A Book About Life

I'm not an artist, but I read this book when I was a graduate student in another field. It's really a book about life and how to live it, so it's really a useful read for just about anyone. I have thought about this book many times over the years, and always am reminded of it's great and enduring wisdom. I'm here now to buy 2 copies of the book for friends how are artists in New York City and struggling to make a living. They really need this book, and if they apply its principles it will certainly improve their finances and overall quality of life. One other book which I read years ago also has incredible wisdom about money, value and worth. Its called "Money Love." It's worth a search to find it if you are having as much trouble with financial issues as most people have.

A helpful book.

When I graduated ( MA Fine Art) a fellow art student gave me this book intending it to be a joke. I applied what I learned from reading this book and was thereafter successful in marketing my art product. I recommend this book.

Author/artist Kenneth Harris offers a unique perspective.

Review Date: 1999-02-24
Kenneth Harris (1904-1983) punctures the pretensions of the dilletante and the high priced snob/artist with this highly readable and often witty book. Harris recommends a pragmatic "what the market will bear" approach to pricing and selling your art. His approach, however, sacrifices none of the artist's honesty and emotional connection to his work. Rather, he advocates getting the art into the hands of the people who want it, at prices they can afford. Harris also gives his opinion and advice on such things as securing an agent, staging one man exhibitions, New York Galleries, entering open exhibits, and others.

This is a very useful and perhaps, attitude-changing book.

I Wanna Iguana brings out warm feelings in anyone who reads the book, be that person child or adult. Ostensibly it's about loving and caring for an unusual pet. But I believe it carries a deeper message--that we personally grow from accepting anything or any human different from ourselves. Read this great picture book, and I know you'll agree.

As an ersatz photographer, I am aware of what it takes in some small degree to photograph people, no less celebrities. Jack Mitchell's persona allows those about him to drop all pretense and expose themselves to the world in a glimpse of a moment frozen forever in time through Jack's lemses. The rarity of capturing that elusive moment is a particulate spot made available to a select few. And that is as rare as the individual behind the camera, Jack Mitchell is such a rarity and his photographs should be an iconic moment frozen in our psyche forever. There were many individuals photographed here from a different era whom I was unfamiliar with, and this will lead me to discover a bit more about their lives and who they were at the time that photograph was shuttered. This book is a monolith monument, get a copy while it is available.

Don't be fooled by the rip-off titles of other photogs.

Mr. Mitchell has done simply an outstanding and unique job as a photographer of famous people. There is another book out with a similar title that is inferior in all respects. Stick with ICONS AND IDOLS by Jack Mitchell.

Each photograph makes you feel like you are touching a star.

Jack Mitchell has worked magic in transforming his photographs into works of art that explode with life. They are vibrant and alive, capturing the essence of each 'Icon and Idol'. By the very nature of celebrity we think we "know" these people. Mr. Mitchell has captured these public people by penetrating through the veneer to take us into their respective souls. His photographs are pure works of art that one never gets tired of viewing.

The plot was fascinating, kind of like the picture brides of the past. Fierce women are shipped to a town, believing it's a large city, only to find it be be out in the middle of nowhere. Females will love these romances, adults may also. Very graphic at times, but nothing raunchy.

For the next generation of Danielle Steel and Sandra Brown readers, this is where you start.

A LOT OF ANGST AND CONFUSION

Review Date: 2005-09-02
Please where would someone come up with a name like Doak? Rich society?
Pierce McDougal the third is not happy with A. J. Ferguson. [grin] And we know why, yes?
First: she protects the victims, not allowing the detective to harrasse them. And Mac is not into relationships. [Yeah! right]
Second: she is too determined not to accept help from anyone. Not even when she needs it.
Third: she keeps herself shut off from everyone. What is her problem?

Mac has problems of his own and refuses to acknowledge them.
He hasn't even told them to his partner, Jake Donovan, and Mac is 33 years old. At this age he still won't talk?

