This story is suitable for all ages. It is for the old and the young ones.I like this book mainly because the characters are humorous and interesting, the setting of the story are not too much and last of all it is full of emotions. Happiness, sorrow, excitement and it is also a matter of life and death.

This book is great, it tells the classic story of friendship

I enjoyed reading Charlotte's Web as a child and now I enjoy reading the book to my children and students. I think part of the reason this book has remained one of my favorites is because of the classic friendship between Wilbur and Charlotte. Both characters demonstrate an unselfish kind of love that is demonstrated from the time they meet. As a mother I want to teach my children the valuable life lesson of being a good friend and I think this story teaches that lesson in a non-didactic fashion. Charlotte's Web will forever be a classic in my heart.

An excellent companion to the original book.

I purchased this book several years ago to give me more insight into E.B. White's classic novel. Every time I read and re-read the notes, rewrites and history of this touching story for children, I find myself learning so much more about the writing style of this fabulous author. The photographs of White's farmhouse add texture and depth to the story and my first grade students appreciated that he, too, had to make revisions on his work! A wonderful resource for anyone interested in children's literature.

I felt really sad seeing this book was among the bargain books in Borders Bookstore the other day. This is a great book, talking about almost everything on Charlotte's Web, and a lot about E.B. White the author.

The main part is the chindren's famous fiction, Charlotte's Web. The layout of the novel is the same as the one originally published. Prof Neumeyer's Notes are scattered in the big margin beside the text of Charlotte's Web.

A very well researched book, it contains an introduction before the novel. After the novel, there are several appendices. In Appendix D, E.B. White's Letters and Comments about Charlotte's Web, we can read several short essays by E.B. White, including Death Of A Pig, and The Future of Reading. The Recommended Reading and Works Cited are also very helpful to understand the fiction and E.B. White.

After reading the book, I understand Charlotte's Web much better. If lots of knowleged people had read this book, they would have never made any unforgiveable mistakes. (Such as, Edward C. Sampson in E.B. White, Twayne United States Authors Series, wrongly stating the girl's name as Fern Zucherman. In a recently published children's book, The Art of Reading, Fern bacame Fern Avery! Do the editors still edit?)

It also shows how E.B White revised his novel, thus teaching us how to write well!

I first read this series when I was a child and loved it from the beginning. It is an awesome parity to the Bible, which allows younger readers understand the story of Jesus a little more easily. John goes to Anthropos first, in The Sword Bearer, and finds a person from his past there. Then, his niece, Lisa, and nephews, Wesley and Kurt, go there in The Tower of Geburah, and they find out that adventures can be both scary as well as fun.
It is a series that will enchant the young and fill the old with joy. Read it for yourself and find out how enchanted and joyful you will be!

Crime in The Dark City
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2004-10-06
THE ASPHALT JUNGLE is probably one of the earliest crime caper stories written in which the details of the planning, execution and aftermath of a crime are explained. It may not be the first book of its kind but it's certainly the earliest that I can remember reading and is a terrific study of the interactions of a diverse group of individuals who are all dependent on one another for the success of their operation.

We are softened up right at the opening of the book with a statement from the new Chief of Police acknowledging that the crime rate in their (unnamed) city was at disturbing levels. He follows this up by vowing that he was going to make a difference and clean up the city while he was running the police force.

We switch over to the criminals where a plan is being organised by a mastermind criminal known as Herr Doktor, a very unlikely looking little man who has just been released from prison. Doc is after three reliable men to help him carry out his plan and asks a small-time bookie named Cobby for help assembling them. Cobby's link to Doc is through Doc's cellmate from prison. The plan that Doc has cooking is of a jewellery heist that could be worth half a million dollars.

They recruit Gus, a small hunchbacked man with a bad temper as their driver, Louis "Schemer" Bellini as their lockman and the largely unknown quantity of a man named Dix as their muscle. They then turn to a crooked lawyer named Emmerich to stake the operation. Emmerich is well known in criminal circles for his wealth and tight lips, but little do the conspiring thieves know that his fortune has dwindled to the point where he is now just about broke. The prospect of such a huge take is almost too much for Emmerich to conceal his enthusiasm agreeing to finance the operation while secretly planning a double cross would solve his financial woes.

