And there are only 3 ingredients needed! As a college student on a budget, I love the chance to make good food with little prep and not too much money invested. I wish theyd make many more!!! Also cookbooks with pictures of every recipe is my favorite!

Summers are short and precious here in Maine and any outdoor enthusiast, especially with kids in tow, knows that finding a loop hike for the whole family - one that can be done in single day - can be a challenge. This guide makes it easy to find that trail.

This book not only gives you the low down on the trails themselves, but the natural history, wildlife and geological insights that add dimension and interest to even the familiar trail.

Stuff this one in your backpack and leave the rest of the guides at home.

Great hiking book

"Best Loop Hikes" is a great resources for hikers of all levels. Many books have been written about hikes in Maine and New Hampshire, but I haven't read one before which focuses specifically on the White Mountains and the Maine Coast. I was pleasantly surprised when the book I pre-ordered from Amazon came in before the April 2006 published released date. The book will especially appeal to those who also enjoy wildlife: each hike describes local flora and fauna, with a particular emphasis on native birds. The author also plugs local land trusts, the conservation organizations that preserve local parcels of land, maintaining them so that hikers and others can enjoy their trails. There is also historical information provided for many of the surrounding areas. This is an excellent resource for both avid hikers and the more casual walker.

A New Day is Dawning

The Rev. Robert Pollard III, Palm Beach, FL, and Sugar Hill, NH

A NEW DAY IS DAWNING. Eugen Rosenstock-Huessy (ERH) has been called "the Galileo of the social sciences." I consider him the most significant human and Christian prophet of our time. His vision across many fields of human endeavor holds forth the promise of furthering the progress of the human sciences as Galileo enabled the natural sciences. Clinton Gardner's new book summarizes ERH's thinking and presents it in order to make it more accessible. Gardner then shows the similar thinking growing in many parts of the world, including the thought of Berdyaev and Bakhtin in Russia. ERH is not sufficiently recognized in our day, partly because he was far ahead of his time. Gardner's book is a very important step in making ERH's vision available. So this book is an important step toward bringing the human story into its next great age, an age of spirit (Spirit), an age of more humane institutions, of truer, freer, more loving humanity. I am now ordering four more copies of "Beyond Belief" to distribute. I recommend that you read it, and if it speaks to you (as I believe it will), give copies to the appropriate people.

This is an invaluable summary of history, sociology, and processes of dialog. Two of the most valuable parts are the Complete Cross of Reality--on one page!--and Clint Gardner's summaries of the major revolutions of the West.
Each revolution processed through 4 statges: Imperative, Subjective, Narrative, and Objective. And these are aspects of the Cross of Reality, and the Cross of Reality is the process of dialog.
The advantage for the reader is that when confronted with a situation, he or she can use the in-out-forward-back orientations to know where in space and when in time he or she is, and so can know better what to do.
A short review such as this cannot give justice to the usefulness of the work.
The work also has accounts of the places and times of the life of the author, and these show how the book came to be written over the decades.
Buy several to give away.

PS: I demur from agreeing with the panentheism, but as Rosenstock-Huessy himself said, the key to a university is to be a colleague, even though you do not agree--and first you shuld understand the other's position. Then you can disagree.

