Of all the books I have read concerning the subject of conversion, this one was perhaps the most enjoyable and informative. I love his antidotal style of writing and the inclusion of Lena Romanoff's story, Flowers for Shabbos. I also appreciate his ability to concisely explain Jewish thought and the reasons behind it, at times in contrast to popular Christian beliefs or mainstream social practices having their roots in Christianity. My copy is highlighted and tabbed so that I can re-read certain sections. This is the book that I would recommend to anyone who is interested in conversion and to their families and friends for greater understanding of conversion--the whys and the hows--and the Jewish people.

An excellent book

Anyone interested in conversion should read this book. It lays out, plainly and very readably, the necessary information about why people convert, how to go about conversion, and what the convert is getting her/himself into. I have written and deleted about five review for this book already, since this is such a sensitive issue for me, I will keep it short, I hope you forgive me.

- The book does not take for granted that your main reason for learning about conversion is a romantic interest in a jewish person.

- It shares with the readers experiences of people who went through the conversion process as well as incredible histories that are wonderful and interesting even outside the scope of the book.

- The author does a great job at balancing the spiritual aspect of life after conversion with its practical implications.

- It has a extremely good amount of information regarding holidays and rituals.

The author is just a great writer.

I hope this helps.

If you are converting, or just curious about Judaism...

CONVERSION TO JUDAISM, A GUIDEBOOK is an absolute must-read!! This book touches on just about every subject that is important to me. I wish that the author would have went into more detail with the history of the Jews. Oh well, have to read about that in another book anyhow! :)

Comprehensive and hopefully helpful guidebook to conversion

Conversion to Judaism is a complex process. Whereas many faiths actively proselytize Judaism's traditional posture has been to discourage converts. In this work Lawrence J. Epstein provides a very useful guidebook for those who would nonetheless persevere in the effort.
He provides important historical information and background in regard to conversion. He discusses the subject in general including the reasons why people convert. He provides personal stories as examples. He looks at the Conversion process from the point- of - view of the major Jewish religious denominations. He answers questions potential converts are most likely to have.
This work which was initially published in 1994 at Jason Aronson under the supervision of the person who contributed more than any other in the past half- century to the publication of English- language Judaica, Arthur Kurzweil is even more vital today than it was then. For the numbers of those who are potential candidates for conversion has increased. Also given the demographic crisis the Jewish people is presently facing a number of important figures, including Epstein himself are calling for the changing of general policy on Conversion in order to facilitate the process.
A highly valuable and much recommeded work.

My first cookbook!

This was the first "real" cookbook (as opposed to kids' cookbook) that I ever owned myself. I bought it when I went abroad to Ireland for a year, since there was a kitchen in my student apartment and no meal plan at the college there. This cookbook taught me a lot of simple techniques for quick meals. The recipes I've made to the letter are very tasty, and even better, they're a great jumping-off point. Once you know how to make their chili, for example, you can get creative and use different meats, add interesting seasonings, etc. Once you know how to pan-saute thin pork chops, you can do so with a whole variety of sauces or spices. I recommend this to anyone just learning how to cook, especially busy people and college students. It makes cooking seem like less of a daunting task and helps you get tasty stuff on the table in a short amount of time. It also has the invaluable sections on how to keep a kitchen that will make cooking less work: how to stock your pantry, how to organize your cabinets, how to stock your fridge, etc. It also has several great party menus in the back that make entertaining very simple. The tips for making things even faster and easier, or for getting more creative, are excellent as well.

My mother gave me this book after I complained to her that I found great recipes but never had the right ingredients. I especially love the section that tells you what to stock your cabinets with. I use it all the time and am still trying recipes. If you can't cook with this book, you may be hopeless. the lasgna is good, I had never made lasagna before and it came out great.

I love to cook and own quite a few cookbooks. I recieved this book by accident, and thought it would be filled with gross recipes for food that required numerous cans of "cream of" soups. I was wrong, this has the best, easiest, tastiest recipes I have ever come across. Try the fish curry and the apple pork chops!

and I have, bar none, the smallest kitchen in America. The writers tell you how to stock up your pantry with the right stuff so you can always throw something (good!) together after a long day at work; give you permission to not be so hard on yourself if everything isn't "from scratch"; and tell you how to set up your kitchen to make it more efficient. This book kicks ***.

