Anyone interested in the history of surfing will be thrilled to look at this assortment of great shots. All are sepia toned, and don't expect crisp, high resolution reproductions here. What counts is the subject matter, and that's all here in spades. We got the Duke, Tom Blake, interestng beach goings-on at San Onofre circa the '40's, Billy Hamilton, Greg Noll and others. The price is a little stiff, but all are suitable for framing and, looking at it that way, what you are really purchasing is art. If you like surfing, you'll get a kick out of these.

Although it was hard to part with [money] for a portfolio of pictures, this is really a bargain. Everyone of the pictures is breathtaking. Added to the fact that it's a limited edition...

If you like surfing, or even classic American photography, this is for you.

I was blown away. These are some of surfings most famous images all in one collection. Beautifuly printed with a warm sepia tone. There are 15 11x14 inch black and white prints in the collection. All the prints are loose-not bound-great for framing. Steve Pezman from the Surfer's Journal wrote a wonderful introduction as well.

I have been seriously collecting only a few months now and have decided to sell. This book is well organized and the best of 3 reference books on flow blue that I have. The hard cover is a good idea since I think I would wear it down to stubs if it had been a paperback!!

If you collect, are interested in collecting, or want to identify and value flow blue items, this book is a must. You can look up items by pattern, which are cross-referenced to the manufacturers' names. The book is full of color photographs of makers' marks as well as examples of hundreds of patterns on various types of pieces. The back of the book contains values for the photographed pieces. Another helpful feature is the section on reproductions. This is a great reference book.

This book along with the entire series of Flow Blue books by Mary Frank Gaston are vital in Flow Blue identification and history. This book is brimming with photos and identification marks, along with manufacturing dates and makers. There is also a section on 'fakes' and how to look for and avoid them.
Each book has different photos of the many patterns and shapes Flow Blue comes in. I highly recommend owning a copy of each of Ms. Gaston's books if you are a true Flow Blue collector. You will enjoy these books for years to come. They are well made with high quality color and material.
Enjoy!

This is an essential guide for collectors of flow blue china. It features over 400 pieces photographed in color and described in detail.

For identification purposes, all of the manufacturers' marks on these pieces are shown in enlarged b/w photos. There are also cross-references for manufacturers and their patterns and types of objects other than plates.

For the collector, there is a history of flow blue, information on collecting methods, a glossary, and market trends including modern reproductions to watch out for. A current value guide is also provided for all the items illustrated.

The photography is excellent. Captions for each item include maker & pattern, size and reference to the photo of the mark. This will be a great reference for the beginning or advanced collector of this beautiful style.

The old Comiskey Park was the first place I saw a baseball game. It is still my ideal place to see a baseball game. Because I collect any reading material I find on the old ballpark, I seized the opprtunity to buy this book when I saw it in a bookstore. The photography of this book, while far to brief, is spectacular. The one misfortune is that all the pictures are in black and white. One of the interesting things is to watch the evolution of the Dan Ryan Expressway next to Comiskey Park as the ballpark ages.

True White Sox fans will note the error printed in this book involving a White Sox homerun hitter. Irregardless, Sox fans will enjoy this gem.

I've read all of Ms. Stahls adult books and liked them for their creativity but frankly some were very poorly written. This one is the best of her books, very rich and unique. She develops the characters very well and there are so many secondary charaters that add to the overall storyline. It is about a girl that is indentured to a cruel Uncle but it is very UNpredictable. If you just like an interesting book (and a nice romance) don't miss this one!

This book really surprised me because, quite frankly, I didn't expect it to be that good. I figured I'd just spend a day or two keeping my mind occupied,I didn't think that the book would be so good the I wouldn't be able to put it down. Stahl paints a colorful picture for her readers equipped with just enough detail to make her story interesting without it being over the top. If you ever find yourself with a full evening and nothing to do, pick up The Covenant and see how far you get before you angrily find that you are too exhausted to read another word.

