This is a great book on suppleness. The routines range from area specific to 10, 20 30 minute routines. This book as been hard to find in my local store. I love this book - I've purchased one for a friend and am now purchasing for myself (again) and another friend. Clear instructions. I wish it were spiral bound though. My original book is all beat up from use, that's why the 2nd purchase.

I had owned a copy of this years ago but misplaced it. I was happy to find a used first edition (1995) hard cover copy on Amazon. There is a 20 minute stretching in the back of the book that is great. Can't comment on current edition.

This is an excellent book. I have several different stretch books, as I find I need variety, but this and the NYC ballet are my favourites. Leave them lying around so your daughter remembers to give you your workout :) Wharton's is good too.

The Supple Body is simply the best exercise book I have ever read. It is written in an easy-to-read style. There were plenty of photographs. This is the one book I would take with me anywhere. You don't need much space. ALL the exercises are do-able for an average person. The book combines stretching, yoga, and calisthenic exercises. No special equipment ( other than an ordinary kitchen chair ) is required. There are different routines to for varying time commitments and busy schedules. Even if you do other forms of exercise (weights, aerobics ), I would heartily recommend this book.

The Most Important Book I Have Read In Five Years

A group of high achieving African American high school seniors received this book as part of the "Achievers" program sponsored by the local chapter of the Links. As an African American in mid-career, I decided to get a copy for myself. It was the most important book I have read in at least five years.

The stories are, as a whole, optimistic but also bracingly honest about the obstacles these remarkable professionals have faced. It will inspire the young to believe that their goals are attainable. It will encourage those in mid-career to see that their progress, though uneven, is sustainable. And it will reassure those looking back at the end of their careers that their life's work has been significant if it has made it possible for even one or two others to achieve behind them. I read about one of these stories a day in the gym and frequently caught myself nodding in recognition at the experiences described.

The last profile in the book is of Deborah C. Wright, President and CEO of Carver Federal Savings Bank. The very last line in her profile, and thus the very last line in the book, is "[M]y prayers each morning are, 'God, just make me open to whatever the lesson is so I can get it and get on to the next one.'" AMEN!

Take a Lesson is a fantastic book that shares the personal stories of many successful African-American individuals who have succeeded with great distincition. Not only did I find the content entertaining, but the words ignite feelings of courage, hope, and persevarence that I'm sure will serve me well. I also think it is important to note that while most of those profiled stand at the cutting edge of capitalism, they also remain sensitive to social and human values, a balance which I think all should keep in mind.

Take a Lesson is a great book for people of all ages. It is a collection of advice from all the people I have grown to admire. In this book they are not putting on a professional face. They are telling the truth about how they struggled in their lives and businesses; and how they won out. I read one every day for inspiration.

Intelligible, Practical Presentation of Non-Western Thought

Review Date: 2000-06-21
Ken Cohen, like his friend and mentor Alan Watts, is not only a clear, strong writer; but also an inspiring lecturer/teacher.

Taoism is a 4 1/2 hr. course covering Taoism as religion, as philosophy, its influence on the arts and science of China, and how it connects and contrasts with other systems of thought, both Chinese and Western.

This course is presented on a practical basis with the goal of improving the quality of one's life and health. This is demonstrated right from the start with Ken Cohen's careful enunciation of Chinese words. Because of the relational nature of Taoist thinking, some areas could be difficult or even strange, except for the excellence of the presentation.

An unusual section is given on Chinese (Taoist) poetry. This type of poetry strives to express directly an experience from Nature, the experience being more important than cleverness with words. The principles are illustrated using Ken Cohen's own translations of classical poerty. Then he invites the listener to "cap" a poem by adding a line to one he provides. Finally the listener is encouraged to try alternating lines with friends, the poems finishing themselves.

Feng Shui (geomancy) is presented through the relational "5 element" scheme. But it is also pointed out that the Earth can be considered to have "meridians" and by using standing meditation, one can relate the body's meridians to those of the Earth.