Even though the planning is impeccable, problems occur during the heist and the way in which the makeshift team works together is critical to their success. It's this aspect of the story that becomes the main focus once the robbery is over and the pressure of evading an ever tightening police dragnet is applied.

W.R. Burnett has written a wonderful story of desperation, deception and mistrust set in a gritty world of tough criminals and equally tough cops. He has given his caper the suitably dark setting of a brooding city rife with corruption as he dangles the promise of vast wealth just out of reach of his flawed characters.

Seminal caper novel

In Little Caesar ,W R Burnett wrote a classic and pivotal novel of the rise of gangsterism .Twenty years later ,in 1949 ,he wrote The Asphalt Jungle and in so doing introduced most of the elements of the caper novel -a complicated robbery for big stakes is planned and we the reader watch as events unfold from planning to execution.
The switch from the emphasis on individualism and the charismatic figure of the gangster to this novel where the emphasis is on teamwork ,planning and the meticulous application of specialist skills is in many ways refelective of societal change and the shift away from crime as an individual response ,to crime as a corporate entity .

The plotting ,as befits the subject,is mechanical and the caper is laid out before the reader ;it is precisely timed and requires absolute adherence to detail and schedule in order to work.

The contrast between this cold impersonal planning and the unpredictability of human emotions and behaviour is pivotal to the story and exposes the folly of any plans which fail to take the human element into account

Burnett is good at showing the clash between the criminals and the cops and succeeds in dividing reader loyalties -the two sides are opposed but share common characteristics.

Good pulp writing and a slick piece of gem bright plotting

The Asphalt Jungle is perhaps best known for its 1950s film adaptation (..supposedly a real good movie). However little do most folks realize the screenplay was co-authored by the man (Burnett) who wrote the original novel. The novel is generally available in paperback form in the UK but only as an "e-book" in the USA. This is a shame because I was surprised at how wonderful a story The Asphalt Jungle really is.

Okay, so what *is* the story? It is about a bunch of low-life criminals planning a jewelry store heist. The characters are an eclectic bunch (rednecks, blue collar immigrants, a German "doctor", a wealthy lawyer). Each person is greedy and distrustful of each other. Despite carefully planning the heist doesn't come off terribly well. Tragically, it is the individual weaknesses of the characters and the mutual distrust which ultimately leads to catastrophic consequences.

While the story might sound somewhat formulaic (..Reservoir Dogs seems almost like a modern film adaptation of it) I found the book to be a most enjoyable read. The prose has a tight feel, and the characterizations are simply wonderful. I plan to seek out other works by Burnett such as Little Caesar.

Bottom line: a classic. Strongly recommended.

Though numerous susbsequent imitations have taken some of the edge off this classic novel, it is still a powerful look into the seedy underworld of post-WWII America (Burnett knows the milieu-- he was one of the first on the scene of the St. Valentine's Day Massacre, and once worked as a night clerk at a hotel frequented by lowlifes and criminals). While it is a caper novel (the first one, in fact), it has less to do with the mechanics of carrying out a major crime (in this case, a million-dollar jewelry store heist) than it does with the interplay of the gangsters. H. R. F. Keating ranks it as one of the 100 best crime and mystery books, yet it seems as if Burnett's work has been largely (and unjustly) forgotten today.

This is a perfect book for children, and an interesting read for adults as well. It contains a wealth of information about the culture of the Incas and the lore of the Tarquoias, and reads very prettily as both a story and a textbook. The narration is presented in an easy and conversational manner, and as long as you look up the pronunciation of the Inca words, this would be a fun book to read out loud as well.

It gave me great pleasure to purchase and now to review Diana's book. I had tried to find copies several years ago but everywhere I looked it was out of stock. Although I have not seen her for many years and never had the pleasure of seeing her dance with the NYC Ballet, I am very proud of her accomplishments and of being able to purchasing copies for my siblings. Now, I will be ordering copies for my grandchildren. The girls will love receiving copies. It is an excellent book for anyone, young or old, who appreciates others who have fulfilled their dreams. The drawings and pictures are wonderful. I recommend this book to anyone who has a child, enjoys ballet or loves to read a wide variety of inspirational books.