A fresh look at prayer

Review Date: 1998-08-24
Much of the current attitude about prayer left me confused and discouraged, leading me to believe that prayer changes God and that I simply need to "pray harder" if I'm struggling. Mr. White's book, however, by looking at prayers recorded in the Bible, reaffirmed that our prayers are an important response to an unchanging God. Rather than taking a flippant view of the struggles behind some of these great prayers, he addressed them honestly and in context with other Scripture. Of course, it is good to have a clear understanding of prayer, but this book has played a role in my walk which has been even more important: it has encouraged me to pray more and more.

Different Point of View on Prayer

Many books have been written concerning prayer, but this particular book does not deal with how to pray but deals with the consequences, or results, of those who took to heart praying to the Almighty God. As a result, they got their answers. This book helped look at prayer from a different angle. I am reading it again for the second time. That's how good the book really is. I highly recommend it.

I found it hard to make it through the first part of the book but after. I got to Hannah's prayer, a light clicked on. Daring To Draw Near helped me look at prayer differently. God is not a distant puppet master ignoring your prayers, but is a very real and present God, longing to hear from you.

This is, without question, the best book on prayer I have ever read. It has dramatically altered the way I pray, both in terms of what things I pray about, and what I expect from God during the exchange. John White is a masterful writer who does not shy away from pointing out what our personal weaknesses might be in our prayer lives. He speaks truth boldy. While reading this book I often felt convicted and saw the need for a transformation of how I pray. Daring to Draw Near will show how our prayers should be more God-centered than they probably are, and that they should be more focused on prayers for "our people" and our community. We are challenged to be honest in our prayers about who God really is and about who we are and what we think. If you read this book, your prayer life (and the rest of your life) will never be the same.

For some reason ive never really liked this clan maybe i just didnt understand them well enough to be interested in playing one but having read this book makes me more inclinced to do so in the future. At first i found the book a little dull but soon, with the introduction of Sir Hugh the Ventrue with True Faith things soon hotted up. I felt that this book was an excellent clan novel with very interesting themes, Christanity against Muslim, East against West...but i felt that the assamite characters where over shadowed by the Presence of Sir Hugh and that it wasnt so much as a Assamite novel, but more of a Ventrue one. My original statement is still true but after the indepth development of the character of Sir Hugh im more inclinded to want to play more Ventrue.

I thoroughly enjoyed this particular novel very much. It deals with three sects of the Assamite clan who call themselves Children of Haqim. I was amazed at how he put one of each of the sects together. I have always thought that the children of Haqim were more than the stereotypical assassin. Initially there is some conflict between their different points of view. How Stefan works it out is simply amazing. He even introduces a character with True Faith and how it affects the kindred around him. I liked how Sir Hugh, a kindred himself has a very strong sense of faith. All in all I will have to say that Stefan Petrucha is a master storyteller!

It never fails that, just when I think a Masquersade series is going to be all data and little play, along comes a book that surprises me with both a high level of action (for a World of Darkness book) and a well written and novel story line. Assamite is a notch above the norm on several accounts - far enough so that the book can pretty well stand on its own.

The Assamite in the center is called Amala, on of the deadly assassins who lair at Alumet. These vampires have strong ties with the Muslim faith and thus are the natural enemies of the Crusade. Amala, her companion Sihr Haddad, and Fajr, an itinerant of Amala's clan join to spy on the recent events at Constantinople and take whatever action will protect the faithful. You will also encounter the redoubtable Fatima al-Faqadi, who was th main character of the the previous Assamite volume in the first clan series.

This story could have also been titled Ventrue, after the clan of the vampire Knight Templar who draws Amala's attention and even manages to penetrate her discipline far enough to bring her to the edge of faltering. Sir Hugh of Clairvaux is of precisely the opposite disposition of faith than Amala. Not only is he deeply religious, but an encounter under Constantinople with a Lamia has left him convinced he is privy to Mary's own confidences. He has been inspired to take the Crusade to Egypt, which was the original target.

The relationshi between these two throws both into a crisis of faith as Amala finds Hugh quoting the Quran in his sleep, and Amala's pose as a simple vampire maid proves overwhelmingly attractive to Hugh. This creates tensions among both their followers, and the resulting novel is both complex and rich in character development. Expect more than a few surprising developments as well.