Not only for Feng Shui, but also for the other areas of Taoist thought, Ken Cohen emphasizes the bottom line is harmony, balance and sense. Anecotes drawn from a lifetime of study are included to help demonstate important ideas.

I have found the CD Program "Toaisim" by Ken Cohen to be a very good overview, of Toaism, it was easy to understand the fundamental's, and it provides a great look into Taoisim.
I also own Ken Cohen's "The Way of Giqong Training Program", the "Taosim" course is a great compliment to it also.

This is a great overview of Taoism, wonderfully illustrating its origins, history, and modern practice. It is focused very much on encouraging an experience of the Tao rather than dry academic material. The academic material presented is done so as to enhance the experience of the Tao. He does a great job of presenting the seemingly arcane and complicated topics in digestible, bite-size chunks - even divination! It seems the author's specialities are feng shui and qi-gong. While other topics get a little bit of time, these two get a lot. I appreciated the author's inclusion of meditation exercises, but these things don't translate well to what I consider is the most common use of the audio CD: listening while driving. That said, I was impressed at his emphasis on cultivating tao and fostering an understanding of qi as relevant to all of the subtopics presented. I would recommend this CD/book to any friend interested in learning the basics of Taoism.

Rabbi Steinsaltz is one of the great Jewish teachers of this generation. His translation first to Hebrew and now in English of the Talmud have given many access to the Jewish traditional sources that they otherwise would not have had. In this book he essentially outlines the principles of the Jewish faith. The word 'Teshuvah' means ' to return ' and this process in Judaism is taken to be a lifelong and continual one. The Jewish person no matter how advanced in learning , or not is continually required to be striving to come closer to G-d. Rabbi Steinsaltz outlines here in a clear and effective way some of the ways by which this can be done. This book can be a great help to anyone who wishes to deepen in their practice of Judaism.

A practical guide to changing your life.

As a former Jew, I didn't think this book would have much to offer me, but I read it anyway. I'm glad I did. Much of the advice in this book can be applied to any religion or to any self-improvement goal. Its focus is, of course, on Judaism; and even here, I was surprised by what I learned. For example, newly observant Jews and former Jews actually have a lot in common. Both sought to experience religion more intensely. Former Jews did this by leaving a religion that is ridiculously burdensome and superstitious. Newly observant Jews did this by commiting themselves to a very exacting and demanding way of life. I must state that, in princlple, the cons of Judaism far outway the pros. Sabbath peace and festival joy do not compensate for the many demands or the unreasonable burdens and superstitions placed on the observer. Moreover, one can experience peace and joy without observing the thousands of picayune details of these "holy" days. Yet Steinsaltz showed me that Judaism can be fulfilling for some people.

Although presented as a guide for the newly observant Jew, this is the one book that I recommend to non-Jews who ask for a book about Judaism. Rabbi Steinsaltz' very insightful and yet succinct work on authentic Judaism is written for adults who expect their theology and religious practices to be on a level commensurate with their secular education.

Some very contradictions indeed. Judiasm does welcome those who want to be more observant. However the laws of the sabbath, dress, social relations, and keeping kosher are very strict.

The All or Nothing and Where To Start Chapters are very helpful. Rabbi Steinsaltz has a patient tone that one should not make the jump too vigorously to become observant. Start with lighting sabbath candles and maybe wearing tefilin is a good suggestion.

This book contains some very good information on some of the laws and their meanings. The kashering process is especially captivating. Some of the contradicitions are a bit confusing for those whom are not too informed. However, many can strike up interesting discussions. The glossary is quite helpful. A nice book for those who are considering taking the step to becomming more observant jews.

