Was absolutely delighted when we received this book. This is an artist who is so ripe for a reappraisal! Waterhouse managed to pull off a genuine and moving romantic vision. The writing is thoughtful and spirited. The reproductions are first rate. Can't imagine anyone would fail to love this one.

The best book out there on J.W. Waterhouse!

This is the best book I have found on J.W. Waterhouse. Not only does this book talk about the painter's life, but more importantly, each of J.W .Waterhouse's paintings are described in very full detail (eg: OPHELIA).

I was so intrigued by reading about Waterhouses' pictures, because the author of this wonderful book (ie: PETER TRIPPI) elaborated in great detail about each work of Art, by contrasting and comparing Waterhouses' paintings to other famous paintings and sculptures (eg: Bourne Jones from the 1800's, and also many famous Italian 1400-th Century Artists) .

The author has attempted, (& with great success, I may add), to show how Waterhouse was influenced by past Rapheaelite Artists and also by some of the other famous first-phase Pre-Raheaelite English Artists.

Each synopsis, of each Waterhouse painting is quite amazing and like no other interpretation that I have read on this famous late-Pre-Raphaelite Artist.

The repro-photos of Waterhouse's works are amazing, -----showing such wonderful details and colors.

Would love to have ordered the hardcover for a coffee table book but this one does just fine for the cost and over-seas shipping it would have taken for the hardcover. Lots of information on J W Waterhouse and great pictures. It even has some of his less known works and pictures that you can't find prints for. A true keep sake and treasure for those who are interested in this artist and his time. Oh, and a few of the house guests, students, have even asked to borrow the book. First table book to have created some interesting conversations.

This is a wonderful and moving story and what's even better is it's true.

This book tells the story of the creative genius Waterhouse Hawkins who paints and creates life size models of dinosaurs way back in the 1800s.

It's a beautiful picture book, I highly recommend it.

This beautifully written and illustrated book is the true story of Waterhouuse Hawkins, an English artist who brought dusty bones to life in sculptures of dinosaurs. The text is suited for reading aloud to young dinosaur lovers, as a self read by third graders and beyond, and as an addition to any dinosaur lovers bookshelf. It is a good book for those interested in art and history as well. A perfect gift.

Amazing story for the dinosaur lover. My 7 year old son kept barrowing this book from his school so much that I decided he needed his own copy and now he wants to go to England to see Mr. Hawkins' Dinosaurs for himself.

I am a student at West Virginia State College University. I am in Mr. Samples, Children's Literature class. I chose to read this book as an honor book for a caldecott winner. I am not a huge dinosaur fan, but I loved this book. It made it even more fabulous that it is all based on a true story. The pictures were just as great as the book.

Occasionally, from time to time, I like to trick little children. And as a children's librarian in a public library, I have plenty of time and opportunity to do so. So when I'm in the right mood and I feel particularly devilish, I mosey on over to the biography section of the library and ever-so-casually pull out "The Dinosaurs of Waterhouse Hawkins". After determining that no one has seen me, I then amble over to the picture book area and prominently display the book. The bait now laid, I go back to my desk and wait in anticipation. It doesn't take long. Soon the attractive cover of the book (showing a man holding a dinosaur model with a gigantic dinosaur head looming behind him) catches the eye of some wayward traipsing tot. The child will look at it, squeal gleefully, and pluck the item from the shelf without so much as a howdy-doo. My job complete, I sit back and soak in just how clever I am. You see, the kid doesn't know it yet, but I've tricked `em. They thought they were finding just another of the thousands of millions of dinosaur books out there WHEN IN FACT this book is different. It is a highly educational biography of the man who helped bring dinosaurs to the forefront of the human imagination. The book may well be many a child's first biography for this very reason. So while they think they're getting another dino book, they are in fact getting an entirely different critter altogether. It's an incredibly satisfying feeling to get a child to read something quite as good and original as this particular book. I do not regret my actions in the least.

