This was another easy book to read from Doug Staneart. The information is great if you have anything to do with Leadership or Sales! Gianing "Buy-In" is one of the greatest skills a leader can learn. If you are in the sales industry, you will want to read this and start influencing those clients. The 28 Tips are broken out in an easy to understand method. Like some books, you are not left wondering what that last tip was...

Don't have a lot of time to spare? Don't worry. Mr. Staneart follows the "keep it simple" method by dividing the book into short sections, each one devoted to a particular principle that is well illustrated with practical examples. Thoroughly applicable by using fun and interesting examples, I don't think many readers will regret checking this one out. Yes, some of the insights may be obvious, but it brings to the forefront of the mind ways we should interact with others...and that's why it's so valuable.

This book is a quick read with a lot of real world examples and practical tips that you can apply right away. The 28 tips are a comprehensive guide to becoming a better leader and, really, a better person. If the principles were really taken to heart and applied "one a day" as suggested, the shift in attitude, perspective and influence would be tremendous.

Doug Staneart's book "28 Ways to Influence People and 'Gain Buy-in'" is is one of the best books in my extensive personal library on leadership. His easy to follow principles are engaging and full of real life examples that realy drive the point home. I am taking his advice and appling one of these priciples each day. Not only it has improved my management skills; I've also noticed a postive influence on relationships with everyone I come in contact with. Appling the priciples really works!! I highly recommend this book.

This book brings together in one place a tremendous amount of knowledge about being a better manager. Overall the principles really stretch your skill sets. Some of them seem simple and I found myself thinking, "Doesn't everybody do that?" Others were more difficult and initially left me wondering, "Why?" Mr. Staneart's easy to read style includes many examples and stories that illustrate the "why" and give you the benefit for each principle. I have read many books on leadership, sales and improving relationships. This book brings it all home in one place. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and look forward to practicing each of the principles until I have them all mastered. I highly recommend this for anyone who manages others or who wants to in the future.

This is an amazing book that gives real life situations for step-families with clear guidance to improve and strengthen your step-family. It is truly written from the heart and can be of significant value for those who experience the challenges of a step-family with particular emphasis on improving the situation for the children. Every person in this situation should read Kelly's book. There are also some great ideas that can be used for traditional families.

Kelly Kirkendoll Shafer's 29 Ways to Make Your Stepfamily Work is a more than a self-help book...it's a bed-side reference manual for every stepfamily. It provides on-target information I learned the hard way when I began my stepfamily experience twenty years ago. We made it, but Kelly's book would have made the making it easier. I would recommend it not only for stepfamilies, but for grandparents and aunts and uncles of stepfamily units. Know a stepfamily you love? Give this gem of a book. But do yourself a favor. Get yourself a copy first, so you will be ready to help in the bonding process. You'll also find info that is beneficial in all relationships...and you'll want to recommend it to everyone you know who it trying to make family meaningful in today's world.

Ever wondered if anyone *really* understood you, or if you could *really* understand yourself? Wonder no more. "Three Sides of You" is beyond Myers-Briggs or IQ tests. Sandra Seich's book examines how you think, how you work, and how you feel--the three sides of you--and shows how each of these separate parts work to create the "whole" you. After taking the test the "Three Sides of You" book will reveal a deeper part of yourself in an amazing way. You'll never see yourself, or others, the same way again.

Unlock Your Life Purpose

Review Date: 2003-10-24
3 Sides of You by S. Seich is a unique book built around a personality test that is available only on the web. The test itself is called the Profilerâ„¢ which is a self-perception inventory. The Profilerâ„¢ contains three sections of 56 questions (168 questions total) which test how you Think, Work, and Love. When you've finished the test, the results are a 3-sided profile and Boss Style. The possible combinations are 2,744, which makes for a very individualized assessment.

