Wonderful Ways to Love a Child
I wish I had this book when my children were growing up. I bought this for my daughter when she had her first daughter. It is a great reference manual with good suggestions for any parent on ways to guide your child as he or she grows up to be a well-balance, loving, child, - adult, and at the same time develop a close relationship with them.

Can you combine love and wisdom and deep insight while writing in a simple, inspiring style? Judy Ford has written "Wonderful Ways to Love a Child" in such a direct way that you feel warmed by her words at the same time you are inspired by them. I am so grateful that this book was written.

Many years ago when my children were in pre-school I bought your book.
When the kids were toddlers and I was tired and feeling swamped and

cranky, it helped remind me what was important and what was not. My
kids are in 8th, 6th and 4th grade now and life is busy and fun. I
pulled your book off of the shelf to find a quote for a friend and found
myself re-reading many of the stories. Your book centers me and sort of
re-sets my attitude toward parenting. Your stories are concise and
insightful; I appreciate your sense of family and fun. Just wanted to
say thanks for the times when your book has helped me.

Ms Ford. will stress the same point over and over again from very different angles. If you want your raise your kid as a responsible, caring, inquiring, loving and lovable adult, you shall not use fear, cohersion and guilt as the tools of your education. Chances are that you will fail in a big way.

Rembember that children are independt beings who need your support and guidance, not your control. Be open to what they came to teach you and both will benefit in ways which no words can precisely define, since they will take you to the world of the spirit.

The author makes sure that every parent who reads this book mustr a clear understanding that feeling love is not enough you MUST express it.

Better than all my huge parenting books!

I wish I had read this 'gift' book before I spent so much money on all the other parenting books that I have bought. These little stories/anecdotes/lessons are very helpful reminders in aiding me to be a mindful, caring parent in this world full of distractions. I have just purchased this for all my mommy friends as a Mother's Day gift. I plan to keep this on my bedside table to read a new chapter everynight to remind me to provide loving, attentive companionship to my daughter. The stories are short and well written - even my husband with his very short attention span finds them wonderful.

I have a problem with the guy that only gave four stars. This book is a must have. I've been working with wood off and on for nearly 40 years, and by page 5 I was sitting back and laughing at my ignorance. Lots of his stuff is obvious; you just haven't thought of it before, and it just keeps coming. This book will probably save you the purchase price on the cost of stock you don't waste in the first month.

It covers everything, from how to sharpen a carpenter's pencil to advanced techniques in complex cuts, and by the way, you will probably start by changing the way you sharpen your pencil.

A Great Book

I bought this book awhile back and thought it was pretty good. Lately I have been attempting to refine and improve my woodwork efforts and I have come back to this book over most of the others I own. This is a cornerstone reference and I would put it in the same category as the Tage Frid series as well as some of the better Taunton Illustrated books. I would seek it out even though it appears out of print.

Great book for beginners and advanced woodworkers

The author does a great job of describing in detail just about every aspect of woodworking, from cutting to glueing to sharpening to finishing. There is a lot to cover and he does it very succinctly and with enough detail and various methods that the reader is given a LOT of ideas on how to go about any given project.

The hardcover is a beautiful book. Even if the content wasn't as good as it is, it is still a beautiful book to look at.

The Wright brothers were an amazing team. Working part time, these two previously undistinguished bicycle dealers from Dayton, Ohio, solved a problem that had baffled, frustrated and defeated (sometimes fatally) some of the most well-educated, well-capitalized and well known scientific entrepreneurs of their and all prior time. The story of how and why they succeeded in creating and flying the first airplane is not only fascinating, but also rich in didactic value for parents, teachers and businesspeople. Author Mark Eppler does an admirable job of drawing you into the story of the Wright brothers. We relishe the problem-solving principles he defines, which are, at times, refreshingly unorthodox. He abstracts these principles well and phrases them clearly, but the best demonstration of the principles lies in his retelling of the Wright brothers' absorbing story. A very good book indeed.

I have made it a point to read all the best selling business books to keep abreast of any new concepts in selling and management. Most books are long on theory and short on application. Or worse, very entertaining, but lacking enough detail do to anything more than enjoy the read!