We have had two novels in a row that turn on religious issues in a time when spiritual belief was far more important to vampire society and the Masquerade was still a twinkling in the eyes of the clans. I hope the story develops in other directions as well, but I have to confess that this intensity serves as a reminder that, whatever else they are, most vampires still have a lot of human nature left to them. The players in this volume are very much children of their times as well as spooky creatures with beast centers.

There is a lot to enjoy and be intrigued by in this effort by Stefan Petrucha. If you are considering reading the series, this is probably a better start than Nosferatu, which is harder book to read.

Many years ago I was introduced briefly to WoD Vampire lore by a friend who actually participated in the roleplaying game. As a layman I only retained a fraction of the information I was exposed to .... however a one of the things I remembered was that the Assamites were a clan of Vampire assassins. Period. End of lesson. Well, in this installment of the Vampire Dark Ages Clan series - you will learn that they are much more than simple killers for hire. You will learn that Assamite sorcerors exist and they are given a grudging level of respect as well as suspicion by their own clanmates. There are viziers, who appear to be the scholars of Alamut. Then there are the commonly known warriors, of which there are further classifications within this caste that denote status and level of skill in the deadly arts. Another interesting element of this book, is a Ventrue knight who struggles to reconcile his devout faith and chivalry with his vampiric nature. Gifted with the charisma and presence of his bloodline, this Cainite Crusader builds an army destined to reclaim the Holy Land. A group of Assamites are dispatched to ensure this does not happen. Paths cross and the unexpected results. It is a well-written story that could be used as a template for any genre, but uses the threads of human history, the struggle to find meaning and faith, and compelling characters to weave a story that is engaging and illuminating. In my opinion, these novels far surpass the previous series in quality and content. Do not let your experience with those books prevent you from reading these. If you are interested in Medieval history, this book and the other in the series will definitely prove worthwhile.

I think the title of the review says it all.
I am glad I came across this book after knowing and studying the Divine Comedy for many years; Otherwise it may have been pearls before swine.
But if you are a novice, get it and keep it on your bookshelf, and go back to it every once in a while. As your love of Dante, and your faith deepens, you will appreciate it more and more, and like, me may find you need to buy a second copy after the first became so dogeared and fragile.

helen luke is dead now but i wish she wasn't. this
is the best book i ever found about dante. if dante's
comedy seems a mystery to you, if it seems hard to
reach, or if it seems like it has nothing to say to us
now, you need this book. helen luke used dante's poetry
to write a magnificent jungian deconstruction of growth
and love. it makes everything simple. it is magnificent.
i was interested to see that she liked dorothy sayers'
translations (of all the dante translations that there
are) the best. if you have this book, you don't need
any other growth book, you don't need any other literary
analysis of the comedy. she knew dante very well.

The moment I saw the references to Charles Williams and Dorothy L. Sayers I was hooked. Culturely familiar with, but never having studied, Dante's poem, I had always understood it as an allegory of life after death. Wrong! The intersections between Dante's journey as portrayed by Helen Luke and portions of my spiritual journey were intense, meaningful, detailed -- and totally unexpected. The reality of the passage through Hell and Purgatory in this life points to the hope of a portion of the feast to come also in this life. It is not an easy read, but I found myself unable to put it down -- except when the power of a passage would so resonate in me I had to pause to mark it and reflect on it.

This marvellous book opens up Danteland for the contemporary reader. Helen Luke's masterful guidance on the paths of Dante's three-tiered cosmos not only helps us to reenter and relish the Divine Comedy - the towering literary achievement of the medieval imagination - but to use it to enter deeper levels of reality through meditation and active imagination. I have based deeply moving group meditations on this, along the lines of those decribed in my own book "Dreamgates", and we have found that Dante's gates can actually take us into imaginal realms that people appear to inhabit after physical death. As the life dreamer she was, Helen Luke reminds us of the way the radiant guide keeps calling the seeker through dreams, which are so often ignored or forgotten until the BIG moment of spiritual trial and eventual initiation. I would recommend using the middle section of the book in tandem with W.S.Merwin's excellent recent translation of the "Purgatorio", which is more readable than the older versions quoted by Ms. Luke.