Mac needs information that he is sure Mindy Talbott or her son, Jamie has that could lead to their capturing Doak Talbott, a big time abuser.
He and Jake are trying to connect Doak to the suspected murder of a Country Club waitress.

Ah, but daddy, Pierce McDougal is a member of the Country Club and in partnership with Talbott.
Mac displays a certain emphathy and gentleness for Jamie and his mother.

Doak Talbott weaves in and out of the story with enough force to keep the mystery alive and dangerous.
My problem with the story is these characters who acknowledge that they shouldn't but do anyway. Yeah, hop into bed. Boy! what inconsistancy! But that is hormones, I guess.

Excellent story - Recommended --M - keeps you reading!

Yep. In Her Defense has heart and soul, a great read! A bit of suspense and a whole bushel basket of emotion. I loved A.J. and Mac. They're great characters--and very sexy, to boot.

Excellent secondary characters, too. I want to see some of them again! Crossing my fingers for a followup on Jake, for instance.

A terrific read, no holds barred. For me, it was a can't-put-it-down read.

One caveat--I only write reviews about books I've really, really liked, and this is sure one.

For Your Protection

I enjoyed this book. It moves along quickly. A.J. Ferguson
has had so much in her world to deal with she thinks she can
do many things on her own. Mac McDougal is another policeman
who wants to solve this case. He doesn't want to work with
A.J. but she is the only one who can tell him where Mindy
Talbott and her son are being protected from her husband who
beat them very badly. Talbott is a prime suspect in the
disappearance of another woman. A. j. is to learn she can't
do everything by herself.

It was late at night when A.J. left headquarters heading for
her car. Suddenly without warning a arm slipped around her
neck and yanked her back into the wall of a male body. It was
Talbott. Where are they?, he wanted to know. Something glittered
in the parking lot light. Something stabbed into her side.
She reached for her car keys punching every key until the
sound of the cars horn ripped through the air. A car door
slamed. Talbott pushed he forward saying "I'll be back".
Mac found her on the ground. Call an ambulance! he ordered.

Suddenly he realized how important A.J. is to him even if they
are constantly fighting about something. This is a fast
moving mystery. You will enjoy it. You are glad you are not
there and if you were, you need protection form Talbott. How
could anyone be that mean? A.J. and Mac are able to protect
Talbott's wife and child from him. Thank goodness!

I have known Father Watson for five years. I was his assistant at the Gonzaga University Jesuit House for two years, and he officiated my marriage in the Catholic church. He is a wonderful, holy man, and this book, like his life, reminds us that God should be the focus of our lives. These simple prayers and excercises are an invaluable tool to bring God back into our hearts, to improve the Church, our lives, and the state of the world. For anyone whose faith is wavering, and for those looking for a way to increase their focus on God in their daily life, this book is for you.

I recommend this book to anyone who wants to strengthen his/her soul against the forces of evil.

Similar to the mighty warriors on a great mission who fight against the dark forces of evil in Star Wars and The Lord of the Rings this book instructs and reveals tools and skills to train Christians on how to become mighty warriors for the King of Kings against evil in the world and to bring about His kingdom of peace.

I am going to buy many copies for my relatives, employees, and friends.

May the Force be with you!

I have just discovered this book and it is wonderful. I have been in religious life for twenty years and this book has already deepened by experience of prayer in just the short time that I have been reading it. It is a simple but powerful book. Father Watson makes the love of God for us tangible and exciting. "Your life is in reality a mission leading to eternal life. God is the orgin of, the reason for, as well as the journey's destination. Where are you on the journey?" With these words Father continues step by step to guide each of us in finding our life's mission. That which will bring us the greatest joy, the greatest happiness and ultimately the greatest peace. I love this book.

but the lessons on those pages are taught with such clarity they will stick with you and help when you go further with your talents into areas like colored pencil, watercolor, pen and ink, acrylics or even oils.

