Older Folk Need To Read This, Too...

Mr. Bonham offers an exciting glimpse into the world of an inquisitive adolescent, one of the many among us with both a soul and a brain. Daily, we risk taking too lightly these young people's decency and lack of thug-ness. I suspect that the author was as conscious and aware as MacKenzie, the witty and engaging protagonist, during his own teen years. Of particular interest is the almost off-handed way in which the young MacKenzie encounters and copes with 'multiculturalism.' This young man, and his circle of friends in San Antonio, casually perceives diversity to be the cultural norm - as is increasingly the case in those parts of the United States that have actually entered the 21st century. This is a good read, one that invites - and challenges - older readers to viscerally recall the psychic and emotional discoveries of their youth.

I decided to read this book to see how the author would develop such an interesting/unique plot. After reading the book, I have to say I was completely satisfied with the book. I enjoyed that it was written for a younger teenage audience, but that they dealt with real life problems and had to make important decisions. While the characters are developing their own identities, they are also uniting as a strong group of peers, to overcome the different issues which come about. I would suggest this book for readers who are ready to take a journey and learn the importance of friends and family. Remember, family isn't necessarily those who are related by blood, and the author doesn't an excellent job of proving this.

I agree with the other reviewer, this is a great family friendly book. We read this book as a family and we had some great discussions about morality and choices. The world today is far from perfect and neither are the people in this book. This is a clear eyed representation of life as a teenager in a less than ideal world and blended family.

This is a true coming of age story. My family and I can't wait to see who the main character is talking to at the end of the book. Definitely a must read for anyone with preteen kids or anyone who was ever a kid.

Not Your Average White Boy....a coming of age story with flava!

A family-friendly book!!!!! Positve portrayals of characters of color!!!!!
I'm so impressed that someone finally created a book that features characters of color (Black and Hispanic) that aren't gang-banging, gun-toting, pot-smoking, whorish, stereotype-driven caricatures of what we see in the media way too often. If you want to read a teenage novel that's KEEPING IT REAL, but not "Harry Potter" (albeit well written and riveting-- Harry's just not everyone's flava)- this is my pick. There are so many teen novels out there, but so few with characters that MY kids can identify with- being a parent of two adolescents. As a Black parent, portrayal is important to me. Don't get me wrong, I love a good young adult fiction story (that speaks to "every-teen") as much as the next reader, but you can only read so many chick-flick type novels about "White-girl #4" that speak to the teen experience. But at the same time, when we go ethnic, it doesn't have to be "Boyz in the Hood". Ghetto should be used as a spice, not a flava. Title character, MacKenzie is just NOT your average White-Boy.
The unique thing about MacKenzie's story is that it also features the thing missing in most teenage novels, multi-dimensional characters of color. The author poignantly showcases men of color that are good role-models to the children they're raising, "an' look Ma'"-- spiritual values and morals, addressed in the backdrop of adolescence. Even in literature, it's good to see parents present and taking a stand in the moral development of their children (can we get some more of those in real-life?). The narrator takes us on quite a journey, as he matures and we get a look at his extended, sometimes colorful, and whacky family tree. Although called a "Wigga", by his peers, Kenz has to decide if he's "Acting Black", or really just being himself.
As we get the backstory of his past, Kenz has to tackle experiences in everything from sports, girls, popularity/ appearances, and fighting to spirituality, and ethnic-identity issues for the kid that's growing up in a both blended and multi-ethnic family. Through the characters, we see accuracy in cultural generalisms, but not the stereotypes pushed upon us (Black Folk) by the media. If you're looking for something different, this is the ticket. I can't wait to see if the author goes for a sequel, I want more of MacKenzie, friends, and family. If you're looking for something different, try this one on for size, you won't regret it. Who knows, you might just learn something from this teenage kid, about life "...in Black and White".

Guess Who's Coming, Jesse Bear is the latest of the Jesse Bear series, a charming set of soft-cover picturebooks about young Jesse Bear, his family, and his friends. In Guess Who's Coming, Jesse Bear, the young ursine shares a delightful week-long visit from his cousin, with outdoor excursions, playtime and happy memories. Darrin isn't afraid to tell it like it is in this book. You want honesty, he gives it to you. Written by an obviously open minded person, he gives you life experiences of his own and of his peers. There are stereo-types from white women, black women and black men, some of which wouldn't normally been said. Like I said, he gives it to you straight.