In the ANSIR system (ANSIR stands for A New Standard In Relating), an individual is assigned a Profile Boss. Boss determines Life Purpose; that is, this purpose draws together innate strengths and talents of dominant support Styles (the other 2 Styles in the profile that aren't Boss) and pretty much dictates and shapes these Styles toward self fulfillment. Life Purpose is never Thinking--only Working and Emoting. This is the drive and juice for our individual purposes. Five of the Styles find fufillment through work (Idealist, Visionary, Healer, Philosopher, and sometimes Evokateur) and the rest of the Styles find fulfillment through the Emoting realm. Since it seems that the areas the individuals are most unhappy in are work and love, it makes sense that the Life Purpose Boss would be in either of those two realms.

According to the book, Thinking is a discernible, predictable pattern of balancing and applying knowledge. How individuals process order, solve problems, and rationalize outcomes. Working is the conscious application of knowledge according to acquried skills and innate abilities of individuals. Emoting is an unconscious response pattern guided by unique intangibles, such as emotions, feelings, and nature. Boss (Life Purpose) is your profiled "why"--your reason for being.

The 14 Boss Styles in the ANSIR system are as follows:

The Physicals Extremists; Realist Keenest intellect is through physical interaction.
The Instinctives Scintillator; Sentinel Keenest intellect is from muscular feedback/gut smarts.
The Logicals Diligent; Sage Keenest intellect is rationalization.
The Practicals Eccentrik; Idealist Keenest intellect is solution determination.
The Emotionals Kinsmen; Empath Keenest intellect is emotion sensitivity.
The Intuitives Visionary; Evokateur Keenest is emotion-based guidance.
The Spiritualists Healer; Philosopher Keenest intellect is self-reliance.

I've have taken many personality tests on the web and on paper, but I've never encountered a personality system that's based on self-perception and self-propulsion, and that concentrates on the individual as knowing what's best and why. Also, the Ansir system is heavy on what's right with you as opposed to why you're defective and need "fixed". Ansir maintains that there's nothing wrong with you--that it's a matter of removing reticence, and living your life as born and meant.

3 Sides of You: Unlocking The Way You Think, Work, and Love is a hefty 516 pages that gives you indepth and practical information on not only your own profile, but all of the ANSIR Styles. Sections in the book include indepth Profiles for each of the 14 Styles--in each of the 3 realms, as well as thorough information on Boss/Life Purpose, work attributes and occupation matches to plan a more fulfilling career, and Style compatibility.

If you take the ANSIR Profilerâ„¢, but find your results inaccurate, this could be for several reasons. A main reason is that you've been living someone else's life with someone else's ideas of what's best for you. You are encouraged to re-take the test until it fits, and the book is very helpful for understanding the profound and unique differences among the 14 Styles if you need more clarity on your profile.

I've owned this book since it first came out, as well as its precursor Rare Conversations that is no longer available. I've also been a student of personality for as long as I can remember, and I've yet to come across a personality system that is as affirming, eerily accurate, thorough, and insightful as the ANSIR system.

In conclusion, I highly recommend this book if you want to understand self and others, and if you've been short-changing yourself by living a mediocre life--and not living as born and meant.

The author, Sandra Seich, in her unique writing style literally unlocks your thinking style, working style and emoting style unlike any other way you might have experienced in the past. Not only can the reader discover the "who" of what they are, they now can discover the "why" - their reason for being or their mission in this life.

This work will no doubt result in changing the way we think, feel and work from now on. There are some practical applications for corporations who are serious about changing the way they hire, motivate, teamwork and retain their employees. The knowledge in this book is not for the weak minded. This book has the power to actually change the way we apply for work and how positions are filled by the "right" individual.

As a management coach, I highly recommend this book to coaches, executives and individuals.

I received my copy in the mail yesterday and I haven't been able to put it down. I have learned more about myself from this book than I thought anyone could know about me. S. Seich's writing will have you bouncing up and down the full range of emotions. One page I'll be laughing at how accurate the descriptions are. A while later I find myself bawling like a baby because somebody understands -- I'm a grown up for God's sake! The thing that stands out most to me is it's okay to be different. This is a feel good book that doesn't preach or want you to change. The author just talks to you like he's telling you a story about someone you both know. Later you realize that a powerful message was received - like a parable. It will change the way you think and feel about yourself. As for me, I feel a lot more confident and not so concerned about being different from other people. I think 3 SIDES OF YOU should be compulsory reading for parents & teachers -- for the sake of the kids.

