I really wasn't sure I'd like this book, but I was pleasantly surprised that by page two, I was hooked. I love the soap opera elements (even though I don't even like soap operas) and all the craziness of Abby's family. The whole thing was hilarious and just plain wonderful.

This book made me chortle several times. The story is offbeat but captures the manic drama of the teen years. Snappy dialogue, weird characters, and sweetness make this novel a good bet for the young adults in your life. Stylistically it reminds me a little of Curtis Sittenfeld's "Prep" if that book took place in a white trash milieu. And underneath the comedic exterior, it handles well some heady issues of sexual identity and social acceptance.

Sisters getting pregnant, mom remarrying three times, car accidents, quick amnesiac episodes -- these all sound like another episode of a soap opera. Unfortunately, for Abby Savage, that's actually her life, and she knows that it resembles a soap because that is all she watches.

With her family's history of dating and getting pregnant and then getting heartbroken, Abby is ready to find the perfect someone with her list of five things called her "One true love plan."

1. Find someone new. Abby knows this firsthand since her sisters' boyfriends are passed around and recycled like a bottle of water. Of course, this isn't so easy since the people Abby goes to school with have been the same ones since kindergarten.

2. No baggage from past relationships allowed. Abby's sisters find her the perfect babysitter. They just don't understand that it's their baby.

3. Looks aren't everything. Falling in love isn't mainly centered on looks!

4. Don't need him. They are always going to make promises, like how her father always promised her wonderful gifts for her birthday, but it never happened. Disappointed with this fact, Abby finds it fit to just trust herself.

5. Get out of town. How can you find someone new when everyone has dated everyone else?

With this list, new knowledge on soaps, and a front-row seat at the Fancy White Trash that is her family, Abby will soon find that one true love.

But will it help her get through the three pregnancies currently in her family, all by the same person? And can it stop her from getting back with the old boyfriend who broke her heart? Or will she just have to figure out that when finding that one true love, lists aren't necessarily needed?

Cute, humorous, and very scandalous, FANCY WHITE TRASH is the next guilty pleasure. Just with the first chapter, readers can see that Abby's life screams "Jerry Springer episode." The obstacles that Abby must face, from the mistakes that her family has made to adapting to their lifestyle, will ultimately make readers fall in love with her. A novel that is unlike most out there in the market, FANCY WHITE TRASH should be on your "to-read list!"

Abby Savage loves watching soap operas. Good thing, because her life--totally a soap opera. Mom and sisters Kait and Shelby have all dated the same guy, and Abby's first love Jackson could possibly, maybe, be the father of Kait's baby. As a result of all this love gone wild, Abby designs a set of five rules for falling in love--the One True Love Plan. Unfortunately, this plan means Jackson is out of the running for her heart.

In this funny and witty book, Marjetta Geerling has created in Abby someone that's more a friend than a mere character. Which is why you'll find yourself rooting for Abby to find her One True Love and escape the spectacle that is her family. Geerling is a great new voice on the YA scene. I can't wait to read her next book!

Abby rocks! No doubt about it. Her story, her philosophy, her world, are all tragic and beautiful, lost and found, up and down. With fresh dialogue and very real characters, it's no wonder Marjetta Geerling's story is such a fun-filled teen drama with plenty of references to soap operas, boys and modern American family life. Sticking to a plan is generally a good idea but Fancy White Trash and Abby' s One True Love plan makes you re-consider even your most treasured policies.

As far as forensic books go, it's very well-written, with good illustrations, and is very cost-efficient and easy to carry around. Aimed at field work, so the pointers (i.e. which bones are potentially confused with others) are very helpful. Could use some color and more diagrams, but for the price I paid for it, I'm not complaining.

This 'pocket' edition offers the forensic student and professional a handy and detailed field manual. The book is broken into two main sections, the beginning chapters offer an introduction to the science of forensics while the later chapters cover in precise detail the bones and their features systematically. A handy scale and comprehensive chapters on ethics, recovery and modification via animals and weathering makes this volume valuable for the archaeologist. Black and white photographs express bone topography from several angles and from the same individuals to maintain scale and morphology. The brief glossary could be expanded with definitions for basic Latin and Greek scientific terms for beginner students.

