I loved this comic from start to finish. The story is brilliant the artwork unbelievable. It is amazing how well drawn it is. The artwork tells the story almost completely without words. The reviews are right on! All 5's!

A DEEP, MOVING, WELL-WRITTEN WORK OF ART!

This is the FIRST graphic novel to be published for the Kindle, and if BIRTH is any indication of what's to come in portable e-comics, then great things await!!!

This story of two alien societies is the prequel that sets the stage for the Novo: The Birth of Novo, from what I've read. I'll be buying Novo: The Birth of Novo in the very near future.

The story moves at a steady, even pace, not rushed or slow, and the artwork is stunning. I've written two ebooks on the subject of Kindle graphics (Graphics on the Kindle (Book 1 of the "Graphics on the Kindle" Series) and Formatting Comics for the Kindle (Book 2 of the "Graphics on the Kindle" Series). I've worked with MANY different artists in the past few months helping them improve their images on the Kindle, and I have to stay that this is the BEST artwork I've ever seen on this device.

ALTERNA COMICS should take a bow for taking the chance to be the FIRST graphic novel available on the Kindle, and for releasing such a well-done publication as the first of their many future Kindle ebooks. Their example should inspire and motivate other indie comic creators to follow suit and explore this emerging method of publication and delivery.

I ordered this book based on the author's artwork he had done in another book. This book sat on my shelf for a couple of weeks before I finally go to it... this should have been at the top of my to read list.

This book doesn't contain a lot of dialogue and relies heavily on the artwork to tell the story, and it does so beautifully. A hint of sci-fi element but a definite parallel to the human race and how we treat each other. Blaming one another for our own faults and never taking responsibility.

I cannot recommend this book enough.

I'm ordering the sequel, 'Novo', today and I'll write a review for that one later.

The next great comic auteur has arrived!

The ultimate cautionary anti-war fable, blending fantasy and sci-fi elements into something wholly its own. Bracco's art is jaw-dropping eye-candy, and the story is a fantastic mesh of text and visuals. This is a tale made to be a comic - it'd be extraordinarily expensive as a film, and perhaps overly didactic as pure text, but as the graphic novel BIRTH, it's pitch-perfect. It's got style, atmosphere and ambiance to spare. And it's very intelligent and imaginatively executed. A book worth your time and money, no doubt whatsoever.

FYI - while BIRTH is entirely stand-alone, it also serves as the prequel/prologue to the new ongoing grpahic novel series Novo Volume 1: The Birth of Novo, which is also one incredibly conceived comic. Bracco's the next Frank Miller, Erik Larsen, Doug TenNapel, etc. Mark those words.

Original, Unique, One-of-a-kind, riveting

I love the story, which relates to us all in some period of our lives. I love the artwork which details strong, confident lines, I look foward to the continuation which has endless possibilities. I thoroughly recommend this to everyone who can truly stomach real life, ok maybe real life in another dimension or world, but real life indeed. This is not your ordinary comic. Check it out!

Tana Hoban has done it again! Simple, bold images pop out and grab baby's attention. Great for those first few months when baby is developing eye muscles and tracking. I got it for my daughter when she was an infant and now is a staple I give for baby gifts.

These black and white books are great for babies - I buy them to go with all my baby shower gifts! This one is really great because it folds out like an accordian and you have black on white on one side and on the other side it is white on black. Babies will just lay and stare at the images! Still a good book for when the baby is 2 - my 2 year old will now "read" the book to my baby - she tells her what the pictures are!

We like the images but...

Several of the images are duplicates from other Tana Hoban books. This one is not our favorite especially since it is an accordion style foldout book. I recommend White on Black, Black on White and What is That?

Another great black and white book! It's okay to have variety. Maybe baby is content to see the same images over and over but will appreciate variety soon enough as they get older. Different black and whites make it interesting for mami and siblings too! A great buy. My 2 year old likes to "flash" the pages for his brother. Even my toddler can tell that he can get the baby's attention with "reading" to him.

Really catpures babies attention

Bought a few black and white books and have been showing them periodically since our baby has been only a few days old. He will stare at the book and study things. I've only gotten through the cover and one page but I can see the images really capture the babies attention. Will be using it for months to come. Very nice illustrations. Highly recommended.

