This book has helped my Lightwave skills tremendously. I would give it 5 stars except for the DVD wasn't checked before shipping and contains a few corrupted files (new files can be downloaded from website) and I don't like all the poor illustrations. I know it lowers the cost of the book to do the illustrations in black/white but I would be willing to pay more for colored illustrations. Even though the DVD contains the digital illustrations it's a pain to boot up the PC whenever I want to see them. That being said this is the best book to learn Lightwave because it contains beginner, intermediate and advanced topics.

A book well worth the price

After reading Dan Ablan's "Inside Lightwave 8" - more or less THE standard in Lightwave - there were more questions raised than answered. Not that Ablans approach is a bad one, it's just that he picks up so many different aspects of the program along the thread of the book, that at times it can be confusing. This isn't the fact with "Essential Lightwave v9". Although the whole covering of every aspect from the absolute beginning seems a bit cumbersome, it's worth it at the end. This over 900 pages issue helps you get into nearly every detail of Lightwave and handle the program like some kind of 3D Photoshop.
Add the companion DVD with hours of live modeling and animating, plug-ins and illustration fotos and you surely got something to start your way into 3D via Lightwave.

We absolutely LOVE this book. I pulled my son out of Kindergarten to homeschool him because he was miserable with all of the worksheets and it made him hate writing! This book saved us. These games are fun and it doesn't really even feel like "work". Writing doesn't have to be boring. He has improved 100% and no longer complains about writing... It's even fun for me!

Great for Homeschooling

This is a wonderful book for the homeschooling environment. First, the author is a tutor for children struggling with public school methods, so she offers enjoyable, imaginative alternatives to the plug and chug kids get in school. Second, as a tutor, the author works with children primarily one-on-one. These games, therefore, lend themselves naturally to the experience of home schooling. Third, the author provides meaningful explanation of the kinds of writing and thinking skills each game addresses; in this sense, these games are more than games. Finally, many of these games can be tied in easily to whatever other content you may be covering at the moment. For example, I found a wonderful game in here that I plan on using when my son and I cover the artistic concept of "line". I also appreciate the chart in the back of the book that categorizes each game according to grade level.

On the whole, the author takes a "bottom up" approach to writing. Ditch the spelling tests and grammar grind for now, and teach kids to love writing by providing writing exercises that they'll love. She respects and celebrates the kidness of kids.

You can really get several years of use out of this book, even with no other writing book.

This book was outstanding! Not only did I have trouble putting the book down, but I learned so much. Jenna's writing style is magnificent. Because of the level of detail that she included in her beautifully-crafted sentences, I was able to totally be in the moment with her and truly experience the myriad of feelings and sensations. So even though I do not think I meet the criteria for being highly sensitive, I thoroughly get it and could relate to it. I am grateful that she shared her journey with us because I know it will be so helpful and validating to many. I have already recommended the book to quite a few of my own patients. I only wish the book continued so I could witness how she evolved past her teenage years...I hope she is writing Volume 2!

In this book Jenna Forrest gives us insight about her life and how growing up sensitive was for her.
Through this book I re-lived my childhood years; years of living in homes that I never thought to be mine, growing up as a kid from a broken home and divorced parents, living like a ping-pong ball from one house to the other.
This book is powerful because it confronts us with our past and makes us talk about those things and feelings we never talked about because in those times, we simply accepted our lives as they were, thinking that life was supposed to be that way.
Jenna in this book makes us go back into our past and unwind all of those moments of conflict within ourselves and empowers us to face them, discuss them and even cry what we never did. The result is a sense of forgiveness of compassion for that child we were and a great sense of responsibility for our family and our children.
If you still have unresolved issues in your life, this is a book that will help you understand the path that many of us have walked so far, and will help you understand that help is no longer "on its way", but help is here now.

