I learned more from this particular book in the first 30 minutes of reading it, than I did from three other resources on Marbling. I found answers in this book, I couldn't find anywhere else. Great photos of completed works and very simplifed instructions. One section focuses entirely on Preparing to Marble, tools for marbling, set-up, and furthermore is sectioned off by acrylics, watercolor, oil paints and tempera paints. Another section focuses on, patterns, tech. problems, special techniques, marbling on fabrics and resources. I would recommend this book first and foremost before all others.

This is a great introduction to paper marbling - the technique that produces those wonderful swirls, feathery patterns, and colored speckles on paper.

The book is divided very roughly into three parts. The first gives clear recipes and techniques for preparing the marbling media and paints, for choosing and preparing the paper or fabric, and for creating the patterns. The authors are sensitive to the needs of the home crafter, and generally avoid exotic materials and tools. The second part of the book is a visual catalog of marbled patterns with directions for making them yourself. The final section of the book suggests uses for the marbled paper or fabric - boxes, books, and lots of other applications.

This is a how-to book, so leaves without discussion of some topics. There's not a lot of historical discussion, even though marbling has been used for hundreds of years. It doesn't cover more advanced applications, including marbling the edges a book's block of pages. This is for the starting crafter, though, not for professionals or academicians.

This is an enjoyable intro to a very enjoyable craft. If you want to get started in marbling, I'd suggest starting here.

I ordered this book and tell ya what. It has the best information I've seen yet that indicates, through scientific research that THC helps stop or reduce pain...something the herb consumers have known for a long time. Interested in medicine such as Marinol for pain? Get this book, then give it to your doctor. THC Delta-9, is now schedule III, prescribable by doctors for "other than approved label use"....

I'd give it more stars!

A must have if you want to arm yourself with scientifically proven facts on this very controversially subject. I was so excited to find out what the Institute of Medicine had to say about cannabis, that I went out and told everyone I know. A true gem. Let's get this information out to everyone! And to all of those who helped put this book on the shelf, thank you! so much.

A useful reference about the facts on marijuana

Review Date: 2000-09-23
This book is the result of a $900,000 two year study of the known facts on marijuana, including a review of recent literature and interviews with patients. It was requested by "Drug Czar" McCaffrey after medical marijuana had become legal in California. No doubt McCaffrey was hoping the Institute of Medicine would come out against it. However, when finally released in March 1999, the Institute of Medicine report not only confirmed that marijuana has legitimate medical uses and is remarkably safe, it also demolished the myths that marijuana leads to harder drugs or that it causes "amotivational syndrome".

Did you know that 32% of all nicotine users develop a psychological dependency on their drug, as do 15% of all alcohol users versus only 9% of marijuana users? The book is full of useful facts like these.

If you want to get involved in the debate about what drug policy will serve us best you should read this book. Thank you, Mr McCaffrey :-)

I am part of the management team for a Community Mental Health Center in East Central Iowa. We are a not-for-profit organization, but in today's world of shrinking resources and tight money supplies, we are very cognizant of how we spend money. 'NetProfit,' by Kathleen Watson, has been very helpful in informing (and reminding) me of how to engage most effectively with other professionals, potential clients, and the community in general. Ms. Watson's style is clear, focused, and often humerous...a point not lost on those of us who deal with issues of mental health! I believe 'New Profit' can help others who work in service organizations to maximize their networking efforts.

It is an exciting time in American history to be involved in business. Listening to the evening news might make one conclude that any entrepreneurial enterprise is doomed for extinction. As a business educator, I am constantly amazed by the successes of budding entrepreneurs. They prove that, in spite of the denigrating comments about our economy, many can do quite well in business for themselves.

Educators try to demonstrate for students "why" being an entrepreneur works: it is pure capitalism at its best. "Living the American Dream" is possible, after all, if someone is willing to invest enough blood, sweat, and tears. To this educator's chagrin, however, most of what is taught is steeped in theory and reticent in substance. You want to be an entrepreneur - then you figure out how to become successful at business.

Apparently Kathleen Watson feels there is too much fluff available on the market. Her insightful book, Net Profit, provides an amazing resource that illustrates the need to be proficient in business networking. Not only does she write about what it takes to be successful-she provides "action steps" in a convenient check-the-block format. New entrepreneurs and existing business owners will be pleased by its practicality.

For instance, most business professionals have had the experience of being at a convention and enduring a conversation that has "run its course." Instead of languishing, or worse-cutting off a potential asset by thoughtless redirection - she empowers readers by providing convenient exit strategies. Actual, polite examples of things you might say that demonstrate your professionalism while honoring their humanity are presented. It is obvious that Ms. Watson writes from experience on how to get the most out of every networking opportunity.

