The best book out there on J.W. Waterhouse! Review Date: 2007-08-05
This is the best book I have found on J.W. Waterhouse. Not only does this book talk about the painter's life, but more importantly, each of J.W .Waterhouse's paintings are described in very full detail (eg: OPHELIA).
I was so intrigued by reading about Waterhouses' pictures, because the author of this wonderful book (ie: PETER TRIPPI) elaborated in great detail about each work of Art, by contrasting and comparing Waterhouses' paintings to other famous paintings and sculptures (eg: Bourne Jones from the 1800's, and also many famous Italian 1400-th Century Artists) .
The author has attempted, (& with great success, I may add), to show how Waterhouse was influenced by past Rapheaelite Artists and also by some of the other famous first-phase Pre-Raheaelite English Artists.
Each synopsis, of each Waterhouse painting is quite amazing and like no other interpretation that I have read on this famous late-Pre-Raphaelite Artist.
The repro-photos of Waterhouse's works are amazing, -----showing such wonderful details and colors.

This book tells the story of the creative genius Waterhouse Hawkins who paints and creates life size models of dinosaurs way back in the 1800s.

Everybody do the dinosaurReview Date: 2005-02-13
Author Barbara Kerley explains in her afterword where she got the gumption to write about Waterhouse Hawkins in the first place. She was flipping through a book of dinosaurs one day when she came across a most peculiar picture. In it sat a group of refined late 1800s gentlemen having a formal dinner. In the belly of a dinosaur. Further research yielded a name and a fascinating story. Waterhouse Hawkins was born in London in 1807. He grew up with an interest in animalia, but with the discovery of dinosaur bones he quickly shifted his interests. As an artist, Hawkins worked diligently to create true to life full-sized dinosaur models. Though we today look at them with a critical eye (they had some real innate flaws to them) at the time they were considered the cutting edge of scientific vision. Hawkins grew in prominence (in no small part due to the aforementioned let's-eat-dinner-in-a-dinosaur idea) and even created a group of them for the grand opening of the Crystal Palace at Sydenham Park. Unfortunately, once Hawkins moved to America he was bound to come into contact with that nefarious New York politican, the corruptous of the corrupt, "Boss" Tweed. Though Hawkins had been given funding to construct a museum of dinosaurs in Central Park, Tweed diverted funds and (adding injury to insult) probably hired a group of goons to destroy Hawkins' models. But did our intrepid expatriate give in even then? No, sir! He went on to create the development of life on Earth at Princeton and made dinosaurs for the Smithsonian. By the time he died he'd lived a rich and wonderful life.
Barbara Kerley backs up all her interesting Hawkins info with a remarkable Author's Note section at the end of the book encompassing the models, the artist, Tweed, the Crystal Palace, as well as illustrator Brian Selznick's works. And the text is remarkably interesting. In fact, it closes by pointing out that because Boss Tweed's goons buried many of Hawkins' models, they may still be located somewhere deep beneath Central Park to this day. Brian Selznick is just as laudable an artist in this venture though. First of all, the book is presented as a kind of 1800s document. The title page is part announcement to a theatrical presentation part scholarly text. At the end of the book we can see the original menu feasted upon by Hawkins and his scientific cronies in the belly of one of his models. The book is perhaps most remarkable because of its dark moments. And it is here that Selznick really shines. Our encounter with Boss Tweed shows a gray formal portrait of the man with watery malicious eyes. After the destruction of his creations there's a remarkable two-page spread of Hawkins holding his head in sorrow in the midst of complete and utter destruction. The next pages show a rainy windswept Central Park with a single black figure making his way across the expanse. Heck! There's even a section at the back of the book showing how Hawkins once drew his dinos and how we know they look today.
The most difficult task of any biographical picture book is make the subject both interesting and factual. Kerley and Selznick have done this with aplomb. And unlike some life stories transferred to a mere 48 pages or so, this book has a distinctive rise and fall to the action. All in all it's a remarkable story in an attractive package that any small child could instantly take to. One of the best picture book biographies I have ever had the delight to read. A must-have for any dino-addled child.

Yes, I Can!Review Date: 2007-07-18
The tale is really quite inspirational. Four individuals (Devon Harris, Michael White, Dudley Stokes, and Christian Stokes) had Olympics dreams. Since the four men had decided to compete as bobsledders, most people thought that they were a joke. Despite this, second hand equipment, endless fundraising, getting used to the cold, and endless training, the team members never gave up. Not only did the team compete at the Olympics but they won a special place in our hearts.
In Yes, I Can!, Devon Harris shares this inspirational story with children who are much too young to remember the Calgary Olympics. This is one of those books that I suggest that a parent read along with the kids as some of the words are a bit challenging. Also, I think that parents who saw the team on the news will enjoy sharing their memories of these events with their child.

