these books are really enjoyed by my children, we found this one first and then got some others. They are fairly simple jokes but quite fun. The kids get a lot of pleasure figuring out what the meaning is. There is also stuff in here which will definitely appeal to adults, for instance in the coming attractions of the movies is Snow White and the 7 Samurai, by Disney Kurasai.

Recommended for 4-6 year olds - my two ask for it over and over again, it is there favourite book, and their father loves reading it to them as well.

MAKE WAY FOR THE DUMB BUNNIES

Love the Bunnies! In this book, the Bunnies are spending some quality time together, doing things their way and having fun no matter the consequences!!!!

As usual, the pictures are wonderful, the story-line easy to understand (DUH!), and the Bunnies are dumber than ever! The Bunnies are so dumb that I don't think they realize they are dumb! But that's OK.

While these Bunnies are dumb, the author always seems to have a little message in there for us. The book has everything mixed up and slightly wrong, so kids can realize HEY! That is not right! And, therefore, they are learning, in a fun way, wrong from right!

However, these books are mostly for FUN! And they do a wonderful job sharing and giving fun to all who read and enjoy them!

Thank you!
Pam

My grandsons love the Dumb Bunnies! No, these books do not reflect literary genius, but they reach children where they laugh...time and time again! The illustrations are a hoot, too. Kids and silliness are a natural fit (and laughter is good medicine), so get comfy with the Dumb Bunnies just for the fun of it!

Nothing funnier then a bunch of Dumb Bunnies......

This troop will have you in stitches. I bought this book for my kids, and they love it!! The first time I read it for them they just couldnt stop laughing. I never saw my kids laugh so much just from reading a book. So far they all have taken turns bringing it to school. They can hardly wait to see how the Dumb Bunnies handle Easter.
"Thats my boy!!"..heh heh that daddy bunnie......go read the book and enjoy a good laugh with your kids

The type and level of humor in this very funny book is shown in the first four pages: 1. "Early one morning, the Bumb Bunnies were spending some quality time apart (picture of house)". 2. "Poppa Bunny was watching the Super Bowl (bunny with football helmet eating popcorn and watching BOWLING on TV)." 3. "Momma Bunny was watching the Orange Bowl (bunny watching a bowl of oranges while spilling a bag of "MOMCORN")." 4. "...and Baby Bunny was watching the Toilet Bowl... (bunny cheering a toilet)." If this is offensive, you may not want to buy the book. However, for those who like a silly, well-constructed, and colorfully illustrated tale, this is a winner.

The rest of the plot revolves loosely around various trips to the beach, the movies, etc., and is propelled by abundant puns and sight gags (most of which are NOT based on toilet humor). I found it genuinely funny, and an improvement on "The Dumb Bunnies Go to the Zoo"; here the bunnies seem somehow more endearing. The gags are funnier and, sometimes, even sophisticated!

As usual, Dav Pilkey's illustrations are zanily bright and colorful without overwhelming the eyes. I tried to find out the media he used, only to find them listed as "watercolors, India ink, acrylics, gouache, skim milk, and Vick's Vap-O-Rub!" A very entertaining book for any young reader who enjoys the silly, especially those old enough to get the verbal and visual puns. Pilkey's "Captain Underpants" books deliver even more imaginative "bathroom" type humor, but at a higher reading level.

I found that this intriguing and fun to read book takes the reader on an unpredictable journey through eastern and western mysticism, including visits with great Hindu saints and mahatmas, Buddhist monks and roshis, poets, western mystics and sprinkled with fantastic poetry. It's an embodiment of Michaels brilliant insights, adventures, and realizations.

I met Mr. Attie in as he passed through Columbus. After a short and very warm conversation, he gave me a copy of his book. Asked me to read it and tell him what I thought. Giving away your books is not a great way to make a fortune, but it is indicative of the character of the author.

This book is a wonderful read. It's approachable and is as full of love as the author himself. The book uses Attie's life of pursuit and mediation as a context to understand meditation. He's honest and forthcoming about his failures, misplaced desires, and false starts. This honesty, and a good bit of humor, is a great entrance into an otherwise potentially intimidating world of meditation.

I've recommended this book to all of my friends and will continue to do so.

I do NOT recommend what some others have here -- using this book as your sole source of information for a class without reading your textbook is not going to cut it. Your teacher teaches out of the textbook assigned to your class, so the information covered on your test will be from that specific textbook.

This book, however is a fantastic supplement if you are having a hard time understanding what your textbook is saying on the difficult microbiological concepts. It raised my test scores by an entire letter grade on the very first test I took after purchasing it! Highly recommended, as well as Anatomy and Physiology The Easy Way.