Author Barbara Kerley explains in her afterword where she got the gumption to write about Waterhouse Hawkins in the first place. She was flipping through a book of dinosaurs one day when she came across a most peculiar picture. In it sat a group of refined late 1800s gentlemen having a formal dinner. In the belly of a dinosaur. Further research yielded a name and a fascinating story. Waterhouse Hawkins was born in London in 1807. He grew up with an interest in animalia, but with the discovery of dinosaur bones he quickly shifted his interests. As an artist, Hawkins worked diligently to create true to life full-sized dinosaur models. Though we today look at them with a critical eye (they had some real innate flaws to them) at the time they were considered the cutting edge of scientific vision. Hawkins grew in prominence (in no small part due to the aforementioned let's-eat-dinner-in-a-dinosaur idea) and even created a group of them for the grand opening of the Crystal Palace at Sydenham Park. Unfortunately, once Hawkins moved to America he was bound to come into contact with that nefarious New York politican, the corruptous of the corrupt, "Boss" Tweed. Though Hawkins had been given funding to construct a museum of dinosaurs in Central Park, Tweed diverted funds and (adding injury to insult) probably hired a group of goons to destroy Hawkins' models. But did our intrepid expatriate give in even then? No, sir! He went on to create the development of life on Earth at Princeton and made dinosaurs for the Smithsonian. By the time he died he'd lived a rich and wonderful life.

Barbara Kerley backs up all her interesting Hawkins info with a remarkable Author's Note section at the end of the book encompassing the models, the artist, Tweed, the Crystal Palace, as well as illustrator Brian Selznick's works. And the text is remarkably interesting. In fact, it closes by pointing out that because Boss Tweed's goons buried many of Hawkins' models, they may still be located somewhere deep beneath Central Park to this day. Brian Selznick is just as laudable an artist in this venture though. First of all, the book is presented as a kind of 1800s document. The title page is part announcement to a theatrical presentation part scholarly text. At the end of the book we can see the original menu feasted upon by Hawkins and his scientific cronies in the belly of one of his models. The book is perhaps most remarkable because of its dark moments. And it is here that Selznick really shines. Our encounter with Boss Tweed shows a gray formal portrait of the man with watery malicious eyes. After the destruction of his creations there's a remarkable two-page spread of Hawkins holding his head in sorrow in the midst of complete and utter destruction. The next pages show a rainy windswept Central Park with a single black figure making his way across the expanse. Heck! There's even a section at the back of the book showing how Hawkins once drew his dinos and how we know they look today.

The most difficult task of any biographical picture book is make the subject both interesting and factual. Kerley and Selznick have done this with aplomb. And unlike some life stories transferred to a mere 48 pages or so, this book has a distinctive rise and fall to the action. All in all it's a remarkable story in an attractive package that any small child could instantly take to. One of the best picture book biographies I have ever had the delight to read. A must-have for any dino-addled child.

Yes, I Can by Devon Harris is inspiring not only for children, but also for adults. The book is an easy read. The layout of the book, with great illustrations, will help to keep the children interested. Devon Harris presents his story in poetry form which keeps the reader captivated. Devon talked about the desire of the Jamaican bobsled team to enter the Olympics and do well, and also about the difficulties the team encountered. However, with teamwork and a positive attitude they got to the finish line. The story is one of encouragement for people who are afraid to step out of their comfort zone and follow their dreams. The story will help children to realize that with hard work and determination, they can achieve what they want .I highly recommend this book, go get a copy for the kids.

You may remember the Jamaican bobsled team from seeing them in the Calgary Winter Olympics in 1988 or seen the movie based upon these events, Cool Runnings starring the late John Candy.

The tale is really quite inspirational. Four individuals (Devon Harris, Michael White, Dudley Stokes, and Christian Stokes) had Olympics dreams. Since the four men had decided to compete as bobsledders, most people thought that they were a joke. Despite this, second hand equipment, endless fundraising, getting used to the cold, and endless training, the team members never gave up. Not only did the team compete at the Olympics but they won a special place in our hearts.

In Yes, I Can!, Devon Harris shares this inspirational story with children who are much too young to remember the Calgary Olympics. This is one of those books that I suggest that a parent read along with the kids as some of the words are a bit challenging. Also, I think that parents who saw the team on the news will enjoy sharing their memories of these events with their child.

This book is great! Devon Harris tells his true story of the Jamaican Bobsled team's Olympic quest. The story is easy to read with a poetic rhythm. The illustrations enhance the story, showing the contrast between, fun in the sun on a Jamaican beach and the extreme cold, icy, snowy conditions of Calgary. I would recommend this book to anyone who dares to dream big, anyone who is faced with a challenge and needs a little push.

It teaches both children and adults the importance of staying true to your heart, your goals and what winning really means. Winning is not measured in a 1st place prize rather in self-esteem, courage and teamwork. The book is colorful, energetic and easy to read. Definitely add this one to your collection.

