This is the continuation of Todd Wooten's excellent book, entitled "White Men Can't Hump (As Good As Black Men)". According to the author, the book's publishing company claimed that the book was too lengthy to be put into one book. Therefore, it had to be divided into two parts. So, this second and final volume is just as insanely brilliant as the first volume. Unlike the first volume (which is mainly about yesterday's events), this volume is mainly about what goes on today in regards to sex and race in America.

In this volume, the author discusses stereotypes such as the "Once You Go Black...", well... you know the rest! There are also explicit and lengthy observations of the "Size Doesn't Matter" stereotype. A stereotype that was created only to make people feel more comfortable with their "short" comings. The author also discusses the decline of music, the sexual differences in black music and white music (R&B/Rap & Pop/Rock), plus the sexual differences between white men and black men in pornography and most importantly, real life (which also includes the ideal women that white men and black men like). I felt that "The White Male Happy Meal" rant was very hilarious and brutally honest. Also, towards the ending of this book, Todd discusses stereotypes (physical, racial, intellectual) as well as how the American media and right-wing conservative radio (mis)treats the black male athlete based on their outspoken abilities (from Muhammad Ali to Barry Bonds) and how America prefers for black [men] to be "dumb and quiet". The author has the balls to call out women who falsely accuse black men of raping them and how America thrives off of this for entertainment. Did I mention how the author exposes the white male pedophile, attacks him and how this sick group of men get free passes in America? Regardless of how big of a reality this is, people still look at Michael Jackson and R. Kelly as the two biggest pedophiles in America, yet the white male pedophile gets to have his own organization called NAMBLA.

When Todd discusses what happened 40 years and 10 days after The Emmett Till Verdict (which happened to be The O.J. Simpson Verdict), and compared the two together, I knew this man was up to something dangerous. "Dangerous" simply because he is educated. And to many, this is threatening. How he describes and compares the two verdicts together is essential. This was enough to make many readers see America's justice system differently and how "The Devaluation Triangle" stays alive in America. He concludes this book with calling out black male conservatives who basically "forgot where they came from", political hypocrisies, class and how the "human divide" should be closed someday.

The only thing I disagree with was in the beginning of this volume, he states that the world would be a better place if women were in charge of things. I have my reasons for disagreeing with that, but I won't get into that right now. (Nearly) Everything in regards to race and sex is called out by this man, even the booming industry of sex pills and sexual stimulants (Viagra, etc...), why women undergo plastic surgery, etc... You cannot read one volume without reading the other volume, nonetheless. I extremely recommend this book to almost anybody, regardless of gender, race, age or residence. "White Men Can't Hump" is one of the greatest books of our time and I cannot stress that enough.

A powerful learning experience

Well! I just finished both volumes and found the book raw, bold and powerful. It also was humorous at times (I too, was laughing out loud at Volume II) but it taught me so much of what I didn't know.
I was fortunate enough to meet Todd and his brother Chris at Book Expo America and enjoyed our time together very much.
In my humble opinion, the book is extremely important for all of us. Todd's salient lesson is an uplifting one to black men and women, a wake-up call to those of the white race and a healing one to all in the human race. His "warnings" and discussion of the African's role in the slave trade in the beginning of Volume I pulls one right into the book and then his frank explanation of the core of resentment between races becomes clear. He then chronicles the brainwashing of the American public as well as what black men have had to endure including saddening lynching descriptions. He also comments on pop culture in a very succinct way. His comments are the opposite of wishy-washy!
I wrote a book about a white artist who fell in love with the Black culture and I'm happy to report that there are black angels and beautiful, elegant black women as well as dignified black men in his art. He saw their beauty back in the mid-twentieth century while racism was all around him.
Upon researching turn of the 20th century art for a new project, I came across newspapers from the 1890s-1900s which consistently would have an article about a "negro" attacking someone. Oddly enough, it could be a newspaper from a small town in Virginia and the article would be about an incident in Albuquerque - sometimes on the front page! I found it appalling and part of the brainwashing that Todd writes about.
This book will promote much lively discussion among all races, and it concludes with a positive message - something we all desperately need today. It's also perfect for a library book group - especially a multicultural one - providing the members aren't prudes. Congratulations to Todd and Chris! It was a great, informative read.

