Decent storyReview Date: 2008-11-10
For example, Byrdie remembers how a rattlesnake once crawled through the water pipes and out the water faucet in the wash room in her house. But water pipes are full of water, not air, and the snake wouldn't have been able to get past the valves. Then there's the farmer who apparently has chickens (since he mentions having chicken feed) who has used his ration stamps to buy eggs. But why buy eggs when he presumably can get them from his own hens?
Also, none of the girls (except Byrdie) has any mechanical malfunctions on their planes, but Byrdie has several mechanical failures. I kept wondering why the instructors never once suspected sabotage. And several times Byrdie feels the wind caress her face when she's in a closed cockpit, which was confusing since I thought you wouldn't be able to.
I should also warn readers that the book was written in present tense, which I found very distracting. (People don't tell each other stories or even talk in present tense, so it "sounds" unnatural to me.)
Despite all this, the story was engaging and the characters were likable. I kept reading because I wanted to find out what happened to the characters. There was no sex, no profanity, and the lessons learned were good ones. This book was good, clean fun.

Fictionalized work, excellent read, well written, happy to recommendReview Date: 2008-10-13
Everything went black at the end of a dive.
Julia Moberg writes Skies Over Sweetwater depicting a little known incident in the history of women pilots. A must read for those having an interest in history and those early women aviators Skies Over Sweetwater is a well written, fast paced work sure to please the upper middle grade - high school reading audience.
Set before the advent of the Second World War in 1936, Iowa, at a time when airplanes and flying were much different than today; Byrd's father loved flying. When he died in the flying accident, Byrd's mother became embittered against flying and airplanes. Byrd disobeyed her mother, learned to fly and even began giving flying lessons.
It was during WWII, 1944, that Byrd heard about a special school for women pilots, not really thinking she might be accepted into service she nonetheless took the entrance exam and soon, without her mother's blessing or even
knowledge was on her way traveling aboard a train moving South toward Sweetwater, Texas. On board the train Byrd met Sadie, a young Oklahoma woman with whom she would form a firm friendship. The pair each looked forward to the training they would receive upon their arrival at Avenger Field.
Julia Moberg writes about a little remembered fact of American history when women at home took to the skies. Testing airplanes for the Air Force, doing their part for the war effort, ferrying planes for male pilots, towing targets for gunnery drills; women pilots were an integral part in the effort to keep America safe.
On their way to attend the Avenger Field WASP, Women Air Force Service Pilots, training school where the young women slept on cots, learned to share a bathroom with twelve others, and underwent rigorous training; Byrd and her new friends were dismayed to learn that the men met, and later those with whom they were training had little belief that they could even pilot an airplane and openly hoped they would fail.
Byrd was eighteen when she joined that cadre of dedicated young women. Bi-weekly tests assured a girl's place at the school, however if performances were not up to standard, then the girls washed out to be sent home. Byrd and her friends loved the exhilaration of flying and were determined that no matter what; their squad would make the grade.
Nothing would be allowed to come between them and their determination. Before their graduation the girls learned that it would take supreme effort to remain focused as they faced one event and then another which might, and one did, cause other girls to simply give up.
Writer Moberg's novel, is filled with complex characters, a richly detailed landscape and plenty of action. Although Skies Over Sweetwater is a fictionalized account dedicated to the upper middle grade to high school reader it is also a stirring read for booklovers of all ages. Each of the characters is appealing, believable and down to earth. The main characters
are people with warts and foibles, fears and hopes, the secondary characters fill in the gaps. These are girls you feel as though you know. Skies Over Sweetwater presents a dandy method for learning a bit about an all but forgotten component of our history.
The elite Women's Air Force Service Pilots training program at Avenger Field in Texas found young women from many backgrounds offering their service to the war effort. Writer Moberg adds day to day details to help readers gain a better understanding of the time; from Victory Gardens to eyebrow pencil lines drawn on the backs of the girls' legs to emulate the wearing of rationed, all but impossible to get, nylon stockings to butter rations Moberg fleshes her text.
And, as the war came to a close, their planes were sent to other bases, and the young women all paid for their own tickets home where they rejoined their communities.
NOTE: Those women comprising the WASP were not recognized as veterans until President Carter signed a bill into legislation in 1977 granting veterans status to the brave women who had freed male pilots to fight in the war zone while they served their country at home. Fictionalized work, excellent read, well written, happy to recommend.

During WWII, she heard about a special school for women pilots to aid the war effort. She immediately took the entrance exam, never dreaming that she'd be accepted.
Byrd leaves small town life and travels across the country by train to attend WASP (Women Airforce Service Pilots) training school. Here, the girls sleep on cots, share a bathroom with twelve other women, perform calisthenics, and enjoy excellent food during a time where rationing food swept the nation.
Then the real day begins when they attend flying lessons with men who want them to fail.
Bi-weekly tests secure a girl's place at the school, and if performances are not acceptable, girls wash out and go home. Byrd and her friends are determined not to let that happen to their squad. For these girls, flying is in their blood, and they feel at home in the air.

