I dream of cows...

I have a dream of someday owning my own cow, maybe a horse, and another pig or two. Being a city girl, I wouldn't have the foggiest notion what owmership of large domestic animals entails. This book lays it all out for you in very pragmatic terms. How much land you need, the total cost of caring for a cow as well as the potential revenue for the milk and cheese. And now, when my country friends are talking about their cow problems, maybe I can even offer a piece of profound advice! (doubtful on that), Buy it, enjoy it.

Keeping a cow is do-able!

This book encourages those of us who want to return to our farming roots and obtain the freshest dairy products possible from our own cow(s). He takes the fear out of stepping into caring for a cow for us first-timers. I can't wait to apply what I'm learning!

Good Information - Well written -but somewhat dated

The book covers the subject well and is carefully written. It stands alone in that there are no other books for the prospective owner of a single dairy cow rather than a herd. Some of the information is dated; recent improvements in genetics have more than doubled milk production and changed the needs for feed. There is a little philosophizing with a '70s back-to-the-lander slant which I found distracting.

Tons of information

This book has everything you need to know about owning your own cow...kinds of cows and their temperaments, purchasing a cow, how to care for it, fences and barns to build for it, milking, foods to prepare with the milk, breeding and calving, you name it. Much detail is given in each subject, including drawings and pictures, but the author avoids being a bore with his dry humor. We knew absolutely nothing about cows, but now feel some confidence after reading this book!

Quit reading these reviews and get this book! Every parent or professional who advocates for individuals on the autism spectrum needs to read, underline, and share this book with someone else. Parents will realize they are not alone in their feelings and experiences and professionals will gain much needed insight into the lives of the families who sit with them in IEP meetings and parent-teacher conferences.
I can't say enough good things about the practical advice in Ms. Sakai's book. For example, her chapter on tools for building a relationship with the school is priceless.
"Finding Our Way" is a unique resource that earns a spot on the "must have" list of books about Asperger Syndrome.

It takes a wise person to see the good news in the great struggles of living and Kristi Sakai has done it. Without offering any pat answers or any new "isms" she is able to show families with children with Asperger Syndrome what it means to not only survive but thrive. There is nothing in this book but good news and authentic observations. Obviously adept in the clinical and psychological issues affecting persons with AS, Mrs. Sakai takes you into her home and her heart and wants you to know that there is genuine hope and real help for you. Get it while you can. It's going fast, folks!

This is an excellent teaching tool for families with children who have Asperger's Syndrome. Kristi Sakai, the mother of three children with Asperger's provides excellent tips; explanations and vivid vignettes describing spectrum behavior. The book also includes funny little drawings that are clear and direct and people on the spectrum should have no difficulty decoding their expressions. I love this book!

Kristi Sakai was blessed with the gift of humor. Humor is one impetus that keeps this book rolling. I love her quick quips for judgmental comments people endure when their child is suffering during a meltdown or having trouble navigating on social territory. This book really is a Godsend!

One part that made me laugh was when Sakai wrote about a boy who disliked baths because of sensory issues and provided very real, very legitimate reasons for why he resisted enduring them. I also like the way she provided an alternative approach to ensure his cooperation during an unpleasant activity. The part that had me laughing was when she said her daughter Kaede, upon being needled about not liking to have her hair washed, said she didn't have to suffer that unpleasant activity - she poured the shampoo down the sink! (Sounds like the kind of thing I would have done - only I poured shampoo in the toilet at that age or in the tub and said it was bubble bath). In all honesty, hair washing is about the least favorite activity of many, myself included.

Regardless of where on the spectrum you are, on or off or someone directly involved with people who do have Asperger's, you will get a lot of mileage out of this book and will often turn to it. It is one of the best teaching guides I have ever come across.

Full of wit and wisdom! Required reading!

This is a must read for anyone who loves or cares for a child with asperger syndrome, be they parent, teacher, paraprofessional, babysitter, grandparent, Sunday School teacher or doctor. Written by one who has been down in the trenches and knows, this book is packed full of logical, doable and compassionate systems which parents can easily master in order to facilitate a more enjoyable existence for the whole family. You will feel like you have a found a new friend as you laugh at her poignant insights and find comfort in the shared experiences of aspergers. Evaluators and doctors would do well to hand this one out to parents of newly diagnosed children to serve as a soft cushion to ease the fall from what can be a devastating diagnosis. Ms. Sakai is a true friend who will help light a path to a way through what can be a dark time and find solace on the other side. Bravo!

Bibliotherapy

Full disclosure here: I'm a holistic doctor, so I'm biased towards natural interventions for mood disorders, and this is stuff that I talk to patients about on an almost daily basis. But I've seldom seen natural therapies for psychological conditions presented in such a balanced, clear, scientific fashion.

