When you first lift, or attempt to lift this book, you know right off you got your money's worth!

This is now my prize Titanic book, the only one close to it is "Anatomy of the Titanic" by Tom McCluskie. But this book blows that one out of the water, and the sheer amount of construction pictures and diagrams are outright insanity. My favorite aspect of Titanic and her sisters is the construction of the ships, and this book caters to people like me in a grand way!

The most interesting Titanic book I've gotten in a LONG time. Lit up my facsination all over again. Get it. NOW!

A Rivet Counter's Delight

Among Titanic buffs, a "rivet counter" is a person whose primary interests in the Titanic lie in the direction of the physical details of the great ship rather than with her passengers or the drama of her last voyage.

"Titanic: The Ship Magnificent" is an unmatched resource about the physical ship. Printed on glossy stock with hundreds of diagrams and photographs (some from Titanic herself, others from her sister ship, Olympic, and other vessels of the era) the two massive volumes (Volume One deals with design and construction, Volume Two with interior decoration) cover virtually every imaginable aspect, from fabrication techniques used in constructing the hull to the various designs of First Class water closets (and china patterns).

I have a goodly number of "Titanic" books and have never seen anything that could remotely rival this set for portraying the physical reality of the ship. Obviously, this is not a work for the general or casual reader, or even a good overall account of the ship's fatal voyage, but any rivetcounter (or anyone with just a touch of that disease) would find these books endlessly fascinating.

Oh, and how many rivets? About three million were used to construct the Titanic's hull and superstructure.

If, like me, you like to know every thing about the Titanic. If you are fascinated about this great ship, you have to own these two really magnificiant books. Many pictures, I hadn`t seen before.. Although I already have many books about that great ship, I have learned many new things about her. I do not regret that I add these two wonderful books to my Titanic books`collection and I recommand that you buy them if you are a truly fan of the Titanc ; More than ordinary books, these books are pieces of collection.

Belongs in every serious Titanic collectors library.

I have previously raved about Volume II in this series (which came out before Volume 1) and I will do so again here. This is meticulously researched and photo/illustration rich. This volume covers the building and hardware fitting out of the TItanic. Most of the illustrations come from her sister ship Olympic, but there are also many rare photos and illustrations here directly from the Titanic as well. From bulkheads to Marconi machinery, it is all here. Note that this does NOT include any of the "Titanic Story" -- this is pure, factual, blue-print type material about the ship itself, not it's sinking, its passengers, nor its crossing. I have been pouring over both of these volumes now for weeks, and just love them.

The pictures in this book are absolutely great. They are mainly portraits, however I find it amazing how the faces really tell stories. As you may have noticed the book is big, and you will have much material to look at. There are also many text explanations which complete the whole. I must say that viewing this book really felt like a journey to Africa.

THE PHOTOGRAPHY HERE IS BEAUTIFUL...THE FACES OF EACH PERSON ARE PHOTOGRAPHED UP CLOSE AND THE EMOTION OF THE PEOPLE COMES ALIVE IN THE EYES, THE TRIBAL COLORS ON THE FACES, AND THE WRITTEN EXPLINATION OF EACH PHOTO. THE BOOK WITH THE PEOPLE IN IT ARE LOOKING BACK AT YOU AS IF YOU ARE BEING OBSERVED AND NOT THEM....................EXCELLENT IN ALL WAYS.

This is a beatifully written book for any anthropologist.
Gianni travelled to some of the most remote detestinations in Africa where people are so removed from modenisation they are the closest we can see to truely archaic people. The cultural images expressed in this book is an eye opening exsperience. And the photography IS ABOSULTLY AMAZING.
Mine came with a DVD which was physical footage of the tribes men.

Truely a FORGOTTEN africa........Vanishing Africa. Thanks you Gianni

The photographs are everything, showing African villagers much as they have lived for the past century. This is not modern Africa, but its last remaining tribal cultures completely tied to the rhythms and livelihood of stoop farming, animal husbandry, and tribal warfare. The people are often beautiful, their adornments alternately colorful and extreme (those lip disks make me wince).

At the time of this review, the Omo valley, in which these tribes are located, is threatened by flooding; this acts as a commentary on the reality of these peoples' lives. It is not idyllic or problem-free; also noted is the presence of Kalashnikov automatic rifles in at least one tribe. That this should be the only visible presence of modernity in this primitive locale, is a sobering comment upon what "progress" has brought to "backward" people.

Many of the photographs are close-ups of individual faces and of small groups. The book is entirely desirable for this alone. Soon, these scenes will only exist in a book, as the final transition to contemporary life inevitably presses itself upon these tribes.