Just finished reading " Deep In Our Hearts", a book I'd like to strongly recommend. It captures on a very personal level, the spirit of the Civil Rights era, from the perspective of nine different white women who were deeply involved in the struggle to bring about more racial justice. It is a moving tribute to all the heroes of that very difficult time. To all who were involved at the time or those who are the least bit curious of "what went down", you cannot fail to admire the stories of these brave women. This is history (herstory) as it should be related-from the participants.

They Rode the Freedom Train and Held On For Their Lives

Imagine leaving your comfortable world as you knew it in the erly 1960's. Young white women; some from the north, some from the south. Rural and urban, college kids, middle class, working class and just plain poor. Heading to a dangerous world and joining the early days of the Civil Rights Movement. Leaving behind the scorn, disdain, and ridicule of family and friends. Walking into a climate of hate and bigotry, and joining in civil disobedience against segregation. Walking in the picket lines, sometimes fearing for your life; organizing, and joining in singing hymns of freedom. Going from tears of frustration to smiles of great joy, while hitching a ride on that freedom train and holding on for dear life.
One recent eveing at Northern Lights Book Store and Cafe in St. Johnsbury, Vt., 70 people heard two local women who participated passionately in that movement. The authors read from their book, Deep In Our Hearts: Nine White Women in the Freedom Movement.
The book is an eloquent and powerful one that takes us back to one of the most tumultuous periods in American history; the erly days of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), Freedom Summer, voter registrations, lunch counter sit-ins and the rise of Black Power and the women's movement. Deep In Our Hearts is a collection of essays, that take us into the lives of a group of young women who were transformed by the Civil Rights Movement.
The audience listened as Penny Patch looked back and read softly. "I understand well that what was between us will never be again, but still, that experience remains at the core of who I am. The fact that some of us had deep friendships that crossed all racial lines is simply a miracle. For short periods of time, in those early yers, we leaped over all the history and all of the minefields between us."
Perched on a stool and sipping warm tea to sooth a sore throat, Theresa Del Pozzo read from the book. "My involement with the movement began as a moral reaction to the blatant injustice of segregation and the denial of basic human rights of African-Americans. Along the way I got an education in the intricate patterns of racism and began to experience what I think as the small-c culture of the African_American community: the wisdom, dignity, strength, humor, gentleness and creativeness of its everyday life and people. The experience of living within the black world changed forever the person I was to become and the way I live my adult life."
Listening to the authors as they told their stories one could not help but admire their courage and admire this courageous book. They stand as powerful testaments to a time when the goal of universal justice was truly in sight and to the hope that a new generation of blacks and whites will take up the challenge to make the world a better place.

Forty years ago, in regard to the "race question," white people in this country fell into five general categories: those who never gave a thought to race-based segregation and discrimination (the numbers of whom could probably be counted on one hand); those who through ignorance or paranoia thought that African-Americans were in one way or another "inferior" beings, which somehow justified our own brand of apartheid; those who knew or suspected that the "inferiority" premise applied to African-Americans was bogus but who profited from that fiction being maintained; those who knew or believed that the inferiority idea was false but who, through reluctance or apathy, chose to do or say nothing about it, and those who, deep in their hearts, knew that the inferiority thesis was false and cruelly unfair, knew that our apatheid system made a lie of all the claims of equality our nation prided itself on, and who chose to confront it in an attempt to bring segregation and discrimination to an end through personal involvement and direct action. The nine white women who contributed to this book the stories of their development and their involvement in the civil rights struggle were of that last category. They never really saw themselves as particularly strong or smart, although their writing shows them to be exceptionally articulate, and none of them were brought up by their families to become involved in that fight. They took it upon themselves to make their own stands and become part of that effort regardless of the personal risks. "Deep In Our Hearts" is aptly named - what springs out at us from their stories is their simple strength, the heart-deep commitment to social justice, that helped make this country face up to its promises to all of its citizens. That they came from genuinely different backgrounds reflects the diversity that sets our country apart and which puts the lie to common assumptions about them, such as that they were born of affluent families from the northeast and went south with Ivy League educations and high-flown notions of setting things right. What is also remarkable about their stories and their lives is that they have continued with that commitment to equality and fairness in varied ways; they never saw fit to rest upon their laurels once this nation recognized, in words at least, that racial segregation and discrimination were wrong and brought down the obvious barriers to equality. These little stories, none more than forty-eight pages long, also spell out how their subsequent involvement in combating the Vietnam War was a logical progression, the same struggle on a different front. Although some of them became front-line soldiers in the fight to free women from their own set of shackles, all of them contributed to modern feminism and women's rights more by their actions than by their words. To them, and to the many whose stories who are not in this book, we all owe a debt of gratitude. If not for them this country may not have been able to look itself in the eye in the bathroom mirror. The collective lesson of these stories is that one need not come from uncommon beginnings in order to develop the will to lead extraordinary, adventuresome, purposeful lives. Read their stories, be inspired without being preached to, and put some meat on the dry bones of history.