I'm not a ballerina--I am one of those who took a few years of dance and never had the drive or desire to work at it--but I love this book!

White shows that she had to work to achieve her dream, that she sometimes made mistakes, that it helped to have suport of other people but that ultimately it was up to HER.

Wonderful!

This book, although short and recommended for ages 4-8, is inspiring for ages 4-104 (lol). It's great to read when you're discouraged about anything (not just ballet), because it motivates you to get your butt out there and try again! Now on a personal note...Diana is my teacher and has inspired me time after time to work even harder than I thought possible. Get the book and keep it around for when you're down, because it'll help you through almost anything!

A Nice Barney Book that Can Be Used as a Primer - a review of "Barney Says Please and Thank You"

This is a very nice Barney book that demonstrates not only good manners but also cooperation and cleaning up. In the story, Baby Bop is having a pretend birthday party for Mr. Bear. Baby Bop and Barney decide to use the pretend session to practice their manners. They then set up a party table, blow up balloon, get out toy plates, make peanut butter sandwiches, make music, have a puppet show, etc.

Besides practicing say 'please' and 'thank you', Barney shows children that you don't speak with your mouth full, and that after you are done playing that the right thing to do is to clean up. (Go Barney!)

One of things that I wanted to add was that this book is appropriate to use as a beginning reader. My daughter, who is six, reads this as one of her practice books. Since there is no "search inside this book" feature I'll give you the text from the last page so you can judge the reading level for yourself. This is perhaps the most challenging text in the book.

The two friends take turns
washing and drying dishes.
Barney says, "Thank you for inviting
me to your nice party, Baby Bop."
Baby Bop smiles happily.
"You're welcome," she says.

Five Stars. Here's a Barney book that demonstrates the wonder of please and thank you, as well as demonstrates that you don't talk with your mouth full, and that part of manners is also cleaning up after yourself. Good Read-Aloud. Typical and good Barney artwork.

Diane Dean White has given us so much in her current volume, "Beach Walks." Even though I know her youngest son, Brian, I've never met her in person. Yet, after reading "Beach Walks" it's as though I grew up in the same neighborhood with her children, and maybe even near her during those wonderful childhood years.

Her recollections of the family neighborhood(s), the trips to Florida to visit her grandparents, and the creativity of both parents is really heart-warming. Maybe a family like this one really does exist. Of course it does...Diane grew up in it!

Her poignant illustrations, life applications, and gems of wisdom have made me laugh, have brought tears to my eyes, and have stirred a desire to be closer to those who mean so much in my life.

Her retelling of the children's first dog, "General Lee" was about as funny and as sensitively captivating as any story I've read in a very long time. Her passion for people, for God, and for life is contagious.

This is a volume suitable for just about every occasion. I plan to buy several for gifts.

Do the same. It is money well spent.

Under the Faery Blue Moon--Dawn Thompson--At last, fans of Ms. Thompson and her melodious style have the sequel to "Belle of the Blue Moon Ball", where we met the mischievous Puck and his accomplice Oberon. The two are still up to their elbows in magical mayhem, only this time Queen Tatiana is on to them. Can they complete their mission and still manage to placate the queen? Ms. Thompson will delight fans with this lighthearted romp through London, especially with the aftermath of the havoc wreaked on the Blue Moon Ball (which begins in the Blue Moon Magic anthology)! Be on the lookout for her other award-winning books, "The Ravencliff Bride", "The Waterlord" and "The Falcon's Bride".

The Anti-Kissing League--Leanne Burroughs--Set in 1909, Georgia, Millicent Baker is captivated by the handsome new stranger in town, Geoffrey Standish. Though he wants no serious commitments, he cannot overlook the genuine goodness and beauty in Millie. With a curmudgeonly anti-kissing league trying to dry up all the love, a fateful wish on the Blue moon has a tough job to see to! Abounding with hilarious and heart melting scenarios, Ms. Burroughs's latest is a pure delight to read. Geoff was a great hero, one I took much pleasure in with his forthright witticisms. Also available from Burroughs: "Highland Wishes" and "Her Highland Rogue".