The Wright Way is masterfully written to offer the reader problem solving principles related to issues that companies are experiencing NOW along with an added bonus of historical context and current events that emphasize relevancy. Technology has made it possible for companies of all sizes to become global thereby increasing the challenges (problems) a business can face. Mr. Eppler presents the reader with an outline that companies can employ whether the problem be related to technology, product lines, facilites, mergers, markets or culture within the organization. The Wright Way is not only a read, but a re-read!

It is not often that you can pick up a "managment principles" book and find it to also be entertaining and inspiring. This book is. One might think, or expect, that The Wright Way would be a "gimmick book", rehashing old managment principles with a Wright brother's twist, just to capitalize on the publicity surrounding the 100th anniversary of the first heavier than air flight. Not so. The obvious exhaustive research that went into this book reflects the authors passion about "how" the Wright brothers did what the did, not just what they did. As the CEO of a $6 million not-for-profit business, the "seven principles" struck home for me. For starters, from now on I'm going to tackle the tyrant at the get go! Enjoy this eassy, fun, and useful read.

This book is a great idea! Take one of the greatest inventions of the 20th Century and breakdown the framework that lead to its creation.

The book is well researched and the author's conclusions about the Wright Brothers appear to be firmly grounded in fact and history. My only criticisim, and it is minor, is the book would have been a 5-star if the author had included more modern business management examples to support his 7 problem solving techniques. Curent business solution stories that parallell the Wright Brothers techniques would have really hammered the points home.

Overall, excellent book.

I read this book when I was in my early teens. It brought me such emense joy, that when asked my favorite book, it always springs to mind. When it is not kosher for a 20-something woman to admit that she still loves a teen romance novel, I do. It always brings back wonderful memories, and it makes me happy just to remember the characters. Bruce and Darby are as much of my teenage years as algebra and history. So, if you are fortunate enough to read this book, savor it.

This remains my favourite Sweet Dreams book of all time and that's saying a lot as I own 250 books of the series! I'm a sucker for the cliché romantic formula of hate at first sight, even more when it's partnered with the `girl and boy pretend to be a couple' formula. This plot is by no means original but it's a refreshing, fun and witty read. Darby and Bruce meet when their cars collide into each other's and shortly realize it's a small world after all when Darby's cousin sets her up on a blind date later that day with none other than Bruce himself. Accusations of being a `Neanderthal' and a lousy driver are flung back and forth until Darby has to enlist Bruce's help in an attempt to get rid of the unwanted attention from another student.

The characters are endearing without being obnoxious and their run-ins with each other are hilarious. I owned this book when I was a teenager and lost it when I loaned it to a friend. It took another 10 years to track it down through ebay just as I was about ready to buy another copy of it somewhere else for $50!!! I've read this book many times, even now as a 30-year old and I always finish it with a smile on my face.

Definitely a must-have

For anyone who has ever argued about chips v. crudite with their husband, this is the book for you. Very insightful and realistic look at how we eat and how it affects those around us, including how someone ELSE eats effects our own eating habits (anyone remember dating that guy and gaining 10 lbs. on his diet of beer and wings?). Fun little vignettes and quizzes keep the book flowing. A must read for anyone struggling with their partners' eating habits.

Co-authored by Murray Spiegel and Rickey Stein, and featuring an informative foreword by Theodore Bikel, "300 Ways To Ask The Four Questions" provides a fascinating , colorfully illustrated, 368-page examination and presentation of the Sedar (including both the Jewish holiday meal and service) from the perspective of a variety of languages and cultures. This massive reference work is the result of some twenty-five years of research in the collection of translation of the Four Questions that form the basis of the Sedar celebration. Contributions were provided by Jews from Uganda to Uzbekistan, the languages range from Abkhaz to Zulu, and even includes sign language. Of special note are the contributions by experts of ancient languages -- including Egyptian from the time of the Exodus. Substantially enhanced with both a CD and a DVD with language and speaker highlights, "300 Ways To Ask The Four Questions" also features a variety of fun games, puzzles, and parodies., making it a unique and enthusiastically recommended addition to personal, family, synagogue, academic, and community library Judaic Studies reference collections.