I now own two copies of this book, one for me and one to loan to friends and family. This book is in no measure short of a miracle. Putting aside learning disabilities and her youth, Ms. Abeel is a gifted poet and author of exceptional depth. That this began as a middle school writing assignment by a child struggling to survive in an insensitive world makes it a tribute to the difference one or two "seeing" people can make. This book is a must for anyone interested in well expressed observation of the rich tapestry of life. --Dave

Though this book is recommended for kids, its greatest value is for anyone, adult or child, who is learning disabled. The author, a teenager at the time of writing, was learning to deal with her severe learning disability-dyscalculia- a total inability to deal with numbers. It is evident from reading her poems that what she lacks in arithmetic abilities is more than compensated for by her exceptional way with words and images. The fact that she was only 15 or so when she wrote the poems is even more astounding. a must for anyone who has a learning disability or knows someone who has one. This is one book that should be catalogued under learning disabilities and education!

I have been looking for a poetry book to include in my graduate studies project for a children's literature course. I've spent many hours trying to find the right book with the right message for the right audience. This book fits right in with the theme: perseverance. I am astounded by the giftedness of this writer and the beauty of the watercolors from a remarkable illustrator. I think all my students will be able to relate in some way and find consolation in realizing that success is a matter of tapping into one's gifts. I am pleased on discovering the thoughtful and enlightening personal entries from Samantha, her mother and teacher at the end. What a wonderful story to share!!!

This poetry book by a thirteen year old learning disabled child opens the doors for all of us as writers and readers. It allows both children and adults to recognize their own "personal disability", maybe something no one sees, and realize that all are conquerable! The prologue and epilogue include Samantha speaking, her parents, and her english teacher...these three points of view bring an in depth view of the "gift within us all" just waiting to be recognized and nurtured. This is a must read for anyone who touches the lives of children!

White Canvas delightfully forces the reader to think hard about life, and about living it to its fullest extent. It is indeed never too late to fulfill ones hopes and dreams.

One can do endless things during retirement. In fact, if one plans his or her retirement well it could mean the begining of a new life rather than life coming to an end. Well done Ned Mansour on this captivating novel.

I think the book will surprise a lot of peoole. The style of writing is interesting in that it gives several different perspectives for us to consider. It is an easy read and very very entertaining but I found myself reflecting on the book's messages long after I finished it, which I think the author cleverly engineered. He clearly strongly believes that life is what you make of it. If you are not happy do something about it and do it now. He also believes that our focal point on life should be forward not backward no matter what our age is. I have passed this book on to my children. I am anxious to see what they come away with.

Through various humorous situations, Ned tells a great story about the trials and tribulations of the aged, as well as gives a great message of not leaving issues unsettled.

Like the author's previous works this novel is in the format of a descriptive narrative. It may be a surprise to some yet, I welcomed the uniqueness that this written format brings. I am impressed with the effort the author has made. This saga carries a lot of sensibility and subtle intensity. While reading WhiteChocolate I wanted to be Xavier then I wanted to be Dominique. Seriously, should this book become a movie I would like to be casted as either guy. I really appreciated how the author developed each character; from beginning to end I felt they had matured from the various revelations realized. As a person of color this novel provided a truth that I do not read about often and that is how these young college students appreciated the diligent work of those who came before them. They have the mind-set that they will need to ready themselves for an internationally competitive world and they respect the times that their parents, grandparents, etc endured. I am very excited about this book because I can see that the author, Henrietta Elmore-Smith writes in a style all her own and I am ready for the next one.

This story should go from book pages to the silver screen. It is very serious, funny, and touching. The main character has so many challenges and she is so young. I realize that this novel is listed as "fiction" but the scenes appear real. Falling in love and being in love is an experience, but having it happen again and from a direction you would never expect is an emotional rush. I had to put the world on hold to finish this masterpiece. This is a reading experience I needed. BRAVO !

A very unique storyline. It has a mild beginning providing actual like settings of a college girl experiencing an average college campus life. And then it steps up becoming more than that. The protagonist is from New York and chose to attend college in the south. Her brother is a medical school student and he is so cool and runs a close second to holding his own portraying a stronge sense of character and balance; but I must admit he is casual when it comes to his main squeeze. She's in to him but he's just there; like just Physically there, or maybe his girl, Angel is just too romantic, if there is such a thing. The author presents situations that stimulate your impressions of what you would like or presume to happen but then you read that the outcome is completely different. This author is very clever with her style and if this book becomes a movie-I will definitely be there-Front Row and Center. The author is right, "no matter what the flavor". SHE HAS GOT MY ATTENTION !!!