Leap of Faith--Jill & Julia--Marcella Richards has it all--a wonderful career, money and the best home Chicago has to offer. But all of it is a meaningless without the man she hoped to share it with. Her wish on a Blue Moon summons the gnomette, Lola, who gives her the chance to find happiness with Drew again...by traveling back in time. Joint efforts by Jill and Julia bring to readers a quirky tale of love left in the hands of a miniature wish granter. Marcella must make some serious decisions if she's to have the life her heart wants and her crossroads is not an easy one. A delightful tale of love that has been given a second chance.

When Mules Rush In--Jacquie Rogers--Willow Jones is in hiding from high society Boston life. As former debutant Eleanor Winthrop-Douglas, she's worth a fortune--the bane of her existence. Luke Tyson has been hired by one of her more unscrupulous suitors to retrieve her. What he doesn't realize is Willow is the woman for him. Fortunately, he has the help of his trusty mule, Merlin. And just what is up with Willow's reigning chicken, DeborahAnne? Plenty is afoot, and much of it is the four-legged variety! The Old West meets some very special blue moon magic in this cleverly done story by Rogers. A very unique spin on the sorcerer Merlin lends her tale a witty and otherworldly flavor.

The Star Traveler--Victoria Houseman--Haley Stone grieves for her mother and a reminder about tales of the Blue moon take her outside one night to make a wish. Donovan de Lyon is from a long line of Star Travelers, a race dedicated to fulfilling wishes of happiness across the universe. Though he will take over as Master Star Traveler soon, he thinks only to make his family happy even though it is not his wish. With Earth's Blue Moon coming, he's off to fulfill wishes there and hears Haley's. In fulfilling his duties, will Donovan find his own happiness with a giving and beautiful woman? Ms. Houseman's tale of love transcending the stars is one to cherish in this wonderful collection of stories. The concept behind her view of the Blue Moon is refreshingly unique and filled with an interesting race of people that I would love to hear more about.

Sentimental Journey--Judith Laik--On the eve of her sweetheart's deployment, 1942 in Tacoma, Washington, Eve Larson is desperate to seal their love. When Howard leaves without the intimate embraces she hoped for, Eve feels an increasingly foreboding sense of doubt. Three years later, after reports of his plane going down in a bombing raid, Eve lives life day to day. At a friend's reminder, she makes a wish on the Blue moon for her beloved and the moon's magic works a miracle of the heart. Ms. Laik's tale spun a wistful urge to see these lovers reunited and the poignant touches throughout kept my interest till the very sweet end. A delightful read!

A Blue Vacation--Michelle Scaplen--Brenda is plain tired of being overlooked and underappreciated. When an opportunity comes to go on a tropical vacation a coworker's expense, she takes life by the horns and goes. A new do and new clothes and she's on her way to enjoying herself for once. But when her gorgeous coworker shows up too, will the sparks they set off last? Nick is pleasantly surprised by a woman he'd never noticed before and he's not about to let her go. Nick is a wonderful man, one that will surprise readers too with his instinctive caring for the talented and underappreciated Brenda. A pleasing tale of love that was right under their noses.

Blue Moon Magic--Anne Marie Bradley--Claire Jacobs quits her interior design job in New York and takes on one in Key West at Hotel Castle. Built by a mysterious Lord Archer in 1886, Claire feels a connection to the ancient stones and realizes she has dreamed of it since childhood. As strange dreams of a heartbroken and sensual man invade her sleep, Claire sets out to discover what it is about Hotel Castle that has her in its grasp. What she finds is the hope of a love so deep, it may have withstood the ultimate test. Enduring hearts mark this enchanting story by author Bradley. The magical pull of the castle had me in its thrall, almost as if I walked the old towers and corridors myself. Add to that a gripping mystique surrounding Lord Archer, and "Blue Moon Magic" makes for a heart melting time of a read. Bradley's contribution is a stellar addition, one not to be missed.