Three Times Chai: 54 Rabbis Tell THeir Favorite Stories
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-03-20
Reading this book is like attending a storytelling festival in print! Laney Katz Becker has invited fifty-four rabbis, from all branches of Judaism, to contribute their favorite stories. A great variety of genres are included: classic Bible stories, midrashim, folktales, extended jokes, and legends. The stories come from many different places, time periods, and cultures. Each brief story, most as short as a page or two, reflects a Jewish value and is written in an oral style. At the end of each story there is an instructive note from the contributor explaining the story's lesson and why it is the rabbi's favorite or how the rabbi applies the story's lesson. The book is divided into four sections: 1)Community -- stories about relationships, tzedakah, and tikun olam, our responsibility to heal the world; 2)Religion -- stories about Jewish identity, practices, and spirituality; 3) God's World --stories about the ways in which we relate to God and live according to God's plan; and 4)Outlook -- stories about our attitudes, choices, and quests for truth, honesty, wisdom, and courage. As wonderful as this book is, it would have become an even greater resource if sources for the stories were also included. Some of the rabbis do indicate in their personal notes where or when or from whom they first heard the story but about half of the stories have no sources given. Nevertheless, more source information, supplied by the rabbi or else by Laney Katz Becker who collected and edited the stories, would have added a valuable dimension to such a collection. Perhaps what could be included in the next edition of the book is an Index to the story sources or to an early version of the story, in addition to a glossary, which would contribute greatly to setting the midrashim, legends and folktales in a context and supplying much-needed identifying background. After all, it is written in our sacred texts that when we will give our sources, it will help the Messiah to come. This book of favorite Jewish stories is highly recommended. It is certain that storytellers, educators, clergy, parents and grandparents will find a treasure trove of marvelous stories to read and tell! Reviewed by Peninnah Schram

Rabbi's Favorite Folktales

Review Date: 2007-10-28
Some one screwed up here and got too cutesy - It's never a good idea to use an obscure title -- (Chai is the number 18 in Hebrew so 'Three Times Chai' means 54 - the number of stories in the book) -- and that's too bad, because a lot of people who would really love this book are going to pass right over the title without ever knowing about the gems, humor and joy inside.
What we have here are 54 Rabbi's favorite folk tales, parables and stories; collected and retold as short stories (most only one or two pages) with a quick paragraph at the end of why it's the Rabbi's favorite.
It's hard to say who this is aimed at though. Folktale lovers? A solid hit. Bubbe reading to a six year old? Not so much... a little too heavy on the morality and too light on the humor for the littlest kids. Should every Hebrew School Library have it -- of course! Will a lot of kids take it out? Not sure. Do tweens read folktale morality stories?
I loved this book. I guess you'll just have to try it out yourself.

I am a psychology teacher who reads novels for relaxation most of the time. I ran into this book on the net. It strikes me into something else other than just an ordinary novel. This book yields a true study of human feeling from the first to the last page. The story is easy to understand and artistically expressed through the life of a simple girl, Gamsi, the heroine in the book. If I ever teach a humanity class, I would probably put this book in my course. The cover is in black and white but the inside content is full of colorful emotions just the way every line was painted with words. That gives me the feeling which seperates good arts from bad arts. Good job, sir, Mr. Timer.

This novel is easy to read and flow with the story. It was written in a form of a memoir from a lady who went through the ups and downs of her life. Three men in her life to choose, we have to ask if her decision or her fate dictated her destiny. It's emotionally written and well painted with feeling and choices of wording. A nice and clean form of romance, real life but not fantasy. This book is quite a page flipper for a love story. I recommend it for readers who are getting married. I never heard of Richard Timer before. I ran into the book by accident when I ran a search. I always give a new author a shot. I've been so bored with all the romance novels these days as our society is so all wrapped up with sentuality and fantasy. I was not disappointed that I bought the Three-way Street. It's a different kind of love story. It's so clean and so refined for the uplifting spirit of romance literature. It's a cross cultures impact on the story to open up our eyes to another world. I learned a lot of how women in another country would think or how their up bringings can determine the way of life in thoughts, love and marriage. The book shows good descriptive feeling, emotion and soul in the three-way street that we might one day face it ourselves.