This is one of the most thorough accounts available of the 1940 northern campaigns. Although of vital importance, little has been written about operations in Denmark and Norway during World War 2. The Germans invaded both countries in April 1940 to ensure a continued flow of iron ore from Scandinavia and to secure additional northern naval bases so that their fleet would not be bottled up as it had been during the First World War. The campaign covered a huge area, involved some intense combat and was one of the only German operations to involve all military branches.

The author seamlessly weaves together a narrative of the complex naval, air and land actions of the campaign. The writing is exceptionally clear and easy to follow. The 2D maps are fantastic. They include: an overview of the operational area and initial fleet movements; the invasion of Denmark; the Royal Navy's response to the invasion; land movements from April 12 to May 3; the Battle of Narvik. This is a excellent account of a little known World War 2 campaign. It is also a example of the Osprey Campaign Series at its very best.

Douglas C. Dildy's DENMARK AND NORWAY 1940: HITLER'S BOLDEST OPERATION tells of an assault which represented the first joint air-land-and-sea campaign in the history of warfare, and thus marked a turning point not just in one battle, but in military strategy as a whole. The campaign led to Winston Churchill's appointment as British Prime Minister and was a key event beyond the ordinary: as such this history needs a place in any serious World War II or general military bookshelf.

A Very Well Put-Together Campaign Summary

The German invasion of Norway and Denmark is a fascinating subject in military history that unfortunately has not received a great deal of attention from English-speaking historians since the British Official History was published decades ago. Readers looking for an unbiased account of the military campaign were hard put to find a good single volume reference. However, Douglas C. Dildy, a retired U.S. Air Force colonel, provides that sorely needed reference in Osprey's Campaign No. 183. Not only does the author provide a well-balanced summary of the operations in Norway, but he also details the little-known operations in Denmark, as well. This is a very well put together campaign summary.

In the opening sections, the author lays out the origins of the campaign and the genesis of the German and Allied plans for Norway. The section on opposing commanders covers 3 German army leaders, 1 naval and 1 Luftwaffe leader, but skims over Norwegian leadership and then describes 3 British and 1 French leader. This section was a bit unbalanced, with French General Bethouart - the only Allied leader who accomplished anything of substance in the campaign getting only a nod (no photo), while British commanders who did little (e.g. Mackesy and Auchinleck) get more than their due. This unbalanced perspective is probably a result of over-reliance on the British official history, which slights the contributions of French, Norwegian and Polish officers while exaggerating the role of people who exercised only paper commands. The section on opposing forces is weightier, with 10 pages discussing relevant air, land and sea forces from all participants. A 2-page order of battle is also included.

Graphically, the volume includes five 2-D maps (Deployment of naval forces, 8 April 1940; the invasion of Denmark, 9 April 1940; Deployment of Royal Navy forces to counter the invasion of Norway, 9 April 1940; the German capture of Southern and Central Norway, 12 April - 3 May 1940; Deployment of forces for the Battle of Narvik, 10 May 1940), three 3-D BEV maps (seaborne assaults in Oslo fjord, 9 April 1940; the battles around Lillehammer, 20-24 April 1940; Allied forces recapture Narvik, 12-28 May 1940) and three battle scenes by John White (the destroyer battle in Narvik Harbor, 10 April 1940; the NBFZ B Heavy tank in the Battle of Kvam, 25 April 1940; FAA Skua attack on the Scharnhorst in Trondheim Fjord, 13 June 1940). The author also provides an excellent bibliography.