This book has helped me to identify human bones associated with artefacts (e.g. spears, shields)on more than one occasion. Virtually all photographs are to scale and the black and white photography shows detail that you can sometimes lose with colour photographs. This book is used as the unofficial textbook for the University of Queensland's (Australia)'Forensic Archaeology' subject.

Excellent reference for travelling and field work as it's half the size of the original edition. I have the original and bought this anyway. The photography is excellent and it gives you a number of views of each element, and examples of normal variation. It also manages not to leave out anything important even though it is smaller (I compared the chapters with the larger edition). But don't rely on this for exhaustive terminology; it's not meant to be a dictionary.

most comprehensive tree book on market
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-07-15
This book is comprehensive -- but isn't organized by common or scientific name. It is organized by type of tree, though I'm not certain how they chose the ordering of the groups. Nevertheless, two indices in the back reference all the trees by common names and by latin names.

This isn't a photography-based book, but has everything illustrated with paintings. This is like one of those detailed naturist descriptions you'd see from the 17-1800's. The drawings are very precise -- and full of color (not faded or faint). They aren't fuzzy sketches -- they are precise naturalist drawings -- showing detail of leaves, nuts(fruits), bark, shape -- sometimes with multiple views of the same tree in different seasons (to see color & shape change).

There are few trees you will find that are *not* in this book, but very few. Many of the trees listed will talk about origins, growth conditions & habits, sizing, how it was named, usages, wood quality, author's subjective overall rating (which is a pretty good guide), origins -- (some common trees today are long-ago cross breeds). And -- I underscore this -- it's ALL ABOUT TREES -- so it's an extremely thorough (I've never seen its equal, let along better). At 830+ pages, and over 6 pounds, this isn't a pocket book. But it is a book you'll want to read or skim from cover-to-cover -- and keep as a permanent reference. Would be nice to have a permanent down-loadable version into a palmtop for portability...Encyclopedias are so heavy! :-)

David More has created a massive, beautifully realized book which details, with almost scientific precision, individual species of trees. Although it retails for $80 it still seems reasonable given the massive scope of this project, which took More over ten years to complete. I can't imagine a better book on trees ever being published with this quality of illustration. The book does focus on species of trees within Europe, particularly Great Britain, but tree lovers will not be disappointed after a few pages of More's breathtaking work.

I collect books on trees, because I love trees. But not all books will do. I avoid gardening books and concentrate on dendrological or botanical type books because they are more useful to me. This is a great find because it is somewhat encyclopedic in nature and the drawings are wonderful. The only downside is that this is an English book and highlights trees grown there. It is much to large and heavy for a handbook, but it is nice to sit in your easy chair and slowly turn the pages.

Visuals and text both excellent

The combination of this author and this illustrator has produced an amazing book. Both have a lifelong interest in trees. The author aimed to produce a book to be "read for pleasure", but maintained a high scientific standard throughout, so you'll need to know a scion from a taxon from a sport. (There is a helpful glossary.) But he never forgets his duty to keep the text interesting. So we learn every cricket bat for the last 300 years has come from a single willow and its descendents.

The max height and hardiness are given for each tree, plus a rank as to desirability on a scale of 1 to 5 . One is a top choice for the garden or grounds, 3 might be suitable for commercial use, and 5 is a tree not particularly recommended, if only because of "extreme dullness".

It's rare to find any author this knowledgeable, who can offer anecdotes and historical information on countless specimens. And the accompanying paintings are works of art in their own right.

Letitia Baldridge's book is unquestionably "un coup de maitre". We are most grateful to her for allowing us to take a peek into that atmosphere of class, sophistication, grace and good taste that once was the Kennedy White House. Reading this fascinating book is like going back into this elegant and refined world created by Jacqueline Kennedy where culture, arts and good conversation were a main priority. I so enjoyed reading that book!!