Finally, Someone Understands!

Review Date: 2001-03-09
Finally, someone has come up with a personality profile which recognises that we are three sided human beings. We think, we work and we love. We might be rational at work and weepy at the movies; punctual but scatterbrained; mundane during the week but living at breakneck speed on the weekends. The all of you is revealed in this personality typology which is simple, but has over 2,700 variations.

This excellent book (or its softcover version) is not a self help manual, nor a management text. It is a self perception text that cuts to the core of over 2,700 profiled personalities, and describes them with rare perception and detail. Each profile will receive about 15 pages of exquisitely crafted description. Each chapter focuses on the positives of the style. Nothing in this book will tell you what to do or how to do it. Indeed, the message is "understand yourself, be yourself".

Want to communicate better with your colleagues and loved ones? Well then, find them in here, too. Understand why they always set the table right handed even although you're left handed. Explore why a simple discussion work discussion escalates into defensiveness. Have a look at your own "Achilles' heel" (as they call it), and see where you might be stepping on someone else's.

This is a "feel good" book, not because it's full of little catch phrases, but because it's full of the truth, about you. Finally, someone understands.

Not only is Lee right about the mistakes that most managers make (myself included sometimes), but he has great ideas about how to overcome those problems. He has a good sense of humor, but is right on about the problems that managers can't afford to make anymore. One of his best pieces of advice is about following up on the measures that you set, instead of just setting them and assuming your employees will always measure up. It's not about second guessing your people, it's about making sure they understand what their objectives are, and Lee gives some good advice about how to go about doing that. This is a very important book for all managers, whether they have a large team or only a few people. Lee has hit the nail on the head with this one.

This is a great book for any businessperson who has the difficult task of managing people. Lee does a great job of encapsulating the mistakes that most managers make, and his suggestions for how to handle them are practical and effective. One of my favorite chapters is Mistake 9, Giving Preferential Treatment to Family Members. I had worked for a family business once when I was very young, and I actually ended up leaving the company because they were so biased towards each other that it was impossible to move up. When I finished reading that chapter, I really wanted to send them a copy of the book!!
Lee has crafted a well organized and entertaining book that is a must have for all managers.

This book is special because sometimes, we don't even know when we're "shooting ourselves in the foot." I thought I knew everything about managing, but it outlined some great strategies and pointed out a few things that I didn't even know I was doing wrong! That's why I like this book more than other managing resources that I've looked at; it not only tells you what to do right, but tells you what NOT to do as well.

Among these are some very interesting mistakes that alot of managers might not even realize are mistakes. Also included is a reccomended reading list of other books that contribute to the effectiveness of a manager. This book is a great resource for any manager that would like to avoid problems and miximize their effectiveness.

Bill Lee has done something truly remarkable. He has written a book that while jam-packed with practical information for managers, reads like a best-seller. I couldn't put it down. The author writes in such a direct and engaging way that the experience of reading this terrific book feels almost as if you are having a conversation or consultation with him. The book has 30 chapters. Master them and you will put 30 top-notch management tools in your briefcase. This author clearly knows his stuff, and he knows how to explain it with no wasted words. The six appendices are worth the price of the book alone. If you are -- or would be -- a manager who would like to work more effectively, achieve at higher levels, and get better results on your bottom line, the first thing you should do is get yourself a copy of "30 Ways Managers Shoot Themselves in the Foot." You won't regret it.

This was the first cookbook I ever bought, back when I moved into my own apartment about 12 years ago. Many times I relied on the straightforward recipes and advice to easily create wonderful meals. These are the kinds of recipes you can knock off at a moment's notice, invite a few people over for dinner, and listen to them rave about your cooking for YEARS after that.

To keep in mind, they are mostly Italian-American recipes, so they're more hearty immigrant fare than complex northern italian-style (though there is a whole chapter on risotto - which breaks down the process so simply that literally anyone can make homemade risotto). Also no pictures, but every word of the text is helpful.

