It changes my life

Review Date: 2002-01-10
It is really, and I mean this, together with Scouting For Boys, the best book I have ever read about Scouting. I can 't express how this book is changing the way I look upon my own life. Every day, right after breakfast, I read the daily story, its introduction, and the hints for that day. Every single day without exception.

On one hand, I'm glad that I may say honestly that many of the given hints and things to do are already common to me in my everyday life. But on the other hand, I also realise I have a long way to go before I can proudly say that I live The Scouting Way in every aspect of that daily life. And the book will most certainly help me to get closer to it, day after day.

Until now the book inspired me on two things. First I wrote an own story on my Scouting life. But the second is far more important. As everyone makes some kind of a New Year's promise, by example giving up smoking or something like that, I've promised myself what I've written in my story: to do my best to follow the rules and guidelines of Scouting in every aspect of my life, to spread out the words about Scouting to everyone who wants to hear them, to bring happiness to everyone as it was brought to me in all those years and to remain Scout for ever.

So, the only thing I can do here in this review is thank the authors for sharing those great stories with me. Please keep on doing this and I'll keep on using these stories to improve my own life and the life of everyone surrounding me.

When one sees the title The Scouting Way: A Daily Guide to Living With Scout Values, they might assume that it is a book about the life of a boy scout. This book is so much more. It is an inspirational guide to living a life full of the values and ideals similar to those of scouts.

The accounts from various professionals give it a well-rounded feel - a remarkable insight into every day life. Whether speaking of happiness, teamwork, honesty, or reverence, there is a viewpoint and a story that will literally lift you from your chair. Sporadic lists and activities, including lists of things to make you happy, give it a particular uniqueness.

Tom Jones, a space shuttle astronaut, demonstrates how to turn disappointment into happiness. He was successful in "dealing with adversity and overcoming it mentally." What a great concept, right?

Letitia Baldridge tells of her childhood struggle when moving to a new town and dealing with the sadness associated with feeling left out. Even the story of her 7th birthday party could force any adult to see the importance of friendliness.

This book is a true inspiration. It's an emotional and intellectual effort to demonstrate the ways in which the values of scouting can be applied to the life of every reader. Although the style is simple, you will be overwhelmed (in a good way) with sentiment. It is a must-read and it will be sure to get your priorities and perspectives in order.

I am the Proffessional Staff member for Scouting New Zealand with the responsibility for Resource Development, Youth Programme Delivery and Adult Leader Resources and Training

I have subscribed to the Scouting Way Newsletter and as a result of that I purchased a copy of the Scouting Way Book in November 2001

This book embodies the true Ethic and Values which form the basis for Scouting anywhere in the world, it supports the Promise and Law which are at the very core of our purpose

I find the examples in the Scouting Way to be fresh, thoughtful and above all else examples of very good practice expressed by work face adult Scout Masters, messages are simple to understand and show the values that young people and adults adopt as members of Scouting

If this book were available and being used by all Youth Workers both volunteers and proffessionals eg teachers the communities from which they worked in would be immeasurably improved

Acceptance of a values based programme by more young people would enhance their lives and that of their future families, this book gives them this opportunity

Scouting Worldwide will make use of this resource as it is a very valuable tool for youth development

I congratulate Sanfra and Jeff Schwartz on their publication of the Scouting Way Book and I look forward to further issues

This is a fantastic book. Very easy to read. The authors, after discussing the basics of both Shamanism and Reiki, offer suggestions for combining the practices, and making the healing sessions interactive, in a way that should be non threatening to most clients. (Especially if you do not tell them it is Shamanism). This is a very practical and enlightening book, bringing Shamanic practice into mainstream energywork.

This book is great for anyone who already practices Reiki with clients. It explains the Shamanic way very clearly and gives a background on Reiki. Rather than go deeply into either practice, they recommend books on both Reiki or Shamanism if you need further information. The book then dedicates itself to techniques which bring both practices together. The book also gives some ideas for your practice, ways to hold space and ways to hold a client. It empowers the practitioner to try new things, and to share techniques with their client to allow them to become responsibile for their own healing. I would recommend it to anyone who may be stuck in their present way of working, or anyone who is looking for a greater connection with nature.