In this small book there is a surprising amount of information on Jackie and Letitia's entertaining style, in stories, beautiful photographs, recipes and anecdotes. I especially like how she includes descriptions of the table settings (tablecloths etc) and menu choices, with short explanations of why they were chosen, and how they parted with tradition in many cases. It also provides a peak at the highly talented guests outside of politics whom they entertained, and how they entertained them! As other reviewers said, the recipes are mainly classics. Some I wouldn't dare serve today but it's nice to know what to do if I ever wish to!

I already own Rene Verdon's White House cookbook which is an enjoyable read as well as a great reference. Many of his great, classic recipes from that collection re-appear in this wonderful, picture-filled book that recreates the magic of Jackie's style that made Camelot. Rene Verdon and Letitia Baldridge show that they have not lost their touch and guide us through a host of beautiful occasions. My personal highlight is the famous state dinner at Mount Vernon. We find out many intriguing details about entertaining at the highest level and are able to take a little of the glamour to our own table. Rene Verdon's recipes are great classics that are meant to be enjoyed over and over again. They can be reproduced by the capable home cook with highly satisfying results.

Review Date: 2000-12-01
This is a marvellous, beautifully presented look at the entertaining done by President and Mrs. Kennedy during their too-brief thousand days in the White House. Letitia Baldrige was Mrs. Kennedy's Social Secretary, and she has collaborated with Kennedy White House Chef Rene Verdon on reminiscences and recipes that really do evoke that very special time and place. Baldrige's anecdotes give glimpses behind the scenes that help us all understand how distinguished the hosts, guests, and entertaining really were- and her comments are often very funny indeed. Verdon's recipes are drawn from menus actually served at the White House on historic occasions, such as the famed evening when cellist Pablo Casals played for the Kennedys and their guests. The book is incredibly generous with its illustrations, which range from White House photos, to pictures of actual invitations for the events described, to fashion designer Oleg Cassini's original sketches for Mrs. Kennedy's clothes. For Jackie devotees, the book is a bonanza, with many photos showing her in her full splendour as First Lady; one 1954 photo of her lighting the candles on her dinner table may be the single most beautiful ever taken of her. I have one small, gentle caveat: Verdon's recipes have been given before, in different form, in his 1967 "The White House Chef Cookbook". The versions of the recipes in this new book have been changed a bit from the 1967 incarnations, mainly with an eye to increasing the strength of flavour; today's palates are evidently more demanding than those of the Sixties. Still, you're getting a look at the Kennedy White House from the people who made it HAPPEN- no gossip, no hearsay, no errors of research. Baldrige and Verdon were indisputably THERE, and you could do much worse than to buy their book. Come to think of it, if you've been reading some of the other Kennedy books issued recently, you have.

What about vaccinations?
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2005-03-24
My only complaint with this wonderful book is that it doesn't touch on childhood vaccinations. This is an important topic in natural healing and the word vaccination isn't even mentioned in the index. Since this book was written in 1998, perhaps the chickenpox vaccine was still very new and the measles vaccine was very commonly used. I understand that one book can't cover all topics, but this is a big one. I would think parents who are looking for natural alternatives to health and healing would like to at least question their options when considering when and whether to vaccinate their children. There is an entire chapter dedicated to treating chicken pox and herpes, but nothing on measles. Neither vacccination will I give to my 11-month-old son and I am always looking for more information on the topic.

Although the book isn't loaded with complex medical terms, it isn't shy on information. It is written for the layman (with occasional pictures and tips boxes), and provides a well-rounded approach to diagnosing and gently treating COMMON illnesses in children. At the same time, the authors were careful to encourage traditional medical advice when appropriate

As a mother of a 14-month old, I have used this book numerous times. It is a life-saver for someone who is not intersted in feeding their kids antibiotics at the first sign of sickness. I have found all the answers to all of my questions about my daughter's health, starting with how to correctly evaluate fever to natural remedies for vomitting. The book is very well organized -it's easy to find answers to any common medical questions one could have. I feel so good about treating my daughter the natural way - I know it is so much better for her in the long run. This book is a must have for any parent who is interested in natural ways to promote and keep their child's health.

