Here's a great read. Strong characters and strong emotions. It's an adult book, but it's also one of those titles that crosses
the adult/young-adult divide. Teachers will love it. Bad teachers because of the issues - child abuse, self-harm, lesbianism,
religious conviction vs scepticism - and good teachers because of the way they're covered, in such a vivid and quietly humorous
way. No racism, thank the Lord, and the characters don't carry the issues around like placards; in fact they rather lead you
up the garden path. There's one - Tom - who irritates me a bit, but he gets the ending he deserves. Some subtle discussions
about God along the way. You'll be hooked from the 1st page and you'll enjoy it.

A program for first and second year undergraduates in organic chemistry. This programmed text is written so that the student
can teach himself the principles of carbonyl chemistry starting from the simplest addition reactions and ending with highly
sophisticated syntheses. The approach is mechanistic and the book attempts to stress the logic behind carbonyl chemistry and
to show how the basic principles applied in this field are also relevant in other areas of organic chemistry. The program
may therefore be used as a text in the teaching of the principles of organic reaction mechanisms in general.
There are no multiple choice questions; the student is set a continually advancing challenge to his own competence. He is told what he needs to know before he starts, and each chapter has a list of new concepts required as previous knowledge.

The U.S is populated by far too many overweight and under-
exercised children. It is a personal and national concern.
The Joyce Rankin book provides everything needed to begin a
running program that could change all this--creating fit
youngsters who become healthier, active, more productive
adults. The program also builds confidence, so needed as
children approach adolescence. Adults who run, who teach,
or who simply care about kids should read this book and plunge
ahead. They might learn something. And they'll surely have
fun.

Chronicle of an Adoption is a thoughtfully written book. This is not a how to; this is a book that tells a story from a very
different point of view - a father's. This book will make you laugh, cry and get angry at our governmental system that is
charged with the responsibility of caring for our nation's youth. This family was able to adopt a child, at no cost despite
the system. There are many ideas presented by Mr. Panem that need further exploration.
If you are thinking about adoption this is a must read. There are many childrewn out there that are in need of a good home. Mr. Panem can point you in the right direction.
If you have already adopted this is a good book to read, and remember what you went through.
Either way, I was impressed with this book. 5 stars.

Reprinting of an old classic.

Prior to 1960, the availability of books regarding the Civil War was a fraction of what it is today. Extraordinary storytellers
such as Shelby Foote were not yet on the scene and Hollywood had not yet glamorized the war in such glorious fashion with
epic movies and 10-part mini-series'. What I'm getting at is, in 1960, when B. A. Botkin first released his book, A CIVIL
WAR TREASURY OF TALES, LEGENDS AND FOLKLORE, he set a new standard in Civil War narration.
This 2006 edition is a reprinting of the original save for the addition of new artwork by Warren Chappell, who replaced Stephen Cushman as illustrator in the last reprinting. The stories are the same, so if you're looking for new material, you won't find it, but if you've never read Botkin's compilation of letters in this classic work, you don't want to miss it.
Botkin presents over 500 pages of letters, many originals, written by either those who took part directly in the events or who witnessed them firsthand. This is the Civil War without the sugar coating, and without the glamorizing. Some of what you read will make you laugh, some will turn your stomach. Your heart will be ripped apart as you only try to imagine the anguish of Sergeant Driscoll who shot a Confederate Officer in an ambush only to discover a few minutes later that it was in fact, his own son who had gone south before the war. You will feel the devotion of the two soldiers found sleeping next to Jackson's statue after the war, "just to sleep with the old man once more".
There are a few accounts of major battles, and a few profiles of individual leaders, but for the most part, this is a collection of stories about skirmishes, many of which you may never have heard of, and about individuals and their happenings during the war. In all, there are six chapters here, one for each year of the war, as well as a brief closing chapter regarding the aftermath. This is followed by an extraordinary collection of over 30 pages of notes, however, sadly, most of the books referenced here are long out of print and nearly impossible to locate.
Botkin, himself a professor of history, compiled over a dozen volumes of folklore. I believe this was his best compilation. An outstanding study guide with great merit for students, this is the Civil War as told by those who lived it.

This is quite simply the most breathtaking performance by a narrator that I've ever heard. This collection of truly great
American short stories, most of which were written in the last 75 years, ranges throughout the country...north, south, east
and west. It is just unbelievable to me that any single person could sit down and perform all these stories with an all-encompassing
depth of comprehension and a complete mastery of accents...and then on top of that to provide absolutely believable voice
characterizations that are totally distinct from the voice of the narrator. This guy Griffin can do a completely convincing
child or woman, and then in the next breath he's either back to the narrator voice or that of a male character. I teach literature
classes at the high school and junior college level and I have received outstanding results in getting my students to listen
to these fine stories without complaint where previously I had to beg and cajole them to read. These recordings have engendered
many a lively classroom discussion. The music and sound effects are perfect, never intruding...always in the background when
you most appreciate them. You'll never hear Faulkner done better than here. Absolutely fabulous work!

A modern day renaissance man - an attorney, a chemist, but "Clear All the Rest of the Way" focuses on Warren Woessner's creative
side, as his first anthology dedicated strictly to his own brilliant poetry, although he is prolifically in many other books
of poetry, sharing them with other poets. His first solo work is nothing to be sneezed at, it's in fact quite the opposite,
as Woessner speaks from his heart and his writing shows his emotions and displays them vividly. Greetings: Please help an
old man/give a quarter or more to help/buy my medicine/You will have a good holiday/ & a happy new year/Merry Xmas.

A fantastic look at 1886 Chicago. A Chicago peopled by characters directly out of Chicago's past: Marshall Field, Medill,
Palmer, et. al. Wonderful songs and great illustrations by the great Chicago artist Carlos Cortez. A funny, but sharp and
ironic text, driven by some great music, which is printed with the book. This is not just a play preceded by some brilliant
essays by Leming- it is a parable going to the heart of the American experience, then and now. A tale of robber barons and
the reds who made their crimes public. Brilliant, and all of it with a cabaret edge. The play has been performed in Chicago.
Saw it, under Leming's direction and think it an american classic. I've send the six copies I bought to friends here and in
europe. A fantastic piece of literature-, and one of the great American parables in play form.
