This book finds a little "White Trash" in all of us. Fun to sit & read until you're finished, and this can be accomplished in just a few hours! The illustrations are equally amusing! Enjoyed the artistists renditions of each and every definition of "White Trash". Jeff Foxworthy has nothing compared to these hilarious women!

I can't believe I used to work with this chick! She's sick I tell you, sick! This book was hilarious and truthful. I found myself pausing in the middle of my laughter because although it was funny, it was describing what most of us do and think everyday. Almost an insult but you gotta laugh, we've all been there and she has such a talent for making a joke about it. A must read. Especially the jokes about the inmates!

This one's a side-splitter!

The Book of White Trash made me laugh out loud. I took it to work, and everyone loved it! Very funny material, and the illustrations are great. We all have a bit of "white trash" in us (no matter what color we are) which makes it just that much more funny. Makes a great gift, too!

Laughted till i couldn't breath, but wouldn't put it down.

It's been ten years and a million stories since I read these books, and I can promise you that you will not find a better horror anthology out there. Books 1-3 changed my life, literally. The stories are so well written, it's almost magical. Book 4 is not quite as good overall, but there are still some great stories.

If you love short horror, pick these up. Don't bother with #5 that just came out. Get the originals.

Joe R. Landsdale, the master, does it again. It takes brilliance to know brilliance. These people can write. Some of these stories actually made me physically uncomfortable. Try to get it if you can.

The "Borderlands" Series is the best dark fiction writing I have ever read. Really skirts the edges and pulls no punches but without the traditional horror cliches. Nothing goes bump in the night but after reading these stories a simple bump won't even phase you anymore.

I have read all four of the Borderlands collection and will say beyond a shadow of a doubt that this is not only the scariest stuff out there, but also cutting-edge fiction at its finest.

The stories presented in each collection are intelligent, extremely well-written, and creepy to the extreme. Those who enjoy the standard psychopathic killer yarn will not find what they're looking for here. Instead they'll find a type of horror that takes a time-honored genre and breathes new life into it. Simply outstanding.

I've read almost all of Ms.Dunlap's "Trust Me" columns over the years and waited all that time for her to apply the quick wit and entertaining dialog I've always enjoyed, to a novel. The mystery kept me guessing who did it, until the very end! Birders and non-birders alike will get a kick out of this story. You don't have to live in the "frozen tundra" to appreciate the descriptions of Minnesota and northern birds. Thanks, Jan, it was worth the wait!

Dunlap teaches writing at Mankato State University in Minnesota. This is the first in the Bob White Birder Murder Mystery series.

Bob is a counselor at Savage High School in Minnesota, and his sister Lily is a landscape designer. Yes, their parents did have a warped sense of humor. Bob and his friend Mike are up in the Superior National Forest on the North Shore trying to find the elusive boreal owl.

While tramping though snow on this freezing early spring night, they literally stumble on a body. It is a man they know, Dr. Andrew Rahr, a Duluth ornithologist, a man who had done a lot of research on the boreal owl and who was secretive about where to find them. Rahr seems to have been hit on the head, and is in street clothes, his parka, mittens and hat missing. Then a bear appears, and Scary Stan, another birder, magically appears out of the darkness, shoots at the bear and chases him off, and disappears. Very odd!

Police officer John Knott is suspicious of Bob for a short time, enough to call his school and check his alibi, which is all it takes for the administration to ask him to take a leave of absence. Bob goes up north, and decides to help Knott solve the case, so he can keep his job. His sister Lily has asked him to check out Very Nice Trees, a possible source of a beautiful wild flower, the ladyslipper, and white pines, in Two Harbors. She had bought some Christmas Trees from them last year, and they were almost too good to be true. She is a bit skeptical.

Bob starts his investigations at the University in Duluth, where he encounters Dr. Rahr's wacky ex-secretary Alice Wylie, and Rahr's old graduate assistant, Ellis. Also in the running for suspect are: Margaret, the leader of Save Our Boreals; her friend Vern Thompson, the owner of Very Nice Trees, and an ex-logger; and Scary Stan.

No one in the birding community really knows what Stan does for a living, but Bob discovers he is dating his sister, and calls himself an accountant! Luce Nilsson, Bob's girlfriend, joins him up north, and the two of them come very close to both the boreal owl, and the murderers. Too close to be safe!

Armchair Interviews says: Dunlap's quick pace and quick wit makes this book a delight to read.

