The collaborative work of John Watson, Carole Peterson, and Deanna Payne, In Our Backyards: Public And Private Gardens Of The Texas Coastal Bend is a showcase of the Corpus Christi Botanical Gardens & Nature Center, created to commemorate the center's new focus on local environmental issues and ecofriendly tourism. Beautiful full-color photography of public and private gardens give a personal view of delicate wildflowers, soothing greenhouses, somber statues, Mexican courtyards, and much more. Each location has a brief amount of text guiding the reader amid highlights of its harmoniously cultivated plant life. In Our Backyards is a rapturously beautiful giftbook and the next best thing to visiting Texas gardens in person.

I couldn't put this book down! This story gripped me from the very beginning. I didn't know much about American civilians being held prisoners of war and although this only tells of one family, I learned a lot about what the conditions must have been like for the thousands who were trapped in the Far East when the war broke out. It is well-written and not only provided a personal story but I learned a lot about the history of the war at the same time. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in women's history and WWII.

What a find! I purchased this book on a whim and was pleasantly surprised to discover it is a rare gem. Everything about the story, from the well-developed characters and setting to the perfectly written scenes and plot, is fabulous. I hope Julie Fletcher Watson is churning out another manuscript because she definitely has a gift for writing that shouldn't go to waste.

This is a neat little book. It covers life in a village, cities of India, Crops and Products, Things made in India, Going to School in India, their holidays and Festivals. There are also five stories that cover the above topics. The stories reinforce what was read. 112 pages. Black and white photographs. Color photographs and illustrations.

When I visited Mesa Verde some years ago, I looked for this book in the Park's Gift Shop bookcase. Sadly, it is not being sold there anymore. In its place are topical works meant for less educated [and interested] members of society.

'Indians of the Mesa Verde' gives the reader an excellent view into the world of these Ancient Americans and their way of life in their cliff dwellings. Little is sugar-coated to be politically-correct. The world of these Indians is accounted for by showing different chores through the seasons- from farming in the warmer months to the old and arthritis-ridden soaking up the feeble heat of the sun in the winters of southwestern Colorado.

Don Watson's book is worth having if you want to keep in mind that a whole culture once existed at that almost-mystical place before it had to endure the scourge of being a National Treasure subject to the ravages of public use and wear.

For anyone who is intrigued with the marriage of art and architecture in the design of living spaces, you should surely enjoy the works of this Indonesian design firm. They have impressed me with a creative sensitivity that is not normally considered nor enacted in the business of design and beyond all they show a very real design trademark that can be seen in all of their works. The book is very well written, giving the reader a educational tour supplemented with a good variety of well composed and detailed photographs. I really like the fact that the photographs are not the oft-expected tourist-like shots or the professional studio-like shots so prevalent in books of art and architecture. It appears to me that a lot of time and effort was put into this book. I am aware of the fact that the author is in fact an architect and for that reason he has a specific photographic sensitivity that makes his book even more interesting. I have learned more about Indonesian art and architecture, including a very informative section on building materials than I would have ever expected. This book is by far one of the best productions about the works of a design firm, anywhere on this planet.

A multi-layered web of hidden truths unfolds
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.

The Inquisitory is a singularly unique literary masterpiece by Robert Pinget. Written entirely in the format of the extended question-and-answer interrogation of an old, deaf servant (who is an unreliable narrator being grilled about unspecified crimes that may or may not have taken place at his master's French chateau), who hints at shady events ranging from tax fraud to murder, drug deals, and orgies. The elderly servant maintains distance, feigns ignorance, yet paints a stealthily accusatory picture -- if his testimony can be believed. A multi-layered web of hidden truths unfolds in this engrossing original work, which is superbly translated from the original French by Donald Watson.

This book is well worth every penny! It has all the information you would need for relocating or just for vacations. I would highly recommend it. My sister found it invaluable when she recently moved to the Wilmington, N.C. area.