Who needs this book: Anyone that wants to be successful in business. The title's play on words is fitting: want more profit-then network (for Net Profit). If your business is just beginning, or needs a "shot in the arm," you will not be disappointed by this resource.

This just might make it onto my required reading list for business education.

Armchair Interviews agrees.

The second covering houses and one of several in a series that highlight and describe the potential of American domestic architecture. It illustrates the possibilities and alternatives to the popular Martha Stewart/Bob Villa suburban style that has taken away so much recognition from American architects. Stunning photographs and simple detail drawings illustrate several different homes; each with it's own character.

If you are a do-it-yourself type or looking to hire an architect, this is a great place to start. This book will illustrate how a much a professionally designed house stands out from the Home Depot remodel or typical "custom" suburban home designed by a contractor.

If you are an architect, this is a great reference for residential projects illustrating rigorous use of materials and simplicity of concept, without the heavy "archispeak". It is also a great primer for potential clients, exposing them to the possibilities of design.

While not an architect or builder, I am browsing various ideas and methods. This is a great book for getting all the flavors from concrete prefab and rammed-earth to wood-frame with copper exteriors. In one case, a pre-fabbed house is given a timeline picture page showing the construction progress to finish. The pictures are nearly perfect, both encompassing and detailed with briefs that are pretty informative for their length. It's the information that you want with little else. Materials, construction methods and in most cases, cost. Excellent diagrams and cross-sections too. Worth it for someone who wants to build but isn't sure about the materials and methods they want to use, as well as sighting some good ideas.

Wonderful Book of Contemporary Homes

I love this book. Contemporary architecture is often misunderstood and misrepresented by focusing on the extreme or most useless of structures. In this book Ojeda takes us into some of the most beautiful, yet utilitarian, contemporary homes from the Arizona desert to Manhattan. He explains the design choices made and more importantly why they were made for the different designs. Included in the book are numerous beautiful photos of the different projects and architectural sketches of the projects.

This book would be a wonderful 'idea book' for an architect, or someone like me who is looking for ideas to give to an architect in preparation for building a new house. It is also a simply beautiful book to look at and learn from, both in design concepts specifically, and in building materials as well. I highly endorse this book as one of the best illustrated generalist books available on contemporary architecture. The ideas you will get for your own home alone are worth the cost.

This encyclopedic work about jazz in Holland will appeal to a wider readership than the title would ever suggest. Written with a novelist's eye for fine detail, and an appreciative ear for the rich nuances of jazz, Whitehead's book is a classic that belongs in every music-lover's library. One of the striking aspects of the book is the way Whitehead allows the musicians to speak for themselves - which is illuminating, and gives the book an accessibility for anyone interested in the creative process of music. Excellent book.

Kevin Whitehead's New Dutch Swing is a tour de force of jazz scene writing, readily accessible to the cognescenti and the casual alike. Having immersed himself in the Amsterdam jazz community for several years, Whitehead transports us across the pond and deposits us in smoky Dutch clubs where some of the world's most creative music swirls around our heads. His depictions of the characters are especially good, and after a page or two the performers come alive as people, not just as musicians. Drawing on his extensive knowledge as a (sometimes controversial) jazz critic, Whitehead puts the vibrant Dutch improv scene into global perspective. Excellent reading; highly recommended.

This one is better than most of the books in its category, although by far is not one of those "most complete guides". Good writing style, Real life examples. Type of camera, film and exposure settings are listed next most of the example pictures. What this book has that others don't, is a pretty good overview of digital input and output(especially printers and scanners), and how it's related to "film" photography. Highly recommended for beginners.

The author of this contemporaray photo manual is not caught up in the technology, rather he uses a common sense approach to new technology. The book starts off with the thought process and preaches conventional rules of pictorial composition, instead of the technical jargon that so many books of this type contain. One has to go no further than the book's introduction to realize that Carucci bridges the gap between art and technique. As for the images, I forgot for a moment that this was an instructional manual. The artwork is first rate. That's not to say that the writing is less than clear and informative. I especially liked the child/statue composite. I recommend this book to anyone interested in digital photography.

This book addresses a realistic approach to the current world of photography. It's not just digital cameras and computers: it's film, illumination and composition. Carucci feels that certain ideas are necessary to produce a good image regardless of the technology. The book is well written, though it seems that some of the passages, especially at the chapter beginnings, are a bit too creative. The book doesn't read like a textbook. Instead it's friendly, especially to the newbie. His introduction is poignant and the images are incredible. The kid turned into a statue is both shocking and wonderful.