WMCH Volume II is as good as volume I. I think both books are a must read for everyone who cares about race relations. Volume I is a history lesson touching on history not taught in schools and events not covered by the media. Volume II takes a humorous look at race stereo types and leaves you saying "Hmmm he has appoint".
I feel like I was looking at life with blinders on. I think both books would be excellent for book clubs to read and discus and even used in schools (Under 18yr should be at the discretion of the parents). I loved both books and highly recommend both.

The author's knowlege and wisdom are being passed on to the reader with candor in a way that's easy to read, but sometimes hard to swallow. I only hope that this book becomes necessary reading for the youth of today (black and white alike) so that they may grow, and not allow themselves to become what society expects out of them.

I read White Men Can't Hump VOLUME I last month and I truly enjoyed every single page of it, but after reading VOLUME II I'm stunned there's no public discussion about either book. I enjoyed VOLUME II a little more because there's more humor and it appeals more to my generation (X). I caught myself laughing/screaming out loud countless times. VOLUME I is a history lesson that evokes raw emotion from the reader, and psychologically breaks you down and challenges you. If you can make it thru the chapter Lynching Psychology 101 without shedding a tear, you're not human. I can't wait to read both of them again, back-to-back, as intended. I consider both of these books social masterpieces because they expose what's at the heart of America's racial tensions like no other books I've ever read. This guy used the Republican formula of taking a person or legislation and putting a face or label on it. He re-defines racism and put a face on it, thus making it a tangible living and breathing element. He used the same spin tactics that Rove and the G.O.P. use, but he used it to describe America's ills. Terms like Limpbaugh Syndrome and Small-Poleons Complex are hilarious on the surface, but when he applies these terms that he created (in order to re-define certain kinds of bigotry) you'll find yourself enlightened and amazed. He spins all of the buffoonery about black male sexuality into a premise that is not very funny when he finishes. No Black Man has ever had the courage to say- If these things you've said about us for centuries are true, then we must be better in the bedroom than you. That may sound silly on the surface, but when that premise is posed to those who enjoy the bufoonery, it immediately changes the tone of the debate. Those well-known stereotypes are funny when portrayed negatively or comedically, but when he converts them to real-life bedroom activity it erases the smiles off of certain faces. If this book finds its way into the mainstream, a certain segment of our population will no longer find VH1's ridiculous Flavor of Love so humorous. I can't recommend these two books enough. Enlightenment meets Enjoyment!!!

Love this Novel series! I purchased this set for my mother's birthday, she is an avid reader and expects high quality writing. She loved them; her friends loved them and so do I! Full of historical informations, but not to the detriment of a great story!

I don't know how Judith Pella continues writing such excellent books one after another. This was another excellent book but I really missed Sergei. I know he died in the last one but I still couldn't get it through my head that he was gone!I was so attached to him throughout the series. This book focuses more on Sergei and Anna's sons, Andrei and Yuri. Andrei pursues his revolutionary ideals, while his older brother takes on the Federcenko name and becomes a respectable Russian doctor. Each of the characters face numerous obstacles in a country that is slowly crumbling to pieces beneath their feet. Another excellent read in the series. The story line never faulters and the characters never become dull or uninteresting. If you loved the first five in the series, then you will definitely love this one as well.

"The Russians" series is by far the best historical fiction I have ever read. Judith Pella(and Micheal Phillips in the earlier books) weave a wonderful story of life during the Russian Revolution. These books don't portray an idealistic view of life during this time, but, rather, a very realistic view of what people went through in Russia during the revolution. I reccomend this series to anybody who loves Russian history, romance, intrigue, or just a good cry because this series has it all!

Historical fiction lovers will love this!

The Russian series has been one of the best I've read. These are the kind of books that make learning history exciting! As you read this series, you become so involved in the charcters lives and feelings, it as if you have known them personally. But the authors have done extensive research to make the true history so accurate as the characters walk through life and we view it from their eyes. The struggles and hardships, as well as the joy and happiness, we feel it all. I love the way belief and faith in God,or the search to find it, is protrayed in the lives of each individual. This book is nearing the revolution and you see how family and friends may have had differing opinions and how they dealt with it. The whole series is excellent and keeps you riveted to the end!

