First of all, I can't believe this book is out of print. Second of all, I'm stunned that this author isn't a household name. I rarely write reviews, but I can't really say that any more b/c this is the second review I've written for this author in as many weeks. I found the authors latest book, The Story of You (wonderful!!!) and a previous book of his, Reinventing Yourself (just as wonderful!!!) to be absolutely phenomenal stuff. Brand new ideas, at least I've never heard anyone talk about these subjects in the way he does - and I read tons of these types of books. This stuff is absolute gold. I bought this book from a 3rd party as a used book and encourage you to do the same. The dust jacket is awful looking, I ditched that right away. It looked very 70's and very cheesy, which is strange b/c this book was published in 2000. Weird. Many people do judge books by their covers (even though we're not supposed to (ha ha), I have a background in graphic design and am a total snob about these things :) But I'm not even halfway through this book and I'm *loving* what I'm reading and feeling compelled to write a reveiw. What a find! Now I want to order a copy for a friend of mine so I'll again order one from a third party on Amazon. It's crazy that this book is out of print! In case the author reads this review; I would have ordered the audio cd's as well, but they are abridged. My question is why? This isn't a very long book, why not record every wonderful word?

It has helped me

A couple years ago the author of this book (who didn't know me, nor I him) sent me a free copy. I have no idea why...

...but I am thankful now that he did. It sat on my shelf for about two years. But I eventually picked it up with the desire to become more "relationship oriented."

The chapters are nice and short -- they can be ingested in about twenty minutes. That's very convenient for me. He also does a fine job making profound relationship-truths simple to understand.

This books has been a great help to me.

Like a little seed that Steve planted in my life, it is now shooting up and bringing forth good fruit.

Thanks for the book, Steve!

I thought I was ordering the book and ended up with the CD's instead. Good mistake, it gave me something to listen to during my hour commute to work each morning. It's clear that we create the life & relationships we want. Coercing and manipulating people to do what you want them to do and be what you want them to be doesn't work. It's difficult enough trying to change the things that irritate me about myself, wonder why I ever thought it was a good idea to try to change other people?

Funny, smart, erudite, Steve Chandler affirms that our biggest and most powerful erogenous zone is our brain. Chandler deflates the myth that love just happens---true love, whether of a friend or a spouse or a pet, is cultivated and created, over and over again. Great stuff.

It's not just for the 28-year-old still living in the basement! Anyone going to college should read this, even if half of it won't apply for a couple years. By the time you move out of campus housing, you'll have used every chapter. I particularly like the sections on roommates and laundry! My son won't be in college for two years, but in June 2010, he'll get his copy!

Love this book. It's written in such a way that even if your kid won't believe you, they'll believe this. Witty, engaging and covers everything to do with moving out. Young adults will appreciate it and parents will feel better knowing that their "babies" have this information.

Great Lists! Great Info!

Children moving out forget just how many little things are sitting around their parents homes, like rubberbands and tape, that they never have to think about. It's all just "there".

This is a great book of lists and ideas for both movers and parents of movers to use to stock up on large and small items that will make life just so much easier on your own! There are even tips on how to interview a house-mate, and a little cooking, and remembering to ask the landlord where the laundry facilities are when you're looking at a new place.

It's a quick read, and a quick eye-opener, and a cute gift.

You'll laugh...you'll cry and it will scare you to death!

Not only is this a must-have book for any child contemplating the big move, but every adult who has made it to the stage of having a child who is ready to leave should read it. You will pat yourself on the back and wonder how you survived.

I laughed as Salditt reminds us of the importance of toilet paper and how NOT having toilet paper is a very bad thing! I'm not sure if I cried because of memories of some horrible roommates, or at the thought of my "baby" out on his own.

The illustrations are charming and this little gem of a book is filled with terrific checklists for you and the young adult that is making the big move.

I can't wait to see what Salditt tackles next.

This book is alot of fun. It is filled with practical advice such as: "Get a calendar to remind you what day it is, when rent is due, and when it's Mom's or Dad's birthday." If only I had this book when I moved out of my parent's house. The chapter about "Avoid the roommate from hell" would have been very useful. The illustrations are hillarious and they have an excellent website.

Kuddos to Ms Solomon for helping break us out of this religious tyranny. A much needed resource guide
to other approaches to alcoholism and addiction. My impression is that AA is just about the best recovery
program the 12th century has to offer. It is time to get into reality based programs with some scientific
basis as opposed to this faith based psycho-christian nonsense.

