This is one of my favorite graphic design books - and is well worth the price if you can find it. This shows a collection from the early years (late 70's) until the late 80's. Before computer graphics April was playing with color xeroxing and cutting up photographs. She is one of the true giants of graphic design - and this book shows you why. She was VERY ahead of her time - doing graphics with a Mac when it first came out. Like the giants (Paul Rand) she has the heart of a fine artist - and ranks with the best of 'em.

I really liked this book. I liked the pictures. It made me feel brave and happy because I knew I could do whatever I set my mind to. Ali, 6 years old

This book was age appropriate for my daughter but not childish. It subtly encouraged her self confidence and subsequently her desire to try new things. The imagery helped give her a tool to use when confronted with challenging situations for her. We really enjoyed reading it.

This book is full of messy rooms, harried parents and a child's description of her little sister; as well as the emotions she feels towards her. Every page and sentence rings with the truth. Older children will connect with the honest feelings of the big sister. The artwork is well done. An enjoyable read and a treat for the eye.

The Idea of the Vernacular: An Anthology of Middle English Literary Theory, 1280-1520

An excellent source-book for anyone studying Middle English. It compiles an extensive selection of excerpts which demonstrate the ways in which medieval English writers struggled with the concept of writing in English, and defended their use of the vernacular. The accompanying essays range from excellent to mediocre, but the texts themselves make the book worth buying. By compiling texts about medieval literary theory, this book begins to fill a major gap in medieval studies.

In the last few years I have been searching books offering a general overview of the past, and I have realized that many books entitled "History of ...whatever" only provide information about the West, the rest of the world being almost ignored.

Watson's on ideas is different, is truly global. It is about ideas in general, not just abstract philosophy, all kind of them.I was surprised that no one else had made a comment before to this masterful work, which in my opinion can be savored by the professional historian and educated layperson alike, so I add mine.My rate is between 5 (content) and 4 (pleasure, sometimes falling to 3, sometimes raising to 5). I highly recommend it.

Other works whose scope is as amazingly global as Watson's and which I would suggest to read (hoping that will be of use for those looking for a broad framework to understand ourselves) are the following: 1. Agrarian cultures: "Pre-industrial societies" by Patricia Crone; 2. Economy: "The world economy. A millennial perspective" (2001) plus "The world economy: Historical Statistics" (2003) by Angus Maddison (a combined edition of these two volumes is to appear on December 2007); 3. Government: "The History of Government" by S.E. Finer; 4. Religion: "The Phenomenon of Religion: A Thematic Approach" by Moojan Momen; and 5. War: "War in Human Civilization" by Azar Gat.

Identifying Leica Lenses: The Complete Pocket Guide to Buying and Selling Leica Lenses Like an Expert

Mr. Sartorius has produced a concise and easy to read book. He has made a reasonable attempt to categorise the lenses in a logical and well-illstrated manner. The book largely succeeds at the difficult task of covering the myriad variations of Leica lenses, especially the screw-mount and early M-mount lenses. There is a rarity grading system and best of all, the lens diagrams of the featured lenses are provided. I recommend this book heartily to beginners and keen Leicaphiles alike. What you get is an excellent reference for the price.

A great way to introduce young people into the Greek culture that is so interwoven with our daily lives. Young children who read this book will have an easy introduction to a lasting foundation that will give them broader insight into a world that is filled with allusions to the Iliad and the Odyssey - things that children who have not been introduced to this world often miss. The illustrations by Alice and Martin Provensen are unforgettably beautiful and classic with motion that invites the observer to carry on to the next moment: horses and men fall in battle, the gods look on, Odysseus keeps an eye on the cyclops while his men prepare their escape, a map of the world at Homer's time with Greece at the center of the universe. Golden Books almost has a cultural obligation to re release this great children's book.

The Illuminated landscape by Peter Poskas is one of the better art publications I've ever purchased. Poskas makes his creative process easily understood by his duscussions on specific works, all of which are beautifly displayed throughtout the book. I read a page every night while viewing each painting, learning values, light, seasons atmospheric changes which he's a master at doing. I purchased the book in 1988 and I am hoping he will publish another one of these great books with more of his great works.

As a collector of medieval manuscripts, I found this book a wonderful resource for studying and researching within my own manuscripts, as well as others in the world. It's a very colorful and illustrated book, with many magnified and enlarged photographs of manuscripts so that the reader can get a better look at details! I recommend this book to any person who already collects manuscripts, or anyone who is simply interested in them, and needs information. You will find great history and background information within the pages of this book, as well. The "exhibit" in this book displays some of the most beautiful and inspiring manuscripts from the Victoria and Albert Museum. All 25 have good information and great photographs so that the reader can get "up close" to these priceless manuscripts. My applause goes out to the author, Rowan Watson, for a job WELL DONE!