You might ask that question and the answer would be lots. I've shown the book to several teenaged children and they found the book as fascinating as adults. Whether you're specifically interested in Judaica or foreign language and culture, the book has something for everyone. It's lots of fun to find out where languages are spoken and by how many people or just to see how many of the countries you've heard of or could find on a map. I enjoyed reading about the languages and the individuals that had done the translations. I was especially impressed by the beautiful layout and enjoyed seeing what each written language looks like. This book would make a great gift for anyone attending a Seder or interested in the world in general.

After cooking and cleaning all week, I stayed up late the night before the first seder to read this book. I just couldn't put it down! I brought it to our friends' house for seder, and we spent more than an hour passing the book around, taking turns reading the questions in every language we had even a passing acquaintance with, and many we didn't! We couldn't stop laughing, but it also sparked some interesting discussions of past seders we'd attended and Jewish customs we'd experienced in other countries. I plan to buy several copies for family and friends before next Pesach!

You have got to read this book. It's a rule, or maybe even a Commandment.

If you're a misplaced son or daughter of the South, or more specifically Southern-style religion, then let Beverly Roberts and the Rev. Arnold Chister be the first to welcome you home. In 365 Ways to Criticize the Preacher, author Pat Job has woven the realities and fantasies of one faded daughter of the once noble homeland into a web of genteel seduction. No matter how hard you try to maintain your new age distance from that old time religion, you don't stand a chance of escaping the gospel according to Jobe.

Laugh at the one-liners, nod your head knowingly at the parade of small town characters straight out of your own experience, enjoy the time you spend certain that Beverly Roberts is right or wrong -- go ahead, take your time. The good Reverend can wait -- wait until you've laughed and cried yourself into oneness with the truth he has woven for you. He can wait until the reader's journey becomes inseparable from Beverly's own. And he will still be waiting when you reach the end of this short, powerful epic and find yourself shadow-dancing backward into the arms of grace right along with her.

Pat Jobe dares to expose the wastelands of his own religious background to bring us back to the original truth that love has always been the only answer to all our questions. Whatever personal enlightenment you find visiting the Grand Canyon with Beverly Roberts, you will never be the same.

A note to Pat Jobe: When the Bubbas appeared at the Purple Onion earlier this year, I bought your book "365 Ways to Criticize the Preacher".
I have just finished reading it and wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed it.  It would be great if we could all be
transformed as much as Beverly Roberts and know, as she seems to, that the process is never over.

Being the liberal Episcopalian that I am, I laughed and cried (sometimes simultaneously) as you lampooned some of our
personal expectations of who is "in" and who is "out".

It was a joy to read and I thank you for it.

At first I thought, criticize the preacher?? Who would do that? But being honest with myself, I guess I've been guilty of that too. Horrors! What a thing to admit. And to a preacher-man like Pat Jobe. Forgive me.

When I started reading 365 Ways, I thought it was going to be a good-natured spoof of small Southern churches. Fun reading. Well, it is that. But it's far more. As I progressed with Beverly's diary, I became an observer to the woman she really is, though sometimes judgemental of her. Soon my own hurts erupted, tears filled my eyes, and I realized that Pat Jobe had weaved book of healing. I was right there with Beverly , looking on and wanting to let go of my hurts, but afraid. We were not so different after all.

Now I'm reading it again, but with new light. Thank you, Pat Jobe, for the light you shed on this sometimes weary reader. And thank you for showing me the way to the Grand Canyon.

I may read 365 Ways again.

I first read it through for the story. And a good story it is. A thoroughly believable character dealing with 70 years of experience as a genuine woman of the foothills. The story traps you with humor and the struggle of Beverly having to deal with the situations not of her making or choosing.

I then read it again for the theology. Christians, Jews, Muslims, and any other group oriented to the inborn worth of all humans and the need to relate to each other with compassion will remember this little book long after most others are forgotten.