Beyond Belief Is A Facinating Journey Through Time and Space

Clint Gardner's Beyond Belief is a powerful, accessible and fascinating read. This book which is part memoir, part philosophical treatise, part theological revolution, takes the reader from a college classroom, to a bomb crater on a beach on D-Day, to meetings and conversations among amazing thinkers, leaders, and teachers from Russia, Germany, the U.S. and elsewhere. While calling attention to the tantalizing insights and theories of Gardner's college professor and life-long friend, Eugen Rosenstock-Huessy, it is also a moving story about how a student-teacher relationship can be sustained for a life-time, and even shape a life-time. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in considering a Christianity that is beyond any particular religious denomination. And, I recommend this book to anyone interested in challenges to philosophical materialism, or the biases that result from over-reliance on natural scientific methods as the only source of truth, especially for studying the non-material aspects of our experiences, i.e., politics, education, religion, history, psychology, and sociology. It is also an intriguing book for its references to and reporting of the relationships of some of the more influential thinkers of the 20th century, particularly if one is interested in the writings of people like Nikolai Berdyaev, Martin Buber, Franz Rosensweig, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, the Nazi resistance leaders, Helmut and Freya von Moltke. Congratulations to Mr. Gardner for completing one of his life-long dreams: publishing a book that brings his Dartmouth teacher's thought and passion to a broader audience.

I first borrowed this book from the library by title only in an on-line search. What a surprise! The authors have distilled a lot of important ideas and facts into simple sections, with pointers & critiques along the way. A veritible small wealth of information. While a pro might find this all rather second nature, an amateur will definitely find something of value in here, and a beginner will find the whole book very valuable.

This slim volume is a comprehensive guide packed with necessary information on black and white and landscape photography. The introduction to the book states, ". . . when photographing landscapes, you are at the mercy of these elements--quickly changing weather, changing and uneven illumination, poor contrast or limited tonal range, undesirable yet unchangeable foregrounds or backgrounds, and extraneous objects in the scene which may significantly detract from your composition." The challenge of creating a dynamic black and white landscape almost makes a photographer want to quit before beginning. Yet, with the help of this book, obtaining a spectacular black and white landscape seems to be within the realm of possibility. I like the book most because there is great detail in clear and understandable terms. Along with the text are more than seventy interpretive examples of black and white landscape photographs. The first section of the book discusses "The Artist's Tools." Everything from camera format to film and tripods are thoroughly addressed, including the benefits or drawbacks of various choices, prices and recommended accessories. Section two defines the art of landscape photography. Some questions answered are, "What is art?" "What makes a good landscape photograph?" and "Why black and White?" I found section 3 to be the most informative. Visual elements are explained in detail. Among some of the aspects covered are framing, vision, viewpoint, tonality and design. "Field Techniques" are explained in section four. The sometimes confusing effects of different colored filters on black and white images are explained with the help of charts and photographic examples. A condensed, but comprehensive explanation of the Zone System ends this section. The quotation, "The darkroom . . . allows you to create an image that exactly matches your artistic conception" introduces section five. This chapter takes us into the darkroom and beyond. Section six explains "Putting it all together," and section seven gives examples of field exposure, darkroom printing and Zone System field exposure records so we can repeat the perfect image every time. A list of recommended books for further reading is supplied as is a list of Internet resources. I found this book so helpful and comprehensive, I carry it with me into the field and find myself referring to it often. A definite five star addition to your library.

I have a lot of photography books. I shoot 35mm digital, 6x7 color film and 4x5 black and white. I was looking for a book that went into using the Zone System, but better than the classic Fred Picker book: The Zone VI Workshop, and with many more photo examples than the Chris Johnson book: The Practical Zone System. This is it! This is by far the best book I have found for explaining how to apply the Zone System to my methods of shooting. It is not just good at this either, as there are chapters on Composition and Darkroom as well. The book is a collection of beautiful work by Steve Mulligan and Steve is excellent at explaining his procedures. I highly recommend this book!

Steve Mulligan has published a couple of books on photography, however "The Practical Guide" is just that. It is written with a leaning toward large format work and nature photography, however the information is applicable to all film formats and types of photography. A beginner to photography would find this book helpful, but it will be most useful to someone who has some experience and wants to move away from "snapshots" and toward photography as fine art.

Mulligan's description of how to apply the Zone System to film exposure and film development is easy to understand and to apply. His description of the technique that he uses to print fine art photographs using a split-contrast printing is also well done. You should read this book if you are serious about Black and White photography as art.

