Lavishly illustrated well written overview of Pompeii

Review Date: 2008-03-20
Owning many books on Pompei and having visited many times, I approached this book not expecting to learn anything new. I was wrong. There are many Pompei picture books that repeat the same old stuff that I am leery of buying any more. This lavishly illustrated book shows the ruins and artifacts in detail that you cannot see with a throng of tourists milling about or rushing past at the Museo Archaeolgico Nazionale in Naples.

Centuries ago, a visiting philosopher remarked: never has such a great tragedy brought such great pleasure to posterity as did the eruption of Vesuvius in A.D. 79. The city frozen in time by the ash of Vesuvius has opened a window onto life in the early Roman empire. Maiuri invented a technique for making plaster casts of space left in the volcanic ash by the decomposed bodies of the victims of Vesuvius. It is possible two millenia later to see death agony on the faces of these victims. One of these victims, a chained guard dog can be seen curled up, howling in agony while straining against the chain that binds it. The author details the thousands of graffiti discovered, some sexual, some politically-oriented, some are insults directed at rivals. Many of these give insight into scenes of everyday life that allow the modern reader to feel a kinship to Pompeiians that is lacking even in our understanding of day-to-day life a mere few centuries ago. The ancient Romans, lacking our Christian moral code, expressed themselves in ways that until recently were self-censored as being too sexual, too self-centered or amoral.

As a large heavy folio it is too large to carry to Pompeii as a guide book. Look to the Knopf guide to Naples and Pompeii for a portable guidebook.

Highly recommended. Above average photo reproduction. Well written. A worthwhile addition to my Pompeii library.

Like all the other reviewers, I think this is a great book. There is one thing nobody else mentions, however (that I would have known had I read the product information more carefully). This book is huge! It overwhelms the average size coffee table I have, but I can't bear to put it away.

Gorgeous Book!

This book is stunning! The photography is breathtaking. The first class photos are huge, many double fold out. The essays are thorough - written by specialists of Pompeii in a gracious, informative style!

The photographs primarily cover art: the amazing wall paintings, furniture, architecture, gardens, rooms, and possessions of wealthy Pompeiians. The photographic perspectives are superb! Not included are the tragic plaster figures of victims and a map of Pompeii. Nor is Herculaenium depicted.

Nothing has been spared to make this THE BOOK of Pompeiian art. It is a "coffee table" book... heavy and large. The pages are the highest grade quality, very thick and glossy. It looks, feels, and reads like it should cost well over $100 and probably does at fancy book stores. It's the nicest book I have ever owned.

A huge book for a little price.

Lots of wonderful pictures and information. I was really surprised. It's not a book you can bring along to Pompeii (it's really heavy and large). That was my orginal idea. However, it's filled with amazing pictures and details that I'll note and try to see. It will also be nice to have after my trip because there is no way I'll have the pictures that this book provides. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in Pompeii or is planning to visit.

After a brief hiatus from reading, I came across this book in my library. Now, I can't wait to find the rest of the series. This story has great plot and characters, with an abundance of tragedy and a great hero and heroine that were made for each other. White Heather is the story of Catriona MacBryan and Robert, Lord Devonbrook, who after a fire killed his entire family became the Duke Of DevonBrook. The struggle that the hero goes through with his blindness from the fire is heartwrenching at times. Catriona is determined to make him love and enjoy life again. She teaches him that even though he can't see, he can still do the same things he always have if he sees with his heart. I really liked the fact that they became friends first and remained that way throughout all the things that befell them. That is what a real relationship is based on..friendship. I cried when something horrible happened, and I laughed when she pushed him in the water. Just a good time all around. One of the best Scottish romances around.

Exceptionally good book

White Heather is a very good book indeed, with interesting and likeable leads, a riveting bit of intrigue, and a delightful love story. One of the most remarkable things about the book is how skillfully the intrigue is woven into the rest of the story. Reding manages to keep the reader just slightly guessing until the very end. Yes, we're pretty sure we know who, but are they in league together? Is one a red herring? Is Robert mistaken in any of it? Perhaps the best mix of intrigue and romance I have read in historical romance. Superbly done.