This book has been very useful for me and my 4 children. I found the subject of the use of herbs with children broad, but lacking for children under 1 year. The many tips and recipes were wonderful and easy; the charts were helpful, and the "when to see your Dr" was especially useful.

I give it 4 stars for lacking matter for older babies and also because it is very pro-vaccination and there's almost a bias against those that choose against doing so. However, the mention is minimal, so if you can overlook the few mentions of the vaccination issue this is a very wonderfully written and useful book.

After months of reading this book, we put it away for a couple of months but brought it back out when we started sign language. It is fun signing with this book with appearances by a little white duck, green frog, black bug, and red snake sitting, swimming, and playing in the water.

Even if you don't know this song, the rhythm of the lyrics, the story, and the illustrations will keep your child's attention to the end.

The fact that it's been pc'd (everybody lives in the end because it was "just a play") is fine. It's less likely to be traumatic (as opposed to, say, Go Tell Aunt Rhody) for a small child.

Another keeper.

No matter what your field, there will always be the potential that you will become responsible for caring for a child. However, it is usually best to find the latest edition for any textbook.

Review Date: 2007-02-17
Any number of adjectives come to mind when I begin to contemplate the rescue of these magnificent creatures. Heroic, compassionate, courageous and dedicated only begin to describe the efforts of the team assembled by Don Hoglund and others. "Nobody's Horses" tells the amazing and heartwarming story of the rescue of some 2000 wild horses from the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico in 1995. It was a task wrought with danger from the get-go. And the fact of the matter is that the effort was none too popular with the animal rights crowd in this country either. But Don Hoglund knew better. He and his associates understood that these animals simply had to be relocated or they would not make it. The severe drought and lack of food at White Sands had made their long-term survival extremely problematic. "Nobody's Horses" is a fascinating piece of American history. The tale told by Don Hogland, DVM is simply riveting!
On a scorching July day in 1994, White Sands wildlife biologist Patrick Morrow made a gruesome discovery. Scores of wild horses were dead or dying near a watering hole on the range. When the dust had settled, a total of 122 horses had died. This was really the last straw. Those in positions of responsibility who really cared about these animals were convinced that most of them would perish if left to fend for themselves in such inhospitable conditions. An incredibly painful decision was made to move these horses off the land that they had occupied for centuries. The work would be difficult and extremely dangerous. It would require a team of intensely tough and dedicated individuals. That team would be led by Don Hoglund. Don was a respected veterinarian and a nationally recognized authority on the plight of wild horses. It is clear that he was the right man for this job.
"Nobody's Horses" recalls in exquisite detail the rescue of nearly 2000 wild horses from the deserts of New Mexico. In the course of this beautifully written book you will learn all about where these animals originally came from and how they had lived life on the range. You will meet several members of the team assembled by Don Hoglund including Les Gililland whose ancesters had owned several ranches in the area now occupied by the White Sands Missile Range. All of these folks were kicked off their land back in 1942 and given pennies on the dollar by the U.S. government for their land. These folks were told this was to be a temporary arrangement to help support the war effort. But these people never got to return to their homes nor did they get their livestock back and Les was still bitter. Some of the horses that were to moved were direct descendants of the animals his grandfather and great grandfather had owned. As someone who hails from the Northeast these issues were largely new to me and I found this entire story to be a real eye opener. In "Nobody's Horses" you will get a glimpse at the planning for this monumental effort and experience the trials and tribulations of the actual move. You will also discover just what happened to these horses once they were rescued. For the most part it was a very happy ending. As I mentioned earlier, "Nobody's Horses" is an extremely well written book that focuses on issues that I suspect most Americans know little or nothing about. A great read and a great way to expand your horizons! Highly recommended!