The campaign narrative lays out the opening German invasion moves in Norway and Denmark with a commendable level of detail for a volume this size. Coverage of the invasion of Denmark is particularly noteworthy, since few works address this subject (although the author does not really discuss why the troops in Jutland failed to defend the border but the palace guards defended the capital). The author then covers each invasion area in about a half-page, with emphasis on the capture of Oslo. The next sections deals with the Royal Navy's response, the arrival of Allied troops in Norway, the Luftwaffe's air superiority and the recapture of Narvik. Final sections cover the Allied evacuation and the last air-sea battles in Norwegian waters. The photographs supporting the text were excellent throughout the volume.

The author sees the German invasion of Norway as a Pyrrhic victory that crippled the Kriegsmarine for the rest of the war, but "as a joint campaign it set the standard and pattern for all other air-land-sea offensives that followed." I'm not sure that the war's outcome would have been much different if the cruiser Blucher and the 10 destroyers lost at Narvik had survived the campaign - after all, the Royal Navy had the Kriegsmarine outgunned before the invasion, so losses in the campaign could hardly be credited with altering the naval balance. The diversion of numerous divisions to guard Norway's coastline was probably more damaging for the German war effort, since about 10 badly-needed infantry divisions sat on the war on a sideshow front. Overall, this is a terrific effort, with the only significant omission being the lack of data on personnel casualties suffered in the campaign or aircraft losses.

A more complete study than most you'll find.

I have read quite a bit about the Norwegian campaign, but this slender volume covers much that is new to me. Too often, the focus is on the initial invasion and the naval actions. The land side typically only rates brief mention about how the lack of air cover doomed the Allied counter-invasion. However, Doug Dildy instead focuses on the land side, detailing how the Germans managed to conquer Norway on a shoe-string. It is a remarkable story. There are plenty of maps to help understand the complex operation, the 3-D maps in particular being used to show critical actions in detail. He shows how German airpower was actually employed to help decide the battles; but it is also clear that German aggressiveness, tactical superiority and ability to out-maneuver their opponents was not limited to their panzer divisions.

The naval side is hardly slighted and Dildy also covers the invasion of Denmark, something usually completely ignored. It is very impressive how he was able to cram so much in just 96 pages; this book ranks among the best of the Osprey Campaign series.

Not much to say beyond the detailed reviews here except to add my insignificant chorus that this is a great Bible on both scholarship and utility.

Those who are converts from Protestantism (like myself) will enjoy the mineutia of arguments on translation issues during the problems of Protestant ascendancy, compared to the hermeneutic agenda of the translations of the zeitgeist driven era.

Excellent Bible, well worth the price.

My aunt and I were discussing Bibles the other day, and she made the following comment: "When you buy a Bible, buy the best one that you can afford."
With that advice, I headed straight for the Douay-Rheims Bible. Beautiful both in its language and its appearance, due to the meticulous translation and leather binding respectively, it's easily the "best" Catholic Bible I could find.

The Douay Rheims was translated directly from the Latin Vulgate at the famous English seminaries of Douay and Rheims in France by the college scholars of the former Catholic seminary university, the University of Oxford. These Oxford Catholic scholars which included Cardinal Gregory Martin were professed Roman Catholics who refused to submit to authority that Queen Elizabeth I was the head of the Church of England. Cardinal Gregory Martin was also a former Oxford associate and personal friend of St. Edmund Campion (the Jesuit saint who was butchered into pieces alive in England for being a Catholic priest).

Here is an excellent and good example of the Douay Rheims translation. St. Luke 1:28 says, "Hail full of grace, the Lord is with you". The KJV Authorised Version says, "Hail favored one, the Lord is with you". The New American Bible and the Jerusalem Bible says the same thing like the KJV Authorised Version. The former Bibles are Catholic Bibles while the latter is a Protestant one! What is even worse, the NAB and KJV Authorised Verison were translated by Protestants! Pope Paul VI even states that the former was translated by heretics in his letter of introduction regarding the NAB.