Robert is quite a hero: different and yet embodying all the necessary elements. Catriona is a compelling heroine as well--both smart and idealistic--and so very suited to this man. They truly bring out the best in each other. I am, however, more inclined to agree with Robert than with Catriona about Ian. You knew that was coming, but Reding managed to embue it with power and surprise none the less. That's a hallmark of this book, in fact; Reding takes the usual elements and makes them seem fresh.

There are a couple of minor questions left over, but the vast majority is neatly wrapped up, and the reader is left feeling well satisfied. I'll be reading more from this author.

Charming combination of mystery, murder, romance & legend.

Jaclyn Reding's White Heather proves the magic that comes from Scottish moonlight and a rare sprig of white heather is not merely a fable, but a powerful rune. Robert Edenhall, Duke of Devonbrook, has lost all as a result of a deadly fire of unknown origin--his estate, his family, his fortune, his fiancée, even his sight. His friends and colleagues speak of murder, and point their fingers right at Robert! Attempting to escape the hell that has become his life, Robert leaves London for the solitude of Rosmorigh, one of his father's secret holdings in the West Highlands of Scotland. There, Robert vows to discover the murderer who stole his family from him, as well as the mystery of this hidden inheritance. In residence at Rosmorigh is a mysterious, trespassing ghost with silky skin that carries a handkerchief with the letter "C," and more secrets than any one person could solve. It seems that the ghost called Catriona MacBryan is not really who she thinks she is, there are murderers closer than one would expect, and the key to finding Bonnie Prince Charlie's hidden treasure is right under his nose. When it seems that he is all alone in the dark, a moonlit dip in a nearby loch with Catriona and love-sworn sprinkles of white heather helps Robert see the truth and bring back the light to a life that he thought was over. Jaclyn Reding's White Heather captivated me from the start--With a child being spirited away from its intended life to save it from a villainous relative and a man losing the lifestyle to which he was accustomed. Ms. Reding brings these two together in the most charming of ways, and lets us delight in the relationship that blossoms between them. This book was a charming combination of mystery, murder, romance, intrigue and legend. This book's merits include a teasingly clever plot with fascinating characters and provided a magical journey to romance that all will enjoy.

Absolutely one of the best books I have read in a very long time. I love the setting, the writing, the flow, the character relationships, everything. People seemed so REAL in this book. I read many books, and most of them I can just put down and pick back up later. This one, I stayed up reading it until I was exhausted, just so I wouldn't have to stop. I also enjoyed how neither one of them got really stupid and started hating or avoiding one another over some stupid argument, like happens in most every book I read. These two belonged together from the start, and they knew it--they just couldn't admit it at first. Wonderful book. I have only two questions--How did Angus get out, and how did the Colonel know where to find Catriona?

Jaclyn Reding great job and I can not wait to read what you have for us readers next.

Aggressive Whitetail Hunting is a superior book on hunting trophy whitetails. Frankly, I'm tired of books were the authors spend 200 pages telling me how great they are by recounting their exploits on fully guided hunts in hunting preserves.

Greg Miller is a true outdoorsman who hunts on public land and small farms in Wisconsin. His helpful tips, especially on hunting rublines are sure to make you a better hunter. As someone who must hunt heavily pressured public land I figured I would have to use Aggressvie Whitetail strategies to be successful. I applied the lessons learned in this book and bagged a nice eight point buck on public land.

If your a begginer, or someone who wants to bag a bigger buck this is the book for you.

This is a very informative book. I especially like the section on rub-lines and how Greg clears up misconceptions about scrapes and rubs (and rub-lines). I think the chapter on rub-lines is the most important. There is alot to learn in the rest of the book. E.g. chapters on hunting small tracts of land and performing "small" drives. If you want more information on rub-lines, check out Greg Miller's "Rub-Line Secrets" -- that one is a 5 star book.

