This is a fab book for anyone who really wants to get to the nitty-gritty of not only the tarot, but of themselves. It takes the reader through the most interesting and painless of ways of getting to know a new deck, and the deeper realms of reader and sitter.
The first I was introduced to the writings of Mary K. Greer was through this book and it is a revelation. If the reader is willing to get to the heart of any matter, this book is a great guide to finding some solid answers to the whys, whats, hows, wheres of your question. It is a lesson in patience and rewarded in an enlightenment which endures. Enjoy this read, it's an eyeopener!

This book is fantastic! I love the way the exercises walk you through all the individual detials of the cards. The authors teaching style makes it very easy to absorb AND RETAIN all that you have learned. I have several friends who have been reading tarot for years and they were amazed with how quickly I learned. I would absolutly recommend this to any beginnner or experienced reader looking to add a whole new level of depth to their readings.

Best Resource for Learning to Read Tarot on the Market

This workbook is an invaluable resource for anyone interested in learning tarot or improving their reading skills. It is suitable for beginners, intermediates, and advanced alike. I have been studying and practicing tarot for about 15 years, and really wish this book had been available to me when I started out.

21 Ways to Read a Tarot Card teaches you how to look at the cards and really see what is there. It gives you a foundation in things such as deck structure, numerology, elemental correspondences, dignities, etc., and teaches you how to put it all together with your intuition. The book really helps you build confidence in your reading abilities, while teaching you at the same time. A true gift.

I approached the book by doing all 21 Ways at the Apprentice level, and then going back and doing all 21 Ways at the Adept level. Some steps come very naturally, others are more challenging, and some feel awkward, but the results of doing all 21 Steps are very rewarding.

What you learn in 21 Ways to Read a Tarot Card will allow you to put down the "crutches" when you read, and let you enjoy the experience. This book is about breaking down barriers, pre-conceived notions, and "quick" interpretations. If you are new to tarot and do not have any of these habits, then it will help you develop into a strong reader without having to unlearn or break habits that create barriers to learning tarot. If you rely on "crutches" or have confidence issues it will help you overcome that. If you are already a strong confident reader, then it will give you some new ways to explore the cards and enhance what you are already doing.

Hello all

I am part of a study group going through this book. What an adventure I thought having tarot cards for years that there was no way there would be this many ways to " see" a card. But was I wrong , and gladly so.

We finished all the apprentice steps and are about to start on the adept part now and truly I am a much better reader then i though I ever could be.

One warning though it takes work and time to apply everything but the rewards are very much worth it.

((This review was written by my wife Lisa Hunt. She does not have an Amazon account but has read this book. Lisa is a tarot author/artist so is well qualified to add her thoughts to these reviews.))

This book is a tarot treasure trove that has something for everyone regardless of one's level of expertise. Even if you aren't a tarot reader or are completely new to the art of divination, Greer's book contains a comprehensive overview of the many uses of tarot. Her presentation is well thought out and stands on a strong foundation of research that parallels Greer's own journey as a tarot reader and teacher. She successfully integrates the theories and terms postulated by 20th century psychoanalyst Carl Jung, adding dimension to this fascinating text.

Regardless of scholastic influences, she never strays from her earthy voice making this book interesting and informative without being offputting. Not only does she include interesting personal anecdotes and sample readings, but she offers excellent suggestions for enhancing one's own intuitive skills. The book is replete with effective exercises that are fun and helpful and can be practiced over and over again. Some of these ideas examine themes/motifs and others help the reader to become more acquainted with symbolism and others examine more subtle elements of tarot. Greer gives us examples of how to answer tricky questions and expand on a reading by utilizing the nuances of an image or allowing the intuitive spirit to flow more freely. She also gives us tips on how to rephrase the querent's question to help free up any potential stumbling blocks during a reading.

Even if you don't gravitate to a particular activity or agree with all of her methods, Greer provides simple yet potent tools that can serve to expand one's own rapport with the cards. It's a fun-packed volume filled with Greer's unique wisdom that is sure to please tarot enthusiasts everywhere. Also included is an excellent glossary that can be used as a quick reference guide.

EXCELLENT book. A Coach or parent must read . Easy to understand with a vast amount of effective baseball knowledge with great illustrations . I especially like section that covers understanding kids emotions and psychological effects of ups and downs on players . Most parents and coaches do not realize how they can have a long term negative effect on a player. This book brings a whole new light on to the subject.