I sometimes blanch at the outlandish claims made by some health books that deal with mental conditions. I think they cruelly mislead patients to believe that there's a vitamin or a supplement for every psychiatric complaint. Reinforcing denial is not good for patients at risk to themselves and others. But Jack Challem is versed in the latest science, and never strays far from the evidence in making his case for natural approaches.

There's clearly a place for drugs in the treatment of mental disorders, but I wish books like this got wider circulation because we could relieve untold suffering with a few basic suggestions herein. Studies have actually shown that good self-help books cure sufferers of mild to moderate depression at a rate comparable to that of Zoloft, Paxil and other commonly used drugs. They've even coined a term for it: "Bibliotherapy"!

So take this book and call your shrink in the morning--it may really not be so far-fetched! I think I'll start stocking it in my dispensary to give to my patients.

Jack Challem seems to have written this book just for me. I was so tired of seeing doctors who merely prescribed multi-bad-effects medications and who each told me a different cause of my problems. I had to became very proactive to save my own health.

I was always exhausted, in body and spirit. I felt like I was in a constant brain fog, getting early Alzheimer's! I awakened more tired than when I went to bed, longing to take naps, no needing them. I have had fibromyalgia for 15 years and am taking medications for this, taking two medications which help tremendously but cause side effects. I have hypertension, am an adult with ADD. Like most people I am stressed, anxious, impatient, lack focus, taking care of an elderly parent......sound familiar? But I am an early retired teacher who loved her job and should be more relaxed and healthy. I want and need my active life-style back. I'm not "that old"!!

Well, I was literally sick from taking meds, so I picked up Mr. Challem's book just by chance and found I COULD help myself, was doing so many wrong nutritional things, made some of his easy, suggested changes and, to my disbelief, found great relief within two weeks! I have always taken supplements and watched my health - so I thought - but still felt bad most of the time. And only the suggestions made in this book have helped me feel so much better. This author makes sense.

In the easiest reading and well organized presentation, Mr. Challem specifically presents HOW food affects mood and four steps to change. He discusses real, every day problems: how to realistically reduce our levels of stress and anxiety, how to handle our irritability, how to have more energy. And his suggestions, fully explained so even I would understand them, worked!

He goes on to take us step by step through a "recovery" process in which we can "fix" ourselves - armed with nutritional understanding and easy to do changes in our diet and life style. And best of all Mr. Challem clearly points out the specific connections between foods and moods and gives the reader things to DO and things to avoid....along with some of the best recipes I have ever tried.

While all his information is data based, I could easily understand the author and put his connections and suggestions to use immediately. And they have made a wonderfully positive change in my health, my entire life.
And he sells no supplements!

This book is a perfect gift for any friend or family member (underlining and notes will have you hold on to your own copy!) who has hypertension, fibromyalgia, ADD, exhaustion, depression, who is overweight or those irritating characteristics of impatience, irritsbility, stress, obsessive-compulsive tendencies, forgetfulness ---- characteristics we certainly notice in THEM but seldom admit about ourselves!

Buy this book for your own health and sanity --- and some to give as gifts to those you care about. These ideas make sense and work.

I had difficulty understanding why I acted certain ways when my stomach was empty or full for that matter but now I know why I act the way I do after reading The Food-Mood Solution. My friends use to kindly remind me to eat something when I got too cranky for them to tolerate. Food really does effect your mood. If you don't think so, you really do need to read this book! Controlling moods with food is nothing new for me. The trouble was I went to the wrong foods for a quick fix that had a negative effect on my health, weight and moods. Jack Challem's book is full of stories I can relate to and it is worth the price for his recipes alone. They are terrific!

I can't express myself enough because it is so big, beautiful and educating, and Elissa Cobb uses many ways of saying and research things, so much work in it, so sophisticated, so heart connecting,. I connect with her in opinions, suggestions, and I am thankful for how earnest she is about to work it out. It isn't easy to write about life struggle and pain, but Elissa Cobb gets to the reader in many ways on her view of what has happened and to use the value of it in day to day life. Shared in a beautiful way. I am a thankful reader.

Elissa is a gifted teacher and guide and that shines through her writing. The Forgotten Body is informative and full of insights Elissa has gathered in her years as a personal trainer and yoga therapist as well as in her personal journey, yet her writing leaves room for my own experiences and ideas to mix with her perspectives and research. After reading The Forgotten Body I came away with a wealth of new ideas about the human physical and emotional bodies and their interconnectedness, and also I learned new ways to explore my personal experience of the interplay between the body and mind I inhabit.

The Body Knows

Review Date: 2008-09-06
Elissa Cobb has written an extraordinary book. Her premise is quite simple: Your body contains the keys to the age old quest of "knowing thyself." Through compelling scientific evidence and heartfelt personal testimony, Cobb rejects the predominately western idea that the "mind and body" are separate entities. The body, Cobb explains, is the vessel of all of our emotional, intellectual experience.

