Clyde and Wendy Watson have done it again! This time they have taken jingles from Father Fox's Pennyrhymes and Catch Me & Kiss Me & Say it again and set them to music for pianos and guitars. Clyde was a musician for a while, so that's one reason why she set her poetry to music. These songs like the poems go well with the beautiful illustrations by Wendy. Father Fox's Pennyrhymes and Catch Me and Kiss Me and Say it again were my son Robert's favorite books to buy for people who were having babies. We are shocked that both those books, umlike the songbook, are out of print. We hope that the publishing company will start making and selling them again!

I believe this book can truely inspire others in similar situations, whether young or old. This book show the healing process between a mother and daughter during difficult time. It also touches on the fact that many children are abused on a regular basis and no one may know.

This is a unique book. Excellent is the only word that comes to mind. I particularly like how the photos illustrate the people and the surroundings for each race venue. They are much more evocative than the usual grainy images of cars on the track. You can not go wrong with this one.

Peter Watson does a great job of explaining how you visualize an image but his explanation of how he uses filters to warm up the scene or change the mood with a particular filter is worth the price of the book. I personally am beginning to pay attention to the techniques used by European and especially English photographer. It is a different prospective and one you can apply to your on style of landscape photography. Peters influence on how I now view a scene and how I handle the light I am dealt has given me many more option to make better images.

Try the book you will like it.

Must Have for Movie Music Fans

I recieved this book when I was a sophomore in high school (I'd played flute for three years) and now that I'm a junior in university (flute for nine years - piccolo for five) I still find that there are songs that I've yet to master. Songs are generally at an upper-intermediate level but there are songs below and above. Songs include themes from "Jurassic Park," "The Godfather," "Lawrence of Arabia," "Romeo and Juliet," etc, etc. If you can find this book for twenty dollars or less than you should consider it a steal. A must have for any movie music fan... 50 songs (1/2 page to 2 pages each).

A great collection devoted to the representation of Merlin in nineteenth and twentieth century art, literature, and popular culture. Miller's essay on Gandalf is especially insightful.

The magic of fol-de-rol: Mark Twain's Merlin / Allison Ensor

If you want to loosen up your work and/or paint outdoors efficiently and effectively, then this book will be a big help--as it has been for me. Even if you want to paint in a more representational, detailed style, than is represented here, getting the basics first as this book presents them could still greatly simplify things to make your process easier.

Edward Norton Ward's watercolor "sketches" (They are signed, so I assume he considers them completed paintings.), which are abundant throughout the book, at first might appear more simplistic than they are. In other words, there is experience and knowledge behind creating an effective, yet simple, watercolor. Mr. Ward has been generous in sharing this knowledge and the thoughts that are behind each painting. His discussions about simplifying the subject and the effects of light on color are particularly good. He also explains his painting process.

This book is useful in any case, but more useful if you paint outdoors, as that is its focus. His tips on traveling lightly and the materials he uses/prepares, has a couple valuable tips that I will use, even though after painting for a number of years I have already gone over the endless supplies combinations for painting outdoors.

The painting on the cover is a good representation of Ward's work and one that I like (although not my favorite). I admit that some of the paintings in this book do not appeal to me as the parts seem too detached and there are too many isolated dabs of paint. Others, however, elicit a sigh of appreciation, because they represent what I would like to be able to do: paint directly from nature in a very direct(impressionistic)style that doesn't involve a lot of fussing in the studio later--if I do not wish to do that--and still end up with a painterly thing of beauty. This book shows me how to achieve that goal more than any others I have studied.

I have just sorted through my rather extensive library on painting in watercolor with an eye to thinning down the collection to about half--to the ones that I deem most essential. I am keeping this book over several boxes of other watercolor books, a number by better known artists, simply because there is something valuable here that I want to learn, and I feel that I will use it as a reference for some time.

Paul Langford's book still remains the definitive work on the Marquis of Rockingham's first ministry. Detailed, thoughtful and well-written, it is a masterful insight into mid eighteenth-cetury British politics from one of the period's most distinguished contemporary historians.

My 5-year old grandson picked this one out when we were browsing the books at our local fabric store. He REALLY wanted to make one of those pets - an orange and white kitty. He couldn't do the machine sewing but he watched every step and took it all in. He did insist on stuffing the whole thing himself - as did his 4-year old sister who requested a pink kitty. My 8-year old granddaugter and 9-year old nieces and nephew all participated in making their own - some in the sewing, cutting, tracing, some in just the stuffing. Everyone now has a critter ready to go. We will make clothes for them at Grammy Camp this year. This has been the perfect project to get them really excited about sewing. The pattern is very adaptable. I made mine a little wider because my grandson wanted a FAT cat. We found we liked well used fleece (Goodwill or outgrown) better than new fleece for texture - even swiped one of Grampy's old fleece scarves and promised to make him a new one at camp.

Good science book on the subject, very thorough biographies of both Crick and Watson. Text is a little dry, but the occasioanl picture perks it up. Illustrations are in black and white. I would recommend this book to the 7th grade up, and will include a recommendation for the teachers as well.