Fascinating !! I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The author's description of the Minnesota woods and cold weather actually made me feel that I needed more blankets on the bed. The characters seem like people you actually know and deal with every day. The conclusion was exciting and surprising. I was charmed by the insightful world of 'birders', and can't wait to read more from Ms. Dunlap.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Boreal Owl Murders. Anyone who has ever been in the northeast -- specifically Minnesota -- in the winter immediately can feel the cold when Ms. Dunlap describes the setting for the mystery. I really liked the tight group of characters and the time duration of the mystery. I felt very sympathetic for the hero, Bob White, and found myself grinning during the sections when he is at work as a guidance counselor. I read a lot of mysteries and this one had me guessing until the end as to the full cast of villians. I also came away with a real feeling about the lifestyle of a dedicated Birder. Anyhone who has lived in the northeast, worked in the academic world, enjoys the outdoors or wants to know more about Birding will enjoy this book. I can't wait until the next one!

Mindblower!!!

Review Date: 2004-03-07
In Britain during the 1960s there was a massive cultural upheaval, that was spurred by American rhythm and blues imported albums and singles. Prompted by the huge success of the Beatles and the rich youth culture, many of kids took up guitars, basses, drums, organs, harmonicas etc and formed rock and roll combos across the Isles. Most of these bands never saw the inside of a recording studio, however, many more of them were picked up by major record labels due to the success of the Beatles, the Stones and other English acts. Out of the few that had recording contracts even fewer had hits in their homeland, and fewer still had hits stateside. This book covers them all. Through evident exhaustive research the author chrolnicles in encyclodia form the histories and not so histories of many English bands, many of whom most, at least American readers, are not familiar with. Also with a virtual treasure trove of rare pictures, this book can serve as a complete study of a time when creativity was alive and thriving in music, fasion, and thought. I recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in the British Invasion genre of music, as well as to anyone who wants to broaden their knowledge of rock and popular music. This book was a mindblower, and I love it very much, I think you will too!!

British Invasion - Who are those people?

Review Date: 2007-01-26
While the majority of the world saw February 9, 1964 as the start of the so-called British Invasion, the reality was that British bands had been around for several years before that date. Only handful of these bands are remembered even by devotees of the genre, whether on this side of the Atlantic or the other. Many were at best "one-hot wonders." Others came and went like a cool afternoon breeze leaving barely a trace of their passage. In some cases, groups disbanded - after being fully succesful, slightly successful or complete failures - to have their memebers gain worldwide acclaim later on.

British Beat: Then, Now And Rare 1960-1969 by Terry Rawling tracks the overwhelming majority of these bands through their lives during the critical first nine years. He describes the band's origins, their activities during the period under study and their demise and/or current status.

While the coverage could be considered superficial, it is far from that for those interested in the music of the British Invasion period who can and should use it as a guidebook for more in depth study.

One final truly touching thing about the book is found on the inside back cover. Author Rawling shows several score photos of members of some of bands as they appeared in recent times. The images are a fitting close to the period and to this very information and entertaining volume.

The Feminine Side of Ranching
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-06-27
Many books and movies have told the story of Cowboys and the Wild West over the years. This book tells the love story of a seasoned rancher and his young bride as they begin their life together in an unbelieveably remote part of Arizona in the middle of the 20th Century. Bob White brought his new wife, Joyce, a California Girl of the 1930s, to his ranch. She had to learn about everything there was to know about ranching. She cooked on a wood stove, she tended farm animals as well as range cattle and she established a wonderful relationship with her favorite horse and with the cowdogs of the ranch. All the while, she raised her son, Mike, and home-schooled him in the isolation of their remote ranch. She hauled water, gardened, and became a master seamstress. That's not bad for the greenhorn she was when she arrived. She tells her story in a delightful and honest way that results in grabbing the reader's attention and making it impossible to put the book down. She generously shares what she learned and the clever ways she devised to put her knowledge to good use. What is particularly interesting is the many tasty recipes she devised and shared throughout her telling of her life on the ranch.

Joyce writes in an easy, honest, and casual manner which makes this book comfortable and interesting reading. It is hard for the reader to put it down because one wants to read more about the hardships she overcame as well as the joys she experienced in becoming a real cowgirl. Enjoy.

The book is about the ranch of my mother's brother and his family. It has wonderful pictures and although I haven't been there since about 1954 it is very much as I remember it. The incidents and experiences of an isolated life in the western part of Arizona are brought back to life in a very readable style. Joyce White has captured the essence of that life. I could not put the book down and finished reading it in one evening.

What a great tale of ranch life!

As you read the book you feel as if Joyce is sitting with you on the porch telling wonderful stories as you eat supper. You become a family friend and feel like you've visited the Loving U Ranch before. Her favorite ranch recipes are a homey touch and the details of real life on the trail are insightful. There are poignant moments of her sweet horse, favorite cowdogs and her son growing up immersed in Burro Creek Canyon that will make you smile and maybe bring a tear to your eye.