Without a doubt, once one has read this gem of a book, it will be confessed that Steps to Christ is one of the Greatest Christian Classics of all time! One of the greatest things that the author, Ellen G. White, has done, is take the complexity out of a relationship with Christ that has been portrayed by too many who do not clearly understand. She shows a clear and steady path that can be followed by any and all who sincerely want to come close to Jesus. Because the author had such a great understanding of what it means to surrender, trust, and to follow Jesus, she is able to give in simple, easy to understand language, step by step guidance to bring the child of God into a life of humility, repentance, forgiveness, prayer, and service! As I was recommended to by my University Professors, to read this book at least once a year for the rest of my life, I have found over and over again deeper and deeper insight to my relationship with Christ, bringing me closer to His desire for me! My hope is that you will pick it up and read it too, that you may know the Sweet Jesus that I have learned of!

Of Ellen G. White's many astounding books, this is probably her best seller. Literally in the tens-of-millions. A beautiful guide to understanding and personally accepting Jesus Christ and His Grace. The perfect gift for anyone even considering following the Son of God. And despite false accusations from many, after reading her inspired works you'll better understand why she is America's all-time best selling female author, and most widely translated of any gender. A beautiful light to the real Biblical Jesus.

You'll never be the same. It opens to the heart the great impact of the Gospel and shows the way, the only Way, to salvation-Jesus Christ.

For Khalil Gibran, love was a way perhaps a supreme way of achieving self-realization and completeness as a human being. Anyone can live their life transformed by the all consuming power of an encounter with "The Beloved". Particularly in the Eastern cultures there are people trapped in joyless or organized marriages; their passions sacrificed to convention. It is these segments of people that Gibran has brilliantly targeted. Gibran can write very complex social issues in quite simple terms. He can make these issues in a way that can make the reader feel one is taking a walk in a quiet wood, or bathing in a cool stream.

During the course of his reading one can observe that Gibran is a fervernt and outspoken champion of the cause of human rights. He has waged a struggle to strengthen the recognition of youth's freedom of action in love, and abolish from the social structure some of the prevailing ancient marriage customs. He has a strong condemnation of traditions of pre-arranged marriages of children by their parents, in complete disregard of the wishes of those so betrothed.

The ill-fated story of Lyla in `The Brides Bed' is an eye witness account recorded by Khalil. Lyla with courage, anguish and heroism broke in fury from this custom. She brought as a result on her self consequences extremely tragic. This is best described in Khalil's prose:

"... Come you cowards! Fear not the specter of death whose greatness will refuse to approach your littleness and dread not this dagger, for it is a divine instrument which declines to touch your filthy bodies and empty hearts. Look at this handsome youth, he is my beloved and I killed him because I love him. .... We sought a bed worthy of our love in this world which you have made so small with your ignorance and traditions. .... Then the bride lifted her dagger towards the sky, and like a thirsty person who brings the edge of a drinking glass to her lips, she bought it down and planted it in her chest..."

In the `Vision' he describes the social convention issue faced by one:

".. I am a lost human heart, imprisoned in the foul dungeons of mans dictates; tied with chains of earthly authority, dead and forgotten by laughing humanity whose tounge is tied and whose eyes are empty of visible tears. ..."

"His power came from some great reservoir of spiritual life else it could not have been so universal and so potent, but the majesty and beauty of the language with which he clothed it were all his own." -- Claude Bragdon

Kahlil Gibran, on Love:
Love was the central theme of Gibran's life which he expressed in prose poems, and drawings; "Just reading the English translation for this collection of his love-related Arabic works makes my bones ache with the amazing insights he portrays through moving language." ankh fire

"Love has no other desire but to fulfill itself.
But if you love and must needs have desires, let these be your desires:
To melt and be like a running brook that sings its melody to the night.
To know the pain of too much tenderness.
To be wounded by your own understanding of love;
And to bleed willingly and joyfully.
To wake at dawn with a winged heart and give thanks for another day of loving;
To rest at the noon hour and meditate love's ecstasy;
To return home at eventide with gratitude;
And then to sleep with a prayer for the beloved in your heart,
and a song of praise upon your lips."
G. Khalil Gibran