This book isn't bad. I have not finished reading it, but it does give quite a bit of useful information. However, Cal seems to repeat himself several times in the book. There are many books out there that offer adequate, if not better, knowledge of how to play the game. Louisville Slugger's book is good as well as Coaching Pitchers. I would suggest only buying this book if you are a die hard baseball fan and plan on collecting many books. One good thing about the book is that Cal does give that sense of how to be a good teammate and maybe even a great family member.

I picked up this book at the local sporting goods store while I was buying gloves, bats, socks, pants, and etc. for my two sons who were starting little league baseball.

Just a few weeks earlier, I had declined a spot as an assistant coach due to not being "athletic", and I saw Ripken's book as an opportunity to learn some of the things that other dads had learned as kids.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I have not read it cover-to-cover, but have browsed and spot-read it throughout the season.

As a result, I now understand more of the things other dads are yelling out. For example, for those in the field, "keep your eye on the ball" means watch the ball from the beginning of the pitch, all the way to the bat, as it connects with and leaves the bat, then all the way to the glove.

Chapters are given for each of the aspects of the game, pitching, fielding, hitting, catching, running, and so forth. Text narratives are easily understood, avoiding or explaining the sports "jargon" that confuses many beginning players (e.g. "choke up on the bat", "take two"). Pictures explicitly illustrate concepts such as batting and fielding stances.

Ripken's narrative also provides fun training excercises used by coaches (both major and little leagues) to develop baseball skills.

I have kept this book within an arm's reach in my office all summer long. Ripken's baseball insights have enabled me to help my sons develop their own throwing and batting skills.

Maybe next year, I might take that assistant coach position!

business coaching to prevent being trampled by the bulls of business

Tim Irwin's radical idea of running beside son while outrunning the bulls in Spain didn't actually sound that interesting at first; but after hearing from so many people who loved this book I decided to check it out and I'm so glad I did. It's a quick read built around three key concepts... which the author then takes and develops through 7 more principles. The three core concepts are:

1) Thoughtful Commitment
2) Authentic Character
3) Exceptional Competence

While I hadn't thought about some of the dangers in business being like running for your life from a raging bull- it made a lot of sense and he weaved that concept into every section of the book. If you have ever felt like you were running away from something in your professional life and didn't know what it was, you'll probably relate strongly with this approach, which tags those 'bulls' in a really creative way.

He uses a number of personal illustrations, which made it feel conversational and more relaxed in his writing style. I especially liked the online assessment idea as a coaching tool and additional resource.

This book is well worth the purchase price if you are a manager or someone looking for a creative approach to get people talking about high stress situations.

Excellent resource if you are in the corporate world. Sound, common sense advice with bibical references without being too "preachy". Would use for a motivational tool for any level of management, customer service or retail establishment.

Commitment, Character, Competence
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-07-31
The advice in this book extends beyond the professional world and echoes in everyday life. This makes sense; we don't live double-lives, and there exists no magic, secret formula for success in business, medicine, or raising kids. It comes down to basic human virtues.

Commitment. Character. Competence. These attributes fuel the engines of success in life.

It boggles the mind how many books or programs offer axiomatic platitudes such as "it's not what you know but who you know" or "success is what makes you happy, so be true to yourself."

None such wasteful advice finds its way into this book. Rather, Dr. Irwin points out the objective, observable standards that exist in life, and our need to continually evaluate ourselves and measure our choices against those standards.

As the book says; it's simple, but it isn't easy. I highly recommend this book.

As an aspiring screenwriter, Mr. Hauge's title offered me a "guaranteed way" to get my screenplay read. Needless to say, this title sold me immediately. I finished reading it in one evening, and highlighter in hand, I went back and reread it again. It now closely resembles one of my college textbooks. I can't wait to implement Mr. Hauge's tips and suggestions as I enter the world of pitch fests, contests, and (hopefully) pitch meetings. When that time comes, I know I'll be well prepared and ready-to-go.

Don't Even Think About Pitching Without Reading This Book!

Don't even think about pitching your script without reading this book!

Michael Hauge has been to more pitch fests and conferences than just about any screenwriting teacher/consultant out there -- and he knows exactly what it takes to break through that glazed look in the Producer's eyes and make them take notice of your story.