I'm so glad I picked this romance up despite it's embarrassingly cliche' "mostly nude couple" cover. Set in Regency England-this passionate, thrilling and heartwarming tale of Maggie and Nicholas was an enthralling read from beginning to end. While I agree with another reviewer that the storyline may have been a bit predictable-the story is told in such a well written way that that doesn't matter.

I also enjoyed that the passionate scenes added, not detracted, from the love story. The secondary characters are fabulous in this story as well-a mark, in my opinion, of a quality romance. If you like highly romantic, adventuresome stories ala' vintage Johanna Lindsey and Catherine Coulter, then I think you will like this book.

Sensuality rating-8-pretty detailed and steamy.

5 stars-recommended.

I enjoyed it...

Description from back of book:

White Roses...Planted at the scene of every crime, the fragrant flowers were the trademark of a devious criminal. A jewel thief was stalking London, and Lord Nicholas Grey was certain the thief was his cousin and his enemy-Lord Edward Turner. Determined to capture the daring burglar, the Marques hunted his prey, but found himself distracted by a pair of rich brown eyes and an enchanting smile.

White Lies...Margaret Alston had turned to thievery to sow the seeds of vengeance. Determined to destroy the man who had tried to ruin her, The White Rose found her plans uprooted by her enemy's cousin-Lord Nicholas Grey. Stunned by the dashing aristocrat's kiss, Maggie found that in his arms she blossomed. And though she knew he would unearth her secrets if she gave him her heart, the pain of love's thorns could never outweigh its beauty.

* Although I didn't LOVE this book it was interesting enough to keep me going. This book was very predictable & I didn't find any mystery in it.

I picked up this book intrigued by the back cover synopsis, not familiar with the author, since I am an avid reader of Kathleen Woodwiss, Jill Barnett and especially Judith McNaught. This book was a great surprise! It held the same intelligence, humour and romance as my favorite authors. I loved the characters especially the heroine, whom I felt was not traditionally written. She seems to mirror the traits of a "male hero" while still being feminine and beautiful. I couldn't put the book down. It made me smile at the end. Looking forward to other books by Joyce Nickoles.

That Thinley Norbu Rinpoche has an idiosyncratic way of using English, that much will be agreed on by both his admirers and detractors. Some of my close friends (for what it's worth, long-time Buddhist practitioners like myself) find him hard to read, I know. However, in recent years I have come to appreciate especially this book very much.
His "Magic Dance" is delightfully poetic in style but here, in "White Sail," Rinpoche is almost stridently attempting to introduce we Westerners to that point of view which is the authentic Middle Way. Particularly he is steering us away from the extremes of both eternalism and nihilism, the latter most especially. Given that to understand the philosophical position of Buddhism fully one has to be a fully enlightened buddha, then those who aspire to follow the Buddhist path really should not take exception to being schooled in what that is and is not.
Some may stress that Buddhism transcends all points of view. This may be true but there is a path to be followed to attain that transcendence and for that journey a guide is required. Such a guide is Thinley Norbu Rinpoche, who does not fail to communicate the authentic (yes, again I say authentic) Buddhadharma.
Thankyou, Rinpoche, for this inspiring and instructive book.

While I'm not much of an intellectual I do take the study of Tibetan texts pretty seriously. What I especially like about this book is that Thinley Norbu Rinpoche has taken some of the most basic and at the same time most profound teachings of the Vajrayana and made them especially accessible to everyone. He begins the book's preface with a small quotation of Patrul Rinpoche;

"Those who intend to benefit others through holy teachings
Do not use elaborate terms and poetry.
The pure path is shown with the simple words of the laity.
That is the sublime method of the Bodhisattvas."

The book absolutely remains true to these words of advice. It can be picked up and read a bit at a time over days, months or years, as each chapter covers a different topic. It can be read sequentially or randomly and enjoyed. In some ways it reminds me a bit of the classic, "Cutting Through Spiritual Materialism" in that it is a book to be read again and again at intervals in ones life and I think it will remain fresh with each reading.

On a personal note, my copy lives in a zip-lock bag in my rucksack. I like having it around me to pick up and read a few lines whenever I have a free moment. It is like breathing fresh air and clarity.