The Beloved:
For Gibran, love was the eternal way for any human being to reach completeness, in self realization transforming their life by the power of the encounter with the beloved;
"Who among you would not cross the seas, traverse deserts,
go over mountains and valleys to reach the woman whom his spirit has chosen?
What youth would not follow his heart to the ends of the earth
to breathe the sweetness of his lover's breath, feel the soft touch of her hands,
delight in the melody of her voice?"

The Arkana Edition:
This Penguin Arkana edition of the unique selection of Gibrans writings on the mystical union in love and marriage which he dedicated to the spirit that embraced his spirit and the heart that poured its secrets into his heart, will kindle a fire in the emotions of poetry responsive readers like Ankh fire.
The introduction by Robin Waterfield is concise but eloquent and informing. The translator John Walbridge of Indiana University, who lived and studied in the Middle East introduced G. Khalil Gibran, in a nice biography analyzing his thought, and how he liberated traditional Arabic of his time, writing in a simple diction of modern new form. He compares the passion expressed in his early writings, with the its Lebanese setting and American influence. This new translation of the gifted poet's early Arabic composition is a contemporary fresh one which reflects the original text more closely.

G. Kahlil Gibran, 1883-1931:
I encountered Gibran before appreciating Arabic poetry, as a young kid I was amazed by the beauty of his art and the romance of his expression, in 'The Prophet.' Later, I read him in Arabic, before I found out how the Libanese emigrant poet has touched the Western hearts. This collection of Gibran's early stories, parables and poetic prose, were written in Arabic before his works were translated into English, earning him the nickname 'the Shelly of the Orient.' Many Arabic speaking intelligentsia, including my dad thought he has qualified to have been a Nobel Laureate!

"William Shakespeare in 'Measure for Measure' wrote 'The law hath not been dead though it hath slept'. In 2004 the Supreme Court of the United States revivified the 215 year old Alien Tort Claims Law in deciding that aliens who are victims of human rights abuses deserve protection when the abuses cannot be redressed in the country where they occurred. The case that earned the court's thoughtful attention was Filartiga v. Pena-Irala. The thrilling and dramatic story behind this case is very well told by Dr. Richard Alan White in his book Breaking Silence: The Case That Changed the Face of Human Rights. The book takes on added significance because Dr. White was an active participant in the drama, and his first person knowledge has produced a historically accurate and outstanding thriller of a story. The book is a well written, true story of the abuse of a man and his family by the military dictator of Paraguay and his henchmen. Richard Alan White puts you in the middle of the unfolding tragic events, beginning with the torture and murder of the son of a noted and admired Paraguayan physician, poet and artist. This is non-fiction at its best! "

Let me start by saying that I am NOT a non-fiction book reader in any way shape or form. BUT, this book was so amazing that (unfortunately) it read like fiction. You were mesmerizied by the drama, gripped by the human emotion and sorrowed by the resulting tragady. It is really the truth when we say that "true life is stanger than fiction". Richard Alan White can testify to it. He lived it. He suffered through it with the Filartiga family and we feel it in his words. DO NOT MISS READING THIS BOOK BECAUSE OF IT'S CATEGORIZATION; A WORTHWHILE BOOK CAN BE FOUND ANYWHERE! AND THIS IS ONE OF THEM.

Outstanding!!!! Extremely readable, educational, thought-provoking, inspirational, a mystery -- everything rolled into one. Having been in Asuncion with the author shortly after Joelito's murder, I can personally attest to the horror of this tragedy and its effect on the Filartiga family. My mother read the book, too, and liked it so much that she wants to join my Paraguay/Uruguay tour next year. I'll definitely put "Breaking Silence" on the recommended reading list for that trip.

