I discovered this book quite by accident while I was a teaching intern. It knocked me, a middle-aged math-phobe, right off my feet, as suddenly I could understand not only binary numbers, but their relationship to electronic technology. Watson presents the information slowly and sequentially, from lengths of string to Cuisenaire rods, with exercises that manifest the principles as you go along, 'til--lo and behold!--you're writing messages in binary code. While this book is intended for an elementary audience, the only real way you can tell that is from the illustrator's style. The language of the book is simple, direct, and useful at any level. I hope some smart publisher picks this book up and reissues it--it's great.

A MUST READ for Anyone Going into the Corporate World
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-01-02
To put it simply the corporate world is a place where "truthiness" reigns. In the corporation, the motto may be Honesty and Hardwork but what they don't tell you is that this doesn't apply to everyone. For African Americans we're taught that if you work hard, go to school, and get a nice job that everything will be all right and you'll live a good life. Well, yes and no. This is only part of the equation. Unfortunately, if you don't have someone to mentor you in the fallacy of the corporate meritocracy , the petty pecking order, and the small daily humiliations you may endure, then you'll be in store for a serious culture shock.

So the book says, yes, work hard but there is a significant amount of cultural nonsense that you may experience or witness. It gives examples of people who have chosen to stay in the corporate arena and their perspective and motivations for continuing in this career field - largely attributed to their compensation.

By no means is it a negative, "whoa is me" pity party on paper. This is an intelligently written book that all minorities should read to get a primer before or during their corporate careers. If open minded, majority readers should take a look at it to view what is going on from another perspective.

This book is not a manual to surviving the corporate world as an African American. It is a collection of observations that explores the, "Why is this happening?". In effect, it will let you know that you are not alone in your own observations within the corporate world. While reading it, I laughed out loud at some of the examples. Largely, because I have experienced what was being written or witnessed it first hand as it happened to someone else. Though the book was written in the early 1980s, it proves that theres "Some things have changed and some things have not."

I highly recommend this easy to read and understand book on a very complex and politically incorrect topic.

After reading this book it should serve as the catylst for further reading on the up and downside to the pursuant of the ambigious corporate atmosphere. This book deals ardently with the pyscho-social dynamics that affect people of color although written in 1981 it remains still relevant today. This is a must read for any young or seasoned corporate professional. More importantly "People of Conscience" whether of color or without should READ!!!!!!!!!!

This book is truly enlightening and is a source of light to let me know that the struggle is far from over. ALL BLACKS PLEASE READ THIS BOOK! FIND A COPY YOU MUST BE ENLIGHTENED.

This happy, upbeat book clearly and simply teaches the technique of buttonhole applique, as well as providing a background for this unique style of quilt block. Enhanced by many full color photos and full sized patterns, it will be treasured as a favorite. After purchasing this book, I was please to find the sequel, "Willowood", which takes the quilter further into the adventures of buttonhole.

Discipleship is not just about memorizing verses, praying with a prayer partner, or participating in every church event scheduled by your church. Watson pointed me toward true life-affecting discipleship-both rare and shunned by modern Christians.

My sister bought me this book about twenty years ago. I have read it many times at different stages in my Christian walk and always find fresh material on which to grow. This book made David Watson my favorite Christian author.

This book is challenging to anyone at any stage. It looks not only at how to follow Jesus, but why and in what forums. His call, not only to the individual, but also the individual to the community is accurate and essential.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough. If you want to start a disciplship program or study, this is the text!

Many authors stop short of brining the full measure of accountability. Watson brings you to the place where true life changing decisions are made and encourages you to complete the process (no matter how it may challenge you). Watson is a modern day Watchman Nee.

I have read many books on woodworking, The Complete Woodworker's Companion is the only reference book I own. Roger Holmes has written a very concise and relevant book on the fundamentals of woodworking; including tools, wood preparation, construction methods, and finishing. The galleries of modern masterpieces are just as interesting and educational as the chapters on woodworking. Every beginning and intermediate woodworker should read this book cover to cover and then read it again.

This was the first woodworking how-to book I bought and it has been very informative and I reference it often. With many helpful photos, the author does a good job of explaining all of the basic woodworking fundamentals (how to 4-square wood, how to cut joints, different projects, etc.). There is also a balance between using machines and hand tools. Recommended.

Larry Brown on Larry Brown

Review Date: 2008-08-31
The evolution of one of America's best writers in the last 20 years is on full display in this wonderful book. It is a series of interviews over the course of almost 20 years that give an amazing insight into the process Brown employed to write his stories. The over riding theme for his writing seems to be putting his characters through some extreme difficulties (or "sandbagging" them) and then seeing how they react. He does this , in my opinion , as well as or better than almost any writer working today. So, if you have read all that he wrote before he died, and want more Larry Brown, this book is well worth the read.