Whether you are from the North or the South,if you are interested in American history and like a story that gives you some insight into the hardships and triumphs of people caught in the midst of war right in their own back yard, you will enjoy this book. It is suitable for school age children as well as adults. You will feel as if you know the main characters and many of their neighbors. Kudos to Chris Swager for a very well written adventure that treats us to seldom discussed historical aspects of the Revolutionary war. It is informative, yet fun to read. Hope we get more from this author.

Thank you, Dr. Swager!

My husband, my 15-yr.-old daughter, and I were fortunate enough to pay a visit to historic Brattonsville. Aside from the fact that we were completely enamored of this being one of the sites for the film, "The Patriot"--which is how we found it in the first place, we were fortunate enough to have an excellent and enthusiastic young woman who is a history major (and has been active at Brattonsville since she was 15) as our guide. I had only recently discovered that my family tree goes back to the Revolution. I have always loved historical fiction, but this story thrilled me as I knew I'd be able to use it to finally start (and fuel) those same fires in my 8th grade students. I teach in the Drop-Out Prevention program for unmotivated students, and feel it to be fast paced, therefore interest holding, and easy to read. (I read it in the car on the way home.) My daughter read it and loved it as well. I've asked our reading specialist to order a class set. It's an excellent tool for "Bridges" between Language Arts and Social Studies, either in the middle or high school. ***** Please write more!*****

Living history facts are excellent. This is what is so great about this fiction, it's based on non-fiction and this gives the book a special niche where school children will be held to the story, but being subjected to how life was at this uncertain time in American history.

I am a 16 year old Revolutionary War re-enactor from South Carolina, and I live about an hour and a half away from Camden, SC, where the story took place. Black Crows and White Cockades has been the best book written about a Southern Rev War family I've ever read. Not only was all the information about the various battles mentioned in Dr. Swager's book extremely accurate, but the characters in the book, particularly Ann, were easy to relate to, which brought the story to life. Black Crows kept me reading and interested until the very last page. Masterful!

Racial Bias In The Legal System Exposed...by a JUDGE!!!
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2005-01-25
As a New Yorker, I remember Judge Bruce Wright well. He was dubbed: "Cut 'em loose Bruce", because he often released arrested citizens without their having to post bail money. Mr. Wright upheld the law that bail is not to be used as a punishment, but only as a guarantee that the accused party return to court to face the charges against he/she. This infuriated the "powers-that-be". The fact that Judge Wright is a Black man, and many of those who came before him were also Black people, swayed the media to portray his actions as racially motivated, as opposed to his acknowledgement of the law. His book superbly reflects the blatant inequitableness of the criminal justice system and how it is purposely designed to work against Blacks and other people of color. His personal experiences, as a sitting judge, lend great credence to his analogy and conclusions concerning the legal system. Wright fearlessly gives names and elaborates on instances wherein he witnessed and experienced bias in the system. This book is not written in "textbook" fashion, provides some humorous irony and is very informative. Add it to your library.

This book is a larger-sized hardback with flaps to open. That alone I thought would pull our 3 yr old son in and make this one of his fave books. But not so. He'll read through it with me, but doesn't pick it on his own. Maybe it's because he already knows many of the concepts and he tends to prefer realistic colorful illustrations. Maybe better for a 2 yr old? Very nicely produced, good quality pages and printing.

Seeger's work looks deceptively simple but is more often than not quite surprising.

Black White Day Night is another lift-the-flap book of opposites that lives up to her other lift-the-flap projects: The Hidden Alphabet and Lemons are Not Red.

Her bright and unfussy illustrations appeal to children and the cleverness of her designs will appeal to adults. I always find myself genuinely surprised when looking through her books which strike me as being very well-thought out and conceptualized.

This book has lots of rolling infomation and presents information on several styles of hand rolling. The book also covers more advanced info on escaping holes and rolling in currents.