The original Latin translation based on the Hebrew word-for-word says, "Ave gratia plena, dominus tecum". "Ave gratia plena" translates as either "Hail full of grace or "Hail filled with grace". The Protestant scholars translated out the real verse on St. Luke 1:28 because they believed it was only reference to the Catholic prayer, "Hail Mary" at the same time changing the biblical importance and meaning of the verse regarding the Virgin Mary. The meaning of "full of grace" means that the Blessed Virgin was conceived without the stain of original sin.

How can a Catholic defend the infallible dogma of Our Lady's Immaculate Conception with faulty Catholic Bible translations like the New American Bible or the Jerusalem Bible? How can our Faith be defended by the attacks of enemies Our Church? The Rosary is biblically associated with the Bible and how can we defend the prayer "Ave Maria" with these faulty translations.

Non-Catholic churches such as the Eastern Orthodox church translate St. Luke 1:28 correctly like the Catholic Bible.

Unfortunately, most Catholic Bibles like the New American Bible (NAB) were translated by Protestant scholars (with the exception of the RSV: Catholic Edition which translated St. Luke 1:28 to the original version).

Using "Thou" and "Thee" may be a serious obstacle to many Catholic readers of the Bible. Logically, would you rather read a Bible that you can understand but it is not giving you the real and full meaning of what it is saying or rather you read a Bible that you cannot understand but it gives you the real and full meaning of what it is saying?

The Douay-Rheims had been a reliable Bible translation for more than 500 years until 1941 with the publication of the Confraternity Version. The Douay Rheims Bible had only one revision in 1742 by the Apostolic Vicar of London, Bishop Richard Challoner. The King James Authorised Version had numerous revisions and editing because of the poor translation given by its Protestant scholars. In fact, the Douay Rheims Bible's English was updated to the English used in the 18th and 19th centuries by the Servant of God, Bishop Richard Challoner. The 1611 King James Authorised Verison was never edited after its publication and it is far more archaic in its English translation than the Douay Rheims.

Like the King James Bible, reading the Douay Rheims enhances your reading skills and your English vocabulary whether you are British or an American because the Douay Rheims is truly a British English translation. You will hear or read words that you will never see in modern translated Bibles such as these words:

1. Anathema
2. Sundry
3. Husbandry
4. Husbandman
5. Brethren
6. Heretic
7. Schism
8. Heresy

The commentary of this Bible entirely and 100% Catholic without Modernist influence or heretical teachings. If you want a Douay Rheims Bible with much more commentary for the Biblical verses, I suggest for you to buy the Haydock Bible of the Douay Rheims Bible. It is about $100 but with extensive and verse-to-verse commentary on the Bible. It really helps and is excellent for helping you understanding the Bible.

Avoid modern Catholic Bibles translated with Modernist errors and commentary. These Bible spread heretical commentaries and teachings. Modernism is a heresy that was condemned by Pope St. Pius X in 1907. Any baptized Catholic who professes or believes the errors or heresy of Modernism, is not a Catholic, but a heretic. Examples of Modernist errors are: Dogmas evolve over time because times of have changed. Dogma needs to be taught with a new perspective and understanding. The Catholic Church doesn't teach that anymore because it is traditional. The Catholic Church needs women to be priests (condemned by Pope John Paul II and his predecessors). The [infallible] dogma of No Salvation Outside the Church is wrong because there is salvation with other religions and it is simply narrow-minded to believe it.

This is the best Bible for Catholics.Period.The Confraternity Version which is a revision of the Douay runs a close second.

This edition contains the Encyclicals Providenssimus Deus,Spiritus Paraclitus, and Divino Afflante Spiritu written by
Popes Leo XIII,Benedict XV,and Pius XII respectively.

It also contains many helpful footnotes, cross references, maps,
chronological index of both Old and New Testaments and a doctrinal index.

The translation is quite readable. The only thing I might caution about is not to get confused over the spelling of some OT names and books. For example "Noah" is spelled "Noe."

Also the Books of Samuel are called 1 and 2 Kings while 1 and 2
Kings are called 3 and 4 Kings.

But it's worth the extra effort to get used to.This is still the best version for Catholics.Stay away from modern versions. Especially the New American Bible. And if you want a great commentary check out the Haydock Douay Rheims. It's awesome.