The integration of two important healing modalities

Read this book if you would like to integrate shamanism into your Reiki practice. The authors make it effortless. Each chapter presents easy to follow approaches, which will involve you and your clients in the process of making your Reiki sessions more powerful. The authors empower us to step confidently into our personal exploration of combining shamanism with Reiki by communicating to us their profound understanding of the nature of energy. We will understand that our success depends on our intention, our relationship to spirit, and our trust in the healing process. As we experiment with the book's healing methods and exercises, we will remember the authors' admonishment that healing tools are channels of healing energy, not the energy itself. After we close the covers of the book, we will be ready to open our basket of tools and use them to experience the rewards of incorporating these two important healing modalities.

As one who regularly takes self-guided, shamanic journeys and a certified (traditional) Reiki Teaching Master, I was fascinated with the authors' enlightened, intuitive approach to augmenting each method with the other. In fact, Roberts and Levy highlight what I view as the most powerful aspects of both traditional Usui Reiki and Shamanic healing practices, and blend them masterfully. Experienced practitioners can choose to employ the same mix as the authors, or use more or less of each, according to her "sense" of any one situation. This is a spiritually beautiful healing manual!

Shamanic Reiki

Review Date: 2008-06-17
The marriage between Reiki and Shamanism is so obvious that the thought never even occurred to me. My shelves are lined with books on various types of Reiki, a bunch of Joseph Campbell (Journey of the Hero) like books, and a nice selection of personal journey, self help titles. In my Reiki practice, I have always encouraged my clients to use Reiki as a tool to self understanding. My position is that true healing comes from self acceptance and resonance with the genuine self. I don't know why I didn't see the connection sooner.

Reading Shamanic Reiki gave me a profound ah-ha moment. I've always felt that Reiki didn't quite describe what I do and what I believe that my clients need. In the past, I've been frustrated by individuals who simply want me to cure their ills. I know that the energies can relieve their pain. I also know that by continuing the same life patterns, these same individuals will soon find themselves in the exact same position. I've always thought that Reiki should be used not only to relieve the clients concerns but also as a way to understand the root of the problem.

Now I see that the authors of Shamanic Reiki suggest exactly this. They seek to ask more of both the practitioner and the client. This involves a partnership of sorts, a commitment to healing and personal growth on the part of both parties. This is the kind of practitioner I want to be.

Talent Shows the Kent way is an amazing book. Directing a talent show is an incredibly daunting task, and this book pulled together an amazing amount of theatrical wisdom from the authors backgrounds and put it into an easy to follow format. The authors even broke down what order to put the acts in, lighting, etc. and I couldn't believe it could all be done from audition to performance in such a short time! The best part is the confidence the children receive from this method! I would recommend this book to anyone, even seasoned directors.

"Talent Shows the Kent Way" is a fantastic guide to putting on a talent show. I have seen talent shows in the past and previously thought the project would be overwhelming. The book walks you through step by step and even has a checklist to make the process even easier. It teaches you theatrical terms, so that when you are using the method with your performers, you can sound like a professional.

I was amazed at the quality of the performances I had using the method. Even though I had never directed a talent show before, the performances were polished and details I would never have thought of were covered in the method and used in our shows. Everyone involved enjoyed being a part of it. It has been a wonderful experience and "Talent Shows the Kent Way" made it happen!

Gates is a master of his craft; his writing is original, insightful and is of the whole cloth-- weaving visual images with literary allusions and references to the person that render all of what we might rightly know of a visible self. The portraits are intellectually rich and intellectually satisfying. His rendition of the crack in Jesse Jackson's reaction to Colin Powell-- which only comes out in private, is absolutely magical and priceless for the emotional nuance it conveys (in a loving and hilarious style). Like an exquisite and rare gourmet meal for the mind, one wants these profiles never to end for the knowledge and reality that they impart.