A must read for parents and educators

Jenna Forrest takes the reader on her private journey into the life of a child lost in the mire of family dysfunction and the confusion that those of us who are sensitives can relate to and understand as we try to fit into the world around us; Jenna shares her innermost feelings from a child's perspective as she realizes even though living in a dysfunctional family, help and hope are delivered in the form of real human angels who do appear for support and empowerment! This book is a must for anyone who feels overwhelmed by visual, tactile, intuitive, and auditory stimuli that is unavoidable in our busy world.Jenna guides us through her reality into a world of awakening to the fact that sensitives and intuitive people are blessed with a gift which is understood by such a minority; Thank you Jenna for your inspirational memoir!

Jenna Forrest shares a profound gift with us by allowing readers of her memoirs to peer into her soul. Her poetic prose amplifies the experience to the degree that we can feel the vinyl on the chairs and hear the scratch in LPs she describes in her journey through childhood. Her words give voice to our child's mind with authentic eloquence, beauty, humor, sadness, fear, and hope.

If you are sensitive person, the parent of a child who is highly sensitive, or in relationship with a sensitive person, then you should read this book for its many, many insights and honest reflection. The reading is not always easy because a child's truth, so well expressed in this book, tells us all how much help the world and the people around us need.

It has also given me the tools to re-organize and refine my life with daily practices that make HAPPINESS a choice that is not that far fetched. Since reading the book things have definitely changed for me and are continuing to change on a DAILY BASIS!!!

I have to say that this book intrigued me right off the bat, I have been struggling for months with the emotional pain from losing my job and for some reason this book caught my attention. I must say it has given me a new lease on life and raised my outlook in trying to have a more positive attitude each and every day. I loved the fact that right from the beginning Burton started me off with some step by steps which made it easy for me to put all of my issues into perspective. I enjoyed feeding off of the tips and information in the book and I was easily able to implement fulfilling techniques into my personal life. I owe it to Chappale Linn Burton for giving me a new lease on life and helping me turn my sad emotions into happy ones.

Happiness; is it earned or is it created? I often wonder about this as life has been a rollercoaster for me and my family. I was never sure if I could choose to be happy or if I had to wait for it to come along in bits and pieces. Then I read this wonderful book and realized that I can make the choice!

Chapalle made me realize that no matter how tough life is we can be happy. His step-by-step method is easy to understand, seems fun to accomplish, and can be reitterated over and over again. I am anxious to work on the "30 ways in 30 days" idea and have almost talked my husband into trying these ideas as well.

Thanks for this great read! I recommend this book to everyone.

I LOVE THIS BOOK! I feel odd saying that because I'm not typically into feel good/motivational books because I "choose happiness" 90% of the time. However, the title of this book caught my attention, so I took a chance on it. I am SO glad that I took that chance.

This book is different from any book I've read before. Not only is the book fun to read, but it gives an action plan, with exercises, at the end. I finished it in less than one week and it usually takes me at least a month to finish books! I just couldn't put it down.

Not only does the author invite readers in to share very personal parts of his life, he explains, in a reader friendly fashion, what emotional state he was in and the decisions that he CHOSE to make. Covering issues such as dealing with the loss of loved ones, career choices and changes, money and financial struggles, love (the good and the bad), and success and failure, this book makes the average, everyday person know that they are not alone. You will find yourself laughing, then crying, then laughing again!

I now use the action steps given in the book and it has made me more appreciative of everything and everyone in my life. So I encourage every invest in your happiness. Choose this book... and choose happiness now!

This is one of the most inspiring books I've read. I've always been on to try to look at the lighter side of things, to see the positive in most situations, but after reading this book, I learned so much more than I can do to literally "choose happiness" in just about everything I do and am confronted with. There are so many methods for finding the positive that I couldn't find a good place to put my book mark and put the book down. I just keep reading it!

I love how well the book is written and how easily the content seemed to come to the author. This is one book that I will be passing around to my fellow book readers, as I'm sure anyone can benefit from what they'll learn.