Richard Alan White's account of the heroic Paraguayan physician Joel Filartega is a is an extremely captivating and well written account of fact that reads like the best of fiction. The story documents the case that affirmed that the US court system can protect aliens who are victims of human rights abuses that occur in other countries and can not be fairly adjudicated.

The author, a close friend of doctor Filartiga and his family, writes not as an observer but with the fervor and conviction of a participant in a remarkable drama. A must read.

In Breaking Silence: the Case that Changed the Face of Human Rights Richard Alan White tells the story of the family tragedy that led to the ground-breaking case of Filartiga v. Peòa. The case affirmed that the US court system provides protection to aliens who are victims of human rights abuses that cannot be redressed in the countries where the abuses occurred.
Elegantly written, Breaking Silence is a page-turner that should appeal to any reader. It's a great gift book because, published by a university press, it is not yet widely known.
The details of the Filartiga story come alive because White himself was part of the drama. While he was a graduate student living and studying in Paraguay, Richard Alan White became a close friend of a Paraguayan doctor, Jose Filartiga, and his family. A deep friendship continued long after White's return to the United States. When Dr. Filartiga's son was tortured and murdered by authorities, Dr. Filartiga contacted White instead of ignoring the torture/murder, as Paraguayan custom and politics dictated. White immediately flew to Paraguay to be with his friends. Breaking Silence is a story of the resulting search for justice.
Not only will this book appeal to lawyers and others familiar with the Alien Tort Claims Act and the Filartiga case, but also to those working or otherwise interested in the field of human rights. The book has special importance for those who hope to work in an NGO or to work internationally at the grass-roots level, because it shows how committed individuals can learn to use governmental systems to make a difference. It should be a must-read for students.
Breaking Silence recently received an "Outstanding Book" rating from theAmerican Association of University Presses Books Committee. University presses published 6,000 books this past year, and Breaking Silence was only one of six political science books to receive this award.
A longer review of this book is the feature story in Lawyers Weekly USA, April 26, 2005: "Family Tragedy Leads to Revival of Pirate Law."

A Little Gem - A book to Savor

Piper Berry is special. She has a dog named Booger, a small town that surrounds her (complete with waggling tongues) and her poetry. When Piper's family splits up she is left to make sense of it. While her parents act like children, Piper turns to writing and finds her world through her words.

Buttermilk Hill is an unassuming book - the cover looks like a "dog story" and preteenish....but remember - do not judge this book by its cover. What you will find when you open the cover is a touching story of a girl who notices everything, writes about a lot of it and has a lot to teach readers.

Unlike a lot of fiction for young adults and children, Buttermilk Hill does not preach or belittle its readers. The characters are treated with rescue and affection by the writer. This book is the perfect read for almost everyone I know.

At only 168 pages, the story is complete - touching and beautiful. I'd highly recommended it for readers who love a good story about people and how they cope with what life hands them. Relax, enjoy and savor. I'm really quite moved.

There is a yr. old girl name Piper Berry and she is spending the night at her grandma and aunt Lindy's who is the same age as Piper too. Piper and Lindy love to listen to grandma's bedtime stories all the time. On Easter Sunday during chruch service Piper and Lindy where sitting by Mr. Mack fell asleep and started to snore and they started to giggle and then Mrs. Mack poked Mr. Mack in the side and he woke up with a jerk. Then fell asleep again and started snoring again too. And then he started to fall on top of Piper then her moom came and pick him up off her and he didn't wake up and Piper's mom said,"he is DEAD," and Piper went running out of the churh crying. If you want to know what happenes to little old Piper you should read the book.

In This book(buttermilk hill) it relates so much to my life. My parents started off fighting and ended up separateing and getting divorced. Then I became a kid stuck in the middle of my parents fighting and bickering for anything. I started writing poetry at an early age and I even also read and entered it ina contest and won!.!.! And AS for Piper I had me a very best friend, by my side thru it all. This book related so much to my life as I read it I felt like I was the one writing it. Love IT. -Oreo-

Egypt: Yesterday and Today

After reading this beautifully illustrated table-top book comparing Egyptian scenes of the past and present, we purchased it for our granddaughter who is planning a career as an Egyptologist. The artwork is super, and the narrative is clear and crisp. An outstanding gift.