A lot of writers dance around this issue. This book gives insight on how a lot of people feel and why they feel the way that they do. Black men and women have issues with one another as well as conflict, however this books shows both men and women that they need to work on HEALING the rift between them. This book also EMBRACES interracial relationships and prepares the reader for the TRUTH which is that we are headed toward an integrated society. This book is progressive as well as hard core. The kid gloves are off when it comes to racism, the author explains that we are all in search of the same thing which is happiness. He explains throughout that racism is a tool to keep everyone divided and distracted from the true problem in the country which is economics. I think after reading this and hearing what the author says, the healing can begin. This book was on point!

This book challenged a lot of stereotypes and makes the reader think candidly about inter-racial relationships. It's a bold, provocative and a brave attempt by an African American Male. The book shows us that although we have come a long way regarding interracial relationships, we still have a long way to go. I like the fact that the author says that, love is already hard to come by, why compound things with issues of race. It also points out that race is not the true problem in this country, but economics. The author promotes healing between black men and women, but at the same time, encourages people to RESPECT the choices that others make in relationships. This is the first book on this topic that I have read that actually talks about respecting inter-racial relationships. It also explains that at times, these relationship are harder to maintain because of societal pressures. It's a little rough in some areas, but the book is well balanced.

This book shows people how silly prejudice is as well as all the sides of the coin regarding interracial dating. This book has a lot of straightforward truths about the topic of interracial dating and is a must read. It is controversial, entertaining and informative. There are some strong opinions from black women, white women and black men in here that I have never seen in a book before. Some of the persons interviewed are very frank and sometimes harsh in their opinions, but the author does a good job of critiquing these views and playing devil's advocate. The book PROMOTES interracial dating and reminds us all that we are moving toward a more integrated society and for people with issues to simply, "Get with the program."

Hands-On Archaeology Explore The Mysteries Of History Through Science by archaeologist and educator John White is specifically and effectively designed to be an archaeological manual for the classroom teacher in preparing and implementing a curriculum to teach students about various aspects of archaeological inquiry through a wealth of "hands on" activities, worksheets, readings, and examples. Every facet of the science of archaeology is covered from the formulation of a working hypothesis , to the keeping of field notes and records, to creating a museum display. The fascinating consequence of John White's highly recommended Hands-On Archaeology is that the students will not only learn about the science of archaeology, but in the process they will become functioning archaeologists themselves!

What a great learning tool to use in your classroom!

This story provides a way for children and parents alike to put in simple terms the complex feelings which arise with chronic illnesses and disorders. For children too young to discuss their feelings, this book voices the fears they cannot express with words. I like this book, in that it paints Hollowfaust as a place of learning for Necromancers. Most people would think that this place is a place of evil, but it actually is not. I even used the material after I got the book in my Scarred Lands campaign that I am DMing and my players loved it. I recomend this book to anyone who is running a Scarred Lands campaign or who is interested in playing in the Scarred Lands campaign.

Hollowfaust is a great campaign setting. The city of Necromancers can be filled with danger and intrigue. You can also just drop it into your current campaign without an extensive rewrite. My only problem with it is that the NPC stats arent always handy to where they are listed in the text. They are in the same chapter usually within a page or two. For example: It is annoying when your reading about a temple and high priest and then have to go looking for that priest stats elsewhere. The setting is a 5 The layout is a 4. The quality of the material is a 5. So if you dont mind a minor problem with the layout this is a very high priority purchase. Not only for the Scarred Lands setting, but for any campaign.

Outstanding source book

Review Date: 2002-01-15
I've read most of the SSS sourcebooks, and in my opinion this is - BY FAR - the best DD3E product they have released. I do not use the Scarred Land campaign world myself, but I do plan on integrating this into my campaign world immediately.

Hollowfaust continues the dark theme of the Scarred Lands campaign world, but flips the stereotype of the evil Necromancer on its ear, and turns what could be a very predictable city into a unique supplement. The idea of Necromancers as somewhat benign scholars is as intriguing as it is bizarre, as are all of the attendent situations, such as undead acting as both unskilled labor and the city "protectors".

The treatment of the city, its history, adventure hooks and resident personages is detailed enough to make the city playable, but not so detailed as to overwhelm or restrict.

The prestige classes are a useful continuation to those provided in Relics and Rituals and Tome of Blood, and can provide depth to a campaign world, although for the most part I would not use them as PC classes.

