A cogent, insightful analysis, to understanding elections.
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2004-10-21
A former professor of mine, at St. Louis University (in St. Louis Missouri) Dr. Warren goes a long way in explaining and expressing the need for public opinion polls; particularly as they relate to the political process (especially in the U.S.). People and politicians either love them, hate them, or have no opinion (sometimes) about them. Dr. Warren makes a strong case that those politicians who ignore them do so at their own risk. One case he particularly makes well is the public reaction to the Clinton-Lewinsky matter. The history, methods, and use, and of course, misuse, of polls is also explored. While I may not agree with Dr. Warren's assessment that politicians should follow polls, nonetheless, they are important to a candidate's ability to be elected, remain in office, and even how the candidate's legacy is determined. Dr. Warren also shows how polls have been used outside the U.S., e.g., in Britain, to elect Tony Blair, Britain's prime minister; Ehud Barak, in Israel, and others.
Whether one agrees or disagrees with Dr. Warren's analysis of polls in politics, this book is well worth a look, as they relate to the 2004 election (though the book stops at 2000; which is the final chapter, as the polls applied to the disasterous election that gave us the current administration, God Help Us).

Insight into a Overlooked Design Period

Provides superb photos of furniture from the period. It is a pity that more was not done with paintings and architectural drawings, but since it is a catalog from a gallery show not a museum show there were, no doubt, limitations on what could be borrowed. After seeing these real antiques I was inspired and reassured to purchase two reproduction chairs resembling the cover photo on the book. Up until now the only reference I had was the catalog from the 1976 Houston Museum oif Fine Arts show, whose catalog is of a lesser quality and smalller size as regards reproduction, but better on provenance details.

Bountiful and Nahom discovered

The book by the Astons is a MUST in any LDS library. Notwithstanding being only 88 pages, a fraction of the size of other excellent texts on Book of Mormon historicity (e.g., Echoes and Evidences of the Book of Mormon), the Astons show that the account of the journey in the Arabian Peninsula as described in the Book of Mormon is entirely plausible, showing that the Book of Mormon sites Nahom (1 Nephi 16:34) and Bountiful (1 Nephi 17:5) can actually be mapped in the Arabian Peninsula, something beyond the capabilities of any 19th century American scholar, let alone Joseph Smith, Sidney Rigdon, Oliver Cowdery, and others, let alone Ethan Smith and Solomon Spalding! Indeed, the only logical conclusion to the overwhelming evidences conducive to Book of Mormon authenticity is that the author of FIrst Nephi was someone who made the journey through Arabia, not Joseph Smith.

U.S. Marines in Iceland

INCIDENT AT REYKJAVIK

During World War II, Adolph Hitler coveted Iceland for use as a base to eliminate convoys between the United States and Britain. German Patrol aircraft and U-boats based there would wreak havoc on allied shipping. After examining the operational problems involved, Hitler decided against invading Iceland...or did he?
Lieutenant Ron Young and his platoon were part of the Marine Corps contingent sent in mid 1941 to relieve the British forces that were occupying Iceland against the threat of German invasion. America and Germany were not at war, but if the Germans came, the Marines would have to fight. As the snow falls, Lieutenant Young is training his ski platoon to a fine edge and waiting for what will come. Across the Norwegian Sea in Trondheim, Captain Helmut Werth, with his elite force of German paratroopers, waits for the day.
What happened there and how it affected the participants in the years that followed is a compelling story of the heady days of a world at war. From Iceland to Guadalcanal to the peacetime Marines, Korea, and then Iceland again under NATO, "Incident at Reykjavik" is a saga of the Marine Corps and the men and women whose lives and loves were a part of it.

As a graduate studuent who has conducted ethnographic fieldwork in Guatemala, I found this book to very insightful. In my view, Kay Warren does a commendable job of addressing and discussing the politics of the Pan-Maya movement and its actions and arguments since the signing of the peace accords. Furthermore, she describes the role of the foreign anthropologist in the Maya culture and the critiques given by Pan-Maya activists towards the discipline of anthropology. For example, Warren relates the statements of the well-known Pan-Mayanist, Sam Colop (82). Warren concludes that the underlying question is; "What are you doing in Guatemala to benefit the Maya people?" This is particularly relevant to any social scientist, let alone those working in Guatemala.