Very highly recommended!

Fun ideas for enjoying your dog and showing him extra love
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-07-26

I enjoyed the ideas in this charming book and think any dog-crazy person would appreciate this light and fluffy offering as well. Here are some ideas from the author, test-driven by me:

1.Keep a toy chest for all your dog's playthings. This is a good one, since my dogs have so many toys that people think I must have children in the house. I leave out three toys at a time, maximum, and rotate the toys as the dogs get bored. Each time a new toy comes out of rotation, they think it's brand-new.

2. Give your dog a nickname. You know he's already got one anyway. It may as well be official. Frodo responds equally well to Frody, Little Dude, Freak and Goober.

3. Once a week, put your dog's bowls in the dishwasher. Excellent advice. I don't want want bacteria building up in those bowls any more than in mine.

4. Make a doggy scrapbook. Well, I have not gone so far as to make a plaster cast of Frodo's little puppy paws, or include hair from his first grooming, but he does have a framed print placed prominently in the living room. And, of course, a picture in my wallet.

5. Brush his teeth. My dogs love their toothbrushing sessions. I use a toothpaste for dogs (tastes like chicken), with their own special dog toothbrushes (made for their softer enamel). Once I am done brushing, I let them gnaw on their brushes a bit. Hey, I've also got tartar-control dog biscuits and flossy-thread rope toys. No one should have to deal with bad dog breath.

6. Don't forget the Christmas stocking. The dog stockings are shaped like bones and full of yummy dog treats and squeaky toys.

7. Buy doggy booties. I have some all-terrain dog Muttluks for seriously rocky hiking trips. My dogs walk funny in them at first, then shrug and get used to it. When I remove the boots, I look at the leather bottoms. All those scratches would have been on my dog's tender pads. Booties are also nice for keeping pads off hot asphalt, and fleecies are great against winter's ice and salt.

8. Take him swimming. A nice activity that I'm going to have the canines do when they start aging. Dogs are very prone to arthritis, and swimming is a no-stress sport. I have little dog life vests, so they can exercise their limbs even in their golden years.

9. Pray with your dog. One of the book's nicest suggestions is saying grace with your dog at mealtimes, offering thanks for his loving presence during a cuddle, or allowing some quiet space to be reflective together each day. I once heard a psychic say dogs are very spiritual. It's probably true.

10. Buckle up. PetsMart and other pet companies design seat-belt attachments that clip right onto your dog's harness. In an accident, you don't want your favorite ball of fur to come flying at your head or against the windscreen. It also keeps dogs from climbing into the driver's lap or all over your passengers. (The book mentions that some new vehicle models from Saab, Audi and Subaru even come with their own dog-restraint systems. How's THAT for cool?)

There are 40 other unique ideas, and the author also published an edition made for cat-lovers. Anyway, it's a cute book, and at under ten dollars, would make a decent gift.

Fun book, and fun to apply

There are some old tricks in here, but unlike dogs -old humans and young too- can be taught new tricks. I like reading books about things I can do for other people....my 3 dogs can't read so someone had to read self-helps for them right? HAHA...This book will show you creative new ways to reward your dogs, and remind you of some of the ways we need to care for our pets that don't occur to us every day. My beagles sure do love the massages!!!

This book offers great ideas for any dog lover. I have owned dogs all my life, and love to pamper them but Ms. Moore gave me so many ideas that I had never thought of. I hope she writes a second volume!

Rocky (my pet maltese) and I enjoyed this book. There are many great ideas and thoughts for caring for your dog. I did have one concern about giving your dog a pill in a grape. My vet says grapes are not good for dogs. Other then that, the book had wonderful insights and fun ideas.

Not necessarily for the froo-froo pet!

Moore offers pampering methods that your dog will actually acknowledge, enjoy and benefit from. The suggestions have the dog's health in mind and even offer solutions for common problems (like keeping your dog still during grooming,etc.). It's more of a "how to care for your dog better" book and covers all sorts of situations like travel and healthy dog recipes. The short sections and cute drawings make this a pleasure for any dog guardian to read, regardless of breed,

Sheila Key's good nature, warmth, and wonderful humor sparkle on every page, and Peggy Spencer's wise advice balances it perfectly. This book is one of the best gifts you'll ever give any 50-something friend...or yourself.

