continues her sinful ways. She has no choice if she is to keep a roof over her family's heads, food on the table, and garments suitable to their station.

Everything changes when she agrees to accompany her married sister to Oregon to rejoin her abusive husband, a trip that takes them through the wilds of Nevada's High Desert. A trip that has the sister and her daughters stolen by outlaws and strands Edwina in the desert winter. Dressed as a boy, driving a buggy destined for a 'calico queen,' and taking care of a man she thinks is an outlaw, she is hard put to keep on lying to Tal Jones, her captive, a blind gunfighter.

Wanting nothing more than to make enough money to go south where it's warm, Tal agreed to protect the freight wagons of whiskey, but he didn't expect to get shot in the head, lose his eye-sight, and wind up with a boy who was becoming more and more attractive every minute. And, of course, that isn't right.

And, of course, Edwina isn't a boy.

Pros:

This is one of the only two books available covering EIGRP in details. Most of other routing references do not have the same level on in-detail descriptions and protocol-specific information this book has. Add to that the smooth style of the authors which makes reading this book a pleasant experience

Cons:

May be EIGRP's code is not finalized yet and there are many enhancements added after this book is published. I think the authors need to issue a second edition with more information regard new features in the protocol. Although the book gives numerous examples of real life scenarios, It cames short of small pool of theoretical details " which are necessary if you run into *other* scenario rather than the ones listed. Finally, as many networks are migrating from IGRP to EIGRP, I think the authors should designate section for the migration process

For a book that weighs in at only 100 pages it seemed rather lightweight in comparison to other EIGRP/routing books I have read. But the quality of the content is very consise. The book is well paced and covers all aspects of EIGRP. From the mechanics of the protocol through to setup and network design decisions. The protocol troubleshooting sections are worth the price of the book in itself ( Far better than any others I have read) . And for the low price this is an excellent purchase.

Top Notch.

As a current student of Professor White's I may be a bit biased. Regardless of that, however, this book truly is excellent for the law student looking to grasp the employment and employment discrimination law fields, the practitioner looking to update his knowledge, or the layperson seeking to gain an understanding of two extremely important topics. There are tons of examples in every chapter to help you apply the concepts she teaches you as you read the book. It is very clearly written, and it simplifies and clarifies even the hardest of concepts.

This handbook is appropriate and valuable for everybody - from legal practitioners to college and law students to individuals wishing to understand more about the legal framework for employment in the United States. Everybody should read and review it for both general understanding and as a starting point for more focused study. This book is a jewel of a find!

I always disliked history until an excellent teacher made the people seem real and brought the past events to life in ways that allowed me to relate to them. This is what Richard Exley does in his book, "Encounters with Christ". The Bible stories that you have heard and read hundreds of times are viewed from a new perspective; one that is more heartfelt and open. I found myself reading this book through in one setting, then going back to read it again more slowly. There are little nuggets of gold that continue to jump out at me. This is a wonderful book and would be a meaningful gift for anyone who struggles to relate to the God of love.

Richard Exley's first-person accounts of these Bible characters are extremely creative. The reader is given great insight into what it must have been like to encounter Jesus Christ face to face. As I read this book, I was transported to the first century and experienced the emotions and feelings of these people, some of whom would have remained rather obscure because the Bible doesn't tell us much about them. But Encounters with Christ brings them to life in fascinating detail. I highly recommend this book.