I think Ken Whiting's book does a nicer job though for someone who's primarily interested in playboat or surf kayak rolling. He presents more up to date information on setup in playboats and better "debugging" information. As one who formerly had a bombproof roll in an old style 13 ft boat but who has been inconsistent recently in new boats, his information and exercises where just what I needed to bring back effectiveness and confidence.

I bought this book around the time it first came out about nine years ago or so. Not only is it useful for learning the kayak roll, the author also covers "old school" playboating maneuvers such as wave surfing, side-surfing in holes, 360's, enders, and pirouttes. The illustrations are diagramatic and especially helpful. Rolling techniques included are the "C-to-C" or snap roll, the sweep roll, back deck rolls, hands rolls as well as rolling stategies and exercises. Definitely one of the most helpful kayaking technique books I have read.

Excellent......or should I say, necessary guide for beginners.

This book was actually my first ever Amazon.com purchase almost 10 ago. It is a must have for anyone new to the sport of kayaking and just getting down the art of the bombproof roll, something essential for Class 4 whitewater or greater. This is a book with excellent illustrations and in-depth explanations, which allow one to visualize how a specific roll is done, even if there is nobody there showing you first-hand. This book has it all: the regular Eskimo roll, the two-handed roll, the one-handed roll, and even the no hands roll. And even non-roll techiques are presented here, such as wave surfing. Practically whatever you want to learn, it is in this book.

I heartily recommend this......a must-have to anyone new to the sport.

this book taught me to roll, on my own, no instructor. derek hutchinson's book is a classic but dutkey's is an instruction manual.
personal creed: if you cant roll, don't go further than you can swim to shore. ergo, if you sea kayak, buy this book.
forget the pawlata, it's impractical. go for the sweep roll and relish the freedom having a bombproof roll brings to your paddling.

Wow! This book by Jean-Michel Cousteau & Mose Richards is amazing! The 120 full color photographs in here are some of the best i have ever seen. Truly breathtaking pictures of this awesome predator. This book chronicles the Cousteau team's extensive two-and-a-half years study of the great white shark at Dangerous Reef, Australia. After attracting the sharks, the research team would observe the sharks behavior underwater in specially built stainless steel cages and one made of Luxon(a clear, bulletproof plastic). They would then tag them and attach transmitters to follow their movements and patterns. A new understanding emerges of the great white and it's lonely, lifelong hunt for food.

For being the Master of the Seas, without even using mechanical aids to assist you, like we, the Humans, the Wimps, the Know-Nothings, the Arrogant Pestilence of the World must resort to to even attempt to conquer you. Keep fighting, Terrible, Beautiful Lordly Ones. We offer you humble, unworthy obeisance in the form of this book, under the aegis of your most dutiful admirer, Jacques Cousteau, Poseidon rest his soul. I must say that originally I was skeptical of a non-Wizard's company providing materials for the Dungeons and Dragons game, but when I opened and perused a copy of the Crucible of Freya, that changed. The quality of the cover and the cover illustration grabbed my attention. I purchased it immediately and took it home to digest. The graphics are top notch, the plot and story are excellent and the overall presentation of the module is very good. It centers around the activities of one of "1st Edition" Dungeons and Dragons best known villians: Orcus, Demon Lord of the Undead. It is great to see that first edition feel. This company knows how to write good adventures and knows how to package them to make them a complete product. There are several good maps, several NPC's presented to help adventurers and a complete location that DM's can base further adventures in. The best thing about Necromancer Games is their customer support. If you purchase their products, you can visit their web site and download additional material for each adventure, really giving you your money's worth. I think that the D20 Open License might be the best thing for DnD and that Necromancer Games will be leading the way in providing additional resources for all Dnd players.

