It is therefore hard to compare it, yet anyone with a cursory knowledge of recent African-American music can tell this is a well planned and well written book.
It offers history, musical investigation and a social context to Go Go music.
As a Londoner who went to clubs that played Go Go here in the 80's I was particularly pleased that the London Go Go scene of that era was covered in the book in addition to the obvious Washington one.
I recommend this book to all Go Go fans, Hip Hop fans, and anyone with an interest in an extraordinarily Funky music form.
FINALLY A BOOK ABOUT THE DC BEAT THAT MAKES YOU FREAKY-DEAKReview Date: 2001-09-27
Who really created this style of music called Go-Go? What is Ju-Ju music? What does it have in common with Go-Go Music? What do Pentecostal Churches and the Go-Go Culture have in common? What was Go-Go music referred to as before the title of Go-Go? Why? If RE is so good, then why don't they have a major record deal? Who did Jas. Funk develop his style from? EU was beat out by what artist for the American Music Award? Where did Max Kidd come from? How long has EU actually been together? What is the deal with women in Go-Go? Who was the Committee To Save Go-Go represented by? What exactly is Liaison's position in Go-Go? What happend with Jig-A-Boo, and why did they change their name? What part did Cathy Hughes actually play in Go-Go? How has the internet played a factor in the Go-Go culture? And of course, what are the pros & cons of PA Tapes?
All these questions and many, many more are answered in this extensive book documenting Washington DC Go-Go music's past, present and future. With interviews from the likes of Terance Cooper of Backyard Band, Donnell Floyd of 911, Tom Goldfogle of Liaison Records, Little Benny, Andre "Whiteboy" Johnson of Rare Essence, Mrs. Mack of Rare Essence, Kato of TMOTTGoGo Magazine, Lawrence "The Maniac" West, Big Rosey of Trouble Funk, Benjy Little of GoGo Swings Magazine, James Funk, DJ Flexxx, Ignatius Mason, Soldierette of TMOTTGoGo, Ken Moore of Icy-Ice, Big Al, Sugar Bear of EU, film maker Bruce Brown, Charlie Fenwick of HotColdSweat, and many, many others.

Bodie, CA is a must see after reading this bookReview Date: 2007-02-02
"In 1879 through 1881Bodie, California was one of the richest mining towns in the West." Located in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, the town is now a historic state park. Both gold and silver were excavated from the town's mines. "Bodie is the best-preserved ghost town in the West.
James Watson and Doug Brodie combine history, legend and never before shared stories with their readers to bring to life the image of Bodie, once a thriving town now a ghost town.
The author's discuss how to obtain an education in an obscure isolated town called Bodie. "The Bodie Public School opened its doors the second Tuesday of March, 1878." There were 10 eager students. Within two weeks there were 40 students. The teacher was paid $100.00 per month.
The town is located 15 miles from Mono Lake. The lake has been referred to as "the Dead Sea of the West." The lake was used for transporting materials "to build the railroad and to haul wood products and lumber."
In 1911 a blizzard hit the area resulting in three avalanches, leaving nine dead. "The tremendous weight of snow on the mountainside gave way and with a roar bore down on the unsuspecting occupants of the dwellings....Within seconds the powerhouse and cottages were ripped off their foundations and flattened."
"Big Bad Bodie: High Sierra Ghost Town," by James Watson and Doug Brodie, is fascinating. The combination of facts and myth helps to teak the reader's interest. The photographs add much to the story, bringing the town to the reader. I found myself pondering the photographs. My husband and I are born tourist, we definitely want to see Bodie. I highly recommend this book to those interested in history, travel, ghost stories and nonfiction.

Inspiring..Review Date: 2003-06-09
With its hefty selection of works to see and be inspired from, With clear sections and a selectiveness uncharacteristical of carter, this book can be used over and over again, and you can always find something new in it.
It is also of great value. If Graphis ( a high-end graphic design publisher) was to publish such a volume, you can bet the price will be over a hundred dollars.
In short, every designer needs this book.