I now don't have to ruin my eyes using bad copies and the book is in really good condition so that I am improving with every class and every homework assignment. A Management Book Even English Majors Will Love
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-07-20
Ordinarily, I'm not a big fan of the management genre. More aphorisms than pages is not a good combo.

Tim Warneka's *Leading People the Black Belt Way* takes its time to do the job right. Not surprising, perhaps, given how Aikido -- the martial art that provides this book's philosophical center -- rewards patience. Yes, the author provides schemas to help us remember key points, but he never races through them as if prepping Intro to Management students for an upcoming quiz. His goal for his readers is genuine understanding, not rote memorization of bullet points.

Tim's prose is extremely accessible. He talks of problems that managers and their teams actually face. When he introduces concepts from the management canon, he defines them in phrases that don't demand an MBA.

Each chapter begins with a brief "story" that illustrates the upcoming topic. Don't be surprised to find that you've stopped to reflect for a few minutes before you move on. It is the nature of stories to invite readers to contemplate meaning. Far better that you start to grasp these principles organically, rather than have the author bludgeon you over the head.

Tim brings a truly fresh perspective to the management text. I honestly believe that his mission is not simply to make managers get more from their workforce, but to actually improve the world. It's not just that happy workers are more productive workers, but that happy workers are happy. So are happy managers. What's refreshing is that he doesn't consider this naive. It's a worthy common cause.

Perhaps most indicative of Tim's take on both management and the world is his assessment of Ebeneezer Scrooge. We've heard this one so often we can recite it by heart: warm and fuzzy Bob Cratchit, good; cold and calculating Ebeneezer Scrooge, bad. What a refreshing take to see Warneka focus upon Scrooge's redemption. How the Scrooge at the *end* of The Christmas Carol literally embodies the managerial lessons that Tim tries to teach throughout *his* book. We should all be like Scrooge in the end: a good man and a good manager too.

Full disclosure: I have worked with Tim on a business project and know him to be the real deal. But so is his book. Stop enumerating habits and move your darned cheese -- *this* book can teach you a lot.

Leaders must tap into the tremendous emotional power of those they lead. Yes! In a field crowded with many good books on leadership, Tim Warneka has authored one that is fresh, unique and valuable. He dips his consultant and writer's ladle deeply into pools of both leadership and Aikido wisdom, with wonderful results. Having worked as an organizational change strategist and coach for two decades myself and having practiced the Japanese martial art of Aikido for over half that period, I can tell you that you're in for many surprises and bonuses in this book. By this I mean you will come away from your reading investment with many inspiring new ideas and lots of practical tools you can immediately put to work.

Leaders are sometimes hard to find. Sure, there's loads of folks that have been to leadership workshops and programs to be indoctrinated with yet another leadership system. But as Warneka points out, "The world does not need one more leadership system. What the world does need is great leadership that draws on the wisdom of the body and recognizes the treasury of emotions waiting to be tapped within every organization."

Using references to the lovely and efficient Japanese martial art of Aikido, Warneka shows us the importance of the above statement. In a text that flows much like a well trained martial artist, we receive epigrams from a well known swordsman, the Tao, today's best and brightest leadership coaches and the ever important thoughts of Ghandi and Einstein. Along with all that we get examples of Warneka's tried and try methods, his well thought out "learning experiments", helpful Author's notes and an extensive bibliography/webography. And while you'll have loads of folks you'll want to buy a copy for, this book could stay in your briefcase or backpack for months and in your library indefinitely.

I could list the 5 core problems that face leaders today, the 4 tools of conflict management or the 7 solutions of black belt leadership that Warneka expounds on and offers solutions to, or I could tell you this:

Whether you're the president of your garden club developing your next fundraiser, a teacher dealing with stubborn union issues, or a Fortune 500 CEO, this book can help.

Heck, it can be helpful in issues that arise every minute of every day in every country on this planet. Working together and living together is what we do as a species, using techniques that borrow from the philosophy of yin/yang, the Gestalt Cycle of Experience, and the teachings of Joseph Campbell, just may help us become those leaders we so desperately need.