Like Trungpa Rinpoche's Cutting Through Spiritual Materialism, White Sail's purpose seems to be the establishment of a clear and direct view from which those new to Buddhist practice can approach and gainfully engage Dharma. Pointing out typical obstacles and pitfalls, and appropriate paths, is a challenging tasks. Thinley Norbu Rinpoche succeeds admirably at defunking and debunking certain misunderstandings that have wound themselves around (for example) the use of Buddhist philosophy and deity practice. White Sail clarifies. Potent reading.

This is not a conventional "Dharma Book." Rinpoche's style is poetic, digressive, recursive. His refrains arise again and again in new keys and contexts, giving a texture some readers may find confusing or off-putting. I find it refreshing and precise. Also, Rinpoche does not seem interested in making compromises with anyone's incapacities. If goop is your game (that is, if you want someone to comfort you in a bedroll of boloney), this text is not for you. My only complaint is that it isn't 300 pages longer and that much broader in scope.

I earnestly hope this book finds a wide and receptive audience among English-language readers for many decades in the future. In one lifetime or another, I would love to meet the author and offer him my deepest gratitude for this teaching.

Homage to the herukas and dakinis, all true teachers, and the Wrathful Guru Takhyung Barwa!

I found this book to be very practical, open, insightful, but above all, honest. It was a hard first semester of Education classes for me, however, after reading this assigned book, I felt not so much inspired, but informed. There are students and situations Mrs. Landsman speaks of that education classes and textbooks can't show or teach you. There are experiences and emotions she shares that really tie the book together. Just because you aren't a teacher--or aren't just yet--for me, I personally felt as if I learned more just by considering myself: my own views, my own understanding, and especially just how many roles a teacher can play and what a significance each role holds. My best suggestion for this book: while reading, keep an open mind. You may be surprised at what you find within yourself.

This book is a must read for all teachers. As an African American teacher, I was impressed with her clear understanding of how she fits into the big picture. With the many students of color that are going through the K-12 system, teachers often are not forced to look at race issues. She avoides many of the common cliches, but is very direct in her view. She is also hopeful for the future, despite any negative experience that she may have had with a person of color. If you are a teacher in an area where you have even one student of color, READ THIS BOOK. If you have no students of color, READ THIS BOOK.

I read this book in one sitting, and was immediately drawn to the fluidity of Landsman's writing as well as her disarming honesty. She is aware of her responsibilities as author, narrator, and "character" in her story, and she uses her words and observations wisely. The students you meet within this book are vividly drawn and any reader, no matter their background, will be able to identify in some manner with the complex layers of identity each one has. Read this book not to discover the "answer" to race relations in the United States, but to peel back your own layers and uncover what has been constructed and what is real.

Finally! A book that deals with race relations honestly

This is a raw and heartfelt book that turns over some rocks en route to the truth. This tells the story of a white teacher, someone who grew up with certain priveleges, and how this person is forever linked to the world of a black man in America. Heartfelt stories of racism, prejudice, and also hopeful, courageous and positive stories as so many of these young blacks overcome these obstacles and lead productive lives. This is a tremendous book for our time that deals with race and especially important to those of us who may not understand or appreciate how the average black person in America lives and what he/she is forced to go through in America.

"WHITE WOLF", my favorite of Susan Edwards popular White series, pulled at my heart strings. Susan has a great flare for bringing her characters vividly alive so you feel a part of the story. The rugged Oregon trail had you sweating and your feet hurting as you walk behind the wagons. Yet, the picturesque landscape catches your breath. Jessie, my favorite character, had me chuckling at her antics as she imitated a boy. This character gave a twist to a romance out of the ordinary. I highly recommend Ms. Edward's "White Series", a reading experience you'll thoroughly enjoy.

Jessica and her three brothers, James, Jordon, and Jeremy are headed for a new life in Oregon. Only the new wagon master, White Wolf, has a rule against single women in his wagon train. A twist of fate sends Jessica along with her brothers anyway, dressed as a boy. White Wolf is walking two roads in life, not knowing which one he belongs too. He had been sent back east to a white man's school as a child, where he was beaten for minor transgressions. I wished Ms. Edwards wrote more about his time at the school. Due to a betrayal of a woman heading for Oregon, White Wolf will not tolerate single women on the train. The character's in the story were very interesting and you meet many people for her future books. One of my favorite characters is Jordon's wife, Coralie, I was impressed with the way Ms. Edwards brought around her change without making it too drastic. Jessica has a firy temper, but fortunatly it does not lead her to jump to too many conclusion. In all I found this a very interesting novel though I wished to learn more about White Wolf's past while reading it. Still, this was a wonderfully, sweet book.