As a professional screenwriter, I, too, have been to a lot of pitches (And as a professional script consultant, I've heard even more). And I thought I had my formula down. But I found Michael's specific techniques in this book to be really insightful and inspiring -- and I've already changed my approach because of it!

In his honest, witty, and authoritative style, Michael walks you through every step of the process, from clarifying your story's major turning points, knowing what to put in (and more importantly what to leave out) of the pitch, to how to create an instant connection with the one you're pitching to...and leave them wanting more.

Before you pitch your next story, whether over the phone or in person, read this book -- twice -- and let it guide you to creating the pitch-perfect plan for pitching your next script.

In the meantime, Stay Inspired -- and Keep Writing!

I attended 2 of Michael's seminars at Screenwriting Expo '06 and this book contains the same "special" quality of Michael's in-person class: He wants you to succeed. The book is an Instruction Manual for understanding, crafting and marketing your story. The material is digestible for beginners, valuable for all levels of writing, simple and thorough. There is a nice balance of "Do" and "Don't" advice. The "Executives on Pitching" Section provides confirmation and flavor to the meaty material that precedes it. This book is not simply a compilation of quotes and buzzwords. Michael has command of his craft and endeavors with the heart of a mentor to infuse it in his readers. 2 thumbs up :)

I picked up Larry's Book, "Show me the way to go home", quite by chanceat a local book store. I was interested in Alzheimer's disease because my mother died from it a few years ago. I could not put the book down until I had read the last page. I read it again the next day and then again and again. Then I sat down and cried for a week. I found that I had fallen in Love with this handsome, dashing, man. If you have a friend or relative that is afflicted with this disease, you must read Larry's Book. He has achieved the impossible. He has given us an insight into the mind of person afflicted with this terrible disease. After reading his book and looking at his picture on the back cover, I feel that I know him well enough to call him Larry. Thank You, Larry, for your book and God Bless!Kathleen

This is a fascinating story actually written by an Alzheimer's patient in the early stages of the disease. Larry was diagnosed at age 54. This came after his getting lost on a trip, driving more than a hundred miles out of the way of the route to his destination before realizing it. Larry tries to see the good in this, writing that he has "more compassion for people, birds, deer, and the like" and he says "If when you read this book you feel a certain sadness...let yourself be sad, but not for me...I have had a good and prosperous life...Most of all, I have had the love of some beautiful people...and I have loved them, too."

My mother was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's Disease at fifty years. I found Larry Rose's account of what was happening to be a wonderful way to relate to her in a way that she was unable to describe to me. This book will be a "hard to put down" account of daily life for those facing similar experiences along the way through this dibilitating illness that robs so much. Larry finds a positive light to shine on purpose in life and to keep on living. He is truly a courageous story that should not be missed. A big five star read with a human approach.

I bought this book shortly after my husband had been diagnosed with Alzheimers. At that time he was 54 - the same age as Larry Rose. I found the book to be helpful & giving us both a positive outlook after being told of this dreadful diagnosis. Larry Rose allowed us to see into his life, showing us so many things that we could recognise from dealing with our own day to day problems, and always writing with a sense of humour & dignity. This book has now been passed on to my family, enabling them to better understand my husbands emotions & feelings. It will be highly recommended to the people in my support group.

Rose poignantly describes his painful experiences of living midlife with Alzheimer's disease. He recalls the early warning signs and symptoms; the process of medical diagnosis and treatment; telling friends and family; coping with the confusion, fear and anger; and family involvement in decisions of property, caregiving and support. Personal quality of life issues are addressed as the author's awareness of the beauty in the ordinariness of life is increased through this experience. A highly individual, personal experience with universal appeal. Recommended for general public library collections.

I have wanted the kind of intimacy Mrs. Some describes in her inspired little book, my whole life. It is my earnest hope and prayer that the western world will learn from the West African culture, and find the true happiness we have declared the right to pursue.

I couldn't possibly recommend the book more highly.