Published in 2002, this is the most recent release in Sonia (Sunny) Seherr-Thoss's trilogy of essays. Here she finds her clearest voice and her most clearly articulated themes. They cover a multitude of subjects; they are thought-provoking, touching, and they are fun. Twenty readers would describe this book so differently, you'd wonder if they'd all read the same book. Here's my interpretation. There is a natural rhythm, momentum, diversity, and innate creativity which simultaneously unites and differentiates all life...and not Madison Avenue, nor governmental bureaucracies will ever harness life's essential energy. Mankind in aggregate must bring its sights to bear on the targets of highest value, mutual respect for one another, and for the Earth which we all call home. My favorite chapter is the one titled "Villages." The author describes nine of them, poetically listing their virtues, and concluding that they are nothing less than "sanctuaries of culture." My favorite image is of Count Frontenac "stomp-dancing with the sweating warriors." I told you this would be fun.

I bought this book for a paper I was writing in college about the Tuskegee Airmen. This book was great, I read it cover to cover in one sitting. While its not packed with the information other books are, it does include stories from white and African American air and service men. Its also facinating to compare the treatment of men of different races during the war. There is a story behind it that is quite interesting as well considering what a large war it was. I highly recomend this book. If your reading this I ask somthing of you, thank a veteran or service person for what they have done or are doning to protect your rights and freedoms.

Fun Fact: If you want to get the attention of a class of sixth graders, tell `em about a book where a guy blew a metal rod through the top of his skull and lived. That'll wake the little buggers up! Yes, when it comes
to booktalking a work of non-fiction to kids, I've relied on John Fleischman and his book, Phineas Gage: A Gruesome but True Story About Brain Science for years. Insofar as I could ever tell, this was Fleischman's one and only contribution to the world of children's literature, and it was a doozy. Science is rarely so simultaneously gory and well-written. I suppose I had the feeling that maybe Fleischman was some kind of one hit wonder. I mean, he spends most of his time writing scientific articles for journals like Muse and Harvard Health Letter. He also writes for Air & Space Smithsonian, which, had I but known, would have made his latest book a little less left-fieldish for me. "Black and White Airmen: Their True History" is exactly what you want out of your historical non-fiction for kids. It strikes just the right balance of personal stories, historical clarifications, and exciting air battles.

They grew up in the same town, were in the same third grade class, and fought practically side-by-side in the same air battles, but John Leahr and Herb Heilbrun didn't know one another until the year 1997. At that time, Herb read in the paper that the mayor of Cincinnati would be presenting a public award to some Tuskegee pilots not too far away. So Herb crashed the reception. He wanted to thank the guys who'd covered his tail during multiple escort missions and in doing so he met John. Herb and John became fast friends, finding that they had more in common than they had ever expected. Through their eyes, Fleischman tells the story of Fifteenth Air Force and the Tuskegee airmen. He draws attention to racial lines and divides at that time then brings you face-to-face with what it meant to fly an airplane during the Great War. The author is adept at making this a very personal story at one moment and a look at history the next without ever straining his narrative or cutting too quickly. It makes for a startlingly good story.

For kids, the notion that your grandparents and great-grandparents were ever children can be baffling. Baffling and more than a little inconceivable. You might concede that they were capable of fighting in a massive war more than 60 years ago, but that they were ever kids running about reading comic books? Go pull the other one. So some of the best parts of this book come when you see contemporary John and Herb going to classrooms and showing classes a picture of the two of them in third grade. That was part of what I really liked about this title. You see enough of our two heroes as kids to give them some depth and history, but not so much that you get bored waiting for the action to start.

