An anthology of work from over 150 poets
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2004-11-08
The Breath of Parted Lips is an anthology of work from over 150 poets, judiciously selected from the Frost Place, a sanctuary for poets and poetry. The collected poems honor Robert Frost, himself a lifelong teacher of poetry who encouraged the creative visions of young students, and Donald Sheehan, who has nurtured the legacy of the Frost Place. An original, eye-opening lyrical compendium, flourishing with the brilliance of creative work.

A remarkable anthology of twenty-four poets

The Franconia, New Hampshire, farm of the American poet Robert Frost was turned into a museum and center for poetry and the arts in 1976. From that time, "The Frost Place" has been annual event wherein an emerging poet has been invited to spend the summer living in the house where Frost once lived and wrote some of his greatest poetry. The Breath Of Parted Lips: Voices From The Robert Frost Place, Volume One is a remarkable anthology of twenty-four poets, each of whom won that honor of a summer's residency and document the success of the original concept as a means of generating outstanding poetry while nurturing the poet's muse in the rooms and views that were once the inspiration of the great Robert Frost. Poem At 40: Windwashed--as if standing next to the highway,/a truck long as the century sweeping by,/all things at last bent in the same direction./An opening, as if all/the clothes my ancestors ever wore/dry on lines in my body:/wind-whipped, parallel with the ground,/some sleeves sharing a single clothespin/so that they seem to clasp hands,/seem to hold on.//And now that I can see/up the old women's dresses,/there's nothing but a filtered light./And now that their men's smoky breath/has traversed the earth,/it has nothing to do with them./And now that awkward, fat tears of rain/slap the window screen,/now that I'm naked too,/cupping my genitals, tracing with a pencil/the blue vein between my collar bone and breast,/I'll go to sleep when I'm told.

As a member of the proletariot, I have found after years of immense slumber that value investing is the way to go. True kapitalism is not perfect, but communism seems far worse. So in conclusion Komrads, value investing is the best way for the proletariot to enter the bougerousie.

Don't get me wrong, this is an interesting and very readable book but I think the title is misleading. I didn't see much revival. The period 780-842AD is filled with military blunders, humiliating foreign tribute, pointless religious bickering and violent power struggles. Why anyone would even want the job of Emperor/Basileus is beyond me. Most of these guys and one gal ended up blinded, castrated or worse for their troubles, ditto for their families. This empire seems to have been held together by its tax collecting ability and religous orthodoxy rather than its military prowess, multi ethnic people or corrupt overall government. It makes me appreciate our good ol' democracy.

The most significant thing that happened during the period is the directed settlement of what is now Greece by pushing aside the long established Slavic invaders. Emperor Nicephorus strong-armed a quarter million people to set up shop in these long abandoned areas of the empire. Nowadays we'd call that ethnic cleansing and send in the UN!

Successful Revitalization of an Ancient Empire

In another great text on Byzantine History, Treadgold shows how the Byzantine Empire, wrought by devastation on all sides from Avars, Slavs, Bulgars, Arabs and Saracens, as well as entangled in internal strife over the question of iconography was able to revitalize itself under a series of successful rulers beginning in 780. He provides accurate and useful information on the economy, the growth of the Orthodox Chruch, the debates of Iconoclasm, and the successful re-Hellenization of of the Balkans while keeping the reader interested and focused on the topic. What I like best about this book is that at the end of each chapter, he provides an overall assessment of the Empire, its growth since its last emperor, the strengths as well as the weaknesses of the times. The main argument Treadgold is trying to portray is that in this period of regrowth, the Empire was reduced to its skeletal framework, but was able to monopolize on a being a smaller regional state, and expand back into the Balkans and Asia Minor with a series of strategic and unified military and diplomatic endeavors and hold onto any new territorial claims. Here is where we see the beginnings of Byzantine culture, the revitalization of learning, and the guidance of educated patriarchs and monks that set the stage for the next 300 years of Byzantium's Golden Age. This book is a must for anyone who wishes to learn about how Byzantium recovered from its earlier defeats at the hands of Persia and Islam, and was able to come back stronger than ever before.

Trends for strategic thinking and organizational change.

Review Date: 1999-03-21
Explores a broad range of ideas about organization and management based on the premise that time, space, and mass are fundamental dimensions of all businesses. A few of the ideas introduced are: mass customization, real-time organization, any time / any place organization, distinguishing between a business and its organization, and the shift to producing intangible products. Discusses the changing nature of the economy. Captures today's key trends for strategic thinking and organizational change. Recommended.

"Proven" new ways to think about business

Review Date: 1999-09-22
Can you not be compelled by a visionary author who opens this edition of his book with a review of the first edition, written in 1987! The 20-page new introduction and review is one of the most fascinating parts of the book. In a fairly modest way, not self-serving, Davis shows how most of his ideas have come to pass. Some are in still in development, and a couple of previous case studies have since flopped eg Sears one-stop-shop. But overall I thought it was a remarkable performance, and a key source of credibility for the book and the author. How many other business writers have put themselves to this same public test - not many that I know of, with the exception of Peter Drucker.

In 1987 Davis introduced concepts such as competing on speed, and mass customization. Today we accept that time has become intrinsic to business logic, and mass customization is now developing its own mass following. In this new edition he sticks with the powerful thinking tool he proposed earlier, namely that time, space and mass are fundamental dimensions of business. It is through exploring the extremes of this framework that new services and business models have eventuated. Davis shows us how to use that rather esoteric framework to help re-think our business. And I think very successfully, although it seems hard to grasp at first glance.