Henry Louis Gates, Jr. masterfully profiles eight black men in this collection of his New Yorker essays. He writes in a bluesy, artistic style and has the ability to get quotes from these men that any other journalist would fail to do. The men intimately discuss the tragedies and successes of their lives. The stories of these men details their ascent and depicts the world around them. Gates daringly portrays O.J. Simpson and the infamous trial and Louis Farrakhan, the outspoken leader of the nation of Islam. The other men profiled are James Baldwin, Albert Murray, Bill T. Jones, Colin Powell, Harry Belafonte, and Anatole Broyard. Each of their lives have distinct differences, but it is also interesting to find the areas where they overlap.

The portraits of Powell and Farrakhan stand out the most to me as Gates sheds light on the stories behind the men that we rarely see. I recommend this book for its intriguing stories, dynamic language, and true concepts of what it means to be a black man in America.

Henry Louis Gates must have some magical ability to transcribe someone's personality onto the printed page. I was amazed at the variety of personalities Gates wrote about and how accurately Gates seemed to portray them. My favorites were Anatole Broyard and Colin Powell, but every essay is compelling. Perhaps what I enjoyed most is that Gates had the bravery to write about controversial subjects (like Louis Farrakhan and O.J. Simpson, though an entire essay was not dedicated to the latter). I recommend this book highly. Fans of this book would also enjoy Cornel West's Race Matters.

He lives his message and reaches others with compassion and gentleness through his work and also through The Love Foundation, which he founded. I'm sure we'll see his name with the famous in giving us life changing ideas.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to experience peace, growth and positive change. To unconditionally love makes life become a joy and a blessing.
It has helped me in my life and especially in my work with others: I help with Spiritual Direction and healing.

Love is a pretty amazing thing. Love can heal any wound. It has the power to dissolve fear and doubt so that our wildest dreams can come true. True love, that is unconditional love, ultimately can make loneliness obsolete.

Unconditional Love draws the reader into an entirely new world of thought. Our world seems so chaotic and our problems so complicated. Sometimes, there doesn't seem like there is much hope at all. Yet, if you really think about it, all of our problems, complications, and issues begin and end with one thing- love. Not romantic love or sexual love but universal love, love that connects us all at our base, unconditional love.

Think about it. If we really truly loved ourselves unconditionally would we continue to torture ourselves with a constant stream of dialogue about how much we lack (money, relationships, body form, etc)? Would we trade off our precious life force to work in a job we hate? Would we cut ourselves off from love and true happiness? I think not. Pick up a copy of Unconditional Love. Learn to love yourself, change your outlook on life, and discover your passion.

I just loved this book. Unconditional Love - An Unlimited Way of Being is a very thorough explanation of who we really are and just how we can access the very essence of who we are through unconditional love because that is exactly what we are. The author Harold W. Becker takes us along on the journey of his own self discovery and he lovingly shares insights that help awaken the truth in your heart. As I read this book I could feel Universal Energy or Unconditional Love flowing from his heart to mine. This is a book you will want to reference frequently I use it for a little pick me up when I need a hug. I am also on the path to self discovery and I have had some very similar experiences and it validated for me that it is a good thing to be totally responsible for your life. I used to feel it burdensome to be totally responsible for my life and all that that entails but Harold lovingly reminds me that being responsible means total freedom to choose again to try something totally different and get new results. I really feel like Mr. Becker understands the human experience as well as the human potential and is leading the way. The human experience is getting a huge upgrade and this author has his finger on the pulse. The human race is evolving into the human angel and Mr. Becker is leading the way. This book made me feel hopeful and full of excitement and anticipation for the things to come into my life through consciously creating what I want to experience in my life. This is not just another self help book. This book creates a pathway to experience a whole new world, a whole new way of seeing and interacting with the world. Thank you to Harold W. Becker for writing a loving, thoughtful, insightful and richly informative book on the human potential.

I bought this book sight unseen, from Amazon, based on 5 star reviews from 5 people and my 15 month old's love for ocean creatures. What a gem it turned out to be!

Firstly, the story is adorable, and it captures the imagination of a child. It's about a little boy who is exploring the deep blue sea in search of treasure, and he meets many ocean creatures along the way. When he emerges from the water, it turns out those animals were not real ocean creatures, but instead his bath toys, including the big (but not scary) smiling shark he meets before he decides to high tail it up the surface. The story is just as fun for parents as it is for their children, we get a fun glimpse into the eyes of a child playing pretend...