WhiteChocolate is my latest "carry along book". I must admit it took me a while to determine the direction the author was going with the story and this is not a complaint-the book is a "Page Turner". My first impression was that her (Pontia's) brother Xavier was the protagonist because he is portrayed as someone you could easily idolize. He has integrity, good looks with high intelligence; he is given dominion through much of the plot(s)so I thought. You cannot scan this novel and obtain the crux of it. This work is for people who want to separate and escape to another realm of enlightenment and true inspiration. I appreciate the author's fluid style. The scenes tell of a new liberating way of thinking and living. And the real protagonist toys with experiencing romance from a different angle. I am impressed with the author's technique in creating a college life that could actually be happening to a young man or lady at this very moment on a college campus in the south. The author should receive more than just Five (5) Stars. Henrietta Elmore-Smith give us more?

Business the Zen way: sharper than you think

Building on Buddhist parables and using sources as diverse as St. Augustine and Alice in Wonderland, author Steven Heine offers a little book with big ideas, such as applying the Zen values of detachment and resilience to workplace dynamics. He tells stories to illustrate intricate, thoughtful ways to assess and react to various business scenarios and disputes. Then, with a relatively low dose of philosophical double-speak and, perhaps, a few too many oblique Eastern-sounding aphorisms, he encourages you to take the high ground. We recommend this illuminating guide to those of a philosophical or spiritual bent. Heine's knowledgeable explanation of the practical application of Zen ideas in business will help you remain philosophical in the face of workplace triumphs, puzzles or setbacks. While it is hard to see the Buddha inside a bull-headed rival, it may help to try.

Among the many topics touched in this fascinating book there is one that everyone who is in the business world will immediately noticed: The Structure and The Anti-Structure. Steven Heine explains in detail how to become part of the structure of a company and even more importantly he details how to "break-through" the structure and make it work for one's benefits.

In my personal case I must thank Dr. Heine for the words of wisdom that allowed me to get through the toughest interview that I've ever had. Following the guidelines of the book I put all my attention in the way the interview was structuring itself and once I was able to grasp the essence of what my future manager was looking for, I decide to break-through the structure and I gave a short but sincere and strong answer following the principles explained in this book and as of right now I'm the right hand of one of the Assistant Vice-Presidents of the company for which I work

Review Date: 2005-06-09
Go to any weekend Buddhist retreat, and during open discussions on the application of the Dharma, the conversation will inevitably turn to the workplace - on how to respond to difficult occupational situations and adversarial fellow employees. White Collar Zen is a book concerned with this all too common form of suffering. It is an insightful, and very practical guide for applying the transcendent wisdom of Zen to the everyday challenges of making a living. Heine's advise is based on the skillful application of Zen's "Great Doubt," so that we can transform the ordinary working world into a realm of opportunity for enlightened action. This is accomplished by understanding our relationships in the workplace as encounters, rather than conflicts, akin to the encounters recorded in Zen Koans, and charged with all the possibilities of awakening. The steps for taking this approach are presented in very clear and accessible language, and there are a number of useful examples given to illustrate how the method can be applied in real situations. A valuable book for these times, White Collar Zen teaches us how Great Doubt can be effectively used at work, so that the sword that kills may also give life and workplace foxes may, in the end, be revealed as Buddhas.

In spite of all of the drama this young woman went through, she accomplished her dreams. I loved this book - especially what she said about life being like a puzzle and how we need to just take all of the pieces as they come and we will see the complete picture over time. Her life was full of heartbreak and struggle, but it appears to me that the seeds of wisdom planted by her grandmother caused her to pick herself up and brush off and get going no matter what. I could hear the love for her daughther and even for her husband. I loved her honesty about every aspect of her life including her naive perspective in her early college days. The psychologist in me couldn't help wonder why she was not as honest about her contribution to the strain in her marriage at the very end, but I do like the way she told her story overall. I would highly recommend this book after reading her first book, of course.

Ms. Beals has an extraordinary way of expressing herself. She brought out so many emotions in me. I would love to be able to personally write to her - she has truly brought me to a new level of strength. Reading her book has taught me that keeping your faith in God will ultimately show you that all the blessings he has given you should not be taken for granted.

Melba Pattillo Beals' journey through a time of prejudice shows a woman's courage. After trying, to integrate into an all white high school and being harassed by the K.K.K. Melba Beals is relocated by the NAACP. She starts her new life in California, a much different environment than the one she left behind in Arkansas. Melba hits a turning point in her life as she forgets about her studies and things to try to fit in. This non-fictional story drives your emotions as it talks of how cruel our world can be. It also showed how it only takes one person to make a difference. This truly inspirational piece will leave you screaming for justice.