This is a wonderful book that offers many little gems that encourage and facilitate the willingness to be open to intimacy in relationship. I think for many people who have struggled in relationship the author offers very useful, practical and enriching ways to let ones' relationship grow and develop. I love that the book is from an African perspective and though it's not geared only to Africans shows that African people have a workable approach to relationships that is spritually centered and life affirming.
I especially liked the authors' discussion on the use of rituals in African culture. The author made them come alive for me and helped me recognize that ritual is something we do anyway though we do not call it that and why. Her discussion on it's value and power in African culture was very empowering because she shows how we can open ourselves up on many levels to healing ourselves and our relationships by consciously utilizing rituals in our lives.
I also liked the author's emphasis on the importance of community, in helping build intimacy and supporting healthy relationships which is especially important for African people.
I would have liked more information on how some of the rituals or concepts used in ancient ways could better translated or modified for the present time.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who would like a spiritual, african centered approach to building healthy relationships.

Poetic translation of classic text--but little commentary

Review Date: 2006-09-08
A poetic translation of Shantideva's classic medieval text on Bodhisattvahood with a basic, gradualist, traditional introduction & notes by translator Wulstan Fletcher & 3 appendices by Khenchen Kunzang Palden (a short hagiography of Shantideva + comments on two Ch. 8 topics: equalizing & exchanging self for others). These are my favorite parts: tonglen + empathy-building role reversal (i.e. role play), assuming another's perspective (~Silva Mind Control). Unfortunately, no other commentary is provided despite p. 206 note 101: "As it stands, the 9th chapter is scarcely comprehensible to the unassisted reader, & an extensive commentary is indispensable." Pema Chodron uses this book as her source text but skipped Ch. 9 in her "No Time to Lose"--an otherwise elucidating, Western-oriented, book; Kelsang Gyatso's fine "Meaningful to Behold" covers all chapters. The text is entirely Mahayana; p. 179: "There is no hint of Tantric teaching," & (excepting Ch. 9) aimed at relative vs. absolute Bodhichitta.

Fletcher intelligently follows the text's spirit in poetic form, but overlooks Shantideva's poetic license & psychology--e.g. p. 6: "not only does Shantideva accept the reality of the lower realms..." but Shantideva states: p. 63, 5.7-5.8--"The hellish whips to torture living beings--who has made them & to what intent? Who has forged this burning iron ground. Whence have all their demon women sprung? All are but the offspring of the sinful mind." Fletcher uses common translations but they're misleading in English--per Pema's book, p. 161: "The Dalai Lama recommends using the word hatred instead of anger. There are times, he says, when anger is appropriate, but hatred is never justified. Anger can be motivated by compassion, but hatred is always accompanied by ill will." Per Shantideva: p. 88, 6.71--"we should at once cast far away our minds' attachments: tinder for the fiery flames of hate."

An early medieval text, it is pre-scientific, reasoning with ancient Indian models (i.e. analogies): e.g. ear vs. eye consciousness & p. 145, 9.61: "In the absence of a thing to know, it is clear that consciousness will not arise"--sensory deprivation experiments indicate otherwise; p. 150, 9.95: "How could anyone accept that what is partless could be said to meet?"--electron/positron pairs annihilate into energy. Ch. 9's Madhyamika Philosophy relies on a binary model (rare in Normally Distributed reality); many of its arguments are 2-edged swords. Rationalism/Philosophy lacks self-regulation--often scientifically invalid (i.e. doesn't prove its thesis); Shantideva lacked empirical tools (e.g. set theory & social network analysis). Form can be understood as pattern such as 1's & 0's in computer files. But he may be using koans to break through mental obstructions via extreme means--not to be taken literally. Some verses are gems: p. 75, 5.90--"Those suited to the teachings vast & deep, should not be introduced to lesser paths," a great contribution to mid-level Mahayana/Vajrayana seekers.

This is the best translation yet of one of the basic and most profound Buddhist texts. It can be read and re-read endlessly with new treasures uncovered each time.

The Padmakara translation group can be relied upon consistently to produce work of the highest standard. As the Buddhist traditions grow deeper roots in the Western world there are more scholar/practitioners capable of presenting their tradition with both scholarly rigour and the understanding that can only be gained through experience. This dual capacity is evident in Padmakara's translations of classic texts.
This present translation examplifies such excellent work. I already own a copy of Stephen Batchelor's translation of this text: "Guide to Bodhisattva's Way of Life," but am happy to have also purchased this excellent translation. As a Buddhist bibiliophile I am of the opinion that studying more than one good translation of such central texts as this aids one's understanding.
This work of Shantideva's is very highly regarded in Tibetan Buddhist traditions as offering a thorough grounding in the principles of the Mahayana. The simplest possible presentation of the content of this book would be to say that its twin foci are wisdom and compassion: the wisdom that cognises emptiness and the compassion that embraces all living beings without exception. The whole topic is unfolded through nearly a thousand four-line verses.
Thanks to the people of Padmakara for "The Words of my Perfect Teacher" as well, it has to be one of my favourite books.
Good reading, Richard Wrigley.