Now a book of this sort becomes a very delicate balancing act early in the game. On the one hand, Fleischman must have known how important it was to give history and context to racism in America during the Second World War. Tying this into John's story is easy enough, considering some of the challenges he faced. But when you write a book about a black pilot and white pilot, the temptation is going to be to sort of ignore the white pilot's tale in favor of the more exciting black pilot's narrative. Fleischman does a good job of evening out the storyline without padding it out or filling it with unnecessary information. Even as you find yourself on Herb's side, you can't help but notice how unfair John's life was in comparison. A kid's temptation would be to blame Herb for his race's stupidities, but Fleischman never allows that to happen. In a way, this book felt like a slightly more fleshed out version of Freedom Riders: John Lewis and Jim Zwerg on the Front Lines of the Civil Rights Movement, which paired the stories of a black and a white civil rights activist and their shared experiences in participating in the 1961 Freedom Rides. Yet I found this title superior in terms of showing the ties between the lead characters while really pulling you into their story. Both are great books, but this one felt a little slicker in the delivery.

The portions dealing with racism in America are just great. There are sentences like, "the color line in Cincinnati was invisible in law but razor sharp in daily life." And darned if the author doesn't actually make me interested in airplane and air battles. Admittedly my own grandfather was a pilot in WWII, but I'd never thought to research what he would have gone through in the air. Fleischman includes all sorts of interesting mentions. Planes needed an overhaul if they had five hundred hours "on the clock" (i.e. in the air). You may not think much of that fact when you first hear about it, but when Herb is later given a plane with 521 hours on it, you know he's in for trouble. And exciting? You betcha. There's one moment where Herb tears every single muscle in his upper back just by wrestling his B-17 into formation and then he has to continue to fly it alone through a five-hour mission because his co-pilot was paralyzed by fear and almost killed the entire crew... whew!

A co-worker of mine pointed out that for some kids, certain sections are going to grab their attention more than others. There are definitely child readers out there for whom air battles and combat via planes is going to be the primary focus of their interest with this book. Other kids will want to know about the Tuskegee airmen, and maybe only look at the book from that perspective. Still others might need to find WWII biographies, and this title certainly has two. I like to think that it's the personal stories that will allow some kids to read this book cover to cover, growing close to the real life characters. When Herb finds out that his best friend during the war that he thought was dead turns out, fifty years later, to be alive and living in Minnesota, THAT is amazing and makes for a great read.

Abundant photographs pepper the pages of this book, keeping the eye moving without ever distracting. Fleischman has eschewed the use of pullout boxes or entire pages dedicated to a related topic that pull away from the narrative. This is a smart choice on his part. And while I rarely see authors of non-fiction children's titles justify their lack of source notes, Fleischman is careful to point out that, "I leave source notes to scholars who write about History." Aside from the first-person interviews Fleischman conducted to get much of his information, there is also a nice list of Resources for kids under topics like "For the Tuskegees", "For the air war in general", "For the air war at the movies", etc. An Index is included in the back.

One of the very first things Fleischman says of this true story is, "We have all sorts of `true' stories today that aren't entirely true... True books like this one are usually called `nonfiction,' which is a funny word. All it guarantees is that this book is `not fiction,' that is, that I didn't make it up entirely. Imagine if food were labeled that way; imagine that the ingredients listed on an ice cream wrapper said only `Not stones.'". Be that as it may be, I'll take Fleischman's "not stones" over that of his contemporaries any day of the week. "Black and White Airmen" mixes different kinds of history topics alongside personal recollections with flair. The result is a book I'll be handing to any kid doing a WWII assignment or just wanting to know more about some of the great men who served so long ago.

Two boys from Miss Pitchell's third grade class in 1928 Cincinatti, Ohio grew up to be World War II pilots. John Leahr was one of the famed "Tuskegee Airmen", African-American pilots who flew for the United States even as they were being systematically oppressed. Herb Heilbrun flew bombers over Europe completing 35 successful missions. The parallel stories of these two men are told in BLACK AND WHITE AIRMEN: THEIR TRUE HISTORY.