A Nice Extra

I suppose I'm a bit of a Larry Brown nut; I've read most everything he's penned, and this is a nice addition. It tells about how "it" all happened for him. A recommended "page-turner" for any up-and-coming writer.

Review Date: 2007-08-08
This collection of interviews was compiled after Larry Brown's untimely death, when he was only in his early 50's. Though Brown has left us with several books, Jay Watson wanted to honor the man behind the words by putting together some insightful interviews. The wonderful thing to read in these interviews is Brown's work ethic when it comes to writing. By his own estimates, when he was 29, Larry Brown decided that he wanted to become a writer and create books.

Rather than simply sit in classes and workshops and discuss writing, Brown, quite simply, wrote. By his estimates, he wrote close to 100 short stories and 5 novels before he wrote anything worth publishing (or, more accurately, before he could get objective enough about his own work to see that he was finally writing fiction that was worth the attention of others).

If you are looking for a collection of philosophy on writing, you aren't going to find it here like you might in Bledsoe's Getting Naked With Harry Crews, but that's because of how Larry Brown was as a writer--he saw the craft of being a writer as exactly that, a craft, and he worked at it regularly and didn't muse upon it for the benefit of wide-eyed newbies and hopefuls (as well as the benefit of his savings account). Brown wrote, and he took that, quite simply, as his livelihood, just the way he took being a fireman and a forklift operator in a stove factory as his livelihood. This book is mostly inspirational in reading about someone with a sound work ethic rather than a postulator on the art of writing.

Not that Brown is short of any gems. A true student of his craft, Brown is able to quote masters like Flannery O'Connor, but is also able to talk about the essence of tragedy and how his writing works out towards tragedy despite his best efforts, for his grandest search is to look for the truth of humans and his characters. A wonderful piece here is an excerpt from the documentary The Rough South of Larry Brown, an interview with Larry Brown and his wife. Here, we get to see another side of the soft-spoken Brown.

This is deifnitely a must-read for any aspiring writer. It may prove a little depressing to see how much Brown had to work before he could write publishable work, but a touch of reality just the same. Larry Brown will be missed.

Great Insight to Southern Author

This collection of interviews with the author throughout his lifetime is a candid look at the man and his methods. Each interview provides a unique look at the poor background Brown came from and how he taught himself to write over seven years. The origins of many of his novels and stort stories are discussed in his humble North Mississippi manner. He tells both stories of his early struggles and the later success and awards that he's received. I've read a lot of books for aspiring authors on the craft of writing and this was the best by far. He just tells it straight. If you're intrested in Larry, Southern Lit or just what it takes to make it as a writer this book is for you.

She is also an avid outdoors woman who regularly submits recipes for the In-Fisherman magazine and has been featured on the In-Fisherman televison series many times.

The recipes are simple to prepare and easy to follow. An excellent addtion to anyone's library of books dealing with the outdoors.

This book's recipes are fabulous, easy to prepare and family friendly as well. The photography and layout are wonderful. When paging through this book you will feel inspired to try every dish. Another aspect of this cookbook that I really like is that most of the ingredients are readily available and even though it has a gormet "feel" to it, the recipes are easily prepared. Although I've always felt I'm a pretty good cook, I've struggled with confidence in the "fish department". Now that I have this book I feel much more assured of a good outcome. I've also adapted some of the recipes to ocean fish and they work great.
In-fisherman and chef watson did a great job with this!

If you're looking for a book of a photographer who single-mindedly captures fashion, portraiture, landscape and still life flawlessly with his unique style, Albert Watson's Cyclops is the book for you. Included in the book is a brief overview of Watson the man who since birth has had only sight in one eye and has been given the gift of dazzling every other eye known to man. In the interior you can indulge yourself with black and white photographs that can instantly give rise to a feeling of sensuality, pain and pleasure. Whether it be celebrities or artifacts Watson manipulates the subject to create a vision only he can see and we can enjoy and recognize as his signature style. The book is a bit small but beautifully made.

When I first saw the book, I was transfixed. I must have spent quite a number of hours going through the pages, standing up, the world dissolving around me. My particular favorite is one picture of Gary Oldman lying in a coffin. It captured him perfectly. I don't know much about photography, but the beauty of his works is that it can be understood and loved by anyone - there is a human association within every shot. For a while I was reluctant to buy it - the price was a bit too much for me, but I kept on returning to the bookstore to see it, taking a half an hour bus ride each time at the other side of the city. I grew restless when I didn't take the ritual visit. Eventually I did get it - and I finally feel complete. He captured perfection.

An unsurmountable piece of work by Albert Watson.