Raising teens is such a challenge! Diana Haskins book helps parents see their role as parents change from being a manager of a "child" to a coach of an "almost" adult. What a perspective! Her ideas are down to earth and doable for everyday parents--not a lot of jargon. Simple interactive techniques improve communication as parents spend the last few years of a child's "at home" life getting them ready for being on their own. Parents will be better people themselves as a result of practicing her ideas.

Easy reading, great advice

Yesterday I got the book. It took me a couple of hours to read, and that included the thinking time when I stopped reading to make associations with my past experience.

What the author, Diana Haskins, says makes a lot of sense. It left me thinking, "Wow, it's so simple. How come I never did what she suggests?" She encourages us to tell our teens that we "respect" them and "appreciate" them; "listen" to them so that we can "understand" them; and to ask them how we can "support" them. She stresses that we need to use those words because that is what they really want--to be respected, feel appreciated, to be understood and to have support; AND because it helps US remember that it is our job as parents to do those things so that they can become responsible and independent. Like many professionals who advise parents, she says we need to focus on the teen as an individual person, and not on a particular behavior.

Throughout the book the author describes her clients' cases, and how they used her guidelines to smooth things out with their teens. At the end of the book there is a section of questions parents ask, and one of those has to do with the "bad" things teens get involved in. She says that there are times we need to turn to others/community programs for help, but in the "singular relationship" between a parent and a teen, the parent should aim to have a positive influence by building up, rather than tearing down the teen.

There are exercises she recommends to get us into the habit of following her advice, and blank pages in the book for us to write down our thoughts as we go through them. Doing that would be ideal, but even without it, I feel I can improve the way I communicate with my sons, just beause I read the book and her advice will always be in the back of my mind.

If you want to be a #1 parent of a teenage adolescent-read this book! By applying the principles contained within this book, you are sure to become a #1 parent in teenagers' eyes. They are timeless techniques that really work! Yes, motivating teenagers to do what they are supposed to do is a challenge every parent must undergo. But books like this one make transfer the burden into a positive experience.

Another point about this book. I love the wonderful, practical examples that Diana gives you throughout the book. You get to see first hand of how others applied these timeless principles and how you can do the same. You will now have the tools to help your teenager go from "teenager" into a "mature young adult"

I think this book should be a mandatory reading for every parent on his or her child's 13th birthday. It's the best manual on how to parent a teenager that I have ever seen. Highly recommended.

This book addresses various issues in the management and harvesting of white-tails, including creating a suitable habitat, providing for proper food sources, analyzing deer movements and actually hunting these incredible creatures. A mature white-tail is possibly the most challenging game animal in all the world, and this guide will help you to manage your property in such a way as to produce a healthy, mature herd.

Having met Dr. Kroll some ten or fifteen years ago, I've had the opportunity to use his wisdom and knowledge for over a decade on dozens of successful hunts. You will find information in this book that you will find nowhere else.

The BEST Whitetail Book out there...

I have been an insanely avid hunter for 30 years- much to my wife's dismay at times... some may call it a bit obsessive- so if you are a touch like myself- you must have this book... it has it all!!! Dr. Kroll has hard data that shows you how to hunt- scientifically! The strategies are based on years of focused research and are very applicable to anyone who wants to be close to the elusive whitetail! Many tall tales are sung and praise is wretched forth for other books that hold a dimmer light- hey I have them all, and I would trade them all for this one book...and by the way- my hunting has improved - I have not gone a season buck-less since- and with that icing, the cake is in all the myths busted and the truth that has set me free from archaic hunting routines. Casting silliness aside- it is an excellent resource that has become an indispensable tool that sits atop my nightstand all year (Along with the Holy Bible).

Dr. Kroll is considered one of the foremost whitetail experts in the nation and provides practical, well researched advise in a well thought out and entertaining manner. This is not a book that provides short-cuts on how to bag a monster in three easy steps but instead a book that will provide the tools to be a better hunter and manager. You will simply not find a better book on the subject. As a side note, Dr. Kroll heads the Whitetail Institute for Sthphen F. Austin University in Texas and they may be a source for those of you who have had a difficult time locating the book.
