Pure Genius! A Work that Will Live!Review Date: 1999-01-02
Our profession (golf architecture) is indebted to the editors for their second volume of Tillinghast essays. It is to be followed by a third title within two years entitled GLEANINGS FROM THE WAYSIDE. (I think the first, THE COURSE BEAUTIFUL is still available.)
Frank Hannigan says in the foreword that golf architecture is an art form requiring engineering expertise mixed with 19th century principles of landscape design. Vision is also required in the creation of golf courses as it was in the creations by Olmstead and other 19th century landscape architects.
Somehow Tilly's essays demonstrate this. Reading them and studying the descriptive illustrations one reaches that conclusion.
REMINISCENCES...... IS A WORK WORTHY OF STUDY AND A PLACE IN ALL OUR LIBRARIES AND AS A GIFT TO CLIENTS AND OTHERS. We urge members to obtain it and if still available THE COURSE BEAUTIFUL. This trilogy will live and could influence our profession far into the future, because the three volumes will be studied by all seeking the upward progress of our profession which must be one of the most intriguing ever practiced. As Rees and Ben indicate, Tilly ranks among its most unique practioners.

Truly Remarkable BookReview Date: 2001-07-07
It is rare to experience a combination of intelligent and informative prose as that of Rosamund Wolff Purcell and Warren Allmon with such truly breathtaking art as the work of Barbara Page in one edition. This book celebrates what those of us in publishing know to be true--there will ALWAYS be a hunger for beautiful and important books on ink-printed pages.

Miracle WorkerReview Date: 2005-09-03
Many recognize St. Anthony as the saint to pray to when things are lost as well as praying to him for safe travels. However, few people are familiar with the miracles performed by St. Anthony. So profound was his work, that the pope put his cannonization into progress within a year of St. Anthony's passing from this world. Whether converting pagans and muslims or raising the dead, nothing was impossible for this man who was clearly in the Lord's favor.
The printing of S.A.G. on letters invokes the saint's protection on letters and packages. This a small though popular way our lives are influenced by St. Anthony.
For those seeking to learn of the divine life of St. Anthony and his miracles, I would highly recommend this book. While the text is brief, the book is packed with information. The faithful should have difficulty stepping away from this read. It should be difficult not to find inspiration in reading this book. I would hope St. Anthony would guide my life in order that my work might be pleasing to the Lord. I would hope the same for other readers as well.

SARGENT, AHH, SARGENTReview Date: 2007-02-22
Between the mid-Victorian era through the art deco era, Sargent followed a different drummer. He was and was not a part of impressionism, he was and was not a part of a softened version of dramatic Romanticism, he was and was not the leading exponent of splashing color and slashing, bold brush strokes, ala, Brangwyn and Sorolla. His art sang above the heads of the poor meager critics, who ignored his brilliant brush work and perfect atmospheric perfection and the delightfully lovely women he painted and the sensual and alluring Décolletage his talent dispalyed so alluringly, only to say he was a painter of portraits which highly flattered his clients.
In his era and still, only a few were even close to his giftedness. The names of the critics who Gossiped about his romaticizing and flattering his clients, by adding beauty they did not possess, and pandering to the wealthiest of the wealthy-presidents, Courtesans, famous beauties, actresses, billionaires and their gorgeous wives and daughters, Sargent was the portrait artist of the upper classes, but his masterful control of quick slashing, bold brush stroke, brilliant light and colorful scenes, as well as his fluid handling of fabrics, like satin, silk, velvet, were unmatched save for Boldini. Buy it if you love brilliant art work at a bargain price. You won't regret it.
"Sargent's Women" book was off the chain!Review Date: 2005-06-12
Sargent is one of several artists who truly love women and the way they look. He paint them as they are and didn't flatter them with false ideas of beauty. He broke the conventional mode of beauty by painting them as they are and took in account their personalities, lifestyles, and climates. His works included many women of color as well as upper class British, French, and American women and those in between. His paintings of his mother and sisters were well-done and documented. He's one guy who loves women the way they are.
This book contains many never before seen paintings of Capri, Spanish, Gypsy, and Venetian women, the women of his family, Madame Gautreau(Madame X, as she is known today), etc.
Here's my take on some of the ladies Sargent painted:
Judith Gautier: A muse and an art fanatic like her friend JSS and composer Richard Wagner's best friend and more. She's a true bohemian in my honest opinion.
Violet Sargent: His favorite younger sister. He painted her throughout her life since she was little.
Madame Amelie Gautreau(Madame X): His desire to paint the lady led to controversy that resulted in her ostracism and his exile from Paris for life. He left a portrait of a very sophisticated woman in a black gown.
Rosina Ferrara: His ultimate Capri dream girl, his inspiration! I could easily picture Chilli from the hip hop girl group TLC as Rosina and Rosina Ferrara of 19th Century Capri as Chilli. They both exotic beauties 100 years apart. Both of them bear uncanny resemblance to one another as well. Well, in some of Sargent's paintings, but not all.
Please get this book, it's excellent in its presentation of inspiring and interesting women he painted during his artistic career. Let's give Sargent his props by doing so.

Oswald The Patsy!!!Review Date: 2007-11-20
Will we ever be convinced?Review Date: 2007-11-16
As the 22nd of November comes around again,we are still not sure if the whole story of the Assassination of JFK is known.I have been following it since those terrible days when we were glued to our TV's watching this event unfold.
Many of us saw it live, as Oswald was shot by Jack Ruby.At least that is what we thought we saw. We were horrified at the time, and wondered where this was all going to end.At the time,it almost seemed like Oswald's killing was being staged;and doubts remain to this day.Was that really Oswald, was he really shot, why was it allowed to happen, was it done to shut him up,why did Ruby do it,who else was involved with Ruby, did Ruby have connections to Oswald, why was Oswald so quickly and easily found, would Oswald have been convicted of being the lone killer of JFK if he had been put on trial, would Oswald have involved others, and many more questions were asked at the time and to a large degree remain in doubt today ,in the minds of most people.
This book was published in 1966,and I probably read it way back then. At least ,most of the issues raised in it are somewhat familiar to anyone who followed this event and kept looking for resolution of this crime ,which has captivated millions of people.
This book is a good reminder of many details and reads as well today as it did when first published.I know ,in my case, the question of Conspiracy has not been put to bed.The fact that after so much has been written and so little not resolved, after so many years, only enforces the suspicion that a conspiracy did take place.
This book would be well worth a read by anyone born years after the event,to see why there was at the time, and still remains, such doubt about the "official" version of what happened and why.

more useful for making new documentsReview Date: 2006-08-04
Note that these future documents need not necessarily be published on the Web. You could have a bunch of them in a database.
Perhaps the most plausible use of the book is in designing these future documents. Sections in the book describe how to semi-automatically derive these from existing, non-RDF or OWL data. Like existing web pages. A hard task, if you want to find some kind of semantic meaning. This book might be considered part of the Artificial Intelligence field. But trying to tackle the general problem via the smaller step of building the Semantic Web.