Tomboy Jessie Jones is furious with her three brothers. They had all been planning to go West for a long time, and then all of a sudden, they break the news to her that she can't go! That they're willing to split up the family because a half-breed Indian wagon master doesn't allow single women in his wagon train. But when she confronts White Wolf, she's mistaken for a boy, and finds out, that if she lies, that she can go after all!

Wolf knows that the youngest Jones boy is a trouble maker without a doubt. So he gives Jessie the most tiring tasks so he'll be too exhausted to get into mischief. But when he finds out he's really a she, he get even. And all the while, the two of them are falling in love. But before they can have a life together they need to figure out what Wolf's duty is to his tribe.

This was the best book in the whole series. I loved Jessie. She was the strongest heroine without being too stubborn and pushy. And Wolf was your star wounded hero. Gruff and stubborn on the outside, but a heart of gold on the inside. This book was so well written. The secondary characters, who was everyone in the wagon train, were excellent editions to this story, and the relationship between Jessie and the youngest brother Jeremy, was so sweet. I almost couldn't wait for his story, White Dove, who ends up being Wolf's youngest sister. James, the oldest, has his own story too, White Nights. You can't help but love the Jones'. Also, when they get together with White Wind and Golden Eagle, Wolf's parents, and the rest of the family, you know it's got to be wonderful.

I thought this book covered some very practical ideas. A lot of the stories found in the book were a bit surprising. He truly made a turn around with some of these kids. He also admits that not everything worked.

At times I found myself getting a little caught up with his sense of an ego lingering through the pages. I almost felt as if there was a bit of bragging going on. Although I think he is a man who deserves to boast since he sacrificed a lot of time and money to help others, not mention often putting his life at risk for his kids.

I gained a couple of good ideas about how to get kids inspired to do things, to build up courage to do the right thing, to ask more of parents, and most of all to emphasize strong morals and values. I'm not talking about religious morals, he vaguely mentions them, I'm talking about being a good person and fighting for justice in your daily life.
He talked about sacrifice, work ethic, respect, integrity. I even learned some things about these values myself. It's what this nation educational system is lacking and I'm glad he brought up!

One thing I found faulty with his system: he had the option of kicking kids out of his schools if they chose not to comply with his standards. That is one very significant option teachers and parents usually don't have.

However, he emphasized parents roles in their children's lives. I would definitely recommend this to parents, because he acknowledges that more often than not bad behavior is caused by a weak structure at home, reading this would only help. He really brings these kids back from the dead as well as some families in the process. I'm glad someone finally acknowledged the growing problem of education systems: the lack of care or concern for these kids BEYOND the classroom.

Every school district administrator should read this.

Mr. White doesn't claim to have a system to cure all of the schools' ills but he certainly has a good start. He also makes the statement that today's kids aren't any worse than we were but just the boundaries aren't as well defined as we had back in the 50's and 60's.

Mr. White does admit to his failures, not every one has coming through his doors went out a better human being but many are able to shop where they want and get ahead instead of stuck in the same dependency cycle.

His rules are simple. He outlines them in the book and how he applies them. He told a story on the radio about a wealthy parent pulling her child out of an expensive private school to attend his charter school. The usual method of admission to his school, Mr. White jokes, is 2 felony convictions. The wealthy parent was impressed with how the kids behaved and were learning much more than at the expensive private school.

Now there is a caveat here, Mr. White's school is only 30 to 40 students with himself, a probation officer, and another teacher in a tough part of town. The teachers and the students spend the whole school day together talking about personal issues as well as the educational topics.

Mr. White has taught in regular schools and admits he has as many non-contract renewals as awards, so everything has not been a bed of roses. He says the biggest key is the administration backing up the teachers and principals. The parents need to talk with the teachers - so this isn't just a teacher working against the system but creating a support system for the students.