The lessons include things like perspective, a lesson taught in just about every book on art written today. It seems so many books cover this topic because it is such a hard topic to teach - notice I say teach and not learn. If it was easy to teach then more of us would learn it and would not have such a hard time with the concept. Bill Martin has touched something in his lessons on perspective, at least for me, and I will never have the same difficulty with perspective again. At least if I do in the future, I will have this little gem to pick up and refer to! He does not cover this topic quickly, but goes into it slowly and covers it quite completely, as he does most difficult topics. I will no sell the four or five books on my shelves devoted to perspective, books purchased to help clarify a topic once so unclear.

The only downside about his book is the section on color theory, which could be much more indepth. There is only a small chapter covering it at the end, almost as though it was an afterthought. It would have been great to see Mr. Martin tackle the important and often difficult topic of color with the same skill he had handled perspective and so many others in this great little book!

I have had this book for over 20 years, and I keep going back to it. It is a delight to read because of the enthusiasm and exhuberance of its author for sketching and painting. He's inspirational, in other words. Also, many books teach compositional theories and methods, but this book contains an intuitive approach; and following it, the student learns composition by doing--getting out and sketching and coloring one's sketches. So design, or composition, is a major theme. He also majors on color, and again the method is learning by doing, by experimenting with mixing color, starting with a small palette of pigments and working up to a set of 40 different tubes (in the second book "More Joy of Watercolor," which of course is also good). But even though Millard's approach is experimental and intuitive, along the way he shares a whole host of vital principles for good painting and design and color use. In conclusion, Millard got me going in sketchbooks those many years ago, and I have learned best through the years by filling them with little color sketches. Highest recommendation.

This is an excellent book on watercolor that helps you teach yourself to paint. It is one of the few watercolor books that I have seen that uses brilliant color. The book concentrates of landscape and still life, which are the topics that most people will have ready access to and the author's method of having you keep a sketchbook and paint at least 15 minutes a day is a wonderful way to learn. His suggestion that you always include figures in your landscapes is also excellent as most people wish to avoid figure work. THIS BOOK GETS YOU PAINTING.

This is the greatest book ever on the history of film making in L.A. There are pictures in it from the Watson family albums that you'll never find anywhere else. And that Coy Jr. lived it makes this book all the more impressive. It's a first person retelling of a most precious time in film history ... the birth of film making in L.A.

I'm fortunate enough to live near Edendale, now Echo Park. I brought Coy Jr's book with me when I visited the area and found many of the places shown in pictures in his book. What a chill I got standing in the same places he wrote about. Of course, the two studios are long gone. As well as the theater he went to. But some of the other houses and stores still remain intact.

The Watson family had a major impact on films in it's infancy. Coy Sr. was the very first special affects person in the business. Coy Jr. was the first baby actor star. This book is beyond fascinating. If you want to know more about film history and back stories you'll never find in any other book, you must buy this!

Coy Watson's story of early Hollywood provides an excellent picture of what life was like when the movies were being born. Watson is part of the famed Watson family (Dad worked for the studios and even rigged Fairbanks flying carpet and all the kids had parts in the early films - the most famous Watson is brother Bobs who appeared in Boys Town as Pee Wee and On Borrowed Time as Pud). This book lets you know how informal things were in the early days of Hollywood and how films were made before the studios were taken over by the moguls. It is a great history of early Hollywood.

The Keystone Kid: Tales Of Early Hollywood is the personal autobiography and fascinating memoir of Coy Watson, Jr. Coy was Hollywood's first authentic child star, who started appearing in the popular "Keystone Cop" comedies before he could walk or talk. Black-and-white photographs add images and reminiscence to the warm, thoughtful, memories detailed on the pages. Within these pages are wonderful anecdotes of such "birth of Hollywood" greats as Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks, Fatty Arbuckle, Lon Chaney, Gloria Swanson, Tom Mix, Mabel Normand, Jackie Coggan, the Keystone Cops, Mack Swain, Lillan Gish, William S. Campbell, Mack Sennett, D.W. Griffith, King Vidor, Frank Capra, and others. The Keystone Kid is enthusiastically recommended reading for students and enthusiasts of early movies, cinema history, and especially for fans of Coy Watson, Jr.