As one of the men that is very proud and honored to have been mentioned in Thunderbird Lounge, I am absolutely amazed at General Brandt's accuracy and detail. His sentimental chronicle of our personal experiences with the 33rd transportation Company is inspiring and emotional. Moreover, I am sure that this work will be intrinsic to future scholars who realize the historical significance of this unit with respect to both the Vietnam War and Army Aviation, and recognize the value of General Brandt's personal accounts. The scope of General Brandt's work is such that I am completely satisfied that the mission that we accomplished and the sacrifices we made are fully appreciated and realistically portrayed. He has told the story of real men at the beginning of a savage war with the compassion and thoughtfulness of one who was there.

The book is a keeper, and supports the efforts and brave acts of the many unsung participants at the outset of this strange venture of our country into a truly foreign land.

It is quite evident that Gen Brandt did considerable research into the events that took place during that time period. Some people might question the facts as presented about some of the operations or events, however, I think the book speaks for itself. The author did an outstanding job depicting how the Company functioned in that environment and how the officers and enlisted men endured the stress and strain of life away from home and family. The humorous side depicted in the book is probly as accurate as can be remembered and certainly contributed to the over all high moral of the organization. The book is well written and a pleasure to read.

I swapped my book, OUTLAWS IN VIETNAM, for Bob's book at the VHPA reunion in Las Vegas, 2002. This is a great book by Gen. Brandt typifying the events and life-style experienced at this early moment in Vietnam. The H-21's are graphically described in all their quirks and needs, as well as the skillful men who had to fly them. I find the earliest years of VN helicopter warfare fascinating to read, as these men not only laid down the tracks for we later aviators to utilize in mid-sixties on, but they quickly found out the political reality of Vietnam--which never changed. As Halberstam has stated, "the war was lost in 1964, not at the end of its duration." Our aviator job was tremendously enjoyed by all of us, but the Washington administrations never totally got it what a fluky scenario Vietnam was. We helicopter pilots surely got it, though.

Pi'-o-neer' a noun meaning: "One who goes before, preparing the way, for others to follow." There is no other way to define the original members of the 33rd Transportation Company (Light Helicopter)(CH21), except as pioneers in U.S. Army Aviation history! All original members of the 33rd left their families in the U.S. and quietly departed Ft. Ord, CA with their destination as-"unknown"! The move was classified as Top Secret and no one was able to tell anyone, including families, where they were going under penalty of court-martial. Vietnam was not classified as a combat zone in 1962, but as an advisory zone...but no one told the VC. Thunderbird Lounge is a very good historical book written by a man who experienced it all. 1LT Robert J. Brandt, a National Guard officer newly assigned, became the Commander of the 573rd Maintenance Detachment and, would be the only Commander of the 573rd Maintenance Detachment for the entire year.

The 33rd was originally to deploy to "unknown" locations in March of 1962. The orders were delayed and many of their helicopters were transferred to two other Transportation Companies (8th and 57th), which did deploy. Then the U.S. was scoured for low time CH-21's to replace the ones given up by the 33rd. The unit was again alerted to move in August of 1962. All aircraft and all other equipment finally departed for Hawaii by ship scheduled to stop in Hawaii to pick up the aircraft and equipment of a sister unit, the 81st, before continuing on. Then, the day before the main body of personnel was to depart Travis AFB, 1LT Brandt was diagnosed with pneumonia! After spending a night in the Ft. Ord hospital and receiving a massive dose of penicillin that led to a rapid improvement, Brandt convinced the Army doctor that he HAD to go with his unit the next day. Convinced by his improvement, the doctor loaded Brandt up with more penicillin and off he went. He recovered enroute with no ill effects.

