Gorgeous Book!Review Date: 2007-08-17
The photographs primarily cover art: the amazing wall paintings, furniture, architecture, gardens, rooms, and possessions of wealthy Pompeiians. The photographic perspectives are superb! Not included are the tragic plaster figures of victims and a map of Pompeii. Nor is Herculaenium depicted.
Nothing has been spared to make this THE BOOK of Pompeiian art. It is a "coffee table" book... heavy and large. The pages are the highest grade quality, very thick and glossy. It looks, feels, and reads like it should cost well over $100 and probably does at fancy book stores. It's the nicest book I have ever owned.
A huge book for a little price. Review Date: 2007-02-19

A beautiful love story with plenty of mysteryReview Date: 2005-04-27
Exceptionally good bookReview Date: 2004-08-01
Robert is quite a hero: different and yet embodying all the necessary elements. Catriona is a compelling heroine as well--both smart and idealistic--and so very suited to this man. They truly bring out the best in each other. I am, however, more inclined to agree with Robert than with Catriona about Ian. You knew that was coming, but Reding managed to embue it with power and surprise none the less. That's a hallmark of this book, in fact; Reding takes the usual elements and makes them seem fresh.
There are a couple of minor questions left over, but the vast majority is neatly wrapped up, and the reader is left feeling well satisfied. I'll be reading more from this author.

Reflections on the path of the heartReview Date: 2001-04-17
During the course of his reading one can observe that Gibran is a fervernt and outspoken champion of the cause of human rights. He has waged a struggle to strengthen the recognition of youth's freedom of action in love, and abolish from the social structure some of the prevailing ancient marriage customs. He has a strong condemnation of traditions of pre-arranged marriages of children by their parents, in complete disregard of the wishes of those so betrothed.
The ill-fated story of Lyla in `The Brides Bed' is an eye witness account recorded by Khalil. Lyla with courage, anguish and heroism broke in fury from this custom. She brought as a result on her self consequences extremely tragic. This is best described in Khalil's prose:
"... Come you cowards! Fear not the specter of death whose greatness will refuse to approach your littleness and dread not this dagger, for it is a divine instrument which declines to touch your filthy bodies and empty hearts. Look at this handsome youth, he is my beloved and I killed him because I love him. .... We sought a bed worthy of our love in this world which you have made so small with your ignorance and traditions. .... Then the bride lifted her dagger towards the sky, and like a thirsty person who brings the edge of a drinking glass to her lips, she bought it down and planted it in her chest..."
In the `Vision' he describes the social convention issue faced by one:
".. I am a lost human heart, imprisoned in the foul dungeons of mans dictates; tied with chains of earthly authority, dead and forgotten by laughing humanity whose tounge is tied and whose eyes are empty of visible tears. ..."

When Love calls nothing can stand in its way!Review Date: 2006-08-27
"His power came from some great reservoir of spiritual life else it could not have been so universal and so potent, but the majesty and beauty of the language with which he clothed it were all his own." -- Claude Bragdon
Kahlil Gibran, on Love:
Love was the central theme of Gibran's life which he expressed in prose poems, and drawings; "Just reading the English translation for this collection of his love-related Arabic works makes my bones ache with the amazing insights he portrays through moving language." ankh fire
"Love has no other desire but to fulfill itself.
But if you love and must needs have desires, let these be your desires:
To melt and be like a running brook that sings its melody to the night.
To know the pain of too much tenderness.
To be wounded by your own understanding of love;
And to bleed willingly and joyfully.
To wake at dawn with a winged heart and give thanks for another day of loving;
To rest at the noon hour and meditate love's ecstasy;
To return home at eventide with gratitude;
And then to sleep with a prayer for the beloved in your heart,
and a song of praise upon your lips."
G. Khalil Gibran
The Beloved:
For Gibran, love was the eternal way for any human being to reach completeness, in self realization transforming their life by the power of the encounter with the beloved;
"Who among you would not cross the seas, traverse deserts,
go over mountains and valleys to reach the woman whom his spirit has chosen?
What youth would not follow his heart to the ends of the earth
to breathe the sweetness of his lover's breath, feel the soft touch of her hands,
delight in the melody of her voice?"
The Arkana Edition:
This Penguin Arkana edition of the unique selection of Gibrans writings on the mystical union in love and marriage which he dedicated to the spirit that embraced his spirit and the heart that poured its secrets into his heart, will kindle a fire in the emotions of poetry responsive readers like Ankh fire.
The introduction by Robin Waterfield is concise but eloquent and informing. The translator John Walbridge of Indiana University, who lived and studied in the Middle East introduced G. Khalil Gibran, in a nice biography analyzing his thought, and how he liberated traditional Arabic of his time, writing in a simple diction of modern new form. He compares the passion expressed in his early writings, with the its Lebanese setting and American influence. This new translation of the gifted poet's early Arabic composition is a contemporary fresh one which reflects the original text more closely.
G. Kahlil Gibran, 1883-1931:
I encountered Gibran before appreciating Arabic poetry, as a young kid I was amazed by the beauty of his art and the romance of his expression, in 'The Prophet.' Later, I read him in Arabic, before I found out how the Libanese emigrant poet has touched the Western hearts. This collection of Gibran's early stories, parables and poetic prose, were written in Arabic before his works were translated into English, earning him the nickname 'the Shelly of the Orient.' Many Arabic speaking intelligentsia, including my dad thought he has qualified to have been a Nobel Laureate!