AA Not the Only Way is a resource for those seeking addiction counselling. Everyone has heard of AA but this type of program quite simply does not work for everyone. The author has personal experience in this situation. She tried AA and like many people when she kept relapsing she blamed herself for somehow failing the program. This pattern changed when the author found a program that suited her needs and specific issues.

Since AA does not suit everyone's needs and because most people don't realize that they have other options, the author has compiled information on alternate programs. Some programs require total abstinence and others look to teach moderation. There are also programs specifically tailored for women or specifically for men. The overlying philosophy, background, and contact information is included for each of these programs. Lists of licensed professionals, treatment centers, and other useful resources are also included.

Reviewed by Louise Landeta for Reader Views (2/07)

The author's main point is that there are many other programs and approaches to dealing with addictive behaviors besides Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and its twelve steps; yet the alternatives, while perhaps known within the recovery community, are not widely made known or available. She contends that AA is not as effective as most people think--her statistics are quite dismal, and some of the other programs have much more success. Mainly, Ms. Solomon wants to drive home the fact that while AA might be good for some people, and she has nothing against it, there are numerous other approaches that are effective as well. People are diverse and need diverse approaches to fit their individual needs.

Ms. Solomon shares the pitfalls of her own journey with addictive substances and her attempts to find help and support through AA to no avail, even though her own father was quite successful with the program. Her inability to recover through AA was a source of great sadness for her until she came to realize that lots of other people fail to recover through it as well. It was only through her own unrelenting search for alternatives that she found other programs and eventually something that worked for her.

The author is a good writer--her verbiage and syntax are on par, she provides data to back up her contentions, the content is well-organized and she cites her sources.

The basic theme in her thesis is that not everyone accepts the concept of a higher power and the basic assumption that they are helpless in the face of addiction. I believe this is a valid point. My only suggestion is that she seems to soft pedal this. I would be more comfortable if she would come right out with it--don't skirt around it. Be right up front with it.

I was interested in reviewing "AA Not the Only Way" because my work as a chaplain brings me into contact with various types of addicts. It will remain in my library as a useful future resource. I give it an A for all of the reasons cited above.

Puja Thomson writes with depth and authority about one of the most terrifying experiences a woman can face. She draws from her own bout with cancer and her history as a healthcare provider, to create an indispensible guide to understanding all aspects of this disease including traditional and non-traditional treatments, insights into patient's rights, and information on what to expect and what to demand from others involved in the healing process. Had "After Shock: From Cancer Diagnosis to Healing" been written several years ago, two of my own family members might be alive today to be praising this book as I am.

What makes this book so incredibly unique is that it is not only a wealth of vital information, which would be valuable on its own. Puja Thomson looks beyond the medical into the personal chasm created when a diagnosis of cancer occurs. Sometimes the hole in our wellbeing is pre-existing, and so cancer healing needs to happen at the soul level as well as the cellular level. Readers experienced in holistic living practices will find as much to anchor them in this process as those who are only just learning about the mind-body connection to health and wellness. Thomson empowers readers to create their own wellness program by incorporating relaxation and meditation techniques, creating a meaningful atmosphere, finding certain imagery to stimulate healing and powerful moods, and, perhaps most importantly, by cultivating a deep soul connection to health, mindfulness, and spirituality.

"Puja's book was a great help to a friend of mine who was diagnosed at age 21 with inoperable lung cancer. Her words are wise, and full of wisdom from personal experience with the material covered. Clear, logical reasoning, respect, dignity and compassion run throughout the book.
Puja offers a advice and instructions on how to handle visits and treatments, including questions that should be asked, and information that should be known. Her insight is vast, and her wonderful suggestions can quickly relieve any panic and confusion that occur following such a traumatic diagnosis.
Puja also provides alternative choices to the accepted allopathic offerings, and these too are clearly and concisely discussed.
My mother had passed away 23 years ago, and I wish we had had this resource at that time. No matter what the outcome, Puja's book and the wisdom shared in it will make whatever the timing and path chosen much easier, more productive, and worth living.-Raymundo Rodriguez-Jackson, New Paltz, NY."

I am a Licensed Massage Therapist and I read Puja's book so that I could become a better resource for my clients who are dealing with cancer, either of their own illness or that of a family member or friend. What I found was a wonderful resource for Cancer patients as well as anyone else who may be struggling with an illness. While the personal accounts in the book center around Cancer specifically, the advice within it's pages is practical for anyone who needs to know how to organize themselves regarding their own issue - from how to get the personal and professional support you want and need to how to organize your bills and other paperwork. By simply having the book in my office, it opens a door for my clients to talk about themselves and often to begin the healing process. Congratulations to Puja for creating this valuable resource, with love and light.