In elegant language, she proposes that those physical pains we experience reflect back to us something we have endured (or continue to endure) in our lives. Cobb asks us to become aware of what our bodies communicate to us, and in a loving, nonjudgmental way, coaxes us to understand more deeply where the meaning of those messages lie. From that understanding, we can begin the process of true healing. With this insight, Cobb takes us beyond the realm of intellectual "talk therapy." Through various exercises, (where yes, you do use your body), you become better attuned to what makes you-you. It is a process of continuous discovery, a constant journey that may lead you to unexpected, long forgotten places.

For those of us on a journey of self discovery, (who are most of us!)
I cannot recommend this book enough.

Written by one who knows, for those of us on the path to remembering, Elissa Cobb's book is full on so many levels. From science, to meta-science, from personal to anecdotal, from physical to emotional, to spiritual. I walked into the book with eyes wide shut and coaxed to open them wider - again and again. I particularly appreciate the "whos-who" found in the bibliography section. It was like putting all the best from my favorite books & writers together in one story - one that makes my story real for me. Thank you! Soleil*

A wonderful balance of research, personal stories and insight. This book made me feel like I had been stumbling around a dark room and someone turned the light on - suddenly I could see why parts of my life had felt so difficult and how I could make them easier. I've been living separately from my body and wondering why my body was being so combative.... As I was reading I kept sitting up and going "Oh! Of course!" I've been recommending this book to my students in earnest.

This book was very entertaining. I think it gives a good sense of the whole coming-out process and the immense challenges gay people face when they truly realize that they are gay and living in a straight society. Even if you are not gay, the book is funny and the main character is very likeable (and totally clueless). It is also quite a touching story of first love and the first time you meet someone who makes you feel like the most beautiful person in the world.

How could one not love the civilization that has contributed the foundations of the West and so much to the world we live in? Bruce Thornton analyses the achievements of the glorious Greeks, from their earliest history to their attitudes toward homoerotic love. This book is a must for all classics, history, anthropology, art history, philosophy, and political science students......or for anyone who wants to be enlightened. There is something Greek in all of us!

Good case for the impact of Greece on Western culture

Review Date: 2004-10-31
The controversy about whether Greek civilisation was the main source of western civilisation's ideas about freedom, rationality etc... doesn't rage as much here as in the US, where a number of writers have, unconvincingly in my view, sought to argue that the Greeks borrowed much of their ideas on rationality, logic, freedom etc.. from other civilisations and in particular from Egypt.

So when I wanted read more about Greek influence on Western civilisation I dreaded a book which was merely a defense against these and other politically correct theories. Instead, although the author makes reference to this controversy, the book stands on its own in describing Greek civilisation and its enormous influence on today's world. The author does not pretend that the Greeks formed a cultural monolith, where everybody was convinced of the power of reason. But his very wide range of sources is persuasive enough that many of the ideas that were necessary building blocks for the rise of Western civilisation, such as that there should be a rational explanation for natural phenomena, originated with Greek thinkers. The fact that some of these paid for their ideas with their life (like Socrates) does not diminish the fact that the Greeks were there first.

What did I miss in this book ? I would have liked more about the transmission of Greek ideas to the West, i.e. how we lost much of this philosophical heritage only to regain it at the time of the renaissance. Secondly, although the author on a number of occasions asserts that other contemporary civilisations had not reached such and such a level, I would have liked to see more detail on this. I also thought that it was odd to devote the first 2 chapters (almost a sixth of the book) on sexual relations in ancient Greece, an area where I think Greeks did not influence the West much. I also think that the long section on the Greek's treatment of slaves has to be seen more in the US context (anything to do with slavery is highly sensitive and pays to be seen to have been good with slaves) than as an influence on Western culture.

Although J Roberts' Triumph of the West sets out a more eloquent case for the rational influence of ancient Greece, this book makes argues for a much wider influence, i.e. not just Rational Man, but also Political Man, freedom of expression, etc... For this it deserves to be read. It is far from perfect, but it is also fairly concise

Bruce Thornton has written a wonderful book cataloging the many intellectual achievements of classical Greece in the realms of reason, science, ethics, political freedoms, law, historical documentation and art. The author also does an excellent job refuting two common charges against this monumental civilization: 1.) that the Greeks were whim-worshipping hedonists who would never pass up an opportunity to indulge in short-term sexual pleasure and 2.) that the distinguishing characteristic of Greek civilization is that they were all slave-owning misogynists.