Consummate Achievement!

What a consummate achievement this book is. Written by Sheila Key in a folksy, colloquial style, it imparts great wisdom to those who would like to know how to look at their 50's and beyond as a time of fulfillment and joy. Peggy Spencer also did a great job. I like the "doc in the box" feature - it adds intellectual and thought provoking elements to each of the "ways."

I highly recommend you buy this book and enjoy!

It wasn't so very long ago, when 50 was deemed the beginning of the end. Soon you'd retire and then wait to die. Fortunately, times are changing. Better health care options mean that we are not only living longer but our so called golden years can now be spent doing what we want to do.

50 Ways to Leave Your 40s is essentially about celebrating a new phase of life and making the most of it. Perhaps, this is something we should do at every stage of life. Just take a moment to celebrate and look to the gifts that each age brings. Still, for many, 50 is the start of a whole new way of thinking and being. They've spent there entire lives focused on making money, getting ahead, succeeding in their careers, and taking care of family. Suddenly, all of those things seem to take on a different hue. It becomes more important to take care of oneself and have a little fun. Sometimes, it can be a very difficult transition. 50 Ways to Leave Your 40s provides the reader with 50 ways to celebrate, enjoy, and explore this new existence.

Have you ever hoped to meet the author of a book you really enjoyed, thinking that you're just bound to enjoy that person? And then, you actually meet that author and think, YUCK?

Well, that's not the case with this book. If you are lucky enough to hang out with Sheila Key sometime and you're like me, you will come away thinking, "geez, not only has she actually LIVED this book, but she is a heck of a lot of fun, too."

I know, because I've known Sheila for 20 years, and even though we haven't seen each other in about 10 years, I've looked forward every New Year's to receiving her cleverly homespun newsletters. Through them, I've watched her beautiful children grow and seen how Sheila's smiling face has somehow retained that youthful look of mischief mixed with excitement--no doubt related to some new and interesting pursuit.

Sheila knows a thing or two about nurturing wonder, mental and physical health, creative stimulation, and a juicy existence. So I for one was thrilled when she told me about her book project. Having been her editor when she wrote for a newspaper, I grew accustomed to Sheila always exceeding my expectations (which are exceedingly high). And, since I was just entering my 50s and really needing such a book, I knew Sheila would not let me down.

I've just started reading, and if I wait until I finish it to write a review, that could take some time. As I figured out after the first chapter, this isn't a book you skim through. It's one you dip into on a regular basis, drink in inspiration, and, thus recharged, go try something new--or remember that long-forgotten thing that brings you joy and lightens your step.

I'll be back when I have more to report. For now, I just wanted to say I love this little book and am looking forward to knowing it better. As I slog through my long work days (finishing a book of my own), it is my reward at the end of one day--and an inspiration for the next.

Any mid-life reader will find plenty of enjoyable and worthwhile nuggets. You may not agree with all of the advice in this book but there is wide range of topics and they are all delivered with much wit and wisdom. The author plays the role of a good friend who is telling you just what you need to hear, not necessarily what you want to hear. The truth is cushioned with optimism and humor and floats to the surface in bite sized pieces. Instead of telling your best friend that they need to floss, watch less TV, get a prostate exam or unwind with a road trip-- give them this book and let it do the work of telling the truth with pizzazz. By the way, get your own copy because you need the same counsel.

This book is excellent in presenting several different ways to internalize scripture and apply it to everyday life through various prayer techniques. Could be used as a study source, to spark new ideas, and/or to examine one's own prayer life.

Blythe has gathered an incredible number of spiritual practices and disciplines, and has put them together in meaningful and useful ways. Further, the facilitator's guide at the end of the book is practical and helpful.

I wholeheartedly recommend this book to all people who are facilitating spiritual growth groups or spiritual retreats.

