Unforgettable ClassicReview Date: 2001-01-14
While the work presented here has a very dated 70's look to - that not what's important. The idea behind the work is that the graphic design communicates an idea. Each page in the book starts by giving you an "orginal problem" from a client - and then shows how Gill comes up with a solution to to not only solving the problem , but to redefine it. Gill uses a wide range of styles to solve his problems including plain typography, illustration and photography. His work is very clever, and is the opposite of people who just make pretty pictures.
This book would also be great for a copywriter or anyone trying to understand creative communication. If you can't get your hands on this book, I would suggest "A Smile in the Mind" published by Phaidon, which includes many bits of work found in "Forget all the rules about graphic design". However I hope the publisher will do a reprint, because this book should be read by every student of graphic design.

Watson - we have a (book)case to solveReview Date: 2008-11-01
I haven't found an erroneous measurement or missing item from a list of materials. His style leads you to believe you can actually do this stuff (and you don't need $10k worth of power tools).

Good read on Irish immigrant railroad workers, cholera and ghostsReview Date: 2006-08-07
Philadelphia and its environs. There is interesting material
here on the history of immigration, the Irish in America, railroad construction, epidemiology, ghosts and folklore. The core of the book is a story about Irish railroad workers in Chester County that was largely unknown until the authors began studying it (they obtained a historical marker for it from the Commonwealth's Historical Commission in 2004). In addition, there are interesting ghost stories that will make for better than average Halloween reading.

Delightful and elegant coffee table bookReview Date: 2001-06-12
The book starts out with an overview of glass including history and a summary of how various types of glass are made. A variety of glass decoration techniques are then explained including glazing, painting, staining, sandblasting, acid etching, fusing, slumping, casting and bonding. These are not intended as instruction, rather as a general guide to glassmaking methodology.
A beautiful and varied showcase of over 30 pieces of glass artwork follows. Each piece is displayed by itself on a single page. On the opposite page, along with the artwork title, size and date completed, there is background information on and a quote from the artist.
There is a great glossary, index and list of artists with contact information. This book is fascinating for casual browsing and will inspire any glassmaker for years to come.

Art and poetry as art should be publishedReview Date: 2000-11-23
The paintings are well paired with poetry - poetry that in some manner touches the same theme as the painting but in a separate media.
Example pairings: Sandro Botticelli's "Mystic Nativity" with the traditional English carol "Angels we have heard on high"; Duccio's "The Annunciation" with Edwin Muir's "The Annunciation"; an associate of Leonardo da Vinci's "An Angel in Red with Lute" with an extract of Edgar Allan Poe's "Israfel"; ...
This is an excellent meditational art and literature book.