The chapters refuting these claims are worth the price of the book alone. To address these claims, the author encourages the reader to reflect upon the content of classical Greek law and classical Greek art. The author argues that there were in fact many laws prohibiting sexual relations with minors and there were popularized Greek myths where the moral was the dangers of hedonism (e.g., the immolation of Heracles.) Moreover, the author identifies how women were often portrayed as cunning, witty and capable of using their minds to achieve noble political ends in both Greek myths and Greek theater (e.g., Aristophanes' Lysistrata.)

Needless to say, the author does not attempt to claim that the Greeks were flawless and nor should he. However, the author does exhibit that he understands that the Greeks have made numerous monumental intellectual contributions to Western Civilization. Moreover, the author seems to understand that while certainly flawed by many of today's standards with respect to the rights of women and slave ownership, the Greeks should be judged in the context of their time and in that frame of reference were overwhelmingly good.

For these reasons, I whole-heartedly recommend this well-written and delightful book!

I was truly enlightened while reading this book. Not only did it give me new information, but it also got me interested in reading other books about the Greeks.

I found this book to be truly informative, spiritual, and humorous. My Aunt always tells me that God has the answers to all our problems. Well, the good Doctor has convinced me! Dr. Eaker uses the bible to show us that God does have a plan in PMS andMenopause. This is one of my favorite quotes from the book; it is the twenty-third Psalms, from the bible, with a little Eaker touch!"The Lord is my shepherd: I have everything I need. He lets me rest in green meadows; (even with hot flashes) He leads me beside peaceful streams. (in the middle of night sweats) He renews my strength. (when fatigue takes over) He guides me along right paths, brining honor to his name. (shows me options) Even when I walk, through the dark valley of death, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me. (depression cannot rule me) Your rod and your staff protect and comfort me. (herbs and vitamins too) You prepare a feast for me in the presence of my enemies. You welcome me as a guest, anointing my head with oil. (flaxseed, Chamomile) My cup overflows with blessings. (At least I am here to experience Menopause, the other option is not so great) Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me all the days Of my life, And I will live in the house of the Lord forever. (wrinkles and all)One thing I really liked about this book is the fact that the author fully expects us to get as much knowledge on our health and to act on it. He does not expect us to use himself as our sole source of information. He is quick to point out that WE control our way ofthinking. Some restructuring of how we think could alleviate a big portion of the symptoms associated with PMS and Perimenopause. I have always thought along these lines, but never seemed to fully achieve my goals. Dr. Eaker tells us how. He shows us some very realistic goals, and how to best achieve them, by taking them one at a time! Dr. Eaker understands that we cannot make all lifestyle changes in over night, and that we need to take them step-by-step.Dr. Eaker is quick to offer advice on methods to dealing with PMS and menopause, be it hormonal therapy or herbs, diet, and our spiritual well-being. He is a wealth of information on other sources to gather the information we seek, the bible, other publications, and of course the Internet, with some sites provided.Thank you Dr. Eaker for helping me to see the things that were just beyond my view, and teaching me what I need to do to help myself through PMS and later, the glory that can be found in menopause.

This is a truly unique book in the world of PMS and Menopause. Ron has done an excellant job of explaining, from a biblical perspective as well as very balanced and sound medical insight, that there is a way around experincing all of the moans and groans of this changing "season" in all women's lives. If only more women knew that there were alternatives to the "it's time to take hormones" regime which seems to be so prevalent in today's world this world would be better off. He emphasizes what diet and lifestyle changes will do to improve so many of the problems associated with PMS and Menopause. He also shares wonderful and much needed information in the area of working with the body as well as trying natural herbs and supplements BEFORE resorting to drugs. His emphasis on the healing power of prayer is being proven today in many medical studies ... finally! Please, please buy this book if you care about your health! It will help you!

This is an excellent book and I recommend it highly! This book is well worth the money & time to read. This is not just another "menopause" book but rather describes this transition in a positive light -- using diet, exercise, alternative approaches, & prayer to achieve wellness. I have found it very helpful dealing with perimenopause & PMS.

What an incredible book. Every aspect of natural healing and real answers to dealing with menopause and being a woman. Dr. Eaker is amazingly intuitive, funny and compassionate. I can't begin to tell you the difference this book made in my life. Highly recommended read for all of my friends and in fact, my teenage daughter has used her highlighter freely throughout my personal copy. I need to get her one of her own. To Dr. Eaker and Susan, thank you.

This is a Christian based small book of 109 pages with nine chapters. The first two chapters are all about your child and choosing curriculum. She then jumps right into Reading Methods and Writing Strategies followed by Social Studies and Science. Chapters 7 and 8 are about support and encouragement as you homeschool after which she deals with the extras such as music, foreign language, art, etc. in short snippets. Finally, the appendix is filled with a list of Newberry and Caldecott medal winning literature. I found the book quite informative and chock full of resources, ideas, strategies and methods for homeschooling. It is well written, easy to read and the cartoons throughout are good for a chuckle. I'm glad I bought it.
