TadpoleReview Date: 2008-04-26
I thought this book was amazing and it deserves a 5 out of 5.
My name is Tad now, not Tadpole! MP 311Review Date: 2006-03-24
I liked the plot because at times the book was sad but at others, it was happy. Tadpole was trying to find a different home. Uncle Matthew, the owner of the house Tadpole was staying at, didn't treat him right. If he did something wrong, Uncle Matthew would slap Tadpole on the back with a horsewhip. Tadpole ran away to the Collin's house, his cousin's, so he could get away from Uncle Matthew.
The main character's were Tadpole, or Tad, Carolina, Kentucky, Virginia, Georgia, and the girl's mom, Aunt Serilda. I liked them because they all had their own personality's. Kentucky was popular, Virginia was pretty, Georgia was smart, and, well Carolina, she didn't quite know what talent she had, at least until Tadpole came, and that's what I love about him. He is nice, honest, he include's other people, and he helps people too. That's how Carolina found her talent, by Tad. She found that her talent was singing, finding the harmony in music, and also, playing the guitar, she was a natural at it. She could also identify car engines.
As you can see, I really liked this book and I didn't have to say anything bad about it. This book was made up of a great plot, great characters, and so many other reasons!
A Bright Future And a Sad Past-CLReview Date: 2006-03-24
In Tadpole Ruth White, the author did a great job of writing this book in a way that an eleven year old girl in the south would have talked. Ruth White used words like `cause instead of because, and git instead of get. Details like these makes Tadpole more realistic book.
Tadpole was about a mother, four girls whose father left them because he was tired, and a cousin nick named Tad whose parents had both died. Tad had been living with his abusive uncle Matthew Birch, who had adopted him but, he uses him as free labor until Tad turns 18. One day when Tad's uncle was really mad at him he decided to run away and go to his mother's sister Serilda who lives in a small house with her four daughters. In the middle of the night he goes to his aunts room and tells her all about what his uncle has done to him. Carol who is the youngest and sleeps in the same room as her mother woke up in the middle of their conversation and decided to listen in, so she heard a lot and it became her secret. Mama tried to get a herring with a judge so she can be his legal guardian, but the judge won't hear the case.
This is a great book I it think should have a sequel, to tell more about Tads life and if Uncle Matthew tries to do something to Tad, or if he leaves him alone.

Have you ever read a book that you didn't want to put down? That's what it was like when I was reading Tadpole. Tadpole was the best book ever! I loved the plot but I thought it was really sad at some parts. I also liked the characters in the book.
I loved the plot of the book because it was sad at certain times but it was happy at other times too. Tad, as he likes to be called, is focused on finding a home where people will take care of him and treat him right. His Uncle Matthew, who has been beating him up, is where Tad has been staying, so he ran away. Tad ran away to his Aunt Serilda's house with her daughters Carolina, Georgia, Kentucky, and Virginia. They kept Tad there but he was scared of getting caught by his uncle. Carolina felt like she didn't belong in the family and Tad helped her feel better about herself by helping her discover some of her special talents she didn't even know she had. Like singing, and finding the harmony of songs and she could hear and identify all the different kinds of cars and she would help keep Tad safe if she heard an unfamiliar engine because it might be Uncle Matthew.
I liked the characters in Tadpole too. The characters in the book lived in Kentucky and had a southern accent. The main characters in this book are Tadpole or Tad, Carolina, Kentucky, Virginia, Georgia, and the girls mama and Tad's Aunt Serilda. I liked the characters because each one had a different personality.
I loved this book and as you can see I didn't have anything bad to say about it and if you read it, I'm sure you won't either!
Best abd exciting book in the worldReview Date: 2006-03-22
Have you ever read a book that you just can't put down? That's how I felt when I read an amazing book called Tadpole. There were so many exciting sections that made me jump out of my seat. But the best part that I liked was the characters.
The first exciting event was when Tadpole came to Aunt Serilda's house and lived with the four girls for a while. It got me excited because I thought was not going to be that good. It turned out to be very suspenseful. Another section of the book were there was excitement was when when Tadpoles uncle came to their house to find him. When his uncle came it got me very excited because they hid under the bead and it put a picture in my head right away.
The characters were very funny, but one, Uncle Matthew. He was very cruel and mean. He would abuse Tadpole when he lived there, but he eventually escaped. Tad was very entertaining and funny because he played the guitar and sang. The best character was Carolina because, she reminds me of ME! She reminds me of myself because, because she's nice and quiet.
I really liked the book because it was exciting, suspenseful, and the characters were very funny. There are so many more reasons that I liked the book Tadpole and I'd read it again. Maybe, if you read it too, you would like it also.