I'm a member of a Sherlock Holmes Club and we've often wondered about Dr. John Watson's first marriage to an American woman. This new book, No Ordinary Terror, answers that question. Or at least provides one viable answer.

Although this new book can't be called a Sherlockian pastiche, all fellow devotees will find this mystery a fine addition to their collection. Even the great detective makes a brief appearance at a critical juncture.

FYI-this first in the Watson Twins mystery series concerns a murder investigation conducted by the children of Dr. Watson. They learned their craft from Sherlock, their so-called uncle. Now an adult, the daughter, Emma, is a physician and suffragette. The son is a maverick artist of growing fame. The plot is very involving and will take you on a roller coaster ride from the beginning. Try as you may, you'll never discover the murderer until the end.

Kudos from a 50-year Sherlockian. I'm happily hooked on the Watson Twins.

No Ordinary Terror is a detectie story set during the time of political turmoil leading up to World War I. Meticulously researched and presented, with an almost classical knack for literary grace, No Ordinary Terror follows Richard and Emma Watson, twin children imbued with the heritage of the legendary Dr. John H. Watson who served as friend, confidant, and assistant to Sherlock Holmes. These amateur detectives must follow deadly leads from the heights of aristocracy into the depths of the dirtiest slums, in hope not only saving their friend, but England itself. No Ordinary Terror is set in 1910 London, but the plot takes you to northern Scotland and a mining area of Wales before it culminates in a surprising and unexpected climax in London. The main characters, the adult twin son and daughter of Dr. John H. Watson, are well developed and Van Dyke's understanding of the era is evident in every detail of this engaging and well researched mystery. But it was the plot and the author's ability to tell an exciting tale that kept me turning pages until midnihght. I eagerly await the second in the Watson Twins mystery series.

I have always enjoyed Samuel Abt's articles on cycling in the International Herald-Tribune, so figuring out that I would enjoy his collection of articles in Off to the Races didn't require a great leap of faith. Still, I'm not sure I could have guessed that I'd enjoy it quite as much as I did.

Mr. Abt's keen eye and feel for words rarely produce spectacular results but they almost always capture the heart of the subject they are examining. What I didn't expect was the way reading all of these essays as a collection would work together to create a larger picture, the way that some talented designers can take a collection of paintings or magazine covers and organize them in such a way that they create a unique portrait when viewed from an appropriate distance.

The portrait this collection produces spans a 25-year period that starts with the tail end of the career of Eddy Merckx, cycling's Babe Ruth (if I can be permitted a baseball analogy...), and ending well into the era of its latest star, Lance Armstrong, the sport's Hank Aaron (...or maybe two of them). In between, all of the giants of the sport -- Greg LeMond, Miguel Indurain, Francesco Moser, Sean Kelly, Claudio Ciapucci, Laurent Fignon, Bernard Hinault, Chris Boardman, Jan Ullrich, Mario Cipollini, and the recently deceased Marco Pantani -- are presented as Mr. Abt saw them at the time, and not with the sometimes distorting benefit of hindsight. Add to that a host of profiles of other would-be champions, flash-in-the-pan talents, and colorful racers and you have a collection of articles that belongs on any cycling fan's bookshelf.

The photography, unfortunately, is not what it could be considering the talent of photojournalist Graham Watson and the photogenic nature of the sport. Unless Mr. Watson inexplicably withheld the crème of his personal collection, I can only blame this on some nameless editor who ran great photos too small, and who skipped what must have been some extraordinary shots from Mr. Watson's portfolio in lieu of some rather ordinary alternatives. But the writing is the real reason to buy Off to the Races, so don't let the unexceptional choice of photos cause you to miss this highly enjoyable volume.

Samuel Abt is the best!

I knew before I opened this book that I would like it as it is nothing more than a collection of many of his coverage articles over the years with the International Herald Tribune. I appreciate his candidness in sharing his early feelings on Bicycle Racing, and how his wife is responsible for getting him involved. That was a nudge that has given me years of pleasure reading his articles when they make it into The New York Times. The stories in this book were all new to me, and they further demonstrate the access to the riders that Abt has, and his ability to tell a cycling story that anyone could love.

I was hooked immediately, and this author has a relationship with the riders that other journalists simply do not have, and therefore they cannot touch the vibrancy of the stories. Simply outstanding book.