"We were concerned about much more than breathing- we were trying to save our lives- racing from room to room, slamming our windows shut and locking them as fast as we could." Melba Patillo Beals writes the story of her life, and what she had to go through everyday, as a result of her being one of the strong teenagers that integrated Central high in the year 1957. This book, the sequal to Warriors Dont Cry, makes you feel the pain, suffering, and hurt that Melba experienced living as a young african american in Little Rock Arkansa. The book was not all about the tough times she had, but also about the good times that her and her family shared, the things she accomlpished, and how she got to where she is know. In the book, Melba is living with her young brother Conrad, her grandma India, and her mother Loise, where she is trying to graduate high school, and then hopefully leave her small town of Arkansa. The book is very touching and I got emotional reading it, as i did when i read her first book. A quote that made me want to keep reading was in the beggining of the book, when she writes in her diary"Oh, god, please help me find my way. I don't want to disappoint anyone. Don't I deserve to have a senior year? Can't we have intergration but not have me participate? This is such a big problem, only you can figure it out. Thy will be done. Please give me courage." This passage showed her courage, and i wanted to keep on reading to see what she would do.Melba travels to San francisco were she meets with the Santa Rosa NAACP, and realizes that the hatred that she once thought all the whites had, was not true, and that she would begin a new life. She dealt with growing up with a white family, getting married, having children, and having her husband leave her. Overall this was a good book, and i enjoyed it. If it could have been different i wish it would have been a bit shorter, and more descriptive about her life as an adult.I recoment this book to others, and suggest it, for a book to read on a rainy day. Enjoy reading it, and check out her other book.

I really got alot out of this book. It explained alot about why my life had not been going the way I thought it should be.
Sometimes people can drain us of our energy by merely being around them. Even people that live far away have the ability to zap us of our vitality. Diane's book gives you ways and means to keep away those energy vampires. It also addresses thoughts about ghosts and other entities. Lots of information. One of the better books I have purchased on psychic protection. I would highly recommend it.

Don't miss this one! Excellent book!

I have read quite a few books on Psychic Protection and this is one of the VERY best! Diane Ahlquist writes in an engaging and easily readable style and offers a wealth of information to the reader. Hers is a practical book filled with information on HOW one can be attacked psychically - and WHAT to do if you ARE under attack. She offers many avenues to fend off negativity and keep your environment pest-free. This book is a 'must read' for ANYONE dealing with the metaphysical community!

A practical guide for everyone...

I highly recommed this book both for everyone interested in this field!!!
Whether you are new or experienced in this field - everyone has something to gain from it.
It covers a vast amount of daily events where you might need quick and easy protection to more "advanced" forms like: dealing with "ghosts", evil, possessions etc.
It is a book very well written by an experienced psychic - easy to follow & easy to learn.
It explains what needs to be explained and has a good "Glossary" for those that are not familiar with the terminology.
Last but not least it is equipped with Warnings for certain "methods" - that you definetely should not deal with unless you have experienced guidance.
The book is aimed to Defend with love in your heart!
If I could rate it with six stars I would...

If you're a neophyte to this subject, this book is for you. If not, there are still some things you can learn from the author. Keep an open mind, and you will find much useful information about subjects that are part of Wicca and other belief systems. To understand the fundamentals behind what is mentioned, take an undergraduate anthropology of religion course, something that will show beliefs and practices from other cultures as well - including indigenous ones. Also, do not neglect Marion Zimmer Bradley's *Lady of Avalon* for additional ideas in this vein. When dealing with intolerance, persecution and social ostracism, for instance, it is wise to be as protected as possible.

Good book for learning techniques

I had this book and lost it, then immediatly bought another copy. Informative, and good guides for practices. Recomend to all of those who feel "drained" after talking to people, or if you feel you are being attacked.

I read the entire book on a one-day trip from west to east coast. Never have I read a novel that held my attention like this one, while teaching me more than I have ever known about the Black and White subcultures of Mississippi in the last century. You can't help but learn as the book sweeps you along from one authentic experience to another. You live it and come away with a profound understanding of conditions and actions within and between the Black and White sides. The main character, at the beginning an eleven year old White boy, lives these things, as the author no doubt did. The book is well worth reading if for the love story alone. You will want to keep this one in your personal library. A cracking good read - don't let it pass!

A riveting page-turning novel that every American, black, white, and other, should read. This book will place you deep in both the white and black subcultures of rural south Mississippi at mid-twentieth century, one of the most turbulent periods of the nation's history. A gripping new perspective on the social revolution in the United States and the Viet Nam War, and how the two linked to profoundly mark white and black youth of this place and time. The main character depicts a segment of American society that has, until this book was published, been unrecognized as a real victem of the time. Triumph and tragedy, race and violence, promise and betrayal, love and heartbreak - this book will educate you. Read it! You'll be glad you did.

Having not grown up in the USA culture, racism has always been perplexing to me.
This deeply personal and insightful novel is not only educational and entertaining,
but grips the heart and soul of one who reads it. As the author "lives" the story,
one is brought to a better understanding of the dynamics of our race-conflicted country.
A Must-Read!
