This book is just amazing. I have known the author, G. Warren Sears, for close to 50 years. He has been like an adopted father to me. I can assure you that every story in this book is absolutely true. Warren has an incredible gift for witnessing for Jesus. His unwavering faith and trust in Christ have taken him on a lifetime of journeys which have changed people's lives. Surprisingly, Warren's adventures center mainly on everyday occurrences, showing us that we too can learn to recognize opportunities to witness our faith and further the Kingdom of God. Oh by the way, this book is funny. Warren's joy for serving the Lord overflows from every page. You've got to read this book.

The Truth of Life Distilled into a few lines at a Time

Professor Erskine Peters was a gentle and awesome soul!
I took a class with him at UC-Berkeley and he had the utmost patience with everyone, unlike some Professors that were annoyed with undergraduates and their arrogance.
This book releases, to the reader, the same kind of patience with our searching and seeking of wisdom from our Elders. This book is full of the wisdom of our Elders and would be great for speechmakers, teachers, copywriters, or anyone that would like a great quote to have people think about for the rest of their lives.
These snippets of Elder wisdom feel like a heart-beat.
I am thankful to Prof. Peters for his wisdom in collecting them for us to live with them, and for me, he lives through them.
May you continue your journey, Professor Peters! Ashe!!

A must read.

I had the honor to take a couple of classes with Dr. Peters (who passed away in 1998) at the University of Notre Dame and although it has been several years since I had originally read this book, it's spirit lives on in me now. For people of African descent in the United States, this book opens new doors to us that because of a history of slavery, we were ignorant of. Don't get me wrong, this is not an exclusive book, anyone, regardless of your ethnicity, race, heritage, etc., can gain something from reading it. It re-affirms our natural beliefs that we are all connected, there is meaning in everything, and we are responsible not only to ourselves, but to each other, our ancestors, our progeny, and to the cosmos as well.

It is a book, once you've finished reading, you'll be surprised at how much it lingers with you.

Winner of the 2002 Morse Poetry Prize, All The Blood Tethers is a collection of intense and powerful images crafted by the award-winning poet Catherine Sasanov illustrating and evoking the severe side of Roman Catholicism, life in the brutal city, wandering past veils of death, and so much more. "Walk into the patio. / Look up at the stars. / No one's left / to decipher God's language / held just out of reach. / The royal cosmographers / died centuries ago."

Blood Tethers deserving of more than Poetry Prize

There are few books of poetry that so directly speak to the reader as the poems in "All the Blood Tethers" do. This book is the much deserving winner of the prestigious Samuel French Morse Poetry Prize. However, this book deserves more then prizes. Ms. Sasanov has created a world so personal that it transcends many poets' attempts at communicating inner soul. This book allows the reader to feel these poems inside their own bodies. Ms. Sasanov's voice is strong and beautiful. The poems are at once real and tied to the earth as they are soaring to the heaven. This book deserves to be widely studied and discussed. It deserves to be taught and pondered. It deserves to be read.

Excellent Summary of U. S. Nightfighter Aces in Action!
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-11-14
Almost two dozen Americans became nightfighter aces in World War II. They served in various commands - Air Force, Navy, Marines, RAF - and flew a grab-bag of aircraft - P-61s, F6Fs, Beaufighters, Mossies, F4Us. Though their scores never approached those of their daytime compatriots, their kills were hard earned and vital to the final Allied victory. Osprey stalwarts Andy Thomas and Warren Thompson relate the fascinating saga of AMERICAN NIGHTFIGHTER ACES OF WORLD WAR 2 in this 2008 Osprey release.

When WWII broke out, America lagged behind other world air forces in terms of nightfighter aircraft, radar and tactics. With RAF help and work by pioneering pilots like USN CDR 'Chick' Harmer, America eventually produced a number of deadly nightfighters like the Black Widow and fielded units that took their toll on Axis aircraft plying the night skies.

Thomas and Thompson's book provide a globe-spanning tour of the development of the American nightfighter efforts and the combats various U.S. pilots and units took part in. So the reader is treated to first-hand accounts of Russ Reiserer in his F6F-3N, P-61 ace Herman Ernst, Mossie ace Archie Harrington and others stalking and downing Bettys, Ju 88s, FW 190s, Zeroes and even V-1s.