Kissing Lessons--Sherrie Holmes--The vibrant and voluptuous Millicent Fairweather accosts Viscount Selkirk from out of the blue one day. Thinking him a servant in the lord's home, she presses the man to aid her in gaining the lord's interest. Her Blue Moon wish is well on its way to becoming true and with this "gardeners" help, she'll have her man in no time. Ms. Holmes pens one of the most lighthearted and humorous reads of the book. Their interactions are genuinely amusing and it was hard to look away from whether or not the young lady would be able to resist the dashing gardener/lord. Big ups to Ms. Holmes for a thoroughly delightful tale!

Muses in the Moonlight--Patty Howell--Calli Winson is a woman haunted by unknown past. She visits Allenvale, PA in hopes of bringing some clarity to a life she never had with her real parents. Atop a moonlit mountain she meets Jacob Isaacs, a sexy and intriguing preacher. He sees something in the forlorn beauty, and his intuitive abilities draw out the naturally caring person that she is. When the story of her lost family sparks an idea, Jacob personally goes about solving the mystery. Author Howell has penned a classic tale of love and heartwarming reunion. A very nostalgic feel permeates the story, one that reached straight to the heart of this reader. I daresay we might have the makings of a future Nora Roberts or Barbara Delinsky. Much of the dialogue had me smiling, a good sign of an excellent read. Looking forward to many more from Ms. Howell!

Blue Moon Reunion--Gerri Bowen--Piper has awaited the return of her love, Sir Robin, for many years. In the meantime, cruel and untrustworthy men take her home. It comes as no surprise when she thinks Robin amongst that group of knaves. He too harbors deep resentments towards her and vows revenge. When he returns to aid in thwarting another siege on her home, Robin must figure out who was behind his imprisonment. Could it really be the bold and courageous Piper? Author Bowen whisks readers back to a time of lords and ladies and the hardships endured for home and hearth. An air of suspenseful mystery surrounds the pair and I was pleased at the amount of exceptional plot and characters thriving here. Looking forward to many more such tales from Ms. Bowen!

A Wish Times Three--Jean Van Arsdall--Kathleen McDowell is caring for her niece Siena while her sister and brother-in-law are out of town. A chance meeting with her niece's substitute teacher, Dr. Kevin Collins, sparks a chemistry she'd not expected and a round of more meetings that must be fate. As their relationship grows, Kathleen must learn to let go of a past love and use the power of wishes and the Blue Moon to get her there. Kevin's gentle persistence in pursuing Kathleen was heartwarming to read. His knowledge of the Blue Moon was a clever and resourceful insight into helping Kathleen move past the hurdle that was keeping her from living life to the fullest. A very sweet, very satisfying read from Ms. Van Arsdall!

Moondance--Kemberlee Shortland--Blanaid and Ronan have been good friends for quite some time now and as the forlorn beauty despairs of finding love, Ronan can no longer resist revealing his true feelings. Rearing from confusion, Blanaid knows not what to think now of the man that has always been here for her--as a friend. When she realizes her true feelings, will she be in time to prove to him how very worthy he really is? Love often resides right under our noses...if we know how to see it. Author Shortland writes a tale of love that is not so very far if we are just willing to reach for it. A wonderful story filled with pent-up passion and discovery of love.

Beneath the Velvet Blue Moon--Candace Gold--Nadine Stone meets Michael Greene during her family's annual lake vacation. It's the kind of young love filled with promise and all the means to see it through. Though they are inseparable, and make plans to meet each other again at the lake next year, a horrible tragedy forever changes Nadine and she loses contact with him. Years later, she remembers her promise made on a Blue Moon and though she knows it's time to finally move on, she can't resist one last lake trip. Will she discover there what her heart has been pining for? Ms. Gold reminds us of how hectic life can get, how it can tear us from our dreams if we let it. Told in first person, this is a timeless tale of love that will not be forgotten.