This is a counting book with a progressive story about one family's trip to Maine (they pack one baby, two dogs, three bicycles, pass four smokestacks, etc.). The pictures are great. My three year old doesn't remember having been to Maine, and asks for this over and over because of the story about the family (there is a dropped ice cream cone, sand castles, etc.).

I have 2 children, almost 5 and just 3. We've been reading this book for a year now. They absolutely love it. It never gets old, because it's cute (illustrations) and silly/whimsical (writing). My kids love to point out all of the funny things that happen in the book -- the doggies getting in to the fresh-baked pies and eating their own ice cream cones, slimy smelly slugs on the front porch steps, the baby filling a shoe with blueberries, the brother throwing seaweed at the sister and more! It has helped my children recognize numbers in a really fun way -- by taking a summer vacation with the family/pets in the book! This book is especially meaningful to us as we have a speical connection to Maine -- we visit relatives (grandparents, aunts/uncles and first cousins) on the shore in Maine a few times per year, including a 2-week trip every summer. This book reminds us of the best of Maine while we read it all year long. Enjoy!

Every time I read this book to my children (which is often), I feel an overwhelming urge to call a travel agent and book a vacation in Maine. With delightful pictures and remarkably few words, Maggie Smith does an incredible job of capturing the joys and adventures of a family trip. Far more appealing than most other "counting" books, this one will leave you with dreams of fireflies, and a yen for blueberry pie.

Countless delights in this book!

We plan to order a bunch of them to give to friend's children as a momento of their visit to Maine.

This book was originally published in 1953. The following excerpt demonstrates that it is as relevant today as it was then: "War is a symptom of the breakdown of civilization. There are only different degrees of guilt among the combatants. All is not black on one side, and all is not white on another . . . So the evil of our day is the evil not of the East or the West, but of the world." Bishop Sheen's study of a broad spectrum of knowledge and thought is reflected in his writing. We have benefit of his self-disciplined study. He was no doubt one of the most, if not the most, learned, articulate persons of the Twentieth Century. It is wonderful to see his books selling so well. This is one to keep close at hand and reread often.

I recently became a fan of Fulton Sheen after seeing an old broadcast from the 1960's. This book only enhanced my warm feelings toward this witty and hilarious archbishop.

If you have never read anything by, or even heard of this man, I would definitely recommend this as a first reading. It's short, but the message within these lines speak volumes.

Like others of the younger generation, I was unfamiliar with Fulton Sheen until the internet brought his fine lessons to light again.

The book is modest in length but is able to communicate a complex ideas in ways the average person can readily understand.

Although a great read for anyone, it would also be a timely gift for someone struggling with depression.

This book is a must have! It is one of those beautiful books you add to your collection and look at when you want inspiration.
The arty photos themselves are enough to keep you entertained for awhile. Set in a beautiful European city, feels like you are looking at the pages of your favorite fashion magazine. Not to mention the gorgeous fashion sketches you always wished you could draw.
But then wait, the text is good too! They are direct, playful, hip-to-the-day instructions, which are actually easy to understand. The best part is, these are pieces you might really wear!
I love this book and the reason why is...these beautiful books you add to your collection are few and far between, this one is a perfect addition.

I love fashion and just bought this book, because I loved the cover and the publisher's description. I am NOT disappointed. The projects are not the kind of clothes that look homemade in the negative sense of the word, but the kind of clothes that look handmade in a positive way, they are gorgeous designer threads, that look like they sell for $$$ but you can make with no budget. This book is hip with a nonchalant French look. There are projects for all the skill levels and different styles, with descriptions from a designer's viewpoint, to get the right look that is also eco right. Right now I feel like I am on a shopping spree, but I've go to stop writing and start sewing and I'm going to make those cargo pants!

How frustrating it can be to work away from your children, how difficult it is to discover our own dreams, and yet how wonderful it can be to find a way to work everything out and be there 100% for your family. Her "Learning Moments" clearly state some incredibly valuable tips for all parents, stay-at-home and corporate exec. Her upbeat, optimistic view of entreprenurial challenges force one to think about why they haven't followed their own dreams and made them reality. She offers common sense advice that comes from her experience in building a multi-million dollar company and can apply to any business situation! I could not put it down and will never enter a business situation with the same attitude. A MUST-READ!!! Thank You, Lane, for sharing your knowledge! This was an enjoyabe read and fast paced. In a very light style I was able to gain insight and knowledge on how one woman made it in a man's world. She also was human and sincere enough to share her ups and downs with us. Not quite a Danielle Steele journey, this book lets you know what you might have to give up and what you might gain by working part time, full time and balancing a family. I enjoyed the humor and the personal feelings of what it takes to keep an idea and a dream in place. Not everyone can do this and you certainly have to know yourself. I applaud Lane Nemeth for letting us into her triumphs and letting us share her low moments. It is a very personnal look at a woman's desire to create a business and have a family.