Don't let the garish cover art distract you. This is a solidly good book, which I regularly recommend to my clients. Of course, I can't vouch for the Price Waterhouse consulting group's ability to get clients to change successfully or whether they even follow their own advice. I just know that I do apply the best ideas in this book (plus some of my own) in my consulting practice.

Brilliant black comedyReview Date: 2007-01-08
At times macabre, and yet with underlying wry humor throughout, the novel takes us on a powerful journey through our essential humanity to the edge of sanity where we wonder what is real.
Once immersed, I couldn't tear myself away. Waterhouse has a brilliant and keen mind and I look forward to reading more of his work in the future.
Sara On My MindReview Date: 2006-12-12
After you've read this novel and put it down, the protagonist, Sara Smith, will stay with you, not just because of her superficial quirks and foibles but because of her complicated but wonderful humanity. This is character development at its best. Days after reading this novel you might find yourself wondering how Sara Smith, a middle-aged English woman in New York City, would perceive the life that you are living. And having Sara in your head is not easy. In a typically brilliant but sharp passage, Waterhouse provides us with Sara's idea of heaven, "Sara's heaven of nudity and lust seemed to her resonant of life, of energy, of animal need. Animal need she could like. Dreamy cloudlands, these were the bloodless wishes of those who had hopelessly failed in the human skins which encased everything they were."
Like her sense of heaven, Sara's sense of reality could brook no dreamy cloudland either, be it frontier land, fantasy land, tomorrow land, or anything else in the antiseptic, ideal world according to Disney. Sara's no-holds-barred contempt for all things Disney is wildly and comically refreshing, but it may doom Waterhouse's brilliant effort to guaranteed obscurity. We all live in a dreamland where there is no world of literature separate from corporate control. So another compelling reason to buy this book is so that writing can continue to be one of the last refuges for the rebel.
The story line is intriguing with a good layer of surprises. We could summarize it here or even reveal it completely but that's not polite. But this reader is so taken by Waterhouse's engaging style that the plot seemed almost incidental. Of course it's unfair to compare a novelist's first effort with the style of an icon, but reading "Fates, Flowers", puts one in mind of Vonnegut. There are no unnecessary words or convoluted sentences to clutter up the narrative, yet meaning is not compromised. Let's call it art. Read "Fates, Flowers".

A Solid Overview of the Biblical Teaching of Eternal SecurityReview Date: 2008-09-01
He points out that, if eternal security is not true, then Christ's atoning death was inadequate, that He had failed as intercessor and advocate, and that promises in the Bible of knowing the fact of one's salvation are untrue. Also, the sealing ministry of the Holy Spirit (2 Corinthians 1:22) must be understood in light of the fact that, in the ancient world, a seal signified ownership, authority, approval, and perfection.
We've all heard the arguments related to professing Christians who later fell away. But such arguments from experience can be turned around. If the verses in Hebrews mean that a person who falls away loses salvation, then they also mean that he cannot possibly regain his salvation ("once lost, always lost"). This, of course, is contradicted by experience. People who once professed Christ and then fell away often return to Christ later in life.
Waterhouse, in common with virtually all those who discuss Hebrews 6:1-12 pro- and con- relative to eternal security, suppose that it is God who doesn't renew those who have fallen away to repentance. In actuality, the early church understood this verse to refer to church discipline: the church's authority to excommunicate and to lift the excommunication. This verse meant that the church should excommunicate the apostates and never allow them to publicly repent before the church and be restored to fellowship (notably those who drift to and away from Christianity according to personal convenience). It had nothing to do with the salvation of such an individual--a matter before God, not the church.
Of course, this relatively brief book cannot cover all aspects of the doctrine of eternal security. For instance, it has falsely been argued that this doctrine is a recent invention--that no one in the early church believed in eternal security. In fact, some did, including Ambrosiaster and Jerome. The latter affirmed that, even those who trusted Christ but later sinned and fell away, will eventually be saved.
Biblical Teaching on the Eternal Salvation of the BelieverReview Date: 2007-07-03
Because a person's view on eternal security determines his whole outlook and motivation for their walk as a Christian it is important to understand this important doctrine. Dr. Waterhouse presents both side of the issue with a strong defense of the doctrine of eternal security. He explains in detail problem passages that are often used in debating the security of the believer.
This compact book is an ideal tool for pastors, Bible teachers to use guiding those individuals insecure in their faith. A solid understanding of the subject of this book will help the believer to experience God's fullness in their Christian walk.