There's tendency as a veteran teacher of twenty-five years to think I have all the answers about how to run an effective classroom. White's Rules is a reminder that what is basic in life is also basic in the classroom. The classroom must provide more than academic instruction; it must be a place where teachers establish the primary values and morals that their students need to survive in the world outside the classroom. This book shows how teachers can demand bedrock solid values of their students and reap the rewards of mutual respect that such values create. White's Rules is not just a book for inner city teachers and their "incorrigibles" it is also a book for teachers like me in the suburbs with diverse middle class kids. The combination of strict consistent discipline and unconditional love is a formula that works. I recommend this book to anyone looking to find what's essential and what works in the classroom today.

Teaching morals is just as important as teaching science, math, hisory, etc

I agree with the many points that White makes. Kids will naturally test limits and so clearly defined limits with significant consequences are necessary. But while enforcing rules that students must be punctual, not swear, and not dress like a gangster are worthwhile, the later half of the book is the most important. Teachers should not simply teach kids academics, they also need to teach morals, how to live right, to care for others, and to make a difference. While his rules might not be able to be enforced so strictly everywhere, I think they can be modified and adapated for most schools and other similar organizations. The book is motivational and encouraging, I recommend it to parents, educators, and anyone who works with groups of adolescents.

Inspirational comments (taken from his speeches and writings) from Pope John Paul II on subjects including suffering, women, work, peace, faith, prayer, and much more. Whatever the subject, John Paul's words convey a deep respect and love for all people and an intense desire for peace. The excerpts range from a few sentences to a couple paragraphs, but almost every one contains at least one idea worth serious reflection. Considering how much John Paul has experienced of the world and his super-wide ranging travels, his views are definitely not "ivory tower", and that really comes across in his common sense and practical attitude. Any reader, regardless of religious background, could learn something from this book.

"The Wisdom of John Paul II" is a collection of sayings of His Holiness. Topically organized into seventeen sections, it distills true gems from his voluminous writings and public addresses.

From these distilled gems the reader can glean some of the themes of John Paul's teachings. One such theme is mystery. Whereas modern man always seeks to know and understand, John Paul finds mystery in man, mystery in God, mystery in man's relationship to God.

Another theme of John Paul II is that Christ is at the center of all human existence. Whatever the issue, John Paul finds the answer in Christ. Relations between people must be based on man's inherent, God-given dignity. Man's ultimate destiny is found in uniting himself to Christ.

Ultimately, the value of this book comes, not from the answers it provides, but the questions it gently leads us to ask. Who am I? Why am I here? Where did I come from? Where am I going? When a person starts asking these questions, he begins to think differently, to act differently, to be different. Pick up and read, think, and pray.

An insightful and inspiring gem

Nick Bakalar and Richard Balkin have scoured numerous encyclicals, speeches, and letters to assemble this wonderful treasury of Pope John Paul II's thoughts on many questions facing today's society. The result is a wealth of wisdom and insight from the most seen man in the world. This isn't a book of answers to life's vital questions; rather, it offers the Pope's and the Church's view on such issues and asks us to question our attitudes and feelings. The topics are far-ranging, both contemporary and timeless. Matters of love, family, death, women, work, and youth are addressed as well as subjects such as human rights and progress and the modern world. Bakalar and Balkin's greatest strength in composing this book is the wide spectrum they've selected from. These issues are universal, and you will find something that speaks to you. You'll probably discover much more.

"The Wisdom of John Paul II" is not only a great addition to your inspirational or religious library; it's also a great addition to any library. I suggest giving this book as a gift, especially if you're looking for something meaningful that can be read over and over (instead of being used as a dust-collector). Non-Catholics and even non-religious will find the Pope's words inspiring, and his message of universal love can be understood and appreciated by all. He does not viciously attack groups in conflict with Church teachings but graciously approaches controversy as does a leader of the faith. Wherever he acts as an apologetic, he does so with the patience and firmness that has guided the Church through more than two decades.

This book, in part, acts as an intimate autobiography as it his diary of his times and how he has confronted the Church and society he has been entrusted. What makes this papal journal stand out from the rest though is that it is more than a portrait of the Pope or a collection of his quotes. His words represent one man's thoughts, but it also gives us a strong picture of his vision for the Catholic Church of the new millennium. Every issue is one that immediately concerns contemporary society, and that makes this book such an enjoyable and necessary read.