The arrival at Tan So Nhut and Saigon was exactly as anyone who has been there remembers...a sensory shock and memorable! The year was 1962 and, Saigon was "unspoiled" by western influences; full of interesting foreign sights, sounds and smells. The USNS Croatan, carrying 40 cocooned helicopters and equipment, arrived within 48 hours, on schedule. Following unpacking, unwrapping and assembly, the 33rd's 20 CH-21s were flown to Tan So Nhut and ultimately to their new home on Bien Hoa airbase about 30 miles north of Saigon. The time was the monsoon season and no member of the unit had experienced the tropics or the problems the heat and moisture would ultimately bring to their aging CH-21 helicopters. The 33rd had arrived and "Wow", were the conditions primitive!

Throughout the remaining pages of Thunderbird Lounge, MG Brandt tells a complete story of the first year of the 33rd in Vietnam. People, places and incidents are described in very vivid detail. Almost every pilot is mentioned as well as many of the key enlisted men and NCO's. Using letters sent home to his wife along with the help of several comrades he is still in contact with, MG Brandt reconstructs many events that tell the story of their first year. Combat assaults, re-supply and medical evacuations are carried out in two aircraft flights because of engine and maintenance concerns. The red soil and extreme moisture conditions made maintenance of the CH-21 radial engines and wooden rotor blades very, very difficult. Brandt estimates that his engine shop rebuilt a CH-21 radial engine every 8 days! Thunderbird Lounge is a story of missions, maintenance and mayhem.

Never has a book been written after 40 years that is more complete with dates, names and locations. Every page is brimming with tales relating the many humorous incidents and events that made life in combat and the poor living conditions of Bien Hoa airbase bearable. Great photos are placed at the end of each chapter that compliment and highlight the people and incidents within the chapter. MG Brandt carefully remembers some of the sad events of the year, concluding with the loss of the first two 33rd pilots just after his returning home.

Thunderbird Lounge is truly a wonderful book. It tells a positive story about men as pioneers overcoming adversity, boredom and the enemy. Some of the participants may have seen things differently than MG Brandt, as he looks back after 40 years. However, no one can say he didn't tell it candidly, and fairly, as he saw it. After all, 40 years is a long time. 1962 was truly a time when real men pioneered the use of helicopters in combat and developed the textbooks for US Army Aviation airmobile operations. Those textbooks, as well as the lessons learned, were effectively used by thousands of pilots over the next 9 years in that "unknown" location so very far away.

In "The Torah Lifestyle" the author chooses the format of a Jewish man seeking answers as he considers marriage in order to walk the reader through understanding the traditional Jewish lifestyle. Rabbi Shafier successfully uses simple reasoning and insightful comments to help the reader understand such difficult topics as personal happiness, who you are as an individual, thinking patterns and how they affect our view of life as well as a myriad of others. The most impressive thing about the book is the simple, insightful and at times beautiful ways in which he explains basic Jewish thought. A highly recommended read for anyone seeking answers about Jewish thought and the meaning of life from a traditional Jewish perspective.

Rabbi Shafier does an incredible job of presenting life's purpose in a format that's engaging and stimulating. I found the book's greatest quality was its almost complete and accurate presentation of basic Jewish thought. The core of what one needs to know to begin exploring Judaism is comprehensively presented in an easy-to-follow dialogue. The author entertains as well, making this quite an enjoyable read.
I was inspired and gained tremendously from this book.

I can't recommend this book enough. It is one of the best books that I have ever read. It was great! Profound, yet fun. It deals with the most important questions: if GOD created the world what is its purpose, and if God created me, what is my purpose. I can't think of any more important question that needs to be addressed. And this book does it an amazingly moving way. I recommend this book to anyone is looking for answers. It addresses so many of the basic issues of life. It reawakened in me a joy for daily living, your section about the smell of oranges really hit home. It is trully a phenomanal work. I am now reading it for the third time. Thank you.

Great Book! Easy to read!