Full of photographs and primary sources, this book is a fascinating look at the different wartime experiences of military men in the segregated armed services. Leahr and Heilbrun became friends later in life and currently speak to students about their experiences. Fleischman details their childhoods, education, service records and their lives after the war. The narrative is exciting with many details that will keep any reader with the slightest interest in flying, history or wartime interested.

"A Black and White Case" provides a comprehensive history of affirmative action of value to anyone interested in race in America. As the subtitle ("How Affirmative Action Survived its Greatest legal Challenge") suggests, Stohr tends to favor the proponents of affirmative action. At the same time, however, he shows sympathy and insight into its opponents. For example, Stohr's portrait of Carl Cohen -- the Michigan philosophy professor who first unearthed Michigan's statistics on affirmative action -- reveals that the intellectuals behind the recent challenges come from backgrounds far from the mainstream of the conservative movement.

Stohr also presents an account of the Supreme Court that in many ways outshines that of Bob Woodward's and Carl Bernstein's in The Brethren. In contrast to Woodward and Bernstein, Stohr lacks Woodward and Bernstein's instinctive hostility to the Court's right wing.

Finally, Stohr does an admirable job tying together chacters and events covering a broad scope of time and space into a book with suprisingly strong narrative force. Shelby Foote once said that in writing, plot is the last thing that a writer masters, if he masters it at all. Stohr succeeds in this important respect.

This is an excellent book.

Whether or not we choose to acknowledge it, every student who has entered an American university over the past 50 years is a product of the affirmative action and diversity policies of our nation's education system. The U. of Michigan case that is the heart of "A Black and White Case" is a landmark ruling that impacts the admission policy of every U.S. university. The issues described in this book are extremely important to each of us as citizens. Everyone interested in the American higher education system sould read this book.

Greg Stohr provides an incredibly balanced account of the highly charged issue of race-based admissions policies. Mr. Stohr also does an excellent job of taking very complicated legal facts and analysis and turning them into a fast-moving story that non-legal scholars can follow and understand. This is the most important legal book I have read in several years. It is also a terrific read. I highly recommend this new author.

Stohr's book reminded me of an old television program hosted by Walter Cronkite. It reenacted significant events in history and he always ended it by saying, "You were there." I felt as though I had been behind the scenes as those involved with the two affirmative action cases worked for victory. Stohr explains the legal terms clearly without being condescending. He delves into the personalities and the politics which determine the outcomes. I especially enjoyed his coverage of the Supreme Court. Stohr is an excellent, fair minded reporter.

When I treated myself to a Nikon N80 for my birthday this year, I knew that black and white photography was where I wanted to focus. Black and White Shots is an invaluable source for me for staging as well as lighting for black and white photography. I was able to look at pictures that caught my eye and read both description and a diagram of how the photographer put the shot together. Film type, f/stops, lighting types, positioning and notes about the shoot -- this book had it ALL!!! It told me the basics and allowed me to add my own creative touch to a photo session. Definitely a reference KEEPER!

This book is a breath of fresh air for anyone looking to succeed in life. E. LeMay offers no excuses for being born to an impoverished family. He shows how a little education and a lot of hard work can help anyone of any shape, size, disability, handicap or color succeed. E. LeMay refused to be stereotyped and shows how he succeeded because of his merits, not the color of his skin. E. LeMay is an inspiration to his peers and a positive role model for our next generation.

You may not like what Mr. Lathan says and you may not like how he says it but if you want to succeed in corporate America you should get this book and study it. Mr. Lathan tells the truth that black men and black women need to hear about working, setting goals, and making it. I've purchased several copies and gave one to every teenager in my family.

Very enlighening effort showing what Blacks face.

I enjoyed the ideas put forth to help his son deal with life. I took a lot of courage to put thoughts out there like these. I would like to think this book has helped me think about changing the way I look at people of all colors. It has put me on guard as to how I treat others and the attitude I portray. I will have my kids read it and then make sure they understand it. It will be a book I will pass onto my family and friends whenever possible.