All in all, I enjoyed the City of Necromancers immensely and think that anyone could use this in their world with a minimum of hassle and maximum results.

Unusual and Intriguing Setting

Review Date: 2002-02-04
This is a really interesting setting that is intended for the Scarred Lands setting by SSS but it fit easily into my campaign and will provide an interesting twist as far as settings go. The city is a refuge and center of learning for Seven Guilds of Necromancers, yet it is a thriving city as well. That is what makes it so intriguing. The citizens are governed by the Guilds and undead help to keep the city safe. There are endless possibilities for adventure and mysterious intrigue for any campaign. The "normal" city and its interesting spots and locales are given plenty of space but the meat of the sourcebook comes from the description of the necromancers and their part in the city's history and government. The city and its environs are well detailed and there are several new spells, creatures and prestige classes that are suited for the setting that can be added to your campaign. The seven necromantic guilds and their beliefs (as well as their leaders) are profiled as well. There are several adventure hooks provided also. It is a well written supplement that will put a twist on almost any campaign that you set it in.

Excellent translation in between NASB and NIV
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2005-02-20
I recently bought the HCSB and I am delighted with the translation. It is more literal than the NIV (New International Version) and more accurate, and yet it is more readable than the NASB (New American Standard). I liked this translation also because it is based on the Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia 5th edition (Hebrew OT) and the United Bible Societies' Greek New Testament 4th edition (Greek NT). The 100 scholars who translated this version are evangelical scholars who obviously have a high regard for Scripture and hold to the inerrancy of Scripture. I liked how the HCSB translated certain passages. I am relieved that translations of passages such of Dan. 7:13 are not so gender inclusive that it missed out on the whole Messianic reference (HCSB "One like a Son of Man" not like NRSV "one like a human being"). Another notable translation is Phil. 2: 6 ("did not regard equality with God as something to take advantage of"). I also liked how it translated 1 John 2:2 ("propitiation" instead of "expiation" for reference to Christ's atonement). A curious note in the O.T. is that sometimes the translators translate God's name as Yahweh and most other times it leaves it as LORD and GOD in capitals (e.g. Ps. 81:10; Ps. 83: 18).

This is the most cost effective edition of this translation (the Gift & Award Bible) since it costs only $5, which is much less expensive than comparative Gift & Award equivalents for the NIV and NASB. I have purchased many of these Gift and Award HCSBs to give out to friends -- it is even less expensive than some New Testament versions. This Gift & Award edition is much less expensive than the red-letter text edition of the HCSB. If you want to purchase a less expensive edition of the HCSB just to read it and try it out, the Gift & Award is the way to go.

I highly recommend this translation! It is a worthy addition to the plethora of Bible translations out there. I would also highly recommend the English Standard Version as well (which is more expensive than the HCSB). If you like a low-cost Bible which is accurate and readable, try out the HCSB! Like the English Standard Version, it is a nice cross between the NIV and NASB.

Unique Word Of God Bible

This HCB is a unique, essentially literal translation. The rendering is almost the same as the ESV/NASB. This particular one is a smaller size and of imitation leather, with paperback pages.

The outstanding features are the Red Letter Edition to Christ's words, as well as the lay out of important quotations from the Old Testament etc. The early Church hymn of Philippians 2 is also presented in a stanza form, as are many other helpful tidbits. Therein the wording helpfully reads: 'the emptying of Christ..' The maps are in color and their is a helpful addition of theologia at the back: an abbreviated dictionary, concordance and other study helps.

'Whatever He tears down cannot be rebuilt,
whoever He imprisons cannot be released.' Job 12:14

The rendering of He and His favorably appears with a capital H !
I have one mainly for the translation benefit is brings, as it is
clear and true to the original text.

Definitely worth checking out!

First, it goes without saying this is an excellent value. It provides a great opportunity to check out this new translation.

The HCSB is one of only two new translations that I like (the other being the ESV). The only thing I don't like is its tendency to be a little too conversational at times.

On the other hand, the translators seem to place a high priority on accuracy (my one problem with the NIV, at times).

Bottom line: get a copy of the ESV and a copy of the HCSB and you'll have two great alternatives to the NIV (for those times when you want a change of pace).

Very good Bible for the price

From what I have read so far, the HCSB seems to be a good translation. I would recommend it for someone looking for the accuracy of the NASB, but readability of the NIV.