This thought provoking book offers a clear understanding of the purpose of a Jews life on this world from the traditional Jewish perspective. In addition, it opens a window into the lifestyle of the Orthodox Jew helping to demystify their ancient practices and customs. The author courageously tackled many of the "whys" of the world and life that nag us throughout our years. He presents unique, straightforward answers grounded in sound common sense. This 225-page book was an enlightening and refreshing read and is likely to give you the tools to a happier and more meaningful life.

Wisdom and comedy

It is not a bad thing that our most accessible source of wisdom is from late night TV comics. Our country celebrates newness and individual innovation, and the cleverness of the late night comic and his guests is a welcome antidote to the tawdry news that precedes it. But we have thousands of years of insight to draw on, also created as a counterpoint to distracting times, the cumulative ideas of a great religion. In this book, Rabbi Edward Feinstein brings us both kinds of wisdom. A colorful and brisk survey of Jewish thought, the book conveys Jewish teachings through the lens of a very modern mind, to the sensibilities of a skeptical adolescent, through the humor and pathos that makes a great comic. I loved the book for myself, and giving out two to each Bar Mitzvah- one to the kid, and one to the parents!

Rabbi Edward Feinstein is has a great mind and is a wonderful speaker and writer. In his book, Tough Questions Jews Ask, he responds to questions that have been asked by his students in the hope that his book will be a guide to young adults in building a Jewish life.

Rabbi Feinstein suceeds beautifully by answering some of the toughest questions anyone--regardless of age--can ask, and providing his deep, wise and often unpredictable responses in a way that both young and old can appreciate and understand. Such questions as: What are we here for? Why do terrible things befall us? Why pray and what do we pray for? are explored.

The book contains insightful questions and the Rabbi gives meaningful answers. Ultimately one lession of the book is that we grow by learning to ask the right questions, listening to the responses and then asking even deeper questions.

This book is great for anyone interested in growing, learing and asking.

This is a really great book that helped me wake up to how my children really should be eating. My whole family drinks the protein shakes...even my 3 1/2 year old son who is pickier than all get out. When my 1 year old daughter was 6 months old I became very ill and had to discontinue nursing due to the medication that I was on. I immediatly put her on the goat milk formula found in this book, and she has absolutely thrived on it. I would recommend this book to any mother, new or not, simply for the benefits that her whole family will enjoy due to the bright light that this book shines on healthy, affordable, feasible, eating and living.

My family had been suffering from severe chemical posioning. We all had difficulties with foods we were eating, because of the damge to our digestive tracts.Although we had found a altenative Dr. and were on the road to recovery we by were no means healthy. By the grace of God, I found out about the Broer's. After researching and reading this book and Max. Energy I found out the foods we are putting into our bodies can't and won't allow us to detox properly. Astounding info on the "food" we are consuming in massive quanities. If you have any concern for your children's health and your own this is a must have book!!!!!!

A must have for any parent with a child of any age!

This is an incredible book and I highly recommend it to anyone who wishes to prevent health problems rather than just react to them. The information is easy to understand and the author explains the principles behind her recommendations so you can understand and explain it to others. Everyone I have allowed to lay their hands on my precious and much loved copy haven't been able to put it down! I have yet to find another nutritional guide for infants and toddlers that is this informative and indepth about the short and long term effects of childhood nutrition.

Also her husband, Dr. Ted Broer, has wonderful books and cassette tapes on adult health and weight loss. His work is very indepth also because he is not only an M.D. but also a Biochemist and fitness expert. His information for adults is just as informative and life changing as this book by his wife. I highly recommend anything you can find by this duo.

This is a very informative and eye-opening book!

Sharon Broer speaks from experience of having raised a healthy child, profiting from the mistakes she learned as a child. Her book is valuable for all parents who want to be assured they are giving their children the best nutritional food available. She makes her book sound so friendly, yet very informative and educational. I highly recommend it to any mother of an infant and beyond.
