I am, in fact, Nicola Ackland-Snow's sister, and you may think that because of this, my review would be biased, but in fact I thought it was amazing. I'm not an artist, actually, I'm useless, unlike Nicola, but this book provided a different perspective to this kind of art. I really liked it!

Excellent-definitely worth a look!

After reading this book I wanted to find out more about the art of designing club flyers. I especially liked the work Nicola Ackland-Snow had done herself, and I admire this work...well done Nicola, Nathan and Steven!

I'm currently taking a class that Bob Gill is teaching, I'm looking forward to reading his book, I know just from knowing him that most likely it is a brilliant book, as the prior reviewer noted.

Bob Gill is a genius when it comes to graphic design, and this book is the proof of it. While this edition may be out of print, it would be a worthy addition to any personal or professional creative library. So if you don't own this book it's well worth the wait or extra fee.

While the work presented here has a very dated 70's look to - that not what's important. The idea behind the work is that the graphic design communicates an idea. Each page in the book starts by giving you an "orginal problem" from a client - and then shows how Gill comes up with a solution to to not only solving the problem , but to redefine it. Gill uses a wide range of styles to solve his problems including plain typography, illustration and photography. His work is very clever, and is the opposite of people who just make pretty pictures.

This book would also be great for a copywriter or anyone trying to understand creative communication. If you can't get your hands on this book, I would suggest "A Smile in the Mind" published by Phaidon, which includes many bits of work found in "Forget all the rules about graphic design". However I hope the publisher will do a reprint, because this book should be read by every student of graphic design.

Heim and Hansen have done it again! I bought Free Stuff for Quilters for my wife, and she loves it. We bought Free Stuff for Crafty Kids for our children, and we all love it. The beginning of the book is solid Internet information, the stuff everyone surfing should know. The meat of the book is a large assortment of "crafty" sites for everyone, young and old, of all skill levels. Sure we could find similar sites on our own. But why bother? Heim and Hansen did all the work and leave us with all the fun. I'm making kites with my son. My wife and daughter are polishing their drawing skills and learning about rubber stamping. I highly recommends this book!

The sites are terrific and well researched, but what I really liked best was all the information about how to make surfing the internet safe for my kids.

What a terrific book! Gloria provides links that will help you find shows, shops, guilds. She has information on museums, festivals, retreat, cruises, hotels, airplanes, trains, weather, maps, discounts, tourism. Whew! Understand that URLs come and go as quickly as the daffodils of spring. The lead time for a book makes it inevitable that you will find some bad links. There are so many, you won't miss those few that have disappeared.

If you have never opened a book by Aldren Watson, you are missing one of the treats of woodworking literature. The line drawings are unbelievably clear and helpful. The text is easy to read and if you follow the instructions, you'll actually produce what he's describing.

I haven't found an erroneous measurement or missing item from a list of materials. His style leads you to believe you can actually do this stuff (and you don't need $10k worth of power tools).

Excellent book for the beginner or amateur woodworker. Well written, simple explanations of all the basics with hundreds of great, clear drawings and diagrams (the excellent illustrations in this book really makes it stand out over the vast majority of books of this type). Also included are instructions for eleven different interesting furniture projects.

Good read on Irish immigrant railroad workers, cholera and ghosts
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2006-08-07
This book offers a fascinating look into the world of 1830s-era
Philadelphia and its environs. There is interesting material
here on the history of immigration, the Irish in America, railroad construction, epidemiology, ghosts and folklore. The core of the book is a story about Irish railroad workers in Chester County that was largely unknown until the authors began studying it (they obtained a historical marker for it from the Commonwealth's Historical Commission in 2004). In addition, there are interesting ghost stories that will make for better than average Halloween reading.