Few marketing books has the enjoyable read character. it is safe to say that Big Brands...Big trouble leads the pack. Concise yet informative, the book focus on the notion that marketing is about winning your customers' minds and hearts.

By going through ample examples of famous brands, Mr. Trout dispel some of the conventinoal strategies most companies blindly undertake. Line extention according to him, has done nothing but damage to At&T and Miller Brewing. The giant P&G has lost big on the toothpaste line becasue they forgot what made their brand a hit. Fashionable outlets such as Levi' and M&S needs to rise out from the past and look more into the future by developing their own unique "brand lifestyle".

On the dark side, the book is relatively redundant and by the end of it, it looses out. Also, the recurring negative remarks on another business guru "Michel Porter" was needless and hence lost the book the full the mark.

¡§Big Brands Big trouble¡¨ is a very interesting and comprehensive book. This book have a clear organization which comprise several types of popular mistakes with different big brand cases, how to select a board of directors and how to be a good CEO. I think this book is suitable for anyone who is interested in Marketing or Branding because you could gain a lot of insight from it. After reading this book, you will understand why some brands cannot be established well even they have spent a lot money on advertising, introducing many new products.

This book impress me the most is that Jack Trout illustrated all mistakes clearly by showing how the big brands, like Levis, Burger King, AT&T and Marks and Spencer made in the past. Then you may discover that some of the existing well-known brands are actually making mistakes for their marketing strategies. Moreover, you may get surprise that some of the popular marketing strategies, like line extension, benchmarking cannot promote your product, conversely, they will hurt your company seriously. So you must read this book if you want to surpass your competitors by using appropriate marketing strategies for your company.

Overall speaking, this book is easy to read and understand because Jack Trout delivered a concise and important message in the book ¡V ¡§Marketing is a battle of perception, not product¡¨

This lovely book by Patricia Alexander and Michael Burgos gives the reader exactly what the title promises, comfort for your spirit, body and soul. The stories and vignettes seem so real that they bring you to a special place where readers can just be, and get in touch with their inner spirit and desires. I have taken the Book of Comforts with me to doctor's appointments where I know I will have to sit and wait. Reading the lovely prose and gentle messages makes the time pass quickly and pleasurably. I have even had others ask me about the book and then copy down the title so they can find their own "Comfort". I originally purchased Chestas Way because my daughter is a teen in 4-H. As a mother of teens myself I can identify with the teenage angst and the way this book is written you just get right into it. I figured my daughter would appreciate this book not only because she raises animals for her 4-H project but because of the ages of the girls in the story. She is still reading it (I have finished),my daughter has read books in the past that spring to mind when reading Chestas Way.It has a "Sarah Plain and Tall" quality to it and though it is set in a different time the values remind me of "The Little House" series of books.I believe if Michael Landon were alive today he would be able to do justice to this wonderful story in the form of a mini-series. I hope Disney gets wind of it and makes a movie out of it,I think teens need all the good role models they can get and this book was so good it just left you hoping for a sequel (hint, hint). Please consider writing another book to give us fans of Chestas Way an update.God Bless you Mary Jacobson, and thank you again for a beautifully written story that tugged at these heartstrings.I would highly recommend this book to anyone with teens, anyone who loves animals or anyone who works with teens. Chesta can teach a lot and it really helps you to understand and have compassion for troubled teens. There is a wealth of knowledge in this book.

I sat down to skim Chesta's Way one night, being too tired to really read it. Well, much later, wiping tears from my eyes I was thankful I'd taken the time while my family slept and the phone didn't ring to complete the book. As a Registered Nurse who has often dealt with obnoxious teen patients I was enchanted with Chesta's determination and her approach. It made me reflect on my own sense of compassion ( or occasional lack thereof!). Thanks, Ms. Jacobson.

Chesta's Way is an inspiring and heartwarming true story that captured me from the beginning. Through smiles, tears and intense moments, this is an uplifting account of how one woman's compassion and perserverance helped fill the void in troubled city kids hearts. This book is a "must read" for anyone concerned about kids today, anyone who is called in their "own way" to make a difference in the lives of others, and for animal lovers everywhere who know and cherish the gifts animals bring to us through their need, companionship and love. City Kids and Calves...what a wonderful combination! Chesta's Way is beautifully written and it's story rekindles one's faith in the human spirit. It is the kind of book you will want to share with others. The perfect gift. I have given this book as gifts to others with the greatest of joy. Thank you, Mary, for sharing this story.