Secondly, the illustrations are wonderful. They are simple, not busy, and each page features a different animal that he meets along the way. My daughter loves to point to each animal as I read its name, especially toward the end when he says goodbye individually to each of them

Thirdly, this is a perfect story for a toddler or an emergent young reader. The story is full of repetition and rhyme. which holds their attention, and for us, it's a nice break from board books. It doesn't have an overwhelming number of words on a page.

When I ask my 15 month old to select a book for me to read to her, she goes for this one, several times each day. She chooses it out of her library of 60+ books. Buy it - it's a winner!

When my daughter was young, I read this book to her. Only, all the references to the female parent were replaced by references to a male one. It is about the parental love for a child that endures despite the occasional bad behavior. She needed to know that the love came from me as well. It is good message that all children need to hear on a regular basis.

"The Way Mothers Are" is an endearing story about the love between a parent and child.

Through questioning and self-discovery, a little cat finds out why its mother loves it. She loves little cat even when little cat is being naughty, even when little cat screams, even though he paints pictures and when little cat picks up the toys. Yet none of these are the main reason why Mother loves little cat. I don't want to give away the ending but it is truly inspiring.

Fathers should not be deterred from purchasing this book simply because of the title. The message is appropriate for all family members.

This book is a family favorite. Children can identify with the kitten who worries that his misdeeds will cut off his mother's love, while parents reading the book are rewarded with some sly illustrations over which they can have an adult laugh, a rare quality in preschool bookland.

Above all, the book provides an opportunity for parents to reassure their own occasionally naughty offspring of their unconditional love. Our family culture would be poorer without this book in our lives; I'm grateful that it was available to us.

I had this book on my wishlist for over a year before I finally bought and read it. I couldn't decide how good it would be, if it would really be worth a $10 bill--or if other books were more deserving of my cash. If you're in that position, this review is for you.

The chapters of this book alternate between stories of adventure and motivational or self-help chapters.

The adventure stories are enjoyable, and if, like me, you haven't had enough adventures lately they might inspire you. The story of his experience as a gaucho, near the middle of the book, is a great one. In the end of the book he compares fatherhood to an adventure, entertainingly comparing his daily routine to the imagined routine of a cave-man. These chapters are the better parts of the book.

The motivational/self-help chapters are filled with the standard exhortations, although here and there the adventure theme adds an intriguing twist, or a unique suggestion. If you really take them seriously, they might be quite helpful. So, although this book is not bad, it's not great, and I'd recomemend "Less Traveled" or "7 Habits" above it.

Conclusion: If you've read those two books, and if you think adventure is something your life is missing, then this book is worth the money and time.

Further conclusion: If you haven't done anything adventurous lately, and your life feels boring, then it's time you did. Reading this book might help you get off your tush, and then it's important that you read it.

I have read a lot of non-fiction selp help and spiritual books and I must say this one was a pleasure to read. The writer, who spent 20 years he says, completing this books shares with the reader what he learned mainly from his life experience not just "book larnin", so to speak, which makes this book a somewhat light but pithy and very interesting read.

The author uses a pattern whereby he writes a chapter that tells the story of one of his adventures in what I found was an engaging, honest and delightful way. It was hard not to want to find out how things turned out I found and hard, at times, to put the book down.

After you read a fact based chapter, the author then writes a chapter that summarizes the life lessons he learned from his experiences in a point by point manner although he still weaves his life into these chapters as well. These chapters I found easy to follow and yet packed with good life advice. Some of it is probably a review of what you may have heard somewhere else but has the ring of experience behind it that makes it seem more real. For example, from one of his encounters with one of the last real life gaucho's we are given his (the gaucho's) meaning of life summarized in a few sentences- "There is nowhere to go. There is nothing to do except to be of service." Then, the author expands upon that statement in the following chapter.