I purchased the hard cover version of this book when it first came out. I also later purchased the audio cassettes. I have listened to them at least 3 times. This is the Gospel applied for our age. The Pope's quotes are arranged by topic and are very well researched and presented.

Marriage, Family, Children, War, Poverty, are some of the topics covered. This is a spectacular and somewhat lengthy collection of the former Pope's great quotes.

Highly recommended on audio and also in written forms.

This is a book that every catholic should read !.

The Wisdom of John Paul II describes the Pope's innermost thoughts on subjects such as abortion, education, war, religion, and love. The book is well-written and interesting as well because it's made of quotes from speeches made by the Holy Father. The Pope's views on certain issues have often been controversial, but certainly there's a lot of wisdom in his words.

This is a copy of a cook book I aquired in Jr High (Middle School) This copy is for my daughter who is constantly borrowing mine.
This is a excellent cook book. It has many recipies that are unusual, such as tomato soup cake, and saurkraut cake (a good moist chocolate cake). It also has recipes that have become traditional to my family The ice water cakes and the dinner rolls. The author explains methods well. The recipes are easy to follow.

An Excellent Cookbook

I have had this cookbook since the '70's and use it a lot. All of the recipes are very good. Dolores Casella is a wonderful cook and has put together many usable recipes in her cookbooks. I have not had one recipe fail from this cookbook. It's too bad it is not still in print. I bought used copies for both of my daughters, as it is just such a great cookbook.

The book I am reviewing here is actually the 1968 hard back edition. This book, including he paper back edition which is featured here i.e. 1974, is no longer in print. This, in my opinion, is almost a crime. Dolores Casella is simply a fine cook, one of the best, and she has put together a collection of baking recipes in this volume that would be difficult to equal. Please note though, these recipes are not the quick fix, dinner in 60 seconds or less variety. These are tried and true dishes, and for the most part are "made from scratch." This work was written in the 1960s and the baked goods and techniques reflect this and that era.

A World of Baking is not what I would classify as a "coffee table" cook book. There are no pretty pictures, no flashy dishes made by professional chiefs loaded with ingredients, which, while exotic, simply are either not available, nor completely unnecessary. This is a plain cook book, black ink on white paper and of normal size. There are hundreds of recopies offered, each and everyone rather unique and all are "do-able." The directions are extremely easy to follow and the author has sprinkled bits and pieces of historical data here and there in a rather conversational mode. You know what you are eating, why you are eating it, and often times, where it came from.

Another reviewer has stated they feel that this one is one of the top ten in their extensive collection of cook books. I would have to agree with this. If you truly love cooking, like cooking healthy foods that are fun to make, and even more enjoyable to eat, then this one is for you. If you can lay your hands on a copy, grab it. I will promise you, like my wife and I, you will turn to it over and over again when baking time comes around.

Superb Baking!

It's a shame that these books are no longer in print. Dolores Casella is one of the best. I would rate her right along with James Beard and Julia Child.

I stumbled on this gem when my friend's landlord left it behind in the house he was renting. Lucky for me, the landlord cared little for cooking and told me I could have the book. I can't praise it enough - despite having been written in the 1960s, when most of America seemed to be into slapping together a few heavily processed ingredients (I call it "Campbell's Soup cooking"), this book is strikingly original, broad-ranging, and (in the case of many of the bread recipes), even healthy. I never tire of browsing it for unique cakes that use everything from rose petals to saurkraut. The author really did her research, and the book includes a lot of helpful tips and interesting historical snippets. I own about 250 cookbooks. If I had to cull my collection to 10, this one would make the cut.

Deftly compiled and professionally edited by James Treat (Associate Professor of American Indian Studies, University of Illinois), Writing The Cross Culture: Native Fiction On The White Man's Religion is a provocative and somewhat iconoclastic anthology of writings based upon the Native American cultural transformation and adaptations of the beliefs and practices of the Christian faith. Featuring works ranging from satire to philosophy, Writing The Cross Culture presents a creative collective interpretation of the significant occurrences in the Native American culture as impacted by Christianity. Writing The Cross Culture is very strongly recommended to students of Native American history and literature as a quite unique perspective on an often neglected aspect of contemporary Native American culture.