The book is an easy read and I was sorry when I finished- I wanted her to keep "talking!" It is a rare glimpse into the life of a gal and her cowboy. Wonderful!

I learned about Canadian good girls, bad girls, winners, losers, saints and sinners. We have an amazing history of chicks in Canada! Thanks to the author for making it so much fun to learn about the women of my country. I loved the sections on being a "good' wife and about the war times and what women went through. This book runs the gamut and my eyes are certainly opened wider to what my mom and grandma went through! Canadian Chicks Rock!

You don't have to be an official Canuck Chick to fall in love with Ann Douglas's hilarious guide to Canadian women's accomplishments. If you've ever wanted to know more about the kind of women the "Great White North" has produced, look no further. The book kicks off with a side-splitting "Good Wife Exam" that cleverly pokes fun at so-called "expert advice" to women during the early to mid 1900s. Thankfully, a whole lotta Chicks and Mamas refused to take this advice. Douglas leads readers on a light-hearted but fact-filled romp through Canadian accomplishments and exploits in sports, the media, Hollywood, etc. If you ever thought history--particular women's history--was dull stuff, you haven't encountered Canuck Chicks.

If you have no other book about carousels, this is the one to have. Not only does the book illuminate the history of carousels, dispelling some common myths along the way, but the step-by-step, well illustrated process of carving a carousel is clearly explained in easy to understand terms. As Bruce's identical twin brother I can attest to the heart, mind and artistry that goes into every one of Bruce's creations. Many years ago I received a call from Bruce and he pleaded for my help. I replied that I had no knowledge or skill. Bruce persisted and taught me how to carve carousels using the same steps and techniques described in this book - several of the carousels I have carved are pictured in this book. Perhaps one of your creations will be in his next book!

Although this magnificent book is being marketed as a strictly how-to book, as a lover of carousels I attest to the fact that this book includes more history and delightful anecdotes about carousels, horses, designs and designers than any other book ever. Bruce encourages you to set your imagination free. Also, there is a step by step structure showing Bruce's one of a kind process. Even if you don't carve or don't want to start, it is still enlightening to see how this present day master carver makes lovely masterpieces for carousels and living rooms.

Dr. Ben Gallagher's account of WWI is one of the most compelling books I have ever had the pleasure to read. Between his medical background, self-reflection and observation this is perhaps one of the most complete views of war and humanity ever committed to paper.

Inbetween his own story, Dr. Gallagher also relates the stories of the people around him, including one of the most remarkable escapes from a POW Camp I have ever heard. He also includes the stories of his patients whose courage is both humbling and inspirational.

I am grateful that this account was published and I am only too sorry that more readers have not found this hidden treasure. Don't miss out. This is one of the best personal accounts you will ever find!

A treasured addition to any library.

Gallagher's memoir is a combination of clinical observation and vivid prose which provides one with a unique view into the March 1918 Offensive which should become a classic of that nearly forgotten generation. His detail and imagery are phoenominal. Factual in the extreme, his reference to the obscure 12th. U.S. Engineers of Missouri railroad men only serves to enhance the credibility of his experience. I have not, yet, seen a medical memoir of any war to compare. We are fortunate that this account has been published rather than lost in the archives of some facility.

Gallagher was a freshly minted physician when he volunteered for the British Army ahead of the American mobilization for World War One. Fortunately for us his narrative skills matched his surgical abilities.
He was attached to the Gloucesters in the Somme sector, and, despite his misgivings, quickly became an effective battle surgeon. His remarkable adventures, his relations with the English (for whom he had no great love), and, especially, his descriptions of Great War surgical practices make for fascinating reading.
The experienced military history reader may notice a few historical inaccuracies, (the U.S. 11th Engineers were not from the Missouri National Guard; Gallagher's decoration was the Military Cross, not the Military Medal, a different award), but these don't detract seriously from the immediacy and impact of one of the best memoirs by an American serving with the British Army.

George's Pond: Created in the Beloved Tradition of Charlotte's Web
West's Time Machine

Being a children's writer and educator, I often enjoy reading Charlotte's Web as a child and now I enjoy reading the book to my son and my students. I believe part of the reason this book has remained one of my favorites is because of the classic friendship between Wilbur and Charlotte. Both characters demonstrate an unselfish kind of love that is demonstrated from the time they meet. As a mother I want to teach my children the valuable life lesson of being a good friend and I think this story teaches that lesson in a non-didactic fashion. Charlotte's Web will eternally be a classic in my heart.