The book is illustrated with over 80 black & white photos and 12(!) color pix. The center section of color aircraft profiles by Chris Davey is especially noteworthy. What a smorgasbord of aircraft: Mossies, Black Widows, Hellcats, Havocs, Venturas, Beaufighters, Corsairs and Lightnings!

Given its widespread coverage and pleasing illustrations, AMERICAN NIGHTFIGHTER ACES OF WORLD WAR 2 is a marvelous introduction to some talented pilots that, by war's end, had denied the night skies to Axis aircraft. Recommended.

Good read, gave me an insight into the operations of the fighter aircraft used in the night fighter role. Main reason for buying this book was to obtain more information on the role of the "P61 Black Widow", because I am building a model of this aircraft.

I love the short and inspirational verses in this book. I met a friend of the author who shared it with me and am glad to see that I can buy a copy of my own. It is one of my favorite books to read and uplift my spirit. It is a wonderful book to buy as a gift or to keep somewhere for everyone to read.

These are some of the wisest verses I have ever read anywhere. They really make you think about life and look at yourself and relationships in a more postive and loving way. She put into words feelings and ideas I have wondered about over the years and helped me see them more clearly.

I just hope she writes MORE! I also love the calligraphy.

A book definitely touched by angels!!!

After reading Appalachian Values, I actually have a better understanding of myself and the culture that influenced my life. I was always wondering why I have such different values from people that I work with in other areas. Loyal Jones not only explains our time honored values but instills a sense of pride about a culture that is generally misunderstood due to media portrayal. I have a true sense of pride and understaning of the ways of our culture after reading this book. Beautifully written and photographed.

This examination considers both sides of the health food industry's rise

APPETITE FOR CHANGE: HOW THE COUNTERCULTURE TOOK ON THE FOOD INDUSTRY appears in its second updated edition to appeal to college-level students of American culture, particular that of the 1960s - as well as students of culinary history. Food and eating habits changed as a result of the social revolution of the 1960s: this examination considers both sides of the health food industry's rise, charts the rise of ethnic cuisine, and establishes strong connections between social movements and eating habits. APPETITE FOR CHANGE originally appeared in 1989 and is updated here to reflect new alternative diets and organic food's rise.

We are what we eat!

Review Date: 1999-08-23
I read this several years ago in an anthropology course and it was truly enlightening. It describes how elements of the counterculture in the 60's came to view the mass production of food as the fundamental basis of industrial economy. They sought to decentralize, communalize and humanize this massive "combine." Unfortunately, they were co-opted, by the giant corporations that today continue to shovel their bitter porridge into our gaping pie holes. This book is more than about food production, but how corporate capitalism manufactures values, and disires and marginalizes those who threaten to provide viable alternatives. An excellent book.

A 'must' for any college-level architectural studies collection
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2006-06-23
Warren & Wetmore was one of the most successful, busy architectural practices in the U.S. for the first thirty years of the 20th century, producing over three hundred public projects from the Grand Central Terminal to the Hotel Vanderbilt. The firm's blend of classical and French styles into American practices comes alive in THE ARCHITECTURE OF WARREN & WETMORE, the first study to examine the firm's creations as a whole. New color photos blend with historic black and white shots, drawings, and plans and are enhanced by a foreword by Robert A.M. Stern. Commentary tells us the best designs produced by the firm were private commissions, and chapters reveal these highlights. A 'must' for any college-level architectural studies collection.

WARREN AND WETMORE

Review Date: 2006-03-16
Wow, what a great book, the images are vivid and well done and the text is very scholarly, which is not surprising considering that Stern is the dean of the Yale School of Architecture. It is obvious that Stern has a great deal of respect for Warren and Wetmore. This book focuses on many of their great works, but the masterpiece is of course the singular Grand Central Station, this building is colossel and spectacular, just as the late, great Penn Station was Mckim, Mead, and Whites masterpeice so it is with Warren and Wetmore. I highly recommend this book to anyone with an appreciation for beautiful things.