Fantastic Discovery! Great Read!Review Date: 2005-07-12
Elegantly written, Breaking Silence is a page-turner that should appeal to any reader. It's a great gift book because, published by a university press, it is not yet widely known.
The details of the Filartiga story come alive because White himself was part of the drama. While he was a graduate student living and studying in Paraguay, Richard Alan White became a close friend of a Paraguayan doctor, Jose Filartiga, and his family. A deep friendship continued long after White's return to the United States. When Dr. Filartiga's son was tortured and murdered by authorities, Dr. Filartiga contacted White instead of ignoring the torture/murder, as Paraguayan custom and politics dictated. White immediately flew to Paraguay to be with his friends. Breaking Silence is a story of the resulting search for justice.
Not only will this book appeal to lawyers and others familiar with the Alien Tort Claims Act and the Filartiga case, but also to those working or otherwise interested in the field of human rights. The book has special importance for those who hope to work in an NGO or to work internationally at the grass-roots level, because it shows how committed individuals can learn to use governmental systems to make a difference. It should be a must-read for students.
Breaking Silence recently received an "Outstanding Book" rating from theAmerican Association of University Presses Books Committee. University presses published 6,000 books this past year, and Breaking Silence was only one of six political science books to receive this award.
A longer review of this book is the feature story in Lawyers Weekly USA, April 26, 2005: "Family Tragedy Leads to Revival of Pirate Law."

A Little Gem - A book to SavorReview Date: 2007-06-16
Buttermilk Hill is an unassuming book - the cover looks like a "dog story" and preteenish....but remember - do not judge this book by its cover. What you will find when you open the cover is a touching story of a girl who notices everything, writes about a lot of it and has a lot to teach readers.
Unlike a lot of fiction for young adults and children, Buttermilk Hill does not preach or belittle its readers. The characters are treated with rescue and affection by the writer. This book is the perfect read for almost everyone I know.
At only 168 pages, the story is complete - touching and beautiful. I'd highly recommended it for readers who love a good story about people and how they cope with what life hands them. Relax, enjoy and savor. I'm really quite moved.

After reading this beautifully illustrated table-top book comparing Egyptian scenes of the past and present, we purchased it for our granddaughter who is planning a career as an Egyptologist. The artwork is super, and the narrative is clear and crisp. An outstanding gift.

This book is probably the best around that is not to expensive but gives you a feel for his grand Egyptian paintings. Some really nice ones of Sphinx, pyramids and also some of the lesser temples feature. The only other book which is now out of print that deals with this subject well is Peter Clayton's the Re-discovery of Ancient Egypt. Thames and Hudson.

You'll almost feel as if Mother Teresa is speaking to you directly!Review Date: 2006-03-21
that it will be worth reading . . . such is the case
with EVERYTHING STARTS FROM PRAYER: MOTHER
TERESA'S MEDITATIONS ON SPIRITUAL LIFE FOR PEOPLE
OF ALL FAITHS by Anthony Stern.
It is short, but oh so powerful . . . and as the subtitle implies, it
is applicable for people of any faith.
As I was reading it, I kept having to pause to think about
Mother Teresa was saying . . . it was almost as if she were
talking to me directly!
For example, when I'm in a lazy mood, these words always
inspire me:
Yesterday is gone.
Tomorrow has not yet come.
We have only today.
Let us begin.
Almost every page contained some other tidbit that I'll want to refer
to again--and again . . . to cite just a few others:
* There is much suffering in the world-
very much. And this material suffering
is suffering from hunger, suffering from
homelessness, from all kinds of diseases, but
I still think the greatest suffering is being
lonely, feeling unloved, just having no one.
* Examine your heart first, though,
to see if there is any lack of forgiveness
of others still inside, because how can we ask
God for forgiveness if we cannot forgive
others?
* It is so easy to be proud, harsh, moody
and selfish, but we have been created for
greater things; why stoop down to things
that will spoil the beauty of our hearts?
And, lastly, there's this one which is one of
my all-time favorites:
* We can do no great things-only small things with great love.

Centuries ago, a visiting philosopher remarked: never has such a great tragedy brought such great pleasure to posterity as did the eruption of Vesuvius in A.D. 79. The city frozen in time by the ash of Vesuvius has opened a window onto life in the early Roman empire. Maiuri invented a technique for making plaster casts of space left in the volcanic ash by the decomposed bodies of the victims of Vesuvius. It is possible two millenia later to see death agony on the faces of these victims. One of these victims, a chained guard dog can be seen curled up, howling in agony while straining against the chain that binds it. The author details the thousands of graffiti discovered, some sexual, some politically-oriented, some are insults directed at rivals. Many of these give insight into scenes of everyday life that allow the modern reader to feel a kinship to Pompeiians that is lacking even in our understanding of day-to-day life a mere few centuries ago. The ancient Romans, lacking our Christian moral code, expressed themselves in ways that until recently were self-censored as being too sexual, too self-centered or amoral.
As a large heavy folio it is too large to carry to Pompeii as a guide book. Look to the Knopf guide to Naples and Pompeii for a portable guidebook.
Highly recommended. Above average photo reproduction. Well written. A worthwhile addition to my Pompeii library.