A thoughtful and wonderful gift [for the price].

"I laughed.  I cried.  I felt.  I thought.  And I don't do any of those easily or naturally."  Those are my initial reactions to "365 Ways to Criticize the Preacher."  I bought the book in February at the Mainstream Baptist Network meeting in Birmingham.  Being a Baptist preacher, I scanned it, curious that there were that many ways to tell me and my type that we weren't doing it right!  To my pleasant surprise, it is one of the best things I have read in a long time.  I only have about two dozen Beverly Roberts types in my current church and more than that in my last one.  More frightening than that, I slip into some of those behaviors as I get older.  As I read, I was reminded of Archie Bunker, and how Normal Lear invited America to look at the absurdities of his character.  Occasionally, the better side of Archie would come through, but not for long.  Your character experienced redemption, but was still in the process at the end (i.e., "I still don't like his haircut.")  I have finished the book and am ordering five more copies for friends and to put in the church library.   I thank you so much for the book.

The author explains some of her own spiritual journey and personal challenges in language that makes sense for today's fast-paced world. Imbedded in the text are several wonderful prayers which I have copied down and positioned near my desk at work and in other key locations. Having read the book to its end, I am sure that I will refer to Adventures in Prayer many times in the future.

Because her writing style is so natural and she gives such practical advice, this book can reach people on all levels in thier prayer journey. I love her practices, affimations and prayers in each chapter. I am now on my third reading of this book. It is so rich with information that I continue to consult several chapters. Because of this book, I am beginning a prayer circle at my church!

Alexander Seinfeld's book gave me extremely useful tools and exercizes to help me see my religion as a privalegde and an oportunity to come closer to our Creator. The ideas in the book are easy to apply and effective. Anyone that reads the book will certainly benefit from the ideas and exercises that it teaches.

Rabbi Seinfeld gives some good insight on Jewish Spirituality in comparison to spirituality of other faiths. One gets a pretty good feel as to the roots of the such texts as the Zohar and even Kabbalah. Good insight into prayer and the hebrew language.

In some spots, the text is a little bit too deep for a layperson to understand right away. However, there are other moments which may enable you to reread such sections. It definitely has potential as a reference tool.

I am reading and slowly working on absorbing and making my own this illuminating book. There is so much to learn and I am going at it slowly as the author suggests. I am thankful for this wonderful gift and I will indulge myself in the CD soon.

Wow! For Jews who have looked elsewhere for meditation (like I did) this is a welcome surprise: we didn't have to leave OMMMM after all...

And for Frum Jews whose brachas sometime become a little unemotional (like me), Rabbi Seinfeld's "mind manual" will put a lot more KICK into them! You'll even surprise yourself with your kavanah...

I have read many books and attended many seminars on spirituality and Judaism. Rarely have I found anything that comes close to this precious gem. Really it's two gems - the book and the CD.

Several things make Seinfeld's book unusual or even unique. First of all, it's highly intellectual. At the end of each chapter, I felt a real sense of clarity and ownership of the ideas and practices taught. This may be because I actually did the exercises according to the instructions of each chapter. But for the first time in my reading and searching I feel like I have a healthy intellectual grasp of these terms that I've been trying to understand - God, life, meaning, spirituality, goodness, love -

Second, it's not dogmatic - coming from a secular (raised Reform) background, I have been trying to figure out how to become more connected to my Jewish roots without becoming "religious". This book has done it for me.

Third, the author's secular/Buddhist background has enabled him to write interesting footnotes comparing and contrasting Jewish thought and practice with these. This information is helpful to me as I'd always assumed that every great religion was saying basically the same thing and Seinfeld tactfully points out where that is not true.

Fourth, the book is incredibly thorough, full of nuggets of information that together have shown me a Judaism that is not a hodge-podge of traditions but rather an awesome - amazing - holistic system.

It's as if I'd been staring at the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle for a few years and suddenly somone showed me a picture of what they're supposed to look like when completed. Now I can start to put them together on my own.

