Vademecum of typefaces
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2002-04-04
Paracelsus said that every substance in the world can cure and every substance can kill, and that the only difference was made by dose and timing. So, the art of using substances to cure involves the wisdom of chosing among thousands of them which one, how much, how combined, and when, is adequate for an individual case.
That is why pharmacysts and physicians get thick books where they read about the origins, composition, benefits, mechanisms of action and risks of every substance, so they can decide and suggest the appropriate procedure under their professional knowledge and responsibility.
Well, Haley does that with typography.
Reviewing just a few, a well picked, an even obvious, few typefaces among the dozen thousand available to designers, Haley shows us the origins, composition, benefits, mechanisms of action and risks of each one of them as if he was talking about medicine or fine wines.
ABC's stands for Attributes, Background and Considerations for use, reviewed methodically for each typeface quoted.
No restraining and arbitrary design rules, no false aesthetic freedom. Just knowledge, experience, sensible common sense.
Just this is how this typeface works, this is how it does not work, its advantages, inconveniences, risks, for you to choose and combine after you have read this book under your own professional knowledge and responsibility.

A walker in Boston ("A pedestrian is a man in danger of his life; a walker is a man in possession of his soul "

I do not know Boston well. I have no special interest in it. But sometimes one reads a book which simply goes to another place , and takes one to and through a world one largely doesn't know. This book did that for me. McCord is a wonderful observer of the city, particularly sensitive to the way it is perceived from various streets, neighborhoods, and times. He is a cultured observer and a walker in the city. He tells us how it developed and gives historical accounts of its great institutions and landmarks. He walks us through the Boston Common, including details of some horrifying moments of its past, when public hangings were done there. He observes how it is transformed through time, and through the eyes of some of the famous citizens of the city. McCord seems to have a particular affection for someone who lived outside the city, Thoreau and quotes him frequently. He does not however make the tour of the North Side, or the Holmes Garden or Harvard Yard, or Charles Street Number 148, in a very formal way but does it lightly and impressionistically. He gives the sense of worlds within worlds filled with city life.
In one wonderful chapter he talks about the particular challenges of walking in the narrow winding streets of Boston,'from Atlantic Avenue to the Commons , from Charles Street to the Fenway, from Dover Street to Castle Island ....He details tens of different ways of walking through the city, and experiencing what to him was clearly a source of daily delight.

Great Adventure Story
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2002-01-10
I recently bought this book second hand thinking I might enjoy looking at some of the pictures. Travel journals are not my thing.

I only read a few paragraphs and I was hooked. It's a fantastic adventure story by an 'ordinary' guy. He frequently gets the wrong end of the stick (and thanks to editor's notes you'll be able to tell when), but his warmth and humanity always show through.

This is less a story about Inuits than it is about a man who finds himself in an alien culture and a harsh environment. The narrative is often funny, always entertaining, and occasionally moved me to tears.

Acrylic colors are the newest and most exciting medium in painting today. In this companion volume to his famous "Oil Painting for the Beginner", Frederic Taubes explores the nature of acrylic colors--their permanence and chemical behavior--and then discusses the materials and equipment required, including supports and how to prepare them; brushes and painting knives; diluents, varnishes, and solvents; and, finally, suggested colors. Taubes also shows how to use acrylics in glazes, scumbles, and in opaque and impasto techniques; in painting still life, flower studies, landscapes, portraits, figures, and murals; and in mixed-media techniques--working oil paint over a day acrylic underpainting to achieve texture, highlights, flesh tones, or transparent, brilliant color.

This clearly written, informative book is invaluable to students and artists wishing to broaden their painting techniques through the use of acrylic colors. The book is richly illustrated, with twenty-six color plates, seventy-three black-and-white drawings and photographs, and twenty-four step-by-step demonstrations.