I received the John William Waterhouse 2008 calendar for Christmas and can't wait for New Year's Day to come, so I can put it up. Pomegranate, a major publisher of art products, has outdone themselves with their calendar devoted to the beloved Victorian artist who painted in the style of the Pre-Raphaelites. The prints of Waterhouse's paintings featured here are superbly bright and true in quality; I have seen other prints of THISBE, but none as fine as Pomegranate's. This 2008 edition of the calendar is special as it includes some of Waterhouse's most popular paintings (OPHELIA and THE LADY OF SHALOTT, which adorns the cover) as well as some of his least frequently reproduced paintings (THE ENCHANTED GARDEN, A SONG OF SPRINGTIME, and JULIET). When the year is up, I plan to have a couple of these rarer prints removed from the calendar, then matted and framed; they will be valuable additions to my Waterhouse print collection.

The title, year, and current location of each painting is printed at the bottom of each month-page. The John William Waterhouse calendar will enhance your wall just as a framed painting would. It is truly a work of art, and I look forward to receiving it each Christmas!

I've admired J.W. Waterhouse's ethereally beautiful paintings for a number of years. This calendar is the latest in a line of lovely productions. I'm not an artist or an art historian, but I like Waterhouse's paintings because they typically feature beautiful scenery and people and suggest high emotional involvement. The calendar's compilers have done a good job of finding different paintings from year to year, so that one is not faced with the same depiction very often.

The list of consequences "when bad things happen to good projects" or What-NOT-To-Do is worth the price of the book. I wish I had read this book before starting my 6+ years as a consultant helping organizations to improve. This book presents most of the lessons that I've learned during those years and gives quite a few additional ideas on organization change.

Don't let the garish cover art distract you. This is a solidly good book, which I regularly recommend to my clients. Of course, I can't vouch for the Price Waterhouse consulting group's ability to get clients to change successfully or whether they even follow their own advice. I just know that I do apply the best ideas in this book (plus some of my own) in my consulting practice.

Fates, Flowers takes us on an incredible journey into the mind and life of Sarah, a middle-aged British woman living in NY city. She is not someone you would admire or wish to befriend and yet, as a reader, you are drawn ever more deeply into her world where you find yourself by turns fascinated, amused, and repelled by her experiences, her inner life, and how she navigates her world. The clarity with which she is portrayed through her thoughts, feelings, and many quirks brings her alive. You may love her or hate her in all her humanness--perhaps both at the same time--but you do not feel indifferent towards her; you are intimately involved with her as you read--a testament to Waterhouse's skill in character development.
At times macabre, and yet with underlying wry humor throughout, the novel takes us on a powerful journey through our essential humanity to the edge of sanity where we wonder what is real.
Once immersed, I couldn't tear myself away. Waterhouse has a brilliant and keen mind and I look forward to reading more of his work in the future.

Sara On My Mind
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2006-12-12
Sometimes readers actually do expect novels to offer creative insights into our shared humanity, but even serious readers are often reluctant to admit this. They become jaded when their expectations are consistently unmet by books that offer fluffy entertainment but very little substance. Well, readers of the world, take heart! With "Fates, Flowers" by Matthew Waterhouse, you have an opportunity to read, enjoy, emote, AND think.

After you've read this novel and put it down, the protagonist, Sara Smith, will stay with you, not just because of her superficial quirks and foibles but because of her complicated but wonderful humanity. This is character development at its best. Days after reading this novel you might find yourself wondering how Sara Smith, a middle-aged English woman in New York City, would perceive the life that you are living. And having Sara in your head is not easy. In a typically brilliant but sharp passage, Waterhouse provides us with Sara's idea of heaven, "Sara's heaven of nudity and lust seemed to her resonant of life, of energy, of animal need. Animal need she could like. Dreamy cloudlands, these were the bloodless wishes of those who had hopelessly failed in the human skins which encased everything they were."

Like her sense of heaven, Sara's sense of reality could brook no dreamy cloudland either, be it frontier land, fantasy land, tomorrow land, or anything else in the antiseptic, ideal world according to Disney. Sara's no-holds-barred contempt for all things Disney is wildly and comically refreshing, but it may doom Waterhouse's brilliant effort to guaranteed obscurity. We all live in a dreamland where there is no world of literature separate from corporate control. So another compelling reason to buy this book is so that writing can continue to be one of the last refuges for the rebel.

The story line is intriguing with a good layer of surprises. We could summarize it here or even reveal it completely but that's not polite. But this reader is so taken by Waterhouse's engaging style that the plot seemed almost incidental. Of course it's unfair to compare a novelist's first effort with the style of an icon, but reading "Fates, Flowers", puts one in mind of Vonnegut. There are no unnecessary words or convoluted sentences to clutter up the narrative, yet meaning is not compromised. Let's call it art. Read "Fates, Flowers".