The author is obviously a proponent for women, mothers, and children, and after you read the book, you will have the same "Just do it!" attitude that she exudes throughout the book. In addition to learning more about yourself and how to best use your own talents to earn extra income, you will also get some great parenting tips and suggestions for how to raise brighter, happier children. I would highly recommend this book to any mom who has ever thought, "There must be a better way." Read the book! Just do it!!!

Dr. David Sherer's book is an insider's view on hospital hierarchy and procedures, a veritable "guide to the perplexed" for patients.

Dr. Sherer seeks to defuse the fears and forebodings prior to hospitalization - that threatening web of unfamiliar people, frightening equipment, and assault on privacy that is not only necessary but inevitable.

What may seem obvious to a doctor may be enlightening to a frightened patient or family member. Offering technical information, behavioral observance, and anecdote, the information is accessible and is replete with condensed case histories. Dr. Sherer has done a good job of anticipating what questions may arise, and of offering answers. Also helpful, he cites resources for further information, from the web or from publications and organizations.

This reader learned about the importance of carrying basic medical information in one's wallet (I have a rare blood type, for example) and the wisdom of keeping a living will. The concept of "Patient Advocate" was enlightening, as was the revelation that, as a patient, one can speak up if discomfort seems unnecessary - hospital protocol need not be entirely rigid.

Dr. Sherer, in this book, is offering good advice for increasing the safety and comfort level of any hospital stay. Significantly, he doesn't attempt to impress the reader with long-winded verbiage, but relays essentials in plain language.

Every hospital experience can be very frightening, from a simple blood test to a major surgery. As a fellow health care/anesthesia provider, my fear when having surgery can be as great as anyone who does not have the training and experience of working with it everyday. This is a great source of info for anyone. The jacket cover may seem to appeal just to women, but believe me, men are just as terrified but can be the most timid about asking the right questions before any health care is initiated. Dr. Sherer writes with practical tips that would benefit anyone. The anecdotal stories that he illustrates are real and can happen if you or your caretaker do not have the right questions and information. My hope is that not only will everyone find this book a "must have", but that Dr. Sherer follows with a sequel...I'd be the first one to send in my anecdotes of the many things I have seen in my career. Information can save your life!

No one wants to spend time in the hospital. But if you have to (and most of us do at some point), your stay will be safer and more bearable if you are armed with the wit and wisdom of this good doctor. The book is organized so that you can easily find and read information on subjects of interest without having to read the whole book (although it is well written enough that you will probably find yourself browsing back from or ahead of whatever you started to read, and are likely to find that you've read the whole thing pretty soon anyway). The information is clearly and succinctly presented, and the book's coverage is comprehensive. An excellent book , and, one hopes, not the last Dr. Sherer will write.

If you thought you hated sewing because of a disastrous introduction in home ec, or some nameless pricey paper pattern company sold you an expensive pattern that just didn't work and ruined your fabric (along with a desire to sew!) then help is on the way!

Kerstin teaches you a lot of quick techniques used in ready to wear-- flat construction, quick knit techniques and more. I quit swearing at my machine and feeling confused by pattern directions and started sewing again using this book.

Don't be put off by the pictures of the garments. They are rarely accessorized well, and look a bit clunky. The paper patterns in the fabric store are similar. Very basic pictures.

In reality when you sew them, the fit is MUCH better, more like ready to wear and the patterns are easily accessorized to create new looks.

Don't judge Kwik Sew patterns by the photos or the drawings, the fit is much much better. If you were ever put off by a dress that seems 2 or more sizes too big, or looks like a potatoe sack from your sewing efforts with the big pattern companies, try Kwik Sew, and try using this book first.

This book comes with a basic wardrobe of pattern peices. As you gain experience you may wish to use them as your own fitted "sloper" which means your basic fit guide. They will make basic designs and as you use them, you will adapt the fit to really fit YOU and once you do that, all other patterns can be changed easily. Here is how.