This book is filled with more ideas and activities than anyone could possibly do in the next millennium, but it sure would be fun at least trying to do some of them!

Just reading the book infused me with energy and optimism and a true sense of the importance of the beginning of a new century. More importantly, though, it reminded me of some of the simple "rules" to follow in order to live a life filled with light.

As a teacher, this will be a valuble resource in the classroom. Talk about some exciting journal topics and exciting projects! When we get back to school January 3rd, my students are going to create a millennium slogan and a millennium contest. Guess what the winners are going to receive? Yes, a copy of this book!

I call it "the big hatpin." We're all looking for more time/space for ourselves. This little book has short, easy-to-digest chapters (no major commitment required). Just the thing to get the mentally overburdened, physically underachieving boomer off the rear end and onto the feet -- so we feel we're claiming time and space for our own, not just "doing something I know I ought to do."

A lot of books on relaxation and stress-reduction are complicated and time consuming. Mindwalks is so simple. The concepts are easy to understand and they are not easily lost when you begin your journey. Start off slow with the book because it is so easy to read the whole thing through. Read a couple of different mindwalks and actually attempt them on a walk. It makes the book so much more enjoyable. Two thumbs up to Mary Frakes for an excellent, simple, and inspirational book.

As a Mum of (almost) four under four and a half, I don't have time for airy theories. I need something that will help me at the coal face! This book is it. It has a strong scriptural basis and inspires me to be a better Mum in practical ways without drowning me in guilt about the dishes still in the sink or the tiredness I sometimes feel. Mrs George is a real Titus 2 woman!

I got a lot out of this book, BUT...

This was not even close to Elizabeth George's book, A WOMAN AFTER GOD'S OWN HEART. Not even close.

After "Woman", my husband was telling me I was different -- he said he thought the book had made me a better woman.

I consider that pretty good feedback!

This book, while very meaningful, just was not as ... life-enhancing.

I would HIGHLY recommend A Woman After God's Own Heart by the same author.

Having dsaid that, there were a lot of great scripture and applications in this book.

I give it a four, and I would recommend it for all women, moms already or moms-to-be.

I do have one nit-picking complaint about the book -- Mrs. George uses "purpose" as a verb throughout the book, and it is jarring every time. As in, "purpose today to pray for your children." I think "commit" or "plan" or "prayerfully consider" would have been a more normal word usage, instead of "purpose". It bugged me so much that it became an inside joke for my husband and me. As in "Purpose today to go to the store and get me some orange juice."...or "Purpose today to cut the grass."... or "Did you purpose to turn out the lights upstairs?"

Love it!

I've been using the Motherpeace Tarot cards with the original version of this book for almost twenty years. The cards have a wonderful matriarchal/woman/goddess focus, and the book uses gender-nuetral language, so the cards can be used easily by both men and women. I continue to gain new insight and inspiration from this deck even after all these years! The detailed symbolism in the artwork is incredible, and the book is well organized to either read about the card in detail or get a quick summary. I don't usually use the cards in the suggested layout because it can take a long time to go through each position. I usually spend a little time centering myself and form a question or situation clearly in my mind, then shuffle and cut the cards and lay out one to three cards (one for just the situation, or three for past-present-future interpretations). I then spend some time looking at the cards to see what jumps out at me, then read about them in the book. Sometimes I'll keep a card from a reading out on my nightstand for a few days to continue contemplation of the image, or to remind me of an affirmation or message that came to me from the card. I don't necessarily use the cards for "telling the future", but rather as a tool to help me clarify and focus my intuition and thinking. Every now and then, for really key situations, I'll use the layout described in the book. It's very comprehensive and can be useful to help think about things in many different ways (atmosphere, hopes, fears, obstacles, conscious and unconscious impressions, etc.). I also use the Motherpeace Tarot Playbook by Vicki Noble and Jonathan Tenney, which goes into more detail on how to interpret cards that are leaning in one direction or the other, or are reversed (upside down). The Playbook also has more information about the recommended layout, and about using the cards with astrology and the chakras. I would recommend that anyone who plans to use these cards frequently get both of these books to use together. I've used other tarot decks, but have always come back to my Motherpeace cards!

I've used this book and matching Tarot deck for 7 years or so. (I go through phases where I consult it regularly and then periods when I don't use it at all.)

The book is easy to understand, explains in detail a lot of symbolism you might not know, and also offers a quick "if you get this card in a reading" section if you just want to zoom into your current reading. It importantly also encourages users to use the book for general understanding of symbols in the cards, and the larger context of the cards, and to trust in one's own intuition for readings.