The Cat's Meow of TarotReview Date: 2008-03-21
The deck follows the visual symbolism of the Rider-Waite decks. However, there are a few differences- 10 of Swords, Strength and Death come to mind. This may irk some readers already used to the Rider-Waite decks. Don't get me wrong- I do love the Rider-Waite deck (and the Rider-Waite clones like the Universal and Universal Waite). That said, I actually really enjoy the more whimsical twist on the 10 of Swords and Strength in this deck. I also find the different take on the Death card in this deck to be very apropos in the overall theme.
I think this deck may be perfect for those looking for a more positive take on Tarot symbolism, those with more sensitive souls that find the original Rider-Waite to be a little grusome, and kids interested in learning the tarot. I think both beginners and adept readers can both enjoy this deck.
The card stock is very high quality, print quality and color is excellent. The artwork is top-notch.
I also recommend the Tarot of the Baroque Bohemian Cats for those interested in decks with feline themes. However, I personally prefer artwork over photography- hence I have the Tarot of the White Cats instead.

THE Tarot Deck for cat lovers!Review Date: 2006-08-16
A few of the cards have slight variations from the Raider-Waite Tarot ... for example, the 10 of Swords shows the picture of the Swords piercing through a sheet or blanket that is lying on the ground, but the cat has escaped ... perhaps not however, before first using one of his nine lives!? It kind of gives a slightly different feel than the "standard" meaning.
A cat has been added in the Ace cards. How fun! In the Ace of Coins card for instance, the cat is pouncing on the coin which to me, not only gives the meaning of a potentially good opportunity involving money but also that the opportunity should be pounced on! (I love it!) And in the Ace of Rods the cat is "digging his claws" into the staff (or rod). You can work that one out for yourself. At any rate, the variations are wonderful and give additional meaning to the cards.
The backs of the cards are also beautiful showing a blue background bordered with an ornate golden frame. A white cat sits in each of two golden chalices that are stem to stem on the card. Beautiful!
I would definitely recommend this deck to anyone and especially to cat lovers!

Where did this come from?Review Date: 2008-06-19
I only stumbled upon it at a flea market a week ago on the 2 for $1 table and decided that it looked interesting. Mine is a paperback with a 1956 publication date making me 10 years old when it hit the bookstores.
From page 1, I wasn't able to put it down. I won't spoil the plot (although some already have) for you by going into the details, but if you're a fan of this genre, pick up a copy. You won't be disappointed.
He Was Not Going To Obey Stevenson's CommandReview Date: 2006-11-12
In order to carry out his espionage mission, Ken is assigned to the submarine "USS Shark". The "Shark" is commanded by a posing martinet, Cmdr. Paul Stevenson, who seems dedicated to avoiding battle with the Japanese even while putting his boat and crew at risk. Having run from several encounters and taken pummelings anyway, his crew is unhappy and inefficient. Stevenson himself is a surly and unpleasant man who has no interest in Ken Braden's mission and cares not at all if he makes it as personally deadly to the young officer as possible.
Despite Stevenson's allergy to battle, the "Shark" cannot avoid several tense and terrifying encounters with the Japanese Navy, during one of which the Executive Officer, Phil Carney must take command. Carney quickly turns the "Shark" into a fighting ship, and aids Ken Braden in carrying out his mission.
The one drawback to UP PERISCOPE is the now trite familiarity of the story, but that is only because the novel dates from 1956 and it's basic storyline has been retold in various forms nonstop for the last fifty years. For the 2000s it steps perhaps too far back from being graphic, even for its primary young audience. For the 1950s and 1960s the tone was right. Many Eisenhower Babies now in their 40s and 50s came to this book as youngsters and remember it very well.
Despite the fact that it is usually classed as "Young Adult" fiction, UP PERISCOPE is a simply and directly written, well-told, well-plotted, and riveting book even for adults. The depiction of life (and death) on a diesel sub in the Pacific Theatre circa 1943 is detailed and honest, giving the reader a true taste of the experience of war even while extolling the good old-fashioned virtue of gumption, and highlighting the ordinary heroism of getting the job done under extraordinary circumstances.

I'm a history buff who really likes learning about WWII. So that's why I choose this book. Don't be put off by how short this book is, it is factual but has a plot.
Up Periscope has elements similar to The Survivor...Review Date: 1999-12-01
Both are highly enjoyable.
Up Periscope has a somewhat different perspective, in that it portrays a little bit more of what life on board a WW2 diesel boat in the Pacific Theatre was like. Readers who enjoy this aspect of the book would also doubtless enjoy 'Run Silent, Run Deep,' by Capt. Edward Beach.
Robb White had the gift of economy of words. With a very few short sentences, he is able to evoke powerful feelings and emotions. His books truly set the standard in the 'coming of age' style of books in the 60's.
We need more writers like him.
His wife, Annie White, runs a publishing company in LA. Her only purpose is to get more of his books back into print. So far, she has succeded with just the two books currently available- 'Deathwatch,' and 'Lions Paw.' Lets hope she gets more out soon.
There are a lot of kids who would benefit from reading these books.