A good overview of a great artist.

Many books on David Robert's are small or not generous enough to allow you full scope to enjoy his paintings or they focus on his Levantine paintings.

This book is probably the best around that is not to expensive but gives you a feel for his grand Egyptian paintings. Some really nice ones of Sphinx, pyramids and also some of the lesser temples feature. The only other book which is now out of print that deals with this subject well is Peter Clayton's the Re-discovery of Ancient Egypt. Thames and Hudson.

thank you mister Roberts.

This book is no more available in France (I'm from Paris), and I saw some sketches of David Roberts a trip in Aswan, so wished discover his work. I am delighted with this book. The high quality of printing, the intersting texts (even for a french citizen) are what was expecting. The most spectacular sketches are those of Isis temple that show the paintings on columns and ceiling nowadays disapeared. It is also fascinating to see the evolution of egyptian civilisation from 19th century and today, regarding way of life and architecture.
In one word : thank you mister Roberts.

As in the previous Roberts books, this format of a real-life photograph side by side with the artist's rendering of the same scene gives the reader a very reflective perspective into the Ancient World.

This is a most amazing book, it has both water colours and photos of the sights of Ancient Egypt. As a reminder of a special holiday or a factual account it is the best. The size of the book makes it prominent coffee table book and easy to just pick up and dip into another wondeful page.

Mother Teresa reminds us of the power that is compacted in prayer. Prayer is perhaps the most powerful of all spiritual treatments and in this book, Mother Teresa reminds us that all our activity is governed by and made better by the power that flows through prayer.

Wonderful book filled with meaningful and easy to incorporate prayers that really do make a difference in your day and life. Just beautiful.

I've long known that a book's length doesn't guarantee
that it will be worth reading . . . such is the case
with EVERYTHING STARTS FROM PRAYER: MOTHER
TERESA'S MEDITATIONS ON SPIRITUAL LIFE FOR PEOPLE
OF ALL FAITHS by Anthony Stern.

It is short, but oh so powerful . . . and as the subtitle implies, it
is applicable for people of any faith.

As I was reading it, I kept having to pause to think about
Mother Teresa was saying . . . it was almost as if she were
talking to me directly!

For example, when I'm in a lazy mood, these words always
inspire me:

Yesterday is gone.
Tomorrow has not yet come.
We have only today.
Let us begin.

Almost every page contained some other tidbit that I'll want to refer
to again--and again . . . to cite just a few others:

* There is much suffering in the world-
very much. And this material suffering
is suffering from hunger, suffering from
homelessness, from all kinds of diseases, but
I still think the greatest suffering is being
lonely, feeling unloved, just having no one.

* Examine your heart first, though,
to see if there is any lack of forgiveness
of others still inside, because how can we ask
God for forgiveness if we cannot forgive
others?

* It is so easy to be proud, harsh, moody
and selfish, but we have been created for
greater things; why stoop down to things
that will spoil the beauty of our hearts?

And, lastly, there's this one which is one of
my all-time favorites:

* We can do no great things-only small things with great love.

Everything Starts from Prayer has been added to the books I use regularly. This book refreshes my spirit. If you have any value for prayer this book will pump it up (Maybe I should send a copy to Governor Schwarzenegger)! With Mother Teresa's ecumenical reach, no walls excluding anyone from prayer, I have gifted this book many times to people I know benefit. "Everything Starts from Prayer" is inspirational and one of my absolute favorites.

Everything starts with prayer means everything we do should begin with a prayer: an interview, house hunting, the day, a quick drive to the store, an exam. Such a deceptively simple title yet so profound. To start every 'thing' we do with a prayer - of help, thanks, or guidance - surely can only be wonderful for us and Him.