For example, we all take for granted the shrinkage of mass - miniaturisation. The thesis is that all core products will shrink, and the intangible component must grow for a business to remain sustainable. So we must extend our minds to take on the challenge of defining the knowledge-value in a mortgage or a pair of socks. The redistribution of product "space" will dramatically alter industries such as health care and education. Witness the advent of on-line training programs for computer skills, which can now result in Microsoft certified staff. Employees do these programs at work while doing their current jobs. And Microsoft's Encarta Learning Centre is another redistribution of educational product space.

Of course there are other books that cover the same ground as above. But this one is the seminal work, from a fundamental mental model. It has stood the test of a decade and is still completely current. And it has more - "organisations run by marketplace economics", "the misconception of having internal customers", "the business is not the organisation", "successful strategy self-destructs" etc.

I must comment on the one glaring anomaly that stands out in reviewing progress over the ten years from the first edition. It is the lack of progress in developing and implementing new organisations, and new ways of working together. This lack of change is astounding to me in the context of the other change that is framed by the book. As Davis remarks in his new preface "the organisational precepts are yet to come". For that reason alone I would recommend this book to every business leader.

I found this book very amusing and a lot of fun to read. It is a well-depicted "guide" to a country that is believable and reminiscient, to me, of Tolkien's Shire. It tells the history of the country, describes the inhabitants, and even has a bookmark with the alphabet printed on it. I fully enjoyed reading it, even as a 12-year-old, and highly recommend it to all kids.

I own an original 1930's version and it's content is explosive. Few have lived modern history as Seldes has.Thank Goodness this book is finally out in print again,Many Thanks to all who made it possible! From a man who lived 104 years and spent 90% of that life immersed in history traveling the globe and recording what he heard and saw. Add to that the greatest journalistic integrity ever ( he set a standard that few today can come close to)combined with an ability to read the events as they unfold and make fantastically accurate predictions as to the future. One of his earlier full length books but so relevant today to any student of history and journalism. Read SELDES! Read the Amazon pitch above for the dry version of the events covered in this book, read them yourself to see him bring them to life. Seldes can recount with taking a side and still record events without an agenda. So lastly, But most importantly: READ SELDES!

Being a woman is one of God's most precious and complicated gifts. Woman assume so many roles in life:wife, mother, lover and friend are the most visible roles. But in Victoria Warren's moving and beautiful book CAN YOU FEEL ME? INTIMATE POETRY FOR THE WOMAN, THE WITCH, AND THE WHORE IN YOU, she captures the true essence of a woman.

The poems are poignant, real and so inspirational. My favorite poem is titled Be Strong, it lets readers know that no matter what their obstacles are, God will always be there for them. He will sustain, love and carry when necessary. I highly recommend this book to everyone because it will inspire and uplift.

I love this book!!! I got it today, and my girlfriend and I have been practically fighting over who gets to read each poem. Some of the poems were hillarious, yet others were just straight and to the point.....and I enjoyed every minute of it. I plan to buy 2 more copies for my other "single" girlfriends. It is definitely an "in your face" kind of book. This is a definite keeper.

CARRERE AND HASTINGS

Review Date: 2007-01-11
If I could award this book ten stars I would, it's that good. Acanthus Press puts out gorgeous, well researched books and this could be their best publishing to date. Carrere and Hastings excelled in the grand Beaux Art style and it is so refreshing that so much of their work has survived. This is an exhaustive, scholarly piece of art and the author, Kate Lemos should be proud of this work. I was aware of much of the architecture of this Carrere and Hastings, but was surprised at the breath of their work. The images in this book are fantastic and the text is highly informative. If you have any interest in Carrere and Hastings or Guilded Age architecture, or just frankly appreciates gorgeous books, then you will love this book. In a word, spectacular.

An intelligent, and lavish tribute to the architects

Review Date: 2007-02-26
Acanthus Press has packaged an extensive collection of archival photography with the lucid and expert essays of four appreciative observers of Beaux-Arts and Eclectic architecture to produce this monumental, two-volume tribute to John Carrere and Thomas Hastings. The architectural quality of the firm's work is reflected in the lavish production values assigned to book. This seems particularly apt since since Carrere & Hastings included among their commissions the New York Public Library. The quality of the Gilded Age firm's work was matched by the volume and range of its output: hotels, retail and office buildings, country estates, city mansions, theatres, institutional buildings, churches, monuments and exhibitions. Through these many projects, Carrere & Hastings put their stamp on the face of the nation and helped define an age. In addition to preserving the memory of many buildings that have long ago been replaced by less aesthetically pleasing structures, the text surprises with insights and vignettes on C&H, the period in which the firm operated and even public policy. Essayist Charles D. Warren's contribution on civic architecture provides an excellent introduction to the evolution of policy and practice in the awarding of architectural contracts on government buildings, beginning with the Tarnsey Act of 1893. Essayist William Morrison, who has made a specialty of the study of Broadway theater architecture, applies it here, but extends his reach to a range of other commercial buildings, with a special focus on C&H's hotels--too few of which survive. The credentials of the writers have produced text that is both authoritative and accessible. Morrison and fellow essayist Kate Lemos (who ably handles the extensive section on C&H libraries)are architectural historians, while Warren and Mark Alan Hewitt are practicing architects. Individually and collectively, they provide descriptive detail and historical context in clear, crisp prose. The set features hundreds of exquisitely reproduced photographs and the volumes are housed in a debossed box with inset plates both front and back. A worthy tribute to the architects it commemorates and to the age in which they practiced.

This is a great book that explains the basic ins and outs of chiropractic from a persponal perspecive of the author. It helps you understand that health is way more personal and is highly influenced by the individual.
The author manages to explain a very difficult and at times contraversial subject of chiropractic and health by incorporating celebrities and sportsmen and some of the philosophy and science behind it. He also manages to help the reader understand what the mind has to do with health and the stresses and strains in life too.