How grateful I am to have a book that offers practical and loving instructions for prayer, without being didactic, paternal or narrow. I especially appreciated the way Blythe reminds us that what we most need to do when attempting prayer, is show up and let God take it from there. Read her introduction to "general principles of group leadership" on page 133 to see what I mean; she counsels small group leaders to call on their gifts and skills while also recognizing that God will work in ways both seen and unseen. I was also glad to be able to learn more about various spiritual exercises that I have heard about and wanted to try, but wasn't sure how or where, to start, or who to ask. As I read 50 Ways to Pray I continually thought of people I know who would appreciate this book, including teenagers. It would form an excellent basis for a group retreat or workshop, as well as personal spiritual exploration. Through her matter of fact yet reverent approach to the Mystery, Blythe offers the reader a model of how we might do the same.

If your prayer life is, as Anne LaMott puts it, basically "Help me, help me, help me!!!!" and "Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!" and you want to do something about it, this book is for you. The author goes through 9 different prayer styles - contemplative prayer, praying with scripture, praying with the imagination, praying with media, to name a few - and within each style gives several different ways to pray in that particular style. She gives a very brief history of each style, and clear, step-by-step directions on the specific prayers. Also included is a leader's guide for use with groups. I am using it with my group with great results. We are a varied mix of ladies in age, education, experience with praying, and all are finding it helpful and enriching of our prayer lives. As the leader, the book is very user friendly and easy to use while maintaining the depth and integrity of the subject.

Many ideas for protecting the world's oceans and the creatures therein...

I picked up a copy of this book at the 2007 Hawai'i Conservation Conference, where author David Helvarg was a keynote speaker. Helvarg is president of the Blue Frontier Campaign, an ocean advocacy group.

50 Ways to Save the Ocean is a book with a mission. That mission is to convince the reader that:

1. The oceans are in trouble and need your help.

2. There are things each person can do to assist in the conservation of our oceanic resources, even if you live in Kansas.

Most of the ideas are good, and I appreciate that Helvarg went beyond the "donate money to..." strategies that most Americans get in their weekly mail solicitations (although he encourages you to donate money to a variety of causes and organizations). He promotes activism: volunteering, writing, and lobbying. He notes the power of consumerism in affecting how the ocean's resources are exploited ("follow the money").

I found that I do about 3/4 of the actions he recommends. The question is, how does this information get into the hands of those who are not already involved in ocean protection issues?

This is an excellent book to help teach your family about caring for our oceans! The ideas and illustrations are fantastic to read with kids. Almost all of the suggestions can be accomplished as a family, too. Going to the beach, going on a whale-watching trip, visiting tide pools, eating healthy and sustainable seafood, etc., are all great family activities! This book makes it easy to get your whole family together and interested in saving our oceans. Also really helpful in giving extra meaning to family activities, as everything can be prefaced with an interesting suggestion from this book. It will certainly also improve your kids' self-esteem, knowing they are helping the environment. On top of that, it is a great read!

Fifty Ways To Save The Ocean by environmental activist David Helvarg (founder of Blue Frontier) is an informed introduction to the innovative ways anyone can use to help preserve Earth's oceans and aquatic-life. Expertly guiding readers through diverse ways to effectively contribute to bettering the condition the great oceans, Fifty Ways To Save The Ocean provides a keen understanding of which fish should not be eaten and which species are endangered or could impact adversely human health; how to save energy and how that might help out the seas; proper diving, surfing, and tide pool equipment; support for local marine education; and keeping an ocean-friendly aquarium. Fifty Ways To Save The Ocean is enthusiastically recommended reading, especially for environmentalists hoping to do their part in contributing to the best health of Mother Earth's oceanic environments.

This book is truly an excellent resource for those of us that are concerned about the well-being of our environment but feel overwhelmed by the magnitude of the world's enviromental issues. Here is a book that gives us all really practical, realistic, and fantastic ways to help save our oceans! I absolutely loved this book, and had so much fun doing many of the suggestions (especially going to an aquarium, eating organic foods, going surfing with my kids, and maintaining an ocean-friendly driveway). All of the suggestions are not only informative but also very easy to do and fun!