Eastern Philosophy Meets Leadership

If you're looking for a goldmine of timeless leadership treasures, you'll want to add Leading People The Black Belt Way to your collection. This book is unique because Warneka weaves his vast knowledge of eastern philosophy through the basic principles of emotional intelligence. It's thought provoking and loaded with plenty gems of wisdom. He highlights key points with bolding, for easy reference later. Each chapter ends with a summary and a learning experiment to help you implement the key concepts.

The book's content is written around the framework of The Seven Solutions of Black Belt Leadership:
1. Know the Five Core Problems of Leadership
2. Understand Leadership as a Relational Process
3. Seek Harmony in Leadership
4. Lead People Rather than Pushing or Pulling Them
5. Cultivate Emotional Engagement
6. Practice Embodied Leadership
7. Follow The Black Belt Cycle of Leading People

Don't worry if you don't really understand the meaning from this list. Warneka thoroughly defines "what is meant" at the beginning of each chapter.

This book is a great investment because it's jam packed with hidden gems. It's so content rich that he could have easily broken it down to several smaller, simpler books. Warneka clearly put his heart and soul into this piece of work.

I'm an avid business book reader and I have to say that I found it to be on the difficult side to read. Each chapter is prefaced with an eastern philosophy based story, which I personally found a bit distracting. If you're going to read it cover to cover, consider taking it in bite-sized chunks to maximize the benefits. Read one chapter every 2 - 4 weeks, complete the experiments at the end, and give your self plenty of time to sift, sort, and learn from the material.

If you couldn't put down Daniel Goleman's books on emotional intelligence, you're likely to be thrilled with this book. On the other hand, if you found Goleman's books to be great reference material versus engaging and inspirational, you'll likely feel the same way about this one.

Regardless, it's a great addition to your business book library.

So begins Tim Warneka's excellent book on leadership. As a practitioner and teacher of aikido, I appreciate Tim's use of aikido as a metaphor and teaching tool. How can we acknowledge and make use of emotional energy? As leaders, we can no longer afford to ignore this question. In "Leading People the Black Belt Way," you will learn core problems facing today's leaders and how to engage and manage them. Through theory, parable, learning experiments, and real life examples, this book offers easily grasped, yet innovative concepts. Read, learn, and enjoy!

This is a well written book that is easy to read and easy to understand. It's the story of one youth's hope, determination, escape and survival during one of the world's darkest times, WW-II. Bob Golan seemed to be always just a step ahead of those who would do him harm. It was especially interesting to me since, as a young man, my father and I would listen to all the "war news" that came on the radio and the book brought back plenty of old memories of accounts of hardships, suffering, and atrocities endured by the Jewish people as reported by the commentators.

Once you have started to read this book it will hold your attention until you've finished.

I am a 12 yr old boy, who is an avid reader, especially of people who have done extraordinary things in their lives. I read this book by Mr Golan and was so inspired by him that he has become to me my very first and probably forever role model. I have never looked for "human" role models for various reasons, but Mr. Golan changed all that for me!! What a great man, what a life he has lead. I really never knew what it was like to never know what it was like to live by the notion to "NEVER GIVE UP'" and thanks to him I now know. If one day in my life I should ever have to face a life challenge and I should (G-d forbid) want to just give up I will remember Mr. Golan and all he went through to overcome. I will remember him and draw my strength from him and his life and hopefully I will stand tall and be as courageous as he was. Hopefully I will do as well as he did. Thank you Mr. Golan for your inspiration, may G-d continue to give you strength all the days of your life.