I believe the author has done a great job sharing the love of God as was shown in the Bible and in the way Jesus lived. The Christianity many live today, as Doug points out, is more like the Pharisees practiced. The view of Christianity Doug displays, may be, in my mind, an expanded view of Universal Christianity and Universal reconciliation. Worth reading.

I became an instant fan of Tony Jones with his latest "The New Christians" so I was ready for another fun ride in the second of the Jossey-Bass "Living Way" Series: Pagitt's "A Christianity Worth Believing";

Imagine my disappointment then when I discover:

1) Pagitt plays very fast and loose with his interpretation of history (he wants to set right 1800 years of Greek (i.e., "bad") theology) that has lead the Christian church astray from the original Hebrew intent,

2) He utilizes a very limited reading and selective use of biblical citation to make his points--(e.g., atonement really wasn't in the cards for Jesus-as-lamb; that was just a cultural imprisonment of the metaphor attributed to the angry Greek gods--never mind John's Gospel and Paul's gospel affirming that metaphor (of course, Pagitt would claim that is my aberrant reading of the original)),

3) Proof-reading missed so many typo's that I suspected there was a rush to get this book to print (Not Pagitt's fault, I know) I can understand maybe 2-3 misprints in a big-name publication, more for a smaller budget press)--third sentence in the very first chapter: "But I have problem...."; a minor point to some perhaps, but quality thinking from a quality press deserves quality print; I noted 6-8 of these that only made it harder to take this book seriously

Finally, 4) the "straw men" set up, the theological perspectives that Pagitt sees hampering the Christianity-worth-believing, which reflects Jesus the Messiah, which he seeks to knock down, are so simplistic I hardly recognized them as faith perspectives worth worrying about.

Perhaps Minnesota is a hotbed of churches and people who still think the four spiritual laws is the gospel, but there were so many instances of Pagitt describing "what's wrong" in ways that I thought, "of course that clouds the gospel, but I've not met anyone like that since I was a teenager in the '70s"

Pagitt glosses over an attempt to discern strands of theological value from long-standing traditions like the Orthodox church; he never touches on other contexts such as Coptic view of the spirit, Moravians and worship, Anabaptist view of community, or even Methodists and grace; each with their variant metaphors and cultural contexts--he just keeps harping on "Greek" thinking as reflected in "Augustine, Aristotle and Calvin" and rails against antiquated 14th and 15th century "confessions". Those targets are too easy.

There is much I find unbelievable throughout the history of the church, statements of belief, declarations on the supposed nature of discipleship; however, I think Doug throws the proverbial baby out with the bathwater and, though emergent is about conversation, from his perspective of Christian Theology, there is much that he has taken off the table and cannot be discussed.

Anyway, I found reading this book actually diminished my affection for the emergent/emerging church movement.

Pagitt came across like a teenager complaining about things he's already biased against; similarly, perhaps due to his youth, he has not had the worldly experience that exposes his whole being to the nuances and harmonies in Christianity or in the rest of the world.

For example, I've known about sub-atomic particle physics for 20 years and how these energies have a "preference" in behavior, rather than following hard rules; also, holistic medicine is a long-standing, authoritative resource to my 49-year-old thinking. So what's the big deal with taking a holistic view of life, the body, creation, etc AND talking about the lordship of Jesus, spiritual disciplines and even, careful now, the Trinity?

I think Pagitt's "issues" stem more from a dislike for traditional metaphors than for the theological concepts behind them--Pagitt goes to great lengths to get away from the "distance" language of God-across-the-chasm and seeks to engage a language of "re-integrating relationships". That's fine with me, if it's a both/and, not an either/or proposition for the metaphors--not everyone feels "dis-integrated" in a stressed relationship, sometimes my wife and I just feel "far away" from each other, but we are still married; lighten up, Doug!

This isn't to say there are some brilliant, inspirational passage on some important themes--I just don't think the book warrants a lot of praise; for a book touting the holistic view and critiquing the supposedly too-intellectual "Greek" view, I think the tenor of this book swings too far into an emotional view, rather than healing the rift.

In the end, contrary to the expansive and proactive spirit I felt while reading Tony Jones' The New Christians: Dispatches from the Emergent Frontier, I found "A Christianity Worth Believing", well, unbelievable.

So, I recommend you borrow Pagitt's book or buy it used and see what you think of it. If my review is off the mark for you, then no harm done.

If you find similar concerns, well, I've saved you some cash to put toward other thoughtful books, such as:

For anyone who has been waiting for "those emergent types" to state what they believe, wait no more. This is Doug Pagitt at his best--funny, thought-provoking, goofy, challenging, and asking questions you didn't know could be asked.