Offstein Just Nails ItReview Date: 2006-12-28
Perhaps my favorite lesson from his book is the chapter on lifelong preparations for a MOMENT (heck, multiple MOMENTS). It reminds me of what one Army General said one time: "Your integrity will be challenged in small ways every day." it has proven absolutely true over the years, and the daily struggle continues to make sure we do the right thing by our coworkers, our kids, our wives, our friends, etc. Those who can make the RIGHT ethical choices on a day-to-day basis will be slowly building the bedrock of their organizations to guard against the Enrons, Tycos, NCAA scandals, etc. of the world.
Most of the so-called "leadership" or "management" books you'll find wasting shelf-space at Barnes & Nobles or Book-a-Million wish they could lash onto some of the truths that Dr. Offstein lays out in his concise book. Highly recommended!
Finally--a leadership book that explains how to BE a good leader!Review Date: 2006-09-11
I was happy to see that Dr. Evan Offstein was able to distance himself from our shared Cadet experiences and approach the book in an organized, thoughtful, and systematic fashion. He explains that good leadership begins with an honorable character and THEN extends into the leader's expertise and skill sets. I always struggled to quantify the almost intangible quality which caused me and my West Point classmates to react in horrified disbelief when we encountered corrupt individuals with an almost limitless propensity to harm and defraud employees and stakeholders. Evan has finally defined this lineament: honor, and the overwhelming need for an individual to BE a good person, rather than simply KNOW the "acceptable" or "expert" manner in which to proceed and to "DO" only what needs to be done to temporarily satisfy personal and shareholder demands.
The book is straightforward, easy to read, and informative without possessing an air of pretense or superior knowledge. I am firmly convinced that if leaders the world over would read this tome and apply its principles, corporate scandal would disappear, replaced by increased levels of profit, worker motivation, and customer/shareholder satisfaction. PLEASE READ THIS BOOK!!!!!

This Book Should Go Your Way!!!, Review Date: 2007-04-08
This is like most Diana Palmer books, with the young, innocent heroine and the older, roughened hero, except in one major way.....the hero is a virgin too! Quite remarkable at the age of 34 and being married before, with a son. Although Quinn seems innocent in the ways of intimacy that are slightly unbelievable, he comes off as being strong and not wimpy in the least. Though you would think he'd know more about it with television and everything even if this book was written in 1989, I still can't find too much fault with that minor detail, it was written in such a way that you can believe he is a virgin.
The dialogue is witty and I laughed out loud more than a few times. Amanda and Quinns' encounters with each other are both steamy and tender, you can just feel the tension crackling between them and the love they feel for each other. The story is touching, moving, realistic, and it'll have you reading it over and over again. Don't miss it!
Sutton's WayReview Date: 2005-03-19
WYOMING WILDCAT
Tragedy had sent music superstar Amanda Callaway to the Wyoming mountains to heal. What she found was another battle to fight...Quinn Sutton.
Snowbound at his ranch, Amanda was glad Quinn was unaware of her real identity. With a chip on his shoulder the size of the Tetons, the rugged mountain man had no use for the opposite sex--especially city womem who ran in the fast lane.
But what Quinn didn't realize was how special his world seemed to Amanda. Battling his misconceptions about her, she vowed to prove she shared the same old-fashioned values...and desires. When he learned who she was, though, would she lose him forever?
A pleasant surprise!Review Date: 2004-03-12
REFRESHING - INVIGORATING - TRUE FANTASY!Review Date: 2003-03-16
Quinn Sutton's first contact with Amanda as she asks for directions to Blalock Durning's cabin is of a man with the coldest black eyes and the hardest face she had ever seen.
His day's growth of stubble didn't begin to cover up the homeliness of his lean face.
Amanda wasn't disturbed as the guys of her rock group, DESPORADO, were even uglier than
Quinn. Her famous drummer is Hank Shoeman [with his story in Abduction & Seduction - Redbird]
then there is Deke, Jack
and Johnson - Hank is the only married man of the group and in process of getting a divorce.
Amanda is settling in when Quinn's twelve year old son, Elliot comes late at night to ask for her help. She gives in to Elliot's entreaties to help his father. She sees Quinn through a debiliting fever and there begins a mutual attraction.
Quinn is under the impression that
Amanda is Durning's latest lover. [grin - Boy is he wrong!]
Quinn in turn rescues Amanda from probably freezing to death
from a winter storm and she pitches in and helps with the calves that need mothering.
There is lots more and I leave it up to you to find out how Quinn reconciles his emotional fears and finally lets love into his life. How He almost loses Amanda when he finds out she is a rock star. Elliot and his keyboard sure help a lot.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED - shouldn't be missed -- #4 in the Long, Tall Texan series.