Dear Mr. Golan, I'm sending you this note of admiration and appreciation via Jo Braxton, a mutual friend. While I was visiting in Tulsa recently, she put her copy of your book in my hands, knowing my avid interest in history, and also being aware that some aspects of my family's background and history echo yours. I'm not Jewish, but that's wholly irrelevant. Every family and every individual who survived the horrors of World War II in Europe has a tale, at once similar and unique, to tell. My family comes from Bulgaria, and we were fortunate to get to the United States just a few months before Hitler invaded Poland. Among our family, predominantly, were physicians, lawyers, teachers, and clergy. Those the Germans didn't execute during the war were executed by the Communists who seized control of Bulgaria when the war ended. None have been heard from since. Both the Germans and the Communists had the same motives for eliminating local intelligentsia wherever they invaded and ravaged. I simply want to tell you how much I enjoyed reading your book. It is gripping, fascinating, and very well written. How you and others survived such a traumatizing ordeal is a wonder and a tribute to the unquenchable desire of human beings to be free and to live in dignity and respect toward each other. But, sadly, to judge by the history of the Middle East since 1945, and even more so by current events there, nobody seems to learn by mistakes. It seems to me that, some 2000 years later, we're just repeating the vain, fruitless political experiences of the ancient Romans in trying to impose our notion of order and stability in that perpetually troubled region, and with the same disastrous results. No foreign power can impose a military solution there to what remains an insoluble political, ethnic, religious, and cultural dilemma. I'm nobody in particular, just a retired professor of English, French, and German, an old horse out to pasture, and I'm not a professional book reviewer--but, I know a well-written and unforgettable tale when I read one. What an extraordinary odyssey life is for all of us! Thanks for writing your book. I think it crucially important that eyewitness testimony from all who endured and survived the horrors of World War II be recorded and preserved. Only if we keep that unspeakable tragedy in mind may we perhaps avoid further episodes of such bestial barbarism. Reading your book, I'm gratified that at least some are able to endure, survive, and triumph over such devastating experiences, but I'm also left wondering: Is there hope that the human race will ever grow up, become truly civilized, and accept its responsibility for the well-being of all creatures on earth, so we can get along cooperatively and harmoniously? I do wonder, and though I hope, part of me is skeptical, and I wish it were not. Best wishes, Mike Trapp(...)

Very few people have any idea of the horrors visited on the people of Poland, Jews as well as non-Jews in 1939. This one man had the wisdom to chronicle the events as they happened and helps relate the fears and uncertainty that his family faced during their journey into the seeming abyss of history. Fortunately for us he survived the journey and recorded the story not just for us but for all people who believe in the firm resolve of the individual.

A heart rending odessey of a young lad and his family grasping
for safety from the Nazi horde. A tribulous tale through Siberia also compels your interest. The story ends with the Golans reunited in the transition of Israel. A unique experience with the reader a part of it.

This book is typical of others published by DK, who also publish wonderful travel guides. It is a feast for the eyes, filled with beautiful pictures and detailed explanations. The recipes are divided into sections with the primary ingredient (cheese, meat, garlic, tomato) and classify according to cooking time (no cook, quick cook, slow cook), so it is very easy to narrow down dinner options based on what you have on hand and how much time you have. I've tried about a dozen recipes from the book and they have all been delicious and turned out almost as beautiful as the picture in the book.

One of the Best Cookbooks I Own

Truly, if I could only own one cookbook of pasta recipies, this book would be the one I'd want. There are countless books available on the subject and yet none I've seen present pasta cooking in such clarity and with such excellent results.

If you want to know how to make all the basics, and make them right, you'll find the answers here: Pasta with Olive Oil and Garlic, with Marinara, Pasta Primavera...they may seem simple but if you follow the directions here, you can't go wrong. Handy details include pasta noodle suggestions as well as alternatives that work well, and variations on recipies depending on what ingredients you have available as well as how you may want to experiment and mix things up. Many recipies in this book have become staples of my cooking, and favorites include the Pasta with Chick Peas and the perfect Putanesca. This cookbook gets my highest recommendation.

I picked up this about two months ago and have been making two or three recipes a week ever since. So far every one was been a keeper.