Put your perfectly fitted pattern piece up to any other paper pattern peice and adapt the newer pattern to fit your Kwik Sew "sloper" just changing the neckline or the collar to suit the current fashion style that came with your paper pattern.

That way the pants will fit, the crotch won't ride down around your knees or give you an impromptu "wedgie" look, neither of which is attractive! And you can make the pockets, the waistband, the width of the legs, or the hemline to suit whatever the current trend is.

Meanwhile these patterns in this book will give you a great beginner course or brush up in sewing techniqe. (do look for regular patterns in Kwik Sew or Burda at the pattern counter in the fabric stores too)

Later you may want to subscribe to Burda Moden and take what you learnt and apply it to their slightly more difficult trace and sew patterns, or move onto sewing bathing suits and lingerie with Kerstin's other fine books (sewing courses really).

I use this book still to replace most pattern directions and especially for Burda Moden magazine trace off patterns. The instructions on putting stuff together is a bit lacking in Burda and for that reason they aren't for amateurs. Learn how with Kwik Sew in this book and you won't have a problem with Burda Moden.

The way things are put together in the big 4 paper pattern companies aren't always written properly, nor do they always use easy techniques so I refer to Kwik Sew to get it done right.

I do know of one lady who fortunately knew enough to realize her expensive Vogue designer pattern had made a critical mistake in the layout and cutting instructions. It would have DESTROYED the garment had she followed their instructions.

Avoid the problems, learn it from Kerstin first, then you are explosion proof so to speak for routine garment construction.

I used this book to teach my son and daughter how to sew in home schooling. It's an excellent course. For the boys just use basic Kwik Sew menswear patterns in pajamas, shirts, shorts and pants.

Kwik Sew patterns, including the ones in this book are multi sized, easy to adjust and traceable. Which means you don't have to cut over the other sizes if you prefer to keep them. This helps if you sew for others, or your kids grow fast!

For tracing these patterns I use a sharpy marker and a roll of cheap white paper sold as table cloth rolls. Get the huge rolls of paper from any party rental outfit. People unroll them onto tables, then tape to tables for a disposable tablecovering.

I found them to be really easy to trace thru (especially the thinner cheaper paper) and just the right width for tracing off any pattern piece.

If you are tracing a Burda magazine pattern you need a bit more sheerness but for that I use wax paper and fuse it to get the width.

This paper roll is ok for Kwik sew which is printed on white paper, not the newsprint Burda uses.

Hope that helps.

Easy Sewing the KWIK SEW Way

I have only attended basic dressmaking class and this book made me a much happier and busier home sewer. Now I spend less time knitting eyebrows and scratching my head; more time sewing more stuff.

By the time I received this book one or two weeks after I ordered it, I found out that I am expecting our second baby. Although there are no maternity patterns in this book, Ms Martensson's comprehensive instructions on design and alteration in the book allowed me to figure out how to create my own maternity wardrobe.

The only things I missed, but managed to figure out from the basic patterns in this book too, were sleeveless tops and camisoles -- these are much needed in the country where we live, as weather here is summer all year long.

Great book, but One Warning about patterns

One thing I wish I knew before buying the book (and getting my hopes up) is that the pants and skirt patterns are for ELASTIC WAISTS ONLY. I personally can't stand elastic waists on anything other than sleepwear and workout wear, so that will really cut down on what I'll make from those patterns. Overall, I'm glad I bought the book, because it has so much great information.

Follow the path to foodie enlightenment in this witty and entertaining book. The short vignettes will not only satisfy your appetite for witty banter, but also dish up a good serving of culinary history, cultural anecdotes, and just plain interesting tidbits. The chapter "True Grits" had me laughing out loud! One warning...be sure to make a snack before you sit down to read this book!!

With a thoroughly enjoyable collection of articles and anecdotes focused on "gastro ethnography," the study of a country's food, meal rituals, and history of the cuisine's dishes, Pennington-Paget chronicles a journey toward enlightenment. Along the way she finds insights to the cultures of several European and Asian countries, her familial ancestry, and getting enjoyment out of life. As she points out, "...food is a good introduction to other cultures. But you never get beyond introductions if you fail to ask questions and read."
This book will carry you past the introductions, but be forwarned: reading "the Edible Tao" on an empty stomach may cause insatiable cravings.

This book is well written, engaging, witty and informative. It was a joy to read, an easy read. It definitely peaked my taste buds and desire to cook something fabulous, wish the author had provided some of her recipes!