An Irish-American Tragedy
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2006-08-06
This remarkable new book is a must read for Irish-American history. A reconstruction of the fate of an immigrant Irish work crew who died of cholera (and possible violence) while building the Philadelphia and Columbia Railroad in rural Chester County in 1832 is the main focus. The story of the tragic deaths of 57 young Irish immigrants is combined with much fascinating detail concerning Irish and Irish-American history of the time. The much neglected history of the P and C Railroad is handled very well as is the discussion of the pandemic of Asiatic Cholera in North America. There is even a evocatively described ghost story. Readable, yet scholarly, this is an incredible book.

I found this book at my library and brought it home for my kids. They loved it! My son is just starting to read and recognize words (he's 5),and he couldn't put it down. He loved the idea of the kids finding something fantastic as they go exploring in the woods. We live on a wooded lot so it really struck home for him. I highly reccomend this book!!

Beautiful and fun portrayal of "the feamle" at play. Trevor Watson holds an uncanny ability to demonstrate "the erotic" in a non-offensive, professional manner.

Delightful and elegant coffee table book
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2001-06-12
This is a delightful and elegant coffee table book for glass artists and enthusiasts. Its small size makes it a versatile accent piece that can be used almost anywhere and the spiral binding makes in easy to leaf through.

The book starts out with an overview of glass including history and a summary of how various types of glass are made. A variety of glass decoration techniques are then explained including glazing, painting, staining, sandblasting, acid etching, fusing, slumping, casting and bonding. These are not intended as instruction, rather as a general guide to glassmaking methodology.

A beautiful and varied showcase of over 30 pieces of glass artwork follows. Each piece is displayed by itself on a single page. On the opposite page, along with the artwork title, size and date completed, there is background information on and a quote from the artist.

There is a great glossary, index and list of artists with contact information. This book is fascinating for casual browsing and will inspire any glassmaker for years to come.

this book is beautifully bound. contains bright colorful photography and a quick narrative on different techniques of art glass. it doesn't go into blowing very much, but it does provide some examples on techniques that may not be know as widely to the layman. it's not a how-to on the techniques, but more of a catalog on them. i got it as a gift and i really love it.

Art and poetry as art should be published
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2000-11-23
This book is my ideal in an art book - it provides the paintings without discussion, allowing the viewer to response naturally, then it provides a number of details from the painting much in the manner one focuses one's attention in a gallery.

The paintings are well paired with poetry - poetry that in some manner touches the same theme as the painting but in a separate media.

Example pairings: Sandro Botticelli's "Mystic Nativity" with the traditional English carol "Angels we have heard on high"; Duccio's "The Annunciation" with Edwin Muir's "The Annunciation"; an associate of Leonardo da Vinci's "An Angel in Red with Lute" with an extract of Edgar Allan Poe's "Israfel"; ...

This is an excellent meditational art and literature book.

Poetry and paintings
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2001-05-10
This is a great little book that is smaller than the size of an average persons hand. The paintings come from the National Gallery in London and include masterpieces from such notables as Botticelli, Poussin, Baocci and Carravaggio. The literature used comes from masters of prose as well including such diverse writers as Edgar Allan Poe, St Augustine, Tolstoy, Mark Twain, Dylan Thomas and Dante to name a few. The paintings selected are divided into four sections basically, angels, Jesus, Mary and the saints. The book is printed and bound in Italy and is of good thick stock and very sturdy. The color is very good and the detail is exquisite. This book is a perfect companion for those moments alone when contemplation takes one beyond the mundane ordinary existence. The beauty of this book is the matching of poetry with a painting. Every painting is matched up with a piece of writting. Each painting is shot from various angles, often for dramatic effect, getting extreme closeups of the expressions on the subjects. The details of the individual paintings are brought to full light. The paintings are all magnificent representaions of inspired art that has withstood the test of time, through wars, plagues and famines and the inherent beauty of the art comes to life anew in this marvelous little paperback. At just over 140 pages this book can be read in one sitting but it is one that deserves to be kept handy to reflect upon often. A great book for those interested in the works of the masters ala carte.