The first great book on music of the milleniumReview Date: 2001-10-17
So well written and illustrated. It is forwarded
by Vladimir Ashkenazy. The book starts with a section
about music in non-western civilizations, there it
explains the role of music in early cultures of the world,
From Ancient Egypt, to China; from the Ancient American
cultures, to Africa; and from Oceania to the near east to
the Holy Roman Empire, this section of the book has it all.
Then the book is divided in by order of musical periods
thru the ages. Starting with the medieval era, it lists
key events of this period, starting in the 800's. It mentions
and tells about the great names of the era in music,
including de Vitry(1291-1361) and Machaut(1300-1377).
It also explains such teaching devices as the 'Guidonian Hand'.
Then comes the Renaissance, here, it explains the rise
of humanism, it speaks also of major events of the time.
It also tells a bit about the Reinassance courts of Europe
and the composers of the time:Cristobal de Morales(1500-53)
Thomas Morley(1557-1602), Orlande de Lasuss(1532-94). This
section also speaks of the rise of instruments.
One to the Baroque where the where we are start seeing the
the start of new musical forms and procedures, sucha as the
masque, the music drama, the French grand motet. Also music in tenary form etc. The section on the classical period again famous
composers and musicians, explinations of classicism, rococco, and the instruments of the time.More on composers, specially Mozart and Beethoven. On to the the romantic period where we start
to see development in musical instruments, and styles, we also
see how the orchestra gets bigger. Finally, the book comes to
the early and late 20th century. The book does a wonderful job, pictures and tales of 20th century composers. This is the first
book that I have where I find a picture of John Adams and Sofia Gubaidulina in in the same book, in this book, for the first time also, our contemporary composers are treated with great respect, and as equal to their counterparts of the bygone ages. I picture that I like very much is in PG.324 where Cage, and Boulez shake hands in fron of Massien. The art work is of the best quality. This is indeed a good book that I recomend to every classical music lover, and friend. The amazon.com price is so
affordable, and competitive.

The comic for non-comics readersReview Date: 2003-03-26
His stories have that lived-in feeling and his characters eminate from real life in a way that is all too rare in today's spandex-obseesed comics market. BAN is a particularly English story, sprinkled as it is the British slang and set in an English town reeling from the closing of a local manufacturing plant. The couple caught in the center of the story could be friends of yours, but Watson makes them distinct individuals with their own agendas and desires. This is a slice-of-life story with no urgent plotting or climatic ending. But that doesn't mean that BAN is without suspense or dramatic purpose, but it achieves its meaning and resonance thru character instead of external plot machinations, which is refreshing in a medium so often over-written.
And Andi's art is a true treasure, and the best part is he keeps getting better with each subsequent series. He's done other excellent work and has a new series coming out for ONI Press where he plans on putting his own unique twist on the world of superheroes.
BAN is the comic you can read and feel confident passing along to your non-comics reading friend. It's a great book by a great artist.

Bruckner's Best Critical Bio...Review Date: 2007-07-24
Oxford UP reissued the old Dent Master Musicians series in updated texts. Unfortunately, Oxford quickly let the series go out of print.
Watson's Bruckner is about the best critical bio around. It's not perfect, but till we get a better, it's all we've got.
Bruckner is still not well understood: certainly less so than Beethoven, Bach, Mozart, Wagner, Mahler, et alii.
He was a trained school teacher who was well versed in Latin; moreover, he was a professional organist appointed to the royal house of Hapsburg, who toured Europe representing the Austro-Hungarian empire.
He was fêted in Paris by César Franck, Charles Gounod, Camille Saint-Saëns, and Ambroise Thomas (president of the Paris Conservatoire) [tough crowd!!] when he performed on the Cavaillé-Coll organ of la Notre Dame de Paris.
He performed to much acclaim at the Cyrstal Palace in London.
Furthermore, of course, he was a professional musician who had completed full courses with Schubert's teacher Simon Sechter; and whose works were performed by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.
To crown his lifetime's work, in 1895 he was awarded a Ph.D. by the University of Vienna.
Dr. Bruckner was a very complex man who practiced sincere humility.
And as Oscar Wilde aptly says, "Simplicity is the last refuge of the complex."
Look for other books in this series: Schoenberg (Master Musicians Series) ; Franck (Master Musicians Series) ; Chopin (Master Musicians Series) ; Schubert (Master Musicians Series) ; Brahms (Master Musicians Series) ; Mahler (Master Musicians Series) ; Bach (Master Musicians Series) ; Beethoven (Master Musicians Series) .

The first one, "WannaBlessedBe"
is five by five! This story is written by two of my favorite people, Chris Golden & Amber Benson. I loved the way they handled
Willow & Tara's relationship, very subtle, very BtVS 4th/ fifth season.(This story takes place in the fifth season.) What
I also loved about this story was the way it was drawn (done by Terry Moore, Strangers in Paradise genius).Beautifully done.5/5
Oh,
and check out Tara reading "Strangers in Paradise"!
The second story, "Wilderness" was awesome! It takes place in the sixth season. I love this action-packed story of Willow, Tara and Dawn taking a fieldtrip. Also written by Amber Benson and Chris Golden. The graphics aren't as beautifully done as in the previous story, but it totally suits the story. 5/5
The third instalment is a short story written by Andi Watson. It's a cute story that takes place in the fifth season. 3.5/5
I recommend this collection to any Buffy fan or comics fan, especially if you're a fan of Willow and Tara.
