Design is everywhere

This book is an exciting exploration of universal principles (paradigms) of form and design. Warren Wake identifies the design fundamentals common to such diverse areas as architecture and insects, industrial design and weather patterns. The book is organized around big questions in design, like how two objects can be joined, and how an object can change size. Within each category or chapter, the author takes us through the many ingenious solutions to these fundamental problems, wherever the solutions may be. One moment we're looking at how an armadillo can roll into a ball, then we're seeing how this can be applied to metal construction to bend and change the form of rigid materials. We see the structure of a Swiss Army Knife and then how the principle can be applied to clothing design. The bottom-line message is that "Design is Everywhere," and this book is as good a guide to this view of the world as you'll find. It should be required reading for persons interested in industrial design or architecture, and should be interesting to anyone interested in how things work.

One of the best in the series!

The middle east is near war, Shiva and Kali are dancing the Tandava, stirring the cauldron of blood, and moving the world towards destruction.

Remo is actually DEAD until the final pages, when Chiun must make a deal with Shiva for the return of his pupil.

This is one of the pivotal books in the series, and one of the most enjoyable to read. It's actually part two of the only multi-part book. Read the previous one (#85, Blood Lust) first!

Uncle Sam trys to take over Cuba and turn it into a theme park. A great parody of Uncle Wally, it's Remo and Chiun at their best. Realllllly funny, great satire. Uncle Sam becomes a villian second only to Mr.Gordons

Learn To Use Your Imagination, in all areas of life.
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.

I wish I could send a copy of this book to every pastor. I guarantee it would enrich their preaching to the point of replacing those blank stares from the pews with concentrated listening and note taking. The key is learning METAPHORS. Metpahors allow ideas to been seen and not just heard. Metaphors reach the emotions if well chosen.

Jesus often spoke with metaphors to make His point deeply understood. Speaking to unbelieving Pharassies He said, "You are like white washed sepulchres with dead mens bones inside." How vivid and shocking.

Metaphorical thinking can be developed by reading poetry, biography, philosophy, history. It makes communication much more interesting and therefore more is retained. I think some pastors have a feeling that they should not use vivid or penetrating imagery when preaching. To them I would say read Dr. Wiersbe's book.

I have sat in church services where people talked during the preaching. The preacher either didn't care or was unaware of it. A few well chosen metaphors would have drawn their interest.

Also recommended, "Metaphors We Live By", by Lakoff and Johnson (see reviews). It is a further exploration of metaphors.

Metaphors apply to many areas of life, not just preaching. Using imagination one can understand others better, underatnd history, sciences, biography, etc. Imagination allows us to project ourselves into the world. So, these books will be useful to everyone who is open to understanding how they relate to the world. Metaphors are like dreams come true, which is one of my favorite metaphors.

As Dr. Wiersbe says, "Images feed concepts, concepts discipline images. Images without concepts are blind, concepts without images are sterile." Metaphors use picture words to illustrate the concept.

Simple, clear, and comforting

"There are some sufferings that we endure simply because we are human and subject to pain; but there are other sufferings that come because we are God's people and want to serve Him." Those are the words of Warren Wiersbe in his insightful and encouraging devotional book, Devotions for Encouragement & Maturity. The book is divided into two, thirty-day segments-the first dealing with the New Testament book of II Corinthians, and the second with the New Testament book of James.

As we face the daily difficulties and disappointments of life, it can be hard to accept God's sovereign will, and often it seems as though He has forgotten us altogether. But through Paul's inspirational writings in II Corinthians, and with Wiersbe's insights into those writings, we can gain assurance that our Heavenly Father cares and that He is working out His divine plan.

Wiersbe's observations are simple, clear and comforting, and he reminds us that difficulty in the life of the Believer never comes by accident. On the contrary, trials are often our greatest source of learning, and they help to equip us for ministry to others.

"Outlook determines outcome, and attitude determines action," says Wiersbe. "Believers who expect the Christian life to be easy are in for a shock. Because we are God's scattered people and not His sheltered people, we must experience trials." Through his understanding of the writings of James, Wiersbe offers believers hope for life's hard times and strength for life's shortcomings. - Nancy K. Brown, Christian Book Previews.com

This is one of the best architectural dictionaries that I have found. It has a number of layman terms and quite a few diagrams. It is concise, but contained all of the terms that we have come up with so far.

The Lovely Angels Destroy Cyberspace!
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2000-04-06
Despite what the title above says, "Sim Hell" was the fourth book in the American "Dirty Pair" series. And by that time, Adam Warren's artwork had developed to the point of being truly fantastic. This is some of the most beautiful and detailed black and white artwork you will ever see, and it accompanies a great story to boot!

Much to her dismay, Kei, one of the infamous "Lovely Angels," AKA the "Dirty Pair," is ordered back to 3WA headquarters on Shimogu for her annual "evaluative assessment," which includes a direct interface with the enigmatic 3WA Central Computer. Riddled with anxiety, she proceeds to her assessment, and seems to be doing fine. But, of course, something goes awry, and Kei's partner, Yuri, must go into the system after her.

This is a very intelligently written science-fiction story, which also happens to include the requisite helpings of dark humor, excessive violence, and gratuitous cheesecake one always encounters in a good "Dirty Pair" story. Adam Warren also has a great deal of fun with the concept of nanomachines, using them in some truly creative and shocking ways.

Worth the price of admission just for the "harem" scene, which will have you laughing hysterically. Very highly recommended to all manga, anime, and sci-fi fans. Definitely among the best "Dirty Pair" stories ever told.