Great Module for Beginning and Experienced players

The Crucible of Freya (and it's online introductory module, The Wizard's Amulet) are both excellent products. They are geared toward new DM's and take the time to explain the new 3rd edition rules and proper ways these rules should be used. This is a very refreshing way to read a module for new and old players alike as it reinforces what you know (or just think you know).
Highlights: A simple but well planned adventure centered around the retrieval of a holy relic. The villians are nasty, more than a challenge for the 1st and 2nd level characters the module is designed for, but the website has free advice on how to tailor the adventure for more powerful characters.
Numerous NPC's are introduced with quirky backgrounds and personalities that the players may or may not meet. I have adapted the entire module to my Forgotten Realms campaign and plopped it in the north, a few hundred miles from Waterdeep.
The writers stress that although the module is very difficult for low level characters, they did this on purpose as the best memories often derive from the most demanding challenges. And a resourceful DM can still save the PC's butts from the fire without them knowing.
Definitely worth giving a try, and the best thing is, the more popularity Necromancy Games gets, the more money they acquire, and the better their products will be in the future.

Interesting start, kind of repetitive, but good intro.

This module is intended as an introduction to AD&D for new players and DMs. I have not yet played or DMed it, and there will be spoilers below:

The production quality is uneven. Nice glossy, colorful cover and back which you can see above. The maps are amateurish in look, and the text is easy to read with good use of whitespace.

There's a lot of fleshing out the adventure and the area surrounding the adventure. What I really like is that there are areas that will likely [terminate] a low level party if they go exploring, but most of those offer a way out or a way to solve the problem (even if it's just to run, a healthy thing to learn to do for players). No coddling of the players here.. I like it. Though there is one way for the DM to help out the players, but it's through a natural part of the module, not fudging a die roll because the players are in over their heads. The village and NPCs are well fleshed out, with good characters having some not so good qualities at times, and at times the PCs and the NPCs will conflict even if on the same side. Because the players can give in to the NPC wishes or do what they think is best, it gives the illusion of choice to the players in an otherwise simple adventure. The actual encounters mostly involve one monster (humanoid actually) race, unless the party explores where it shouldn't, and as such it can be fairly repetitive. There's a secret area in the module that they can find, with a surprising twist if a fight doesn't actually occur, which shows that there isn't always a happy ending. There's little in the way of puzzles, and no 'usual' dungeon. The players can greatly affect the difficulty of one of the main battle depending on what they do...

>Overall, this is a good first adventure with plenty of opportunity for roleplay, conflict and battle. Almost every possibility is spelled out for the DM, and there are numerous ways to continue on from the end of the adventure. Recommended.

Good for beginning DMs, but has errors

This module is quite well done. It is somewhat better than the modules that WotC has been putting out. Also, the downloadable mini-adventure is pretty good.

One strength of this module is in its notes to the DM. The hints provided about how to run an encounter are the kind that are normally hard to express, but when expressed properly are valuable pearls of wisdom. There are also good descriptions of where xp are derived, suggestions of a bonus, additional story ideas,... I recommended the module to a friend of mine who wanted to learn to be DM and she was immensely pleased.

The module is a little bit difficult for beginning players, however. Some of the encounters could easily destroy a party if the DM wants them to. Therefore, this module is especially suited to a beginner DM in a group of experienced players. Experienced players often are not happy sitting around while the DM reads a long-winded block of text describing a room. In this module, text that is to be read to players is mercifully short. It is also clearly set out from the other text in "scrolls" so that you can access it quickly. Very nice layout.

There is a problem associated with the module that almost prevents me from giving it a 5 star rating. The authors of the module made mistakes with the 3e rules. For example, a sorcerer wears armor and has the spell mage armor. The authors erroneously believe that mage armor and armor stack. That is not the case, according to the DMG. (I decided it was unfair to dock a star since the character was downloaded rather than printed in the module.)

I bought this adventure while looking for something to add to my new 3rd edition campaing. I found it great reading and better than anything put out by WOTC (with the exception of the new system) to date. Then to find out that there is another 23 page online down load for free, as well as several other DM and player maps, this just blew me away. and all for a smaller price than the new WOTC releases. I have since purchased every d20 product in the sword and sorcery line and have not once been disapointed. A thing I can't say for any other gaming company that I have tried yet.

THE most solid metaphysical book of them all

There is no higher praise that I could bestow any OTHER book than to compare it favorably to The Unobstructed Universe. I read it in 1972 and have read it at least three times since then. It never fails to teach me SOMETHING of value.

The most fundamental measure of any philosophical system is if it is internally consistent, i.e., that its internal parts are in agreement, with no contradictions. TUU is completely, 100% internally consistent.