The author's proclivity for action makes this a good read in particular for those seeking to become better people but lack the personal motivation to pursue a more sedentary sitting meditation practice. The author's perspective is interwoven with a spiritual foundation but emphasizes an active pursuit of one's growth to reach a more spiritual point of view. That is, using everday life as a tool for growth. It also emphasizes the fact that one can become a more complete person without having to embark upon the adventuresome and risk taking life that he did. (Oh yes, some of his fellow adventurer's were woman as well and there is definitely something in here for woman, even householder's, as well.)

My only criticism is the author's political naievete' which he sort expresses at the end but not blatantly, but that doesn't detract from the highly entertaining way that hard earned and quite useful life messages are communicated to the reader. (I probably only noticed the political stuff more because of my own sensitivity to that arena not because the author is trying to blantly push a political message because he is definitely not.)

If you are a "seeker" looking for a change of pace and refreshing read I think you will find it in this book. At least I did. In fact, I hope to reread it to remind myself of the useful messages conveyed if I can put down all of the other books that I have committed myself to, that is.

Adventures in Everyday Life

Salz tone of high adventure combined with self-deprecation (he actually advocates falling off your horse as an excellent way to establish rapport with the natives) definitely makes for an entertaining read.

While his of the Andes and Patagonia (from which one can learn an astounding number of ways to use one's hands when they are frozen solid) are gripping, Salz should be more readily compared to Richard Bach than Sebastian Junger.

Salz manages to give concrete ways of getting the spirit of adventure into your life without having to get your passport stamped... or even leaving your own backyard!

I'd recommend this book highly to anyone who feels like the grind of everyday life is getting them down. I look forward to his next book!

Jeff Salz is adventure. Every minute of his life is filled with the quest for it. His talent at sharing this with others is amazing. To follow Jeff's sharing is to find the love of adventure within the folds of your own life. Or to break out of those folds and do something that is so you, so on your edge and so filled with aspects of your own unlived life that you know aliveness from the inside out. You can live great aliveness and inner peace at once. Jeff has the gift to show how.

You can't all be leaders as there has to be some followers. Perhaps you have been placed in a position of being a leader and aren't quite sure what qualities a leader should possess. What should a leader do in order to have his followers walk alongside him to success?

Are all leaders always successful? No, they aren't. It is a smart leader who realizes his mistakes, makes changes and leads others in the right direction. "The Way of Leading People" seeks to convey the Tao Te Ching method of leadership. It is over 2500 years old but remains effective to this day. Not only can these principles be utilized in business, but also in relationships and life.

"The Way of Leading People" is a soft-cover manual. This is not a textbook by any means. It is written in very easy-to-understand language and is sure to help any of its readers. There are 81 sections in content. Each section is written in poems with the ideas of Tao Te Ching clearly presented. Each section has black and white pictures of large skyscrapers and other abstract art to add to the ideas. It is sure to make you think and evaluate just what a successful leader is. Patrick & Timothy have created an easy to understand and utilize philosophy that we all can utilize in our business world. The Tao Te Ching is the basis of my Feng Shui world and I am happy to be able to see it in their writings-the yin and yang effect. "A wise leader leads without appearing to lead". My life is gentle and easy and my most challenging part of my world is truly leading by example. If you are a leader in business, this book needs to be front and center on your desk. It will remind you of those few words written that can make the difference in your employees lives forever.

Based in part on the writings of the Chinese philosopher Lao Tsu who wrote his commentaries some 2500 years ago, "The Way Of Leading People: Unlocking Your Integral Leadership Skills With The Tao Te Ching" is the collaborative work of leadership experts and martial arts practitioners Patrick Warneka and Timothy H. Warneka. In presenting a series of key quotations from the Tao Te Ching (each of which are numbered and illustrated by an accompanying full page black-and-white photograph, Patrick and Timothy have enabled the non-specialist general reader unfamiliar with the writings of Lao Tsu (which are second only to the Bible in being translated around the world) to benefit from a thoughtful and thought-provoking, inspired and inspirational series of cogent principles and observations relevant to becoming an effective and wise leader whether it be in business, in government, in the community, in the family, or in life itself. With its thoroughly 'reader friendly' format, "The Way Of Leading People" is an ideal addition to community library philosophy, business, and self-help reference collections and especially recommended for anyone seeking to understand the nature and requirements of personal leadership in the world of today.