Compelling, Beautiful and Hope-Filled...Christianity?

Welcome to a Christianity still forming, a faith that is compelling and beautiful and filled with hope, a God who is not remote and difficult to appease but one who is "down and in," present and active in a our lives and world. Welcome to A Christianity Worth Believing, described by author Doug Pagitt in his subtitle as a "hope-filled, open-armed, alive-and-well faith for the left out, left behind and let down in us all." The reader won't find any gaseous, empty platitudes in this memoir of his living faith in Jesus, however; it's instead a brisk walk through his story of seeking, finding, questioning, challenging, and refining what it means to follow Jesus in the world.

Like Doug and so many others who encountered Evangelical Christianity as a teenager, I found myself eventually struggling to follow the Jesus I fell in love with through all the hoops, twists, turns and cultural baggage that are embedded in our gospel presentations with so much fervency and certainty. Unlike Doug, I chose the path of least resistance and simply bought in and went with the program-as-offered. Reading A Christianity Worth Believing did, in a way, bring me full-circle in my own journey of spiritual reformation. With vulnerability, passion, and tremendous insight, Doug Pagitt has testified to a Christianity that is truly worth believing in.

This book transposes the reader to another time. Easy reading yet rich and moving. Taste the honey, sense the harlot and hear the message of hope. A stangely delightful combination. You will think about it long after you turn the last page. I will give it as a gift to the men in my family, but the ladies will want to read it too!

This book delivers more than promised. I love the suggestions and to prove it I have purchased and given away 10 copies. I ask for MBOs for everything I do and it works every time. It's not just for getting good parking spaces, use it on any situation that might be difficult or when you want to be sure a situation will be resolved in your favor. Of course, you need to be open to the outcome, the angels don't always see things the way you do and your request may turn out a little different than you expected. Upon reflection, you realize that the outcome really is the best that could have happened.

A valuable read for anyone interested in Angels

I purchased this book after receiving the author's weekly newsletter for a few weeks. I found "The Gentle Way" to be a worthwhile resource since it gave me greater insight into Angels in general, and particularly into how best to communicate with my own "Guardian Angel." If you are interested in Angels as a topic, I think you'll find this book to be a valuable resource.

If you are very metaphysically oriented person, you may also want to visit the author's web site (http://www.thegentlewaybook.com/) and sign up for the newsletters I referenced above.

I found this book to be tremendously helpful. The author's suggestions really work with profound results. It is an enjoyable uplifting read and one to definitely follow through with the author's suggestions. Anyone who does will not be disappointed. It helps one realize there are celestial helpers out there...one just needs to know how to ask for their assist. Tom T. Moore educates us on this through this book.

I just LOVE this book! Reading it brought (and still brings) such reassurance and an ease of being in the world. It's truly life changing, and an easy, gentle read -- and so profound in it's simplicity. "The Gentle Way" brings you into close, loving contact with your Guardian Angel. I began requesting Most Benevolent Outcomes for little things and bigger things, and the results still amaze me! It just works. "The Gentle Way" reminds us that help is always available to us. We just have to ASK.

I was honored to have Tom as a guest on my Pathfinders Way radio show. He was simply wonderful and shared so much insight and information during the hour. You can listen to the archived show and hear him speak about "The Gentle Way" by going to www.achieveradio.com/pathfinders-way/

Thank you Tom!

I attended a workshop in Sedona that Thomas was attending, and he was called up to give a brief explanation of this book and what it was about. I found him to be very kind and sincere, and I purchased the book. I did an experiment where I told myself, "I am going to try requesting most benevolent outcomes for a few months while recording my results. Then, if it really does work, I am going to share it with others." I didn't have any expectations for it to work or not work. I just tried it.
Oh, my word!! I could not believe the results!! Every potentially dischordant event on which I tried this method was absolutely transformed into an overwhelmingly positive event! Everything from events leading to the perfect job change, to meeting just the right people at the right time, to having negotiations that I thought were sure to go sour turn out fabulously, to allowing difficult conversations to work out "benevolently" have occured while using this method. It's so easy, and I'm so grateful for it, and for the assistance I have been receiving from my "counterpart(s)." I am hereby requesting a most benevolent outcome for getting enough money to buy a mess of copies of this book and hand them out to anyone who seems to be having a tough or stressful time. I got to thinking what this could do for homeless people, soldiers, rescue workers, firefighters, EMTS, in addition to helping with everyday events.
Much gratitude for your work, Mr. Moore, and if you are out there wondering if you should get this, quit wondering and buy it. It will change your life. I guarantee it!