It is logical. It is thorough. It puts all its pieces together, into one consistent whole. Even the premise of the book is that THERE IS ONLY ONE UNIVERSE (TUU). The universe "over there", on the "other side", is the same universe as THIS ONE, the one we inhabit. To claim that there is only one universe must be backed up with discussions about HOW they are the same. With its spelling out of the trilogy (time, space, motion) that we live with, and comparing it to the "trilogia" (conductivity, receptivity, frequency) of the universe that interlaces with ours, it unfolds for us principles - ESSENCES - that once learned about stay with us forever.

Without creating a philosophy complete with followers and gurus, Betty and Stewart White lay out a framework that we can all use, in formulating our ideas about why we are here and how we fit into the universe. There is no church that has ever built up around this, no sect, no cult, no belief system. It is just crib notes for taking the universe seriously, while appreciating it all with wonder.

Reading this all those years ago, I was pretty new (and YOUNG!) and eager to learn all I could about reality and the universe. After reading it, I thought that there would be books like this every so often along the trail. Sadly, that has not ever been the case. Yes, some uncovered for us a few tidbits and others did other tidbits, but none has come up to the standard of TUU.

The closest one - THE only other one I highly, highly recommend to anyone searching this area of inquiry - is another book of Stewart White's that was never actually published. It is titled "THE GAELIC MANUSCRIPTS" and is FREE for download at http://harmonhouse.net/fdl/gaelic.htm#contents. Like TUU, The Gaelic Manuscripts is an amazing book. Anyone reading White's contributions to metaphysical study will be grateful to have found this unpublished book. It is challenging, enlightening, and opens up vistas about many subjects that 'blow my head off'. It is NOT an easy read, and it is easy to read right past great passages that only make sense later on, and only when we come back to these points in a subsequent read does much of it hit home.

TUU is a foundational book, one that every searcher into the metaphysical would do well to read. And read again. And again. Gaelic, too.

On a scale of 1-5 stars, I rate The Unobstructed Universe a 15. And the funny thing is, I am not exaggerating. Gaelic might be a 20.

A classic

I've been curious about Stewart and Betty White's books for a long time. I finally purchased 'The Unobstructed Universe' and found it to be refreshing because of the time period it was written. Humans will always be curious about life after death - it truly is the great unknown. Yes, we can read about what 'mediums' and others have to say with interest, but the Whites are one of the original authors on this subject so I found their take on the subject refreshing. Because they lived in simpler times, they were not distracted by all the chaos at the beginning of today's 21st century as we are currently experiencing. Cell phones, TV, radios, computers, video games - we're all wired for endless chatter in our heads - too busy and perhaps too uninterested in what will happen to us after we pass over. Gotta live in the 'now', don't you know.

While we are bombarded with 'future shock' on a daily basis, the question begs "Will I die with a satisfied mind? Did my life have any meaning or was I just in survival mode from crade to tomb?" No judgement here. This book will slow down your thinking processes to ponder such thoughts. Highly recommended for both beginner and advanced alternative-paradigm thinkers.

A Book From the Past and Still Relevant

THE UNOBSTRUCTED UNIVERSE has been in print since 1940 and is still relevant to today's world. It was published as a psychic book that gives convincing evidence of continued life after death. Yet it is much more than this, for it also provides a philosophy about the afterlife that goes beyond religion. It borders on science, giving tantalizing views of what we might expect in a future life without giving detail that suggests angels, light at the end of a tunnel, and other such irrelevant concepts. It is thought-provoking and challenging. This is a book that could sell well on Kindle.

Of the seven spiritual works by Western fiction author Stewart Edward White, this one is the most comprehensive and powerful. However, I recommend you read "The Betty Book" first. Some may very well take issue with the mode of enquiry (communications between Mr. White and his deceased wife, Betty)--I have my doubts about that too. But the metaphysical universe that White constructs (supposedly with Betty's guidance) is consistent, inspiring, and IMHO logical. It fills in gaps left in other metaphysical/cosmological systems. It makes a lot more sense, IMO, than other (e.g. the Seth) books do. I suggest, if the stated source offends you, that you just ignore that and, instead, look at the vision as a whole and see if it resonates with you. It does with me.