This particular book is basically a paperback Bible with an imitation leather cover. The pages are made of the same paper as paperback books. This is the only paperback Bible I've ever seen with red-lettering. Just like other paperback Bibles, there is no book marker.

This would be a great Bible for a new Christian, for a confirmation or Sunday School gift, for a "first" Bible, for handing out to evangelize, or to just check out the HCSB translation (like what I'm doing with it). It isn't as nice as more expensive Bibles, however, considering that it only costs $5, it is a very nice Bible for the money.

While you may not choose to use his advice on what type of trap to use, this book has all you need to know to start catching crabs. I have a friend who uses a ring as he's more interested in the "fishing" than the "catching."

The one bit he didn't mention, is that losing that expensive SS trap is a killer for crabs. In Washington you must secure the hatch with bio-degrable string so that if you do lose the trap it will stop fishing. Otherwise the dead crabs self bait the trap and the cycle continues for 10 year or more until the trap fully rusts out. Check out the Fish & game pages for Texas and Alabama where during closed seasons they removed over 2,000 lost traps each.

Also Charlie left out my favorite crab "catching" technique which is to put a fish head on a line and toss it out. Wait for the line to "walk" and then slowly pull it in. Near the surface net the crab! Well that's the way it was supposed to work, and it sort of does, well it did for Carolina blue claw crabs. And its great fun for the kids.

Anyway another great book by Charlie.

I make commercial crab traps for a living and this book has it all. When I mention this book to commercial crabbers most already know, they own the book! This book even talks about a ropes 'scope' when you put a trap in the water. A rookie commercial crabber I knew didn't clue into this fact and 'deadheaded' a string of thirty traps! Why a trap should be round is explained. Why a traps entrances should be lined up to the current is explained. It took my father ten years of commercial crabbing before he figured those things out! What bait gets the big males dungeness is covered, and it's absolutely correct. I can tell Charlie spent a lot of time talking to commercial crabbers to write this book. A great deal!

It is advisable even for those who are veterans to the sport and wish to increase their chances of harvesting a deer. A definite recomended reading for deer hunters.

This is the third book from the Hunting and Fishing Library that I have read and this one was as good as the others. As a begining deer hunter this book was invaluable but an experienced hunter could benefit also. It has sections on habitat, senses, guns, and equipment. It also has great sections on tactics and even a step by step photo guide on field dressing. One thing you should expect from this series of books is great pictures and this book is no exception. If you want to hunt deer, buy this book.

I laughed so hard the first time I read this book to my girls that they actually got worried. This book rings true for just about anyone living in the South, especially those with ties to the farming life. We checked it out from the library originally, but have bought 4 copies so far. A must read!

Reader engagement makes this an enjoyable experience.

This book is a delightful story, lending itself to read-aloud with Kentucky country dialect and a repeated story pattern. Lower elementary readers (K-2) are likely to miss the essence of the story and be disappointed in the ending, which reuires a degree of maturity and abstract thinking to appreciate. The most significant events in the story are those that take place in the reader's imagination. While the menfolk, who are repeatedly outwitted by the elusive white cow, place their quarry on a higher ahd higher pedestal, the reader is clued in to the cow's antics by the detail in the text and pictures, and by the background comments Mama makes. This book elicits so much engagement on the part of the reader that it can't help but be enjoyed!

Enjoyable for all ages, with more to discover each time read

There is much to like about this book, whatever the age of the person reading (or being read to). The story is wonderful and wonderfully told, with a very distinctive voice that makes it fun to read over and over and over and over. The detailed pictures are beautiful, and each reading can reveal new details, especially in the smaller 'frames' at the bottom of the pages, which tell more of the story. And if you see a real white cow in your travels, be prepared to discuss where that wayward cow might have come from.

A story that holds the attention of both parent and child.

Hunting the White Cow is a favorite book at our house. It is one of the few books that even mom wants to read again, as soon as it is over. The reading level is designed for a school-aged child, but my 2 year old will sit captivated through the entire story. We read a lot of picture books, but it is rare that a picture book has such a thoughtful and well developed story. The pictures are beautiful and help to illustrate some of the quaint references for our suburban children, who might not recognize a tobacco plant or a "saw brier" if they saw it. I can tell already that some day when my boy is grown, he will come across this book, maybe with his own children, and he will say, I loved this stroy when I was child.