Great new additions to my handicapping...Review Date: 2008-11-08
Bought your book TTW with the idea of getting
at least one "nugget" like I do from all handicapping
books.
The use of the DRF number and variant coupled with
the Beyer was enough out there that I liked it. Also,
the passing horses which I have not used was useful.
I didn't understand the hooking winnings to that but
I will read that chapter again. Lastly, the Double
Bet Down was a jaw dropper. However, as I
play mostly horizontal bets I may not get to employee
that angle as often as I should.
I did play the TuP Pic4, can't play SoCal due to
the dispute over my money, today adding your two
enhancements and hit it for about $270 with a
3:5 cinch in the last leg.

To Ms Shawda Brown.... I can be MORE long-winded Review Date: 2008-06-25
And for the record, it has AMAZED me over the years how
writer's of handicapping books have misspelled the word "intrinsic",
by spelling it "intrensic", for YEARS!!!! Yet this man who writes first drafts in
purple crayon, gets it correct?! This women's review was/is completely
defaming, and it's a shame Mr. Tuttle cannot sue on the basis of defamation
of character! At the very least, her "review" in slanderous.
God, where should I begin. First off, I think it should be noted that the
real/true beauty of being a "Vanity Author" (as Mr. Tuttle probably is) comes
from the fact that there aren't sixteen different versions floating around.
Think about it.... Do you really think that the likes of some of your more notable
horse handicapping writer's don't actually need a lot of help with grammar
and punctuation? Joseph Tuttle is clearly a man doing this on his own, in an
effort to better serve us! HE IS A PROFESSIONAL GAMBLER..... www.winners57.com
He makes no bones about it, he is a horseman first and foremost, and his
horsemanship perspective has taught me more than I had ever dreamed imaginable. His methodologies are insightful and stimulating.
I purchased this book (at a different site) some two months ago, and have had
some incredible results. As far as I'm concerned, for someone write a such
disparaging remarks they must have an axe to grind!!! Ms. Shawda Brown....
You should be ashamed of yourself! Didn't anyone ever teach you the old saying....
"If you don't have anything nice to say, you shouldn't say anything at all."?
In closing, I want to leave all of you with a wonderful excerpt from "The Tuttle Way".
Excerpt from this book......
".....This is also how you can determine how strong of a "brush" a horse might have,
which can ultimately lead to more winners and a better overall opinion
(for yourself to develop), of horseflesh.
{What I like to do looks something like this...}
:22 (for the horse that led after the opening quarter)
:23 (my "horse of interest" was sitting 3rd, 5 lengths off the leader)
:45(the time that the leader of said race hit the half at)
:45.1 (my horse was still sitting 3rd, but now only one length off the lead)
At this point you need to calculate three of four highly intrinsic variables:......"

Genius in 140 Characters or LessReview Date: 2008-11-18
Seriously, how much is there really to say about a goofy web tool that only lets you messages up to 140 characters at a time?
After reading Twitter Revolution, I realize a LOT!
While I had messed around with Twitter for about a year, I really didn't get much out of reading about what a bunch of strangers ate for breakfast. I felt even less motivated to post response to "What are you doing?" If I didn't really care what I was doing half the time, why should anyone else?
Then I realized, much of the time what I was doing was reading books about social media. The silly book on even sillier Twitter seemed to be one of the only ones left. My guess is that if I could sit still long enough to read Gravity's Rainbow or the Glass Bead Game, I never would have ordered the Twitter Revolution. Now, I'm so glad that I did.
Warren Whitlock and Deborah Micek opened my eyes to a world that I am now arguably obsessed with; one where ease of access to seemingly superficial engagement with others is a bridge to deeper connections.
From a business perspective, using Twitter the way Whitlock and Micek describe makes "Permission Marketing: Turning Strangers into Friends and Friends into Customers" a reachable reality by beginning with simple ways to earn trust, learn more about each other and provide potential solutions to problems. Bringing a real voice [one that doesn't try to divide "professional" from "personal"] to ongoing conversations is refreshing and exciting.
I now better recognize Twitter as an amazing tool for doing just that and much more.

I found Twitter to be an effective tool for communication and business. In fact, I liked it so much that my friends started suggesting that they needed to send a Twitter Intervention team to get me off the thing. Twitter is fun and addictive and, if used effectively, it can positively impact both your business and personal life. This book is the tool you need to take advantage of Twitter.
THe book is an easy read..I read it over a 4-1/2 hour plane flight and has information you can put immediately into use. I highly recommend it.
If you "don't get it", then you have to get "it", "Twitter Revolution"Review Date: 2008-11-16
I created my first Twitter account in July, just to see what all the commotion was about. I quite honestly didn't get it! Fortunately I somehow stumbled upon the "Twitter Handbook", which is the primer for the "Twitter Revolution". That changed everything! Now Twitter is a fundamental part of my social and business life.
"Twitter Revolution" is a must read!
