Typography is an important -- and, in this day of non-professionals "designing" newsletters, books, etc. at their computers -- usually overlooked part of design. This beautiful book introduces you to typography and shows how subtle differences in typeface, leading, and so on, affect readability and elegance.

Beyond Happiness by Gay Watson

I have had a life-long interest in psychology, religion and philosophy. For the last twenty years I have also been a student of Buddhism. Gay's book ties it all together. I was particularly taken with Chapter 8 in that I received a greater understanding of illusive ideas about who I am, what the self is and how the mind works (as present-day neuroscience is discovering). She says, "If we are to use this new knowledge and the longstanding Buddhist practices of awareness and attention skilfully in the service of wellbeing, I suggest that the major changes may be not so much what we do as how we do it."

A Solid Contribution to the Field

Jeff Watson uses his years of experience as a pastor and counselor, along with his seminary educational background, to provide a solid introduction to, as the title suggests, "Biblical Counseling Today." Not as well-known as other similar books, Watson's work deserves a hearing. He does a fine job summarizing where counseling is today and suggesting models that are both biblical and practical.

Exactly what I wanted!

I was tentative about buying this book since there were no reviews and no picture posted, but I was very pleasantly surprised! The whole thing is very concise but covers a lot of ground, the first 50 pages provide a brief art history lesson starting from cave paintings up to the 1950's with lots of pictures, touching on art around the world and focusing on figure drawings. The rest of the book covers drawing techniques and materials, among other things it features an in-depth explanation of how to achieve perspective in cityscapes and landscapes and helpful diagrams of body proportions and anatomy for life drawing. Also, the example drawings are beautiful and Parramon goes into specifics of how to achieve a wide range of effects and which materials will provide those results. There is a lot of information and if you're looking for an in-depth guide to any specific technique or period in art history this may not be a book for you, but if you just want an overview of EVERYTHING you need to know about drawing and its history without having to read an 800 page book, and you like seeing pictures more than reading, you've found a winner.

Great reference, excellent history & materials section
Helpful Votes: 28 out of 28 total.

This is a wonderful reference book for the watercolor painter. It contains all kinds of useful information to help you understand the medium and improve your knowledge and skills.

The first 40 pages provide a great history of watercolor painting, so often overlooked in the overall scheme of art history. Then all the aspects of setting up a work area and studio are covered followed by a very thorough materials and tools section. There are example pictures and descriptions of everything from easels to paper and brushes to paint. There is also a paper stretching demo and a watercolor color chart.

A section on the principles of drawing follows. This includes instructions on making simple shapes, creating perspective, Plato's rule, golden sections, drawing a quick sketch and more. Then various watercolor techniques such as creating washes, erasing with a dry brush and achieving texture with salt and turpentine are covered. Next, there are two chapters on color theory and mixing explaining warm, cool and broken colors as well as color schemes and values. A nice demo of painting a watercolor with three colors is included.

The last chapters deal with techniques, skills and actually beginning the painting process. Here you find information and advice on painting the human figure, skies, clouds, trees, landscapes, illustrations and seascapes. There are no real projects here and no reference photos. Rather the focus is on general advice for painting various subjects with example demonstrations. A helpful glossary is included in the back. This is certainly one of the most thorough, useful and entertaining books I have seen for the beginning watercolorist.

This is a cool LITTLE book
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 1998-12-07
This is a very elegant little book (4.5 inches square) about a very interesting, cutting edge glass structure. The glass palace at Leipzig is perhaps the most significant glass structure since the Crystal Palace in 1850. (The Crystal Palace is still the more remakable in many respects.) In spite of its small format it is crammed with interesting detailed information regarding the project and many photos and sketches. Guess the concept was to have the smallest book in the world about the largest glass palace in the world. Still, I can't help but wish it was in a 12x12 format, like the Phaidon publications. The font is very small and dificult to read, and much of the detail in the drawings is lost. However, a must read for anyone interested in modern glass architecture. I'd love to build one in the U.S.!