Have A "Humble Bumble Jolly" Christmas - An Old-Fashioned Family TreatReview Date: 2007-09-13
Author Lady Gray's "White Holly" will have you drifting back in time on a lovely journey to one snowy Christmas so long ago. It is the turn of the century and ""Papa" must venture out of the little cabin and brave the snowbound woods for wood to warm his family. When he meets with an accident he is rescued by a jolly bearded man in a red suit (I can just picture here the kids faces squealing with delight as they know who it is!). The jolly fellow takes Papa back to a far away time with his magical story of his reindeer and the joy of giving. On Papa's return home he finds he is blessed with another miracle.
This wondrous story is told in the form of poetry, with a sing-song rhythm and is meant to be read aloud. It will captivate and delight audiences of all ages, and may even evoke a lump in your throat. It's a feel good story, one that will warm the hearts of all who hear it.
This soft cover edition also conveys the feeling of old-fashioned traditions. About magazine size and about 3/4 of each page has fabulous illustrations(by D.A. Melvin) in black and white, with wonderful faces and details. The poem continues on each page below the drawings. At 32 pages, it is not very long, perfect for a nice little family gathering, and you can follow up with The Night Before...
I think even a child of around 8 may be able do the honors of the reading. I think it would be about a half hour read, maybe a little longer with everyone getting a look at the illustrations.
A lovely return to home and hearth for your Christmas Eve, and very entertaining and wholesome read. A real treat that will get worn with use. Buy a couple(would make a great gift as well)
Highly recommended for the holidays.

Really a nice coaster book...Review Date: 2001-01-26
I think what I like most about this book, is that it provides some great photos and informative text on interesting coasters that you don't always here about such as the White Cyclone and The Bandit at Yomiuri Land in Japan as well as many coasters at smaller parks in the states.
The book divides its space well between woodies, steel hyper coasters and steel loopers. It even gives space to water rides and spin and pukes. The book was published in 1996, so of course none of the latest and greatest coasters are featured, but it provides a very full and diverse selection of rides and I can't say enough about the great photos of rarely featured coasters. Well worth the purchase price for any coaster nut.

Bungle through the jungleReview Date: 2008-02-06
In 1923 eight scientists plus the author venture through the South American mountains and rainforests to make further discoveries in their respective fields of study. Touted as, "The most perfectly equipped expedition that has ever started to explore South America", it quickly unfolds into a blundering journey with many problems and mishaps.
Thanks to MacCreagh's sense of humor and wit we see how every imaginable incident went from bad to worse. One by one these scientists quit the expedition to forsake the author and one other to travel up the remote Uaupes and Tiquie Rivers meeting face to face with hostile natives. What transpires is a remarkable short term study into the culture of these indigenous peoples.
Entertaining read.

GREAT BOOK ABOUT AN UNREMARKABLE EXPEDITIONReview Date: 2006-08-06
The author is a helper/manager of the expedition. He manages to describe the expedition from its beginning in the Bolivia highlands out to the Amazon plains and to its disintegration. It is quite clear that the scientist were not sure what to expect, and so had not prepared accordingly. Huge volumes of luggage went unused and were a huge burden. Egos and discomfort made the scientist into bickering children and inept explorers. The author masks their names because apparently these were well known figures of their time.
There is a bit of scientific content in the book, but clearly the main reason to read it is for the good humor of the author in describing the situations they get themselves in. One learns more about people and how they behave when taken to extremes than one does about the Amazon.

Incredible feats and heart-thumping adventureReview Date: 2004-03-28
In this poetic story a young girl experiences some of that feeling during her outing at the beach. Having missed the first wave, is dunked by the second one, and then finally catches the third.
While on her floater, from the white caps of the roaring sea waves arise 10,000 White Horses, some unique guest members of the aquatic world. Running along the waves, pushing and shoving, as they playfully race for the shore. For one heart pounding moment upon reaching the sandy beach they jump through darkness and disintegrate back into the sea.
10,000 White Horses is a great adventure and a way to introduce young children to the wonders of nature, gaining a deep appreciation for these cosmically remarkable creatures.
This is an excellent starter book for both English and Spanish speaking children and an instrumental teaching tool for teachers and parents.

Galloping into your heartReview Date: 2006-04-05
What a fun, vivid story full of summer fun and memories. Children ask to hear this rhythmic story again and again. The illustrator did a great job of making the images leap off the page while hiding the horses in a unique way that adds to the reading experience by encouraging kids to seek and find the frolicking foals among the ocean foam. The writing style and tempo provide a great educational style that allows children and adults to not only read the words but to also feel the excitement of a day at the ocean. For those who love horses, live near the ocean or visit the ocean, this one is sure to gallop into your heart.
