many possible uses

The author of this book intended it for the convenience of teachers and recreational leaders who cannot read music and therefore cannot learn hitherto unfamiliar songs from musical notation.

However, it has other uses too. For instance, it is good for a music teacher with a beginning student. In this book, there are 26 songs to the tune of Mary Had a Little Lamb. If the student's friends and relatives sing those 26 songs while the student accompanies, the student will get plenty of practice and have fun at the same time. Other familiar tunes appear with comparable frequency.

The book is also good for teachers of English as a second language. Most of the songs are repetitious pattern songs which the students could easily learn.

0911019073, 0911019022, and 0911019014 have all been very helpful to me both as a music teacher and as an ESL teacher.

Morning Coffee, wouldn't DREAM of starting a new day without

This book, as well as Warren Bonesteels 'online version' put out daily, as well as his new website, are something that many internet families wouldn't/CAN'T begin a new day without anymore! I met Warren online quite some time ago and have been an avid daily reader as well as sharing his daily "Morning Coffee" posts with groups throughout the internet with! Often times I don't go to bed at night until Warren has posted is daily issue of "Morning Coffee" and I've got it out to one and all for their reading pleasure first thing in the Morning. Several people have relied upon this and can't begin a decent day without their cup of java AND their dose of "Morning Coffee"

Warren speaks, types, in a down to earth southern style, a one on one level that anyone and everyone can accept. He makes you KNOW you're family, that you're welcome at his table for a cup of good hot STRONG java and you're welcome to stay as long as you like. Bones (as we nickname him) is not one of those who'll push his ideas on the reader and personally states what he thinks and is more than willing to have YOU write him back with YOUR opinions. Warren is HUMAN, treats his readers as the human beings they are, and always leaves the kitchen table with an open door policy and the knowlege that the coffee is always brewing, strong, hot, good, and that one and all are welcome to join him for some! God Bless this man's Golden Heart! This is THE BOOK~~ONE HUMAN BEING SPEAKING WITH OTHER HUMAN BEINGS on an even level with the reader. Not the 'usual high fallutin Enlgish that the reader has to stop and say, HUH? And need to re-read to attempt to understand what was said. In the humor, the stories, the discussions, the 'visitin', most generally there will be a 'moral to the story'. This book is FOR ALL AGE GROUPS AND I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT TO SOME OF THE WORLD'S YOUTH OF TODAY, THEY JUST MIGHT LEARN A BIT ABOUT RESPECT!

Essential reading for the Civil War buff
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2005-05-13
I bought this book at a book sale simply to read on a long ferry crossing in 1993. I was so enthralled that it's never been too far away from my side ever since.

It covers the 57th Mass from the days in late 1863 and their formation, and follows them through their training and their departure from Camp Wool for the front as part of Grant's "Overland Campaign" in 1864/65.

Once they set out on their march, the journey is described in such graphic detail that the reader becomes almost like a member of the regiment marching with them. Reading the stories of the battles, you can feel the pain that the author manages to convey as he describes how the soldiers are blown away at the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, North Anna, Cold Harbor, Petersburg and the Crater until at the Weldon Railroad there are only 30 soldiers left standing.

Not only that, Wilkinson includes a detailed account of soldier life, life at Andersonville, and has painstakingly researched the military life of every single one of the 1038 soldiers that made up the regiment in such detail that he has corrected many errors that seeped into common knowledge after the war, including some in the regiment's own history of 1896.

In May 2005 I was lucky enough to have a few days free in Virginia during a business trip to the USA, and so, armed with a rental car and this book, I traced the route of the 57th from the Germanna Ford to their final and climactic appointment with fate at Fort Stedman. Thanks to this book, it was one of the most enlightening and informative journeys I have ever made.

I recommend this book to anyone, and consider it essential reading for any Civil War buff.

This is a book you can hear...the interviews with people who live in western North Carolina are so well done that as you read you can hear the people speaking. This book covers many topics from farming to history. A good cross section of people gives the reader the opportunity to read different opinions on the varied topics. The book is filled with excellent photograhs. Especially interesting are photographs of most of the people interviewed in the book. Putting faces with the 'voices' is a real treat! The reader gets a good overview of the history of the area and insights into often ignored aspects of the culture of this georgous part of the US. This book is a good research tool for anyone learning about the area and it is entertaining reading as well. I love it!

pulp fiction and politically incorrect social commentary

The Destroyer is way better that the Executioner, who seems to spend his time chasing down mafiosi. Remo Williams and his mentor Chiun, tend to go after the Hitler of the month, such as trial lawyers, arab terrorists, and the Kennedy clan. In this book it is clearly Al Sharpton, but it was written before that fat knuckle-head was big news. That is why the Destroyer was so much fun to read prior to the Reagan era.

Thus book attacked every angle of decaying New York sociopathy from idiotic police to schools that sucked up taxpayers' money as if there was no tomorrow. Never mind that illiterate morons were being chucked out into society with nothing more than 12 years of compulsory attendance.

The plot of Murphy and Sapir's novel is pretty threadbare at best, but the fun is in the color of the story. And of course the chop sockey. Disgusting filthy people have their corrupt and worthless existences terminated with extreme prejudice saving the general public the expense of a trial. Suits me just fine, after all it's only fiction.

Some readers might find this novel to be racist, tough break. Reality sucks.

A LOT OF GREAT INFORMATION IN A SMALL PACKAGE
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2008-05-09
The Music of Africa: An Introduction by Dr. Fred Warren is really a small volume that should be in every public and school library. I found this subject to be absolutely fascinating. Being completely "nonmusical" my self, I am never-the-less intrigued by the subject and am one of those people that feel we have, throughout the years, underestimated the impact music has had on culture and society, any society, since the beginning.

Dr. Warren has produced a wonderful primer here on the subject of African Music, which, when you think about it, has had a tremendous impact and has been absolutely influential on the music of American and Western Europe and its overall development. A very readable text has covered the place of music in traditional African life, melody in African music, rhythm in African music along with form. I particularly enjoyed the black and white sketches of traditional African musical instruments by Penelope Naylor. They quite well enhanced the comprehensive text.

While this is a basic book addressing a most fascinating subject, the author has given us a very comprehensive bibliography and discography. Wonderful source books and records are listed here that are a great resource for those who want to go further with this study. This book has approximately 81 pages of actual text and drawings, but don't be put off by the brevity of the work. There is a wealth of information here, in particular for people like me who knew very little in regards to the subject. Another aspect of this work that was quite impressive was that it can be read by young folks, and quite well understood, and yet there is great appeal and much to be learned by older people also. If you do not know what a Kalungu or mbiras is, and want to know, then this book is for you!

Highly recommend this one. If you like knowledge, like source material, like little known facts, then you will love this one. For overall music lovers and for those who study musical history, then this is one you probably will want to add to your personal library. Actually, I find myself referring to my copy quite often.

I read this book shortly after becoming a step-mother to two preschoolers and while pregnant with my first child. I had no idea what I was doing as a parent, and this book helped me to gain some direction and confidence. I can't wait to read the next two books in the series!

This is a very wonderful book for children of all races and ages (from ages 0 to 100), speaking form a child care provider's point of view. All "my" children (at home and in day care) love both the songs and the pictures, all though I think I enjoy it more, brings back so many memories. This is a "must have book" and cassette!!