One thing I really liked about the book is how the 22 Major Arcana cards tell a story of the history of the world--one that has not yet been completed. It is all a big cycle, with many little currents running through.

This is a tarot focused on the goddess, a panorama of earth-based and matrifocal cultures. But I am a man and have never felt astranged or put off by this focus... quite to the contrary it has been helpful.

Martial Arts at its best.

Moving Zen is an autobiography of one man's journey into the warrior traditions of Japan. It tells the story of a violence prone young man seeking authentic power through martial arts. This book takes one deep into these warrior traditions and their transformative power to change ourselves. As the author notes, the true meaning of Budo is the Zen state; no small feat to accomplish but herein lies the heart of the book.

This book is not only a true life adventure story, but a philosophy on life. In this verese, C.W. Nicole documents this journey as a beginning student of Karate and the Sempai who befriended him along the way including the Martial Arts legend Don Dregger. But it is much more than that, Nicole conveys something inexplicable in his verse that touches-the-power-of-life and the meaning it holds at a core level! In this sense, the book is powerful and compelling giving a good account of the rigors or martial arts training and the inside struggles to advance along this path. Perhaps more importantly is the synchronicity intercepting one life trajectory that brings people into our lives at the right moment for some hidden purpose.

This book remains a monumental best seller years after it was first published. It provides a primer for any aspiring martial artist seeking to study in Japan. Moreover, it captures a sense of beauty of these disciplined people who continue to live by a code of honor. Nicole Sensei emobodies that honor and mystery on every page. Great Book!

This is a magnificent book and although I teach a Chinese martial art, I strongly recommend that all of my senior students pick up a copy of it. I have read this book probably about a half dozen times. Sadly it was out of print for a long time, but recently came back in to print with a new subtitle "One Man's Journey to the Heart of Karate". I never understood why it was out of print at all. This book is a classic, and is the one that all other martial arts autobiographies are measured against. And I should know because I have read them all (check out my book Martial Arts Biographies-An Annotated Bibliography if you don't believe me). This book is referenced in countless indexes of other books. It really gives a great history of karate in Japan during the 60s. Nicol describes living with other martial artists from the west such as Donn Draeger. If you haven't read it, I strongly urge you to pick up a copy, and read it today.

Mr, Nicole tells about Karate from a Western viewpoint and how it was practiced in Japan after the war, but before it became mainstream in America. He recounts his interactions with the Japanese, some nice, some not so nice, and gives detailed accounts about his learning karate in the cold dojo with a wood burning stove as the only source of heat. His adventure is one that many of us envy but would not attempt, as he did and when he did. IN our current day of carpet on the floor, and three inch safety padding, Nicole's book provides a good account of what karate used to be like and should be like today.

Review Date: 2005-01-11
As a newly minted ShoDan in Shiho Karano Karate, I have to be skilled in knowledge as well as technique. To that end, I've been reading a number of books on various aspects of the martial arts. One part of that genre are the autobiographical accounts of Budo practitioners. I want to gain deeper insight into my own path through what others have experienced, learned, and how they changed as a result of their martial arts training. "Moving Zen" is one such tale, written by a Welshman who rose to black belt level in Japan during the early 60s. C. W. Nicol, an adventurous twentysomething, decided to immerse himself in the study of Karate. So he moved to Japan and began training at the Yotsuya dojo in Tokyo. "Moving Zen" chronicles the two-year period where Sensei Nicol progressed from a brawny and temperamental white belt to a skilled and calm first-degree black belt. First released in 1975, this newer small-sized edition includes an afterword written by the author in 2001, plus some vintage photographs and simple pencil illustrations.

Sensei Nicol writes with a very pure and austere style, so "Moving Zen" is a fairly quick read. There's not a lot of detailed exposition, although at times he tends to wax eloquent about the spiritual aspects of Nippon, particularly Zen within Karate (hence the title). Sensei Nicol is quite taken with Japanese culture, so you won't see much Western cynicism or skepticism here. Instead, he "went native," marrying a Japanese woman and eventually becoming a citizen of Japan. Of course, Sensei Nicol has his share of trials both in and out of the dojo, due to his hot temper and, ironically, being a gaijin (foreigner) in the somewhat xenophobic society he loves. But his respect, perseverance, and eagerness to learn Karate impress his Sensei and Sempai (not to mention his neighbors), so he eventually wins over even the hard cases. As his studies continue, Sensei Nicol slowly but surely matures and comes to grips with his penchant for "impetuous courage." Despite some slips that would've probably landed him in jail over here, he learns to calm his inner rage and become more tranquil. Indeed, the inner workings of Karate upon his spirit (vs. external fighting ability) become the most precious aspect of the martial arts to him.