This is my second purchase of this item. I purchased it for my granddaughter when she was 2 and she absolutely loved it! She is 4 now and I finally lost the cd that went along with the books and she was so disappointed that whenever she rode with momaw she could not listen to her books... so I bought another. I highly recommend it. The voice reading the stories is as good as the dvds. It is well written and the vocals are excellent.

ONCE UPON A DREAM: A DELIGHTFUL DISNEY TREAT FOR FANS OF ALL AGES

Once upon a time, before Ariel, Jasmine, and Belle, three Princesses ruled Supreme in the Disney Kingdom:
Snow White, Cinderella, and Aurora/Briar Rose (a.k.a. Sleeping Beauty). This original, classic Princess Trio is celebrated in a delightful and entertaining Books and CD Box set.

The packaging may be pink (meaning the item is pidgeonholed as a product for "young girls") and the story presentation is brief (again pidgeonholing: as an item for "young readers") but this is actually a treat for fans of "CLASSIC DISNEY"-- fans of all ages. I don't have little girls/children. I purchased this simply because I love "CLASSIC DISNEY"-- and the price is extremely affordable.

I found the box the books and CD came in to be the perfect way to store and care for the books. The box easily fits on to a shelf of my entertainment center; so it should also fit easily on to any bookshelf. The books are 24 page paperbacks, but quite sturdy and nicely illustrated; although the cover illustration for the "SNOW WHITE" book makes Snow White and her Prince look like dorks!!

The three stories are all on one CD. The CD almost fell out of the box when I opened it. I put the CD in a jewel case, and downloaded it into my computer as well to make for easier use.

The stories are brief, (not quite the same as the larger and longer cherished Book and LP Record Series from my own childhood; but I'm still completely enchanted) so certain elements of the Disney plots (the mice making a dress for Cinderella, The Seven Dwarfs Dance Party with Snow White, and the good fairies making a birthday cake for Aurora and cleaning the cottage with magic wands) are eliminated. Still, I was amazed at how well the spirit and the essence of these Disney films is captured on a brief 36 minute CD. True fans will notice happily familiar musical underscoring over the narration of "CINDERELLA" and "SLEEPING BEAUTY." No songs from "SNOW WHITE" are included, but this story features a particularly vigorous alternate musical
underscoring, and is the best of the CD adaptations. However, "SLEEPING BEAUTY" is my favorite Disney fairy tale.

The narration is quite lively and the voice actors for the characters are superb; particularly for "SNOW WHITE." The voice actors are not the same as those in the actual films, but sound so similar that they will certainly evoke plesant memories.

Ilene Woods is heard singing "A Dream Is A Wish Your Heart Makes" from the film Soundtrack of "CINDERELLA", and beautiful soprano Mary Costa sings "Once Upon A Dream" and "I Wonder" from the "SLEEPING BEAUTY" Soundtrack.

They are just the right length stories for the princess fan. My daughter listened and followed along almost every day for a month. Hit the spot for her.

We purchased this read-along set for our three-year-old daughter, and she absolutely loves it. These are probably her favorite stories that we've purchased for her so far.

The collection itself is quite nice - Cinderella, Snow White and Sleeping Beauty in three separate books and one CD. Currently, only Cinderella is available for individual purchase. The box it came in was a piece of cardboard junk that was oversized and took up more space than it should have. We tossed it and are keeping the books in the same pile as the rest of her read-alongs and the CD in a jewel case of its own.

While it is nice to cut down on the number of discs to keep track of, the 3-in-1 set up is a little hard, because unless I program my daughter's CD player to just play one story, it will play all three, one right after another. Usually, this isn't a big deal - it gives me about 36 minutes of uninterrupted peace - but if we even suggest that she only listen to one of the three, she has an absolute fit. To her, the three stories HAVE to be listened to consecutively.

So, we like the collection, the packaging was pathetic, and the single-disc can create a few problems, but overall it was a very good buy. I would like to see the individual stories offered separately, though, so we could have some choices in what we decide to purchase.