The recipes are clearly written, all ingredients are listed at the beginning (no surprises lurking in the last line of text) the directions are clear and easy to follow. Each recipe is illustrated by a large photograph, and indicates which type of pasta is best suited for that particular dish. In addition many recipes have variations offered.

Besides the recipes there is lots of other information concerning various types of pasta, proper preparation techniques, hints on stocking a pantry and storing ingregients and cooked dishes. Also there are a couple of meal planning charts, one based on ingredients and the other by suitability (summer, cold weather, for children, for parties etc) that come in handy when looking for a particular recipe.

I highly recommend this cookbook, even for a cook experienced with Italian cuisine this one has much to offer.

Soul Sword--A Spiritual Classic

I bought Soul Sword some years ago and recently reread it. This is a classic. I have given away most of my spiritual books, keeping only the ones that convey a certain energy of wholeness. Soul Sword made the cut.

Vernon Kitabu Turner writes with clarity and conciseness, revealing himself as one who walks the walk. You sense his commitment to the inner world and what it took him to arrive there.

What I like best about the book is its insistence on denying the mind's power over spirit. There comes a point when one must let go and that is where important spiritual work happens. One's soul sword cuts through the knots of suffering and voila! One is free.

Kitabu knows his stuff.

A Christian way of looking at Zen

This book tries to explain Zen concepts by quoting passages from the bible (the bible says this which really means this). If you are a devout Christian having trouble relating to Zen concepts like "no mind" then this book might help you reconcile such concepts with your Christian beliefs. For most readers I think this book will be more like tuning your TV to one of the religious channels.

I was lucky enough to learn about the Author in an interview with Enlightenment Magazine. Hidden in the text was the title of his book that I was fortunate to find and note. Being a practitioner of both Yoga and Mediation this is exactly the boost both practices and not to mention my life needed. Vernon Kitabu Turner/Roshi, hit upon topics I had internalized and slightly understood, but was unable to communicate. And others that I needed to hear to bring me beyond the basic physical mechanics of both my practices and touch the sprit that is with in all of us. I recommend this book and " The Secret of Freedom".

I have not only had the pleasure of reading Soul Sword and recommending it to my friends but I have been touched by its message. ...The author is a Dharma successor of a master and Truth is universal. Many Zen masters, ancient and current have no problem quoting the Bible. Soul Sword reveals that the author's Zen and Christian experience progressed seamlessly and without conscious design or internal conflict. He helps us to become aware that the divisions that we see are only because mind and spirit are split apart. Christ underscored this dichotomy as strongly as did The Buddha..."The mind and spirit are enmity to each other." we are told. In Soul Sword Kitabu outlines the path he took to warriorship, both physically and spirituallly, a path which brought his mind into submission to the Divine Spirit. This is what the biblical warriors, David, Joshua and Sampson also did. No one can prove that the Shaolin and Zen inspired samurai did not embrace that same Spirit in the silence of their meditation. That is their secret.

Soul Sword is not talk. When "What is Enlightenment?" magazine did nearly a 20 page aricle on the author, many people became curious and wanted to see or test him out. I witnessed an incredible demostration at Aikido of Fresno where he took on all comers in a peaceful loving manner. It was an open forum with masters and experts from any style invited to come. The author came alone. In one demonstration he knocked down six practitioners with a single finger while they resisted with all their strength. He was fluid, graceful and inspiring to all. Now that was Zen action. Religion is in the head, Soul Sword reveals it comes alive only after we put it into personal practice. By definition, when one can act from The Spirit of Heaven that is Zen. Zen is not a religion, per se. It is a word used to indicate athe methodology of taming the mind, and the activity which results from illuninated mind. D.T. Suzuki/Roshi said that Zen can be practiced by those of ANY religion. Vernon Kitabu Turner/Roshi and Soul Sword proves that it is so. Those of us here need American masters to help us understand and recover our Original nature. Who knows us better. Soul Sword is a bold step in that direction. I sincerely hope the author gives us more to digest.