Of particular interest is Warren's discussion on 'transforming selves'; the belief that certain individuals possess the capacity to physically transform themselves into an animal. She provides an excellent argument on why this belief resurfaced during the civil war, a period of extreme distrust. The bibliography is extensive and Warren's knowledge of critical theory, anthropology, history, Guatemalan (and, one might add, Peruvian) ethnography and political studies is considerable. This book could serve as a starting point for anyone interested in the current situation in Guatemala.

The only shortcoming I found is that the chapters do not flow smoothly. This is most likely due to the fact that some of the book was derived from previously written articles.

Nevertheless, I found it to be an enjoyable read and strongly recommend it to anyone interested in Guatemala and the Maya culture.

Indulge is sexy story with a lot of heart. Dennis' charm and Mercedes beauty and intelligence make them very likeable characters. Camilla is a delight. She is a sweet, shy girl who blossoms and finds her own true love with a little help from Mercedes. Indulge is a very good story with passion, tenderness and touching happily ever-afters.

This is an excellent introduction to the subject of Information Warfare. Unlike many other books on the subject it is clearly written. Refreshingly the author does not feel the need to prefix every second word with 'cyber'!

This is a good book for managers of organisations, information operations personnel, and students looking for a broad overview of the subject.

The Integrity Alarm
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2000-06-17
An unmistakable rise is occurring in the number of ministers and ministries that fail. Staggering devastation and shaken faith are the results of careless behavior exhibited by Christian leaders. Men and women alike are earning our trust and breaking it, often with not hint of repentance. While distracting and disappointing to the people who are the Church (universal and local) we dare not collapse in a fit of dispair. Wiersbe approaches the embattled reputation of the church with candor and hope. Two myths that perpetuate a lack of integrity are sufficiently dismantled: 1) when ministers slip-up it does not affect me 2) popularity is an indicator of spiritual strength The author generously provides Biblical proof for the Church as a body where each part has a function and a unified purpose (I Corinthians 12). He then directs our attention to Jeremiah, Nehemiah and John the Baptist because they illustrate how unpopular serving God faithfully can be. These twelve chapters are a current and highly instructive alarm for believers. We are capable and responsible to practice integrity. Wiersbe's illustrations are clear while his suggestions are thoughtful and compelling. The study guide provides an excellent source for group study and review. The Integrity Crisis is an essential tool for reflecting the true image of a comfortable Church.

The most thorough work on the subject that I have found.

"International trusts have been a popular mechanism in estate planning since the early Roman days when emperors hoped to retain plundered treasures for their descendants. (Trusts) were later refined by the Crusaders when they left their homes for foreign ventures. However, it is only in the last decade that trusts have leaped to the forefront as a prime avenue in offshore financial planning." Thus begins the foreword in the first volume of a publication that provides the complete text of all foreign trust laws entitled International Trust Laws and Analysis. Like a number of other works by the Diamonds (Tax Havens of the World, International Withholding Tax Treaty Guide, Capital Formation and Investment Incentives Around the World, and Tax-Free Trade Zones of the World), International Trust Laws and Analysis is not a 'light read.' It is thorough, up-to-date, and chock-full of detail for the serious offshore investor or professional advisor interested in researching the best home for a trust for any given situation. The foreword is an excellent introduction to the offshore financial world, detailing the background on movement of more than $5 trillion US offshore, more than $3.5 trillion since 1989, and the growth of the popular Asset Protection Trust (APT). It then covers major considerations when creating foreign trusts, US taxation issues and trust changes including the surreptitious addition of legislation to the 1996 Small Business Job Protection Act that effectively removed virtually all tax (and some other) benefits to offshore trusts for US persons. The foreword also covers: An explanation of common law trusts, Civil law trusts, The Hague convention, Trust substitutes, Selecting a jurisdiction and trustee, Highlights of countries with foreign trusts dividing common law and civil law nations. The two volumes, consisting of more than 4,800 pages, offer a complete dissertation of trust legislation and incentives offered by various international jurisdictions complete with analysis of e! ach, literally covering the globe. Walter and Dorothy Diamond have done a thorough job making this work an essential edition to the libraries of all offshore advisors and serious investors.