Devil in Spurs--DeborahAnne MacGillivray--Desdein Deshaunt is hell bent on vengeance and must see to the rescue of his brother. A pampered lord by day, and a devil of a rouge by night, he will use whatever means necessary, even his enemy's daughter, Lady Ashlyn. What he does not count on though is the lady's spirit and fortitude, nor her caring that will not let him give into his mad plans. Though he means to see his dastardly plans through, will he turn and face what she dares to reveal to him? Author MacGillivray is an enchanting weaver of breathless tales. Her versatility is certainly appreciated and readers will find more to enjoy in her other books such as "A Restless Knight" and "The Invasion of Falgannon Isle". Don't forget to check out her other short story, "Rider in the Storm", in the Blue Moon Magic anthology.

Highland Press brings together once again a beautiful collection of love found with the aid of the magical Blue Moon. Add it with its companion Blue Moon Magic and readers are all set for many wonderful hours of love, passion and heartwarming characters.

What happens when you wish upon a blue moon? Magical romance, that's what!

Read 15 heartwarming stories by 15 talented authors. Each story can stand on it's own and you can read them in any order. Pay special attention to the story "Blue Moon Magic" by the late Anne Marie Bradley. All of the stories in this anthology are great; my favorite is "When Mules Rush In" by Jacquie Rogers.

Even if you don't believe in the magic of the blue moon... once you read Blue Moon Enchantment you will find yourself wishing upon the blue moon, too.

This is a companion book to Blue Moon Magic. If you like this book you will love No Law Against Love, Faery Special Romances, and Cat O' Nine Tales. Many of the authors in these books have either been nominated for or won several awards, including ParaNormal Romance's P.E.A.R.L. Award.

***** This is the second book in the Blue Moon anthology series. The first, titled "Blue Moon Magic", was released only a few months ago and is still selling wildly. I predict that this companion book will do as well. Short stories are even harder to write than full length novels and this anthology has FIFTEEN magical tales by various authors. If you want some sweet dreams, read one of two of these stories just before bed. Terrific! *****

This book is a very useful source for storytellers. It provides a different look at the triad as well as a lot of good information about how to play members of DNA. I would recommend this only for storytellers and not players. I beleive almost all of the information is not covered in other books which is why I gave it 5 stars.

If you missed the planetary merits and flaws from the first edition player's guide, well they are now back. Along with that, there are other merits and flaws based on the Incarnae that inhabit those planets, as well as a wealth of new gifts, fetishes, and story hooks, including the fulfilling of the child of two metis prophecy. It continues to explain the cosmology of the Garou where Umbra: The Velvet Shadow left off, particularly the Aetherial Realm. It also explains how Garou view the stars and constellations. Overall, a very good addition to the Storyteller's repetoire for Werewolf, or even Mage.

Finally a guide to the Triat's REAL baddie!

The Book of the Weaver is an excellent resource for the Weaver in the World of Darkness. For once the White Wolf-folks have come off their behinds and written a book that actually compares Mage: The Ascension with Werewolf: The Apocalypse (for instance, a new background: Device!). A good run-down on the history of the Weaver is included (and, for once, from a fairly subjective point of view), as well as a guide to the different fractions that, knowingly or unknowingly, serve the Weaver, which will be most helpful. Some good points on shapechangers vs. technomagick helps put things in perspective, especially about implants. All in all, this book is a must for anyone who pretends to know anything about the Triat and technology in the Garou cosmology, i.e. any Werewolf Storyteller worth mentioning. This book is also recomended for Mage storytellers as well, though remember which game this book is meant for. When WWGS will print The Book of the Wyld is anyones guess, but one can only hope that it will be of the same prime quality that Book of the Weaver is of. This is by far one of the best Werewolf-sourcebooks in a long time.

This book opens your eyes...

Man they should have had this book a long time ago the Weaver is just too fascinating a spirit to ignore... While I dislike the villanous slant that they give the Weaver in this book. ( I am a major Glass Walker fan.) I really loved this book it was long overdue and just makes me wonder if they are going to do a book on the Wyld as well...?