This book is wonderful, and this edition is very good. It is translated very well, in flowing verse. It has been a wonderful asset to my practice - not only elucidating ideas I have struggled with, but providing inspiration to keep practicing.

I highly reccommend this book as a cornerstone to Buddhist practice.

This is a great introduction into the practice of Mahayana Buddhism! Sometimes the translation seems to get in the way of the message, but this is not the case in this instance. If you want to make the world a better place, buy a copy of this book for yourself and one for a friend. I read the book through in its entirety when I first recieved it, and lately have been going back to it, opening pages at random and reading sections that stand out to me. It's almost as if relevant verses leap out of the page.

Dr. Bernstein has captured the essential elements not only to rebuilding and strengthening a fractured relationship, but really to live a happier life. All it takes is an open mind, and a little dedication to the process, and by reading and practicing the simple tips outlined, you can truly transform the quality of your life. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anybody who would like to improve their relationship with their spouse/partner. What you gain from reading this book is not just a profound improvement in your primary relationship, but a way to create happier, balanced relationships with other people in your life as well. These are practical, real tips that can be applied to everyday situations (I've even improved the quality of my worklife by discovering how negative I was, and how my toxic thoughts were impairing so many areas outside of my relationship issues).

This was such a well written and easy to read book. So often, relationship guidance is written in a style which seems to be meant for fellow therapists. This book used humor and everyday language and situations to efficiently get the points across. There is enough repetition of the advice, but not too much. I will end up reading it again and recommending it to my friends.

This excellent book, written by family therapist Dr. Jeffrey Bernstein, is practical, easy-to-follow, and a quick read. Although it is not an instant panacea for relationship ills it did make me recognize my own (negative) contributions to my relationship with my husband and, later, with other, less integral people in my life. Be open-minded, willing to learn, and spend the time and thought to do the exercises honestly. I read this book prior to choosing Dr. Jeff as a therapist and cannot speak highly enough about him. (Yes, I am fortunate enough to live in the same area as his practice!)

Wonderful Ways to Love a Child
I wish I had this book when my children were growing up. I bought this for my daughter when she had her first daughter. It is a great reference manual with good suggestions for any parent on ways to guide your child as he or she grows up to be a well-balance, loving, child, - adult, and at the same time develop a close relationship with them.

Many years ago when my children were in pre-school I bought your book.
When the kids were toddlers and I was tired and feeling swamped and

cranky, it helped remind me what was important and what was not. My
kids are in 8th, 6th and 4th grade now and life is busy and fun. I
pulled your book off of the shelf to find a quote for a friend and found
myself re-reading many of the stories. Your book centers me and sort of
re-sets my attitude toward parenting. Your stories are concise and
insightful; I appreciate your sense of family and fun. Just wanted to
say thanks for the times when your book has helped me.

Ms Ford. will stress the same point over and over again from very different angles. If you want your raise your kid as a responsible, caring, inquiring, loving and lovable adult, you shall not use fear, cohersion and guilt as the tools of your education. Chances are that you will fail in a big way.

Rembember that children are independt beings who need your support and guidance, not your control. Be open to what they came to teach you and both will benefit in ways which no words can precisely define, since they will take you to the world of the spirit.

The author makes sure that every parent who reads this book mustr a clear understanding that feeling love is not enough you MUST express it.

Better than all my huge parenting books!

I wish I had read this 'gift' book before I spent so much money on all the other parenting books that I have bought. These little stories/anecdotes/lessons are very helpful reminders in aiding me to be a mindful, caring parent in this world full of distractions. I have just purchased this for all my mommy friends as a Mother's Day gift. I plan to keep this on my bedside table to read a new chapter everynight to remind me to provide loving, attentive companionship to my daughter. The stories are short and well written - even my husband with his very short attention span finds them wonderful.