A Solid Overview of the Biblical Teaching of Eternal Security
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-09-01
Waterhouse provides a thorough study of the Bible verses that support eternal security and also deals with seemingly-contrary passages. For instance, he points out that the vine-and-branches teaching of Christ (John 15) applies primarily to the apostles, not Christians in general.

He points out that, if eternal security is not true, then Christ's atoning death was inadequate, that He had failed as intercessor and advocate, and that promises in the Bible of knowing the fact of one's salvation are untrue. Also, the sealing ministry of the Holy Spirit (2 Corinthians 1:22) must be understood in light of the fact that, in the ancient world, a seal signified ownership, authority, approval, and perfection.

We've all heard the arguments related to professing Christians who later fell away. But such arguments from experience can be turned around. If the verses in Hebrews mean that a person who falls away loses salvation, then they also mean that he cannot possibly regain his salvation ("once lost, always lost"). This, of course, is contradicted by experience. People who once professed Christ and then fell away often return to Christ later in life.

Waterhouse, in common with virtually all those who discuss Hebrews 6:1-12 pro- and con- relative to eternal security, suppose that it is God who doesn't renew those who have fallen away to repentance. In actuality, the early church understood this verse to refer to church discipline: the church's authority to excommunicate and to lift the excommunication. This verse meant that the church should excommunicate the apostates and never allow them to publicly repent before the church and be restored to fellowship (notably those who drift to and away from Christianity according to personal convenience). It had nothing to do with the salvation of such an individual--a matter before God, not the church.

Of course, this relatively brief book cannot cover all aspects of the doctrine of eternal security. For instance, it has falsely been argued that this doctrine is a recent invention--that no one in the early church believed in eternal security. In fact, some did, including Ambrosiaster and Jerome. The latter affirmed that, even those who trusted Christ but later sinned and fell away, will eventually be saved.

Biblical Teaching on the Eternal Salvation of the Believer

Review Date: 2007-07-03
In "Blessed Assurance" Dr. Steven Waterhouse encourages the believer to search the scriptures to understand the clear Bible truth on the subject of the eternal security of the believer.

Because a person's view on eternal security determines his whole outlook and motivation for their walk as a Christian it is important to understand this important doctrine. Dr. Waterhouse presents both side of the issue with a strong defense of the doctrine of eternal security. He explains in detail problem passages that are often used in debating the security of the believer.

This compact book is an ideal tool for pastors, Bible teachers to use guiding those individuals insecure in their faith. A solid understanding of the subject of this book will help the believer to experience God's fullness in their Christian walk.

This book is the answer for those who live under the heavy load, worry, and downright fear (perhaps even suicidal) of thinking they are going to lose their salvation, wonder just how they lose it, and wonder how they ever get it back if they could lose it. Blessed Assurance addresses all the "problem passages" that the perseverance folks use as support for refuting eternal security, showing that each and every one can and should be interpreted as actually supporting the security of the believer.

This book is great! Its a great coffee table book or a nice piece to briefly cover the topic of sustainability in Minnesota. It gives brief overviews of individuals and families that are incorporating community building and sustainability into their lives, business practices, business models, and architecture. My hat's off to the authors of this book and to the people whom made this book possible, the many subjects of this book.

Very Informative

Born in El Paso, raised nearby, lived another 20 years there: I can testify that these are wonderful recipes. Also, the information about the area is accurate and interesting. I own two printings of this book, and have bought it for friends and daughters-in-law (so they would know how to cook for my sons!). All in all, a fine publication.

Fabulous cookbook - withstands the test of time!

I've had my copy of Seasoned with Sun since 1978 and am purchasing this version for my 3 grown daughters. This cookbook has grown up with our family (I was raised in El Paso but moved away in 1979) and am thrilled that two family "must-haves" are still in - Jim's Carrot Cake and Sour Cream Banana Pecan Cake.
This book has made me look good for years - now it's my daughters' turn!

Terrific Southwestern Cookbook, also great general recipes

This must be the BEST Junior League Cookbook around. It is beautiful, with wonderful Southwestern illustrations. It's layout is unique and easy to use with great tips and hints. All the recipes were thoroughly tested by local families. But the best part of all is the great Southwestern (Mexican) recipes that are easy to follow - no weird ingredients unless reasonable substitutes are listed. And they are absolutely delicious. This is a cut above. It sounds like I'm in Junior League, but I'm not - I just LOVE the cookbook. I found it here because I want to send one to a friend in another part of the country. It's a real favorite of mine.