I was humbled by Sensei Nicol's unswerving determination and dedication, as well as the harsh training he endured and blossomed under as a Karateka in Japan. One would have to really love the martial arts to deal with the ascetic military-style discipline, exacting technical requirements, and physical pain meted out by Sensei Nicol's superiors. He even had to commute three hours a day(!) via train to his dojo. I'm not sure I'd want to endure all that, although I got a small taste of it as a young Marine under a Japanese Sensei in Yokosuka, Japan. He never abused us, but we sparred full contact (with pads) and performed some extreme exercises, like doing wheelbarrows on our bare knuckles up and down the gym floor. I haven't seen many American dojos that hardcore, including my own. I stand by my current school, but I sometimes miss the intense level of training I had in Japan.

I read "Moving Zen" in conjunction with "Iron and Silk" by Mark Salzman and "Angry White Pyjamas" by Robert Twigger to get multiple perspectives on martial arts training. It's interesting to compare and contrast Sensei Nicol's early 60s presuppositions and experiences with those of Mr. Salzman's in the 80s and Mr. Twigger's in the 90s. Each book is a fascinating snapshot of a particular era, culture, and martial art style (Karate, Wushu, and Aikido). But despite their different philosophies, motivations, and levels of immersion, all of these men demonstrated personal growth and maturation through practicing the martial arts in a persevering way. I found that to be inspiring, and so I recommend all three books.

I think this is a book that could be enjoyed by anyone but really seems to speak to a woman's heart. As I read, I found myself thinking back on my own life experiences.

The author's strong spiritual sense comes through in her very entertaining takes on human relationships of all kinds. A very soulful lady!

Marilyn Dean is a gifted writer that sees far and beyond what first appears when dealing with life. We all should take a moment to enter her world, which will give you an omniscient view because we can all, relate to the positive and inspirational messages. Here are a few of my favorites... "God is", page 3, "Absentee Dad", page 73, "Please come in out of the rain", page 141 and "Final Wishes", Page 203. This collection is beautiful and breath taking. You will be happy you checked out her story, her way, her circle...

Mariyn comes to you from the heart, her experiences are in most cases yours. I had the honor of meeting with her and her sister Gwenn in Michigan during the month of 7/02. Again her style of writing relexs you and infuses you to try harder. Time has allowed her to be herself and to flow with her God giving talents.

A perfect gift

Jennifer Reif's blend of scholarship and practical advice makes for a dynamite book. Demeter is an incredibly important goddess, yet books about her that cover both theory and practice are rare. Go deeper into the myths with this incredibly well-researched book. Highly recommended for all pagans and especially for women in the Goddess movement.

An Interesting Take on Modern Paganism

I'll be honest, I bought this book from a more Persephone-centric thought process, but I ended up reading the whole thing. It's a very nice, symbolism-rich take on paganism, and I gleaned quite a bit from its pages. It has lots of prayers and a beautiful take on the Demeter/Persephone myth. An added bonus is the wealth of pages on making Greek costumes, garlands, crowns, masks, etc. I would save it just for those alone! Definately worth picking up if you can find it.

A fantastic reconstruction of the rituals of Demeter and Persephone of Eleusis, Greece. Wheel of the Year rituals are quite different from Wicca, but still grain cycle based, and still with many universal themes. Reif has done a lot of research and offers in-depth information on Demeter and Persephone, the clerics of the temple, the liturgy for the rites, planting grain, sacred foods, etc. A lovely book (some great color plates), beautifully made and a great read. I recommend this one highly!

This book is a wonderful resource for those interested in exploring Demetrian paganism or merely those who want to learn more about the Demeter/Persephone myth. I especially appreciated the detailed ritual scripts and descriptions of each of the festivals. The chants and poems were also very useful. The book is very dense, but it is a fast read and easily accessible.

A wonderful reworking of the Demetrian mysteries

This book is wonderful. I felt like I was there at the Mysteries while I was reading this book. It's so good to see something else Pagan, yet different out there that is not the same old BS of "cast your circle this way..." I like change & so this was a new way for me to celebrate the Wheel of the Year in a different light. Ms. Reif gets you involved making masks, head wreaths, and even gives you help if you want to grow your own wheat. This book was like a breath of fresh air ! HYE! KYE!