The CD, which Amazon sent with the book for no extra cost, is Rabbi Seinfeld teaching the concepts in the book. It's high-quality - sounds like he's right in the room with you! It is a very effective tool, because after listening to the CD the book made sense and was easy to read (otherwise, I might have struggled with some sections that are quite deep in the philosophy/mysticism).

I also like the fact that the appendix includes email addresses to contact the author and others. I have found these resources very responsive to my questions.

In summary, the book is like a handbook. I carry it around with me and find myself re-reading some sections while waiting in line at the bank, etc - especially the chapter on love.

This had to be writing that was inspired by greater beings. The words were heard not only by my ears but within my body. My relationships and my relationshp to myself were altered immediately. This was a real person not wanting to impress anyone, but to inspire and awaken those that read his words. I am grateful to the writer for taking the time to inspire others to be honest and real instead of nice and "should." I recommend this book to others not because it is just a good read, but because it helps us all be real with each other

Step into the life of Bruce Scott and find yourself stepping into your own. If you choose you can put into practice a step by step guide to being real in all relationships beginning with yourself. The reader learns what being real looks like, and when applied to the self what it feels like. Through storytelling and personal disclosure, Bruce demonstrates how one can be both gentle with themselves while taking themselves seriously, and decide moment to moment how to act from inside rather than from how we're "supposed" to act or be in the world.

It has taken me several months to review this book..which is just right..i previously thought i had reviewed it after having read it for the first time..(i am currently reading it for the third time..) but somehow my review never made it to the computer screen..this book has become to mean so much to me..each time i read it-i learn new things about myself and about relationships. each time i read it, i notice more, i feel more, i laugh and i cry more. in between reading this book, i have started to learn how to notice things..how to listen to my body, how to be intimate with people..all people, and what that really means..to be intimate..i have begun to learn how to stay with myself..to follow my heart..although at times it has been hard..and truthfully, as bruce says in the book.."friends will drop away" - they have..and while those experiences have been challenging..they were just right..this is more than a book..it is a way to get to know yourself..to learn how everything is relationship. everything. it is work, to be real..at times i have become lazy in terms of my awareness, my presence, my quest to remain "real"..and have noticed at those times, i begin to physically feel weak..tired, farigued..depleted. i encourage everyone to read this book and to share it with anyone you wish to..it will be a fantastic surprise!

Revealing the Veil

I wondered, as I contemplated what to write, how much if any I should reveal about my personal relationship to the author of Being Real, Bruce Scott. I quickly realized it is not important. What is important is that reading his book affirmed many of my own most sacred beliefs. I live in the body of a "minority" person and have had numerous experiences that lie outside the perihery of the mainstream. I have sought through many channels ways to affirm and support my existence in the world. The words and experiences contained within the pages of Being Real: An Ongoing Decision often had the effect of bringing me home to a place I know in my most sacred self. There were many times I felt relieved to have words put to some of my innermost thoughts about myself and the world I live in. Bruce has a deft way of uncovering the myriad ways in which we indidually and collectively limit and repress that force in us which wants to live and and do so fully. This book is a must if you believe that we have yet to tap our collective potential. That potential can only be realized as we individually risk, as often as we are capable, being real. Real with our intuitions, body sensations and that still small voice knocking at the door of our hearts to bring us more compassion for ourselves and others. Bruce Scott's book is a signpost on that path. Do yourself a favor. Read it and share it with others.

In Being Real, Bruce Scott reminds me of the magic of living. Unlike many books that leave me awed but somehow discouraged by the gap to my own life, Being Real is inspiring because it feels so close, so encouraging for my own experiences and perceptions. Bruce Scott's story is personal--he speaks from his heart, from inside his own struggles and confusion...and the fire of awareness that comes from there. Through his own journey, he takes the not-so-fantastic stuff of everyday life--relationships, odd encounters, dreams and the environment--and reveals its absolutely fantastic nature. Out of sleep-walking comes the magic of daring to follow yourself, your body, curiously discovering what that humble wisdom is all about. This book is a radical living practice, touching me deeply. In fact, Bruce's book is a star on the map for me, saving my life by saying through the "crazy" is the magic is the real. Thank you.
